I know optimus G has QSlide feature but how can I use it? I checked out youtube videos about QSlide but I cannot find the qslide button at the top right corner at all. Do I need to enable that feature? How?

I installed an alternative that works with youtube videos, streaming videos, as well as local videos, but the [email protected]#$ing app chooser is GONE from this phone. On every other tablet/phone that i've ever used that runs android, it allows me to pick which app i'd like to open up the video/file in. The defaults are cleared, there are no options, etc.
Whats going on?!?!!?!?!?

Super Floating Video.
It works on every device i have except my Optimus...so either LG did some funky butt stuff with the app chooser--forcing youtube videos to be viewed in the youtube app....and the like: or their build isnt recignizing that there's an alternative player for it. Android itself wont present options if theres only one app available...but the issue isnt just with videos. Its with web page links as well....which is why i know that LG has done something stupid.
If it happened with videos alone, id blame it on the app.
But because it happens with links as well (we at least have the stock browser in addition to chrome), i know its LG's doing...its either baked into the ROM, a glitch, or im missing a setting somewhere. The latter 2 are highly likely. Extremely highly likely.
Popup Browser is the browser id like to use, however, ive installed firefox as well...and it doesnt even present me with that option.
IMO the browser needs some HW acceleration work, but aside from panning, moving and resizing is smooth and buttery as hell. Its especially nice for clicking on links in the G+, Facebook, or Twitter apps....you can view the page, read, navigate, or visit a site, and then close out of it without leaving the app. Its also nice for keeping a dictionary open, or other reference material while reading the news, an ebook, or other material. For added functionality, add a quicklaunch dock/bar to your notification tray....so you can always launch the app, even if youre not doing so by clicking a link.....for instance, if youre watching/streaming live TV or a movie, and you want to look of a movie or actress.
The video app is great.
The app can play video streams, and in addition to youtube, it can manage embedded software and hardware decodable files, as well as all streams playable via mobile video (H.264 and the like.).
Install either and let me know if you have the same issues.

Yeah, i'm not saying it was the app's fault, i was just curious as to what app you used. I'm pretty sure LG isn't doing it on purpose to lock anything down either, since I get the prompt for everything I should and I haven't seen this anywhere else. Sounds like you just have a really weird bug. Anyway, thanks for the app.

No problem. As far as adding functionality goes...id be hard pressed to find anything a manufacturer has ever really done for android in the past year (before that, too?) that wasn't a gimmick, and actually improved the device. Samsung did, however. Their implementation handles window management better, but LG's implementation would have been superior, in this man's humble opinion, because the transparency settings are key. Historically, LG has been week in the software section, and this just makes the opinion people have of them as a company even more vindicated. But the popup Video player is definitely a case where invention is the mother of necessity. I don't think I could ever go back and live without a popup browser and video player. It was kinda a goof; the fact that were forced to use third party tools because of laziness...in a era where almost all of our video watching on portable devices is done via streaming, playing YouTube videos is a must. I'd much rather streaming be built in.
And this isn't a unique situation...it is kinda unfortunate...their software isn't just weak...it's horrid. Exponentially more so than even companies like Archos. But they only fail in this aspect for a lack of trying. They're focused on the Korean experience, where they do well. Apparently North America is just the icing on the cake.
But these dynamics put in place some awesome potential. I also think that because of this, we could see one of the best Nexus devices ever made. LG is equally As impressive in comparison to Samsung in hardware, and both companies own their own display business, and advanced manufacturing nodes, allowing them to innovate on aspects where the devices of the future will be made. Their weakness in software makes them the PERFECT company for the nexus line of products. They get to focus on what they do best--hardware, and leave the software to the guys who do it best--google. Because of this, they benefit from a nexus lineup more than any other company could. I expect to see a Nexus tablet in the next year or so from LG.
Just as well, the Nexus name will land them something they'd never otherwise get in the U.S....market penetration, and mind share. They were unable to offer anything compelling in the functionality department before, but the partnership, with a promise to give them the latest and greatest set up possible, with an up-to-date pure android experience is compelling as hell. Hopefully this is the start of a pure android brand.
Its a case of perfect harmony....a company that cares about hardware, and produces some unique and groundbreaking technologies, that doesn't care much for/about software, teamed up with a company that knows how to provide the best software experience for any mobile device.
I know this is more than you bargained for, but I thought this discussion segued extremely well into what we can, and should expect from the future of our devices.
A pure android experience is probably minutes away for the Optimus G, once we get our hands on the code we need. Then, we'll have a superior device. And it'll work the way it should.
Anyways, like I said....there must be a setting I'm missing somewhere or something, I have the same exact configuration on all of my devices....so either its a weird, weird bug pertaining to a really specific use case, or a setting I'm missing-about after I had the issue, I literally put the phone down, and won't touch it again until I figure this out.

The app chooser dissapears after you set a default app. You can go into the task manager under the default tab and remove the default player. Should ask again.
Im using optimus l9 (which is similar to G) and qslide has been added with jb. It's available through notifications or via native app like 'videos'. It looks like this:

after clicking 'videos' or selected video in gallery, there is simple 'inverted full-screen icon'.
I want to know how the new qslide works

Hi All,
It's all great to hear Microsoft officially announces the "Windows Phone 7 Series". Another Mobile OS, put there to compete with other OS's.
But I want to know one thing =>
Am I the only one that find the general UI of "Windows Phone 7" unattractive, "nothing special" and bore-some?
The moment I saw the "Start screen", I said to myself: "Damn, is this the UI Microsoft wanna use to show its competitiveness to other OS's??? ". From my point of view, the look of winmo 6.5.3 on the freshly announced HTC HD mini is WAY BETTER than that of Windows Phone 7.
This is just my opinion, now, what's your opinion about the UI?

I would disagree. I like the visuals. On the contrary, the look is NEW and NOT FAST!!
Everyone has there opinions and taste. I honestly love what MS has done with the revisions. I think visuals are truly innovative and elegant. The animations are uncanny. I do agree the home screen is dull and boring, but the rest of the OS is vibrant. Here's some screen shots from my post. Head over to my post to see the rest, there's like 20 more photos...: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634429

I do like it as well...looks fresh but whether it is good to use on a daily basis remains to be prooven!
And BTW: the look of the new SenseUI Builds really annoys me! til Version 2.1 everything was fine...but the new ones??? No way.
I won't talk about looks here, because that's personal taste.
Moreover, what counts is functionality - how easy and fast it gets the job done.
This is easily and by far the best and most well thought through UI I've ever seen.
I particularly like
- the ability to pin pretty much everything to the first page (but unlike Sense, as many things as you want), whether it's contacts, programs or whatever
- the things you pin to the first page not being static, but also showing information - a very clever way to bring together the iPhone's icon-based home screen with Windows Mobile's information based home screen.
- the navigation through the pages, with the text on top going out of the screen to show you that there's more you can discover by swiping left/right
- the panorama backgrounds on all the screens (cover arts in music, a random picture in photos etc.)
- the ability for third party developers to integrate their stuff (like additional social networks or streaming services) into the hubs (I hope there will be a lot of freedom for third parties to do so!).
- the seamless integration of all kinds of services in general, whether it's Exchange, Windows Live (finally!!), Facebook...
I also particularly like that some good concepts from previous Windows Mobile versions have been preserved:
- long press menus
- softkeys
- quick search through any list (in WM6.5, it was the keyboard icon, now it's the required search button)
Those enable a consistent UI throughout all applications, contrary to the mess you find on the iPhone, where important buttons like "back" are in different places depending on the application you're in.
What I do NOT like:
- The all applications list: That should be a grid, cause there's lots of wasted space there.
- There seems to be no easy way to get to the music controls while music is playing in the background.
- Apparently there is no easy way to switch between running applications, this seems to work much like WM6.5, with the back button taking you to the application you used before. This is a mess, the back button should open some kind of task switcher instead.
I love the new start menu in Windows Phone 7. Titanium didn't display enough information on the home page, requiring you to hover over items to see information. Windows Mobile 6.1 today screens were too small to tap. Sense is either functional (icons for quick launching) or informational (clock), but never both at the same time. Why doesn't the launch icon for Messenger show me the latest messages I have? Why don't my contacts' icons show me the latest interaction I had with them?
Windows Phone 7 adds all of those in a simple, attractive UI. You can give a Windows Phone 7 to any person and they'd probably be able to use it, but give Sense to a person and they might not. (you might think the contrary... I thought Sense was easy to use, until I saw my peers struggle with it and typing on the keyboard... on a HD2...)
Agree with you all!
Yes, you guys are right! Looks are personal taste!
But right now, which OS would you choose, out of the following: Windows Phone 7, WebOS or Android?? My choice goes to Android!

I'm not sure how important the applications list is going to be going forward. With the way apps can integrate into the "hubs" I think you will not be using this list very often.
I'm hoping the music controls function like the ZuneHD. The ZuneHD has a dedicated media control button that brings up a screen overlay when pressed. This overlay allows you to pause/play, skip/fast forward/rewind and increase/decrease volume. Also, on the ZuneHD, you can pause and play a song by tapping the album art.
I am very eager to see how the multitasking works/doesn't work when they show the SDK at MIX next month.
Overall, I love the UI. It seems like an evolution of the ZuneHD to me.

Android
I actually have three upgrade eligibilities this year. If the rumor about the SE X10 coming to ATT is true, that will be one of them. I will also wait and see what Android phones HTC sends to ATT.
I will also, without any doubt, reserve one of the upgrades for WMP7. I had very low expectations for MS and WMP7 but I was very impressed with what they showed on Monday. I can't wait for MIX to see the rest.
Of course, I'm a phone whore so I am never completely satisfied anyway!
In my opinion I think the UI looks awesome. It's unique, fresh, new, & looks like nothing else (excluding the Zune HD). the start menu & the App list look a little bit dull but the whole Hubs system just looks wonderful. I like the new idea of the context menus. WinPho 7 is not evolution from the previous WM, it is Revolution.
From a UI perspective I really like the thought behind it. It's pretty much a directory structure that's self organizing with a 'splash' screen for each directory. I have alot of applications stored on my wm device that I store over various folders. Directories are a good way of organizing sizable amounts of information. This UI is basically an improvement to that age old structure, putting some transparency on this structured yet intuitive setup.
It's visually impressive, yet does not have that bells and whistle feel that can get stale.
But I take objection to their comments that a phone is not a PC. That's the wrong message to send. A PC just stands for personal computer...you can't get more PC than a handheld device. It's clearly a PC, the message they should send is that it's not a desktop, it's not a laptop, it's a handheld device. While still a PC you expect a suitable UI to pair with each version of a PC you interact with.
From a marketing perspective, I think the windows phone 7 would mesh well with their 'I'm a PC' marketing campaign. A commercial seeing someone working on a desktop/laptop and then using mobile office, and exchange to take that to your phone would be a great commercial to make.
Microsoft is missing the picture with that overly simplistic comment.
If I could carry the power of my desktop with me, I would just need different display devices with the appropriate UI to interact with my PC. That's really the destiny of computers...well not even to carry the hardware, but to just have different methods of display and interaction with a single device. So you can sit down at a kb and mouse, or pick a up a multitouch display, or take a handheld on a train with you but still have common storage, and processing.
Great UI.
But I am not happy that it requires a minimum of 1GHz processor. Even then the graphics rendering especially the Album scrolling is not very fluid. That was very cleary observed in Joe's Demo considering that he hand only a handhul of pictures. My iphone has @3500 pictures and I can scroll through it like water flowing across the screen.
This version of WP7 is not my favorite. I like the other betas.

And this was a demo of pre-release software. I wouldn't put any weight behind the peformance that was shown in the demo. It will almost certainly be much improved before the RTM.

It won't work it needs 2GHz processor. You will have to overclock, haha just kidding.
My biggest concern with this new OS is the "need" to integrate with social networks. I'm by no means interested to see the status messages my friends/collegues post on facebook, twitter, linkedin, myspace etc. Also, WM7 is pointing towarsds xbox live integration, which will -as I understood- in basics also be used as a new "Microsoft hardware only" social network.
Another thing that bothers me about the new UI is that it looks slowish, even in a demo.. Doesn't look too appealing yet so far!
*NEWS* Version 1.12 is up on Marketplace! Version 1.13 with social goodies is coming real soon!

Howdy! I need some feedbacks from you guys
At the time I was coding this app, there wasn't any decent shows tracking app out there, so I decided to give back the WP community a little, hence the born of Prime TV.
[Functionalities wise...]
What's new (in version 1.12)?
65% faster load and resume time
Shake to change tile image (paid users only)
Image gallery for shows
More screen captures/images for episodes
Change default genre for shows grouping
Much more stable saving and loading mechanism
Fail safe mechanism to detect missing shows and automatically re-add them
Grouping options and alphabetical sorting option for tv shows
Live tile notification (paid users only, for now)
News feeds integration (general news on main page, show specific news on show page)
Auto mobilized browser for reading news (faster load time and to conserve bandwidth)
Search for missing high quality background on show page (see video)
The core is pretty similar to other apps.
You can follow shows (US, UK, Anime etc) as long as it's in thetvdb.com database.
My efforts in this app are to make it lighting fast and smooth transitions between pages.
It also supports auto timezone correction, so if you're in Australia but following US series, you'll know when it will air on local time.
In the future releases, I've planned to include
Notification system (Graduated)
Mark as watched (Graduated)
Preview trailer (In current version - beta)
JumpList to group episodes by Season number and/or air date (Graduated)
Support more languages (I only know 5 so I might need help from you guys
Social integration (twitter/facebook)
News integration from tv.com etc. (Graduated)
[So the questions are...]
I'd like to hear some feedback from you guys
What do you think about this app?
As a developer or user, what do you like to see in this app?
Don't be shy, request any features you like! I listen to everyone that has something to say!
You can find version 1.10 on Marketplace, and version 1.11 has been submitted for certification just a moment ago (26 April).
App is fast and the layout is pretty sharp, so points for that.
Some negatives: you need "feedback" to let you know you've added a show after you searched it. Right now you tap it and it adds, but you don't know that till you backed out of the search.
The app crashes in trial on a second launch, erasing my 2 saved shows--not sure if that's a limitation or not.
At $0.99, it's not yet there. You might be better offering a "lite" free version with basics (what you have now) and then a paid $0.99 with notifications, etc. Right now though, TVShow Lite is more stable, useful and free even if yours seems a tad faster and nicer (background image).
Hey malatesta, thanks for the feedback.
Sorry about the crash, I investigated into that and it's a bug.
Version 1.2.1 has been submitted with tons of bug fixes, even faster (framerate from 45 to 58) and better transitions.
I'm thinking of making an ad-supported free version with all current functionalities. And ad-free version with notification, mark as watched etc this week. I'm revamping the search page, adding something like "top shows", and of course the "feedback" you mentioned, thanks!
Also I'm thinking of removing the "aired" section, what do you think?
I played with the trial as well
The overall design is nice and pleasing and i like the backgrounds. I cannot comment on the loading since I could only load 2 shows and that's certainly not enough to say anything about loading time/transitions.
I agree with malatesta, when adding from search, you need some sort of way to let me know I have added it - also I would do away with the tap-add, just have a button that specifically adds, because you can imagine the accidental tapping would add a show and that would be annoying.
Panorama view is fine so far. I would personally expect to have only the most important things in pan view: my tv shows - upcoming - missed/aired (although only useful if i can track/check off episodes) - and maybe new/upcoming tv shows
I would also leave adding and news to the bottom as visible buttons and every other function should be hidden in the ... slideout menu
i like clean panoramas that contain only whats really and immediately useful, so that ^ is why i would not prefer to have a panorama page for every function
also the calendar-type view of the date is fine and i would say 24hr format is better, and it would get rid of the am-pm that sits off to the right
and last, i'm personally against ads i avoid apps with ads (except perhaps only to test and then buy or not), they destroy the whole design of the app, so if you want you can make a trial app with very basic functionality (have a look at other apps to see what is considered basic)
this is especially true since your layout is great and pleasing, any ads would make it look horrible
cheers
@nick109, hey thanks a lot for the comment! I'd like to invite you to be official tester of upcoming releases, what do you think? I develop this everyday it's just the annoying certification process that's slowing it down. But having said that you'd have to have a developer account or jailbroken phone to sideload the app though.
I too avoid apps with ads, I don't think putting ads is the way to go. So I'll consider putting ads seriously, at most it'll only appear in trial mode, definitely no way in paid mode.
Currently I'm implementing "mark as watched" feature, so that aired section could be useful. And also JumpList (like in People app you can select the alphabet and quickly jumping to a group) to group episodes by season number and by air date.
Time formatting is really troublesome here, I'm also changing the format according to user preference, e.g. what you set on your phone (region and languages), so this app will have a consistent look and feel.
Lastly, these days seems like social integration is the only way to make app popular, sadly But I'll make the app more solid before adding news/twitter etc.
Again thanks for your reply.
sure i'll gladly test it as best i can and inform you of any bugs i come across
and yes i will have to sideload it
and speaking of ads, i noticed google has released their sdk for wp7, and their design is actually quite great and fits well with the metro ui
news here
I bought the app (1.0) but it's still telling me i am using the trial version and i am unable to add multiple shows... already tried reinstalling/re-buying, no luck. any suggestions?
General suggestions:
- live-tile support as the "all-white" tile does not look so great (would have payed even more for the app with live-tile)
- fix for the "trial mode not being removable"
- maybe a link to "buy app" from within the app to fix the issue?
- as I have a LOT of shows i follow, maybe some way to rate shows or prioritize these
- confirmation once a show was successfully added
really looking forward to some updates and hopefully a fix to my issue!
cheers!
@nick109, thanks! I saw that as well, will definitely experiment it when critical features have been implemented/improved.
@pencilcase, I'm so sorry! I just investigated into that issue and it was totally my fault, an update (1.2.1) is on the way, i think it'll be approved tomorrow. Fortunately I revamped the trial system, it's still only 2 shows allowed on trial, but it won't have that nasty paid version issue. Again I'm sorry.
Good suggestions @pencilcase, I was thinking of using the settings page to allow collection sorting, like according to added time or rating. I have tested adding 20 shows, including America's Next Top Model which has 15 seasons, and it doesn't slow down version 1.2.1 at all.
I'm working on version 1.3.0, which has "Mark as Watched" and grouping system. Today I even bought a $149 developer library (from telerik) just to improve this app! Hopefully you guys will like it!
i gave the 1.2 version another go, i added simpsons which has a lot of seasons and episodes, and it did not lag, so very good on that
i also added Terra Nova, or tried to, but the app didn't respond by adding it, give it a try and see if it happens to you as well
yes, focus on the critical stuff for now, and in the future if you could keep in mind to have a setting to refresh background on each launch, that would be a nice eye candy
@nick109, currently my implementation is to cross reference thetvdb.com and tvrage.com database to find matching series. So that I could pull information from both databases and integrate them together.
That's actually why some series appearing on the selection couldn't actually be added, e.g. if information couldn't be matched.
I'm thinking to go with tvrage.com, they have more solid database, almost 99.99% uptime. And updating mechanism is simpler, plus I could actually implement video trailer for each episode with that database.
I'm implementing this on version 1.3, and a major UI overhaul is coming!
By the way, what do you mean that refreshing background on each launch? Currently it's getting the background of latest upcoming episode. E.g. if The Vampire Diaries has the latest upcoming episode it'll be the background of that, so at first glance you'll instantly know the latest upcoming episode. And if you delete that show (by tap and holding on "collection"), the background will be refreshed to the next upcoming episode.
ah i see now : )
and yes if from tvrage you could implement trailers that would be really nice!
looking forward to it
hey nick109, check out the preview video below, what do you think?
aha now you've done it! good work. have you sent this for approval yet?
thanks! no i haven't. there's still a couple of things i need to do, like manual timezone adjustment, because i don't live in a country with daylight saving, so i don't understand time property as well as others.
as a user, it'll be very frustrating that a tv show tracking app shows all kind of incorrect time, so i'm working on a page for "settings" to manually adjust each tv show.
at the same time i'm also working on live tile notification what do you think of the mockup live tile image below?
good idea for the time part, should help with non local TV series
The live tile looks great - I suppose it will update the picture too? Else I think the today part is unnecessary since it's understood
The new interface looks quite a lot to TVShow !
I bought 'Prime TV'and 'TVShow' and I prefer TVShow largely because he has already 'live tile' (which are updated every night without restarting the application) and converting local times for foreign TV shows. And it has more feature like : subtitles, translation, recaps, pictures

Howdy! I need some feedbacks from you guys
At the time I was coding this app, there wasn't any decent shows tracking app out there, so I decided to give back the WP community a little, hence the born of Prime TV.
[Functionalities wise...]
Notification system
Mark as watched
Preview trailer
JumpList to group episodes by Season number and/or air date
Support more languages (I only know 5 so I might need help from you guys
Social integration (twitter/facebook)
News integration from tv.com etc.
[So the questions are...]
I'd like to hear some feedback from you guys
What do you think about this app?
As a developer or user, what do you like to see in this app?
Also do you like thetvdb.com database better or tvrage.com?
[Special treatments for XDA...]
If you guys like, I can probably release beta versions to some testers before it hits Marketplace, working on this alone I just can't seem to catch every bug
Don't be shy, request any features you like! I listen to everyone that has something to say!
You can find version 1.0 on Marketplace, and version 1.2.1 has been submitted for certification yesterday (even faster and more reliable).
I've set up a static website just for viewing pleasure, check it out at http://nineverse.com/.

Thanks guys to steal the design of TVShow...
I'm a WP7 user, who also owns an iPod touch. Overall I like the WP7 experience, except for the app list - in my opinion it's killing the system.
On my Ipod I have probably around 200 apps. They are organised by page - so I have a page for games, a page for music apps, a page for productivity apps etc. With the newer version of iOS I've also made sub-folders on each page, but the point is; when I need X app I just swipe to the relevant page, then look for its icon.
This also has a nice side effect; when i'm bored, it's easy just to flick through the screens and find an app I want to play with.
On WP7 there is no quick way to find an app without knowing its name. For example, I installed a currency converter but to run I have to browse through a list of around 40 apps, looking for it. I don't remember what its icon looks like or its name as I use it infrequently - this process takes ages, and defies the point of having a smart phone, which you can quickly take out your pocket and look up something.
There is no real way you can memorise the names of 100+ apps, so the only choice is scrolling. However, having one long list is broken from a usability point of view, as every time you install a new app everything below in the list it gets pushed down a little bit. Therefore if you do learn how far down to scroll to find a specific app, it will eventually move and you won't find it again.
Finally, already there are tons of apps on my phone that I have forgotten I have installed. The list is not easy to flick through when bored, so infrequently used apps get neglected. Bare in mind I only have around 30 apps installed, and already I'm confused / lost..
All this could be solved so easily by adding groups, like the people hub has in Mango. Imagine being able to add groups at the top of the list like "Games", "Productivity", "Sound" etc, and a killer feature would be that you can add each app to multiple groups. Newly installed apps could even go in a default group called "Programs", bit like Windows.
This simple change would make the phone about 1000x more productive than now - thoughts?
Whatever do you need two hundred applications for???
I have around 50 apps installed on my WP7, and everything I need it for is covered. It is significantly easier to remember the names of 50 apps than 200, especially considering most apps on WP7 have reasonable names "London Travel", "Groceries", etc...
With the jump list feature in mango, it will become easier to page through a long list of apps as the app list will replicate the naviation of the people list, where you can click on any letter, then the letter you want, and jump straight to where you need to be.
I personally like the simplicity of the tiles and apps. I agree that another page on the left, where you could select a bunch of "frequently used, but not so frequently that I want them as live tiles" apps, would be a definite improvement though.

you can artificially group them on your start screen by doing something like this:
http://www.wpcentral.com/organise-your-start-screen-live-tiles
personally, the ability to add something to a hub, or to just have the option for folders would be helpful for people who want more control over the organization of apps, but i have maybe 50 apps installed and rarely do i find i'm missing an app for something.

So now we are being judged for having too many apps? What business is it of yours (or anyone's) how many apps someone else has on their phone?
For people who have more use for their phone than 50 apps can satisfy, the current system, even with the jump list, is woefully inadequate. Too many app developers think they can be "clever" by giving their app a name that really has little bearing on its use. When you get too many of these on your phone, it becomes annoyingly difficult to remember the obscure names of all of these apps, so even the jump list and search features don't really help much.
Adding the option to pin apps to the top of the list (and then be able to drag them into a preferred order, similar to the way live tiles can be dragged around) would be a huge benefit to many of us. Even a "most recently used" list or the ability to group by marketplace category would help.

Nah man, it's just because you're so used to working with the 4x4 grid. Your brain is gonna pick up working with WP7 and you'll start remembering the names of apps, at least ones that you use frequently.
Worst case my friend, use the voice option to open the name of the app
OR
Hit the Magnifying glass and do a search of the functionality that you're looking for. Mango has it where it'll suggest apps for the tasks that you want to do.
As a tangent, I can't even imagine drilling down through so many levels of folders to find what I'm looking for, at least on a phone, that just sounds nuts to me.

i didn't know mango had that as a feature, neat!
tired of these threads with these lousy childish complaints. use the jumplist, search feature or pin your most used apps to the start screen!!!! and be done with it, that's what it's there for!
Ok, so everyone always says "use the jump list" or "use the search function...
There is no jumplist. I have 86 apps in my applist and there's no jumplist.
There is no search. When I press the search button, I get the bing search. If I enter the name of any of my apps, all it gives me is bing search results. "Web" and "News". There's no option to search/find apps.
So please either stop telling use to use these non-existing features or tell us how to enable them. Until then: I want groups as well!
Not to pile on, but if you can't find a currency converter app on your phone that you installed in a list of 40 apps, maybe the phone isn't the problem. Additionally, if you believe finding an app within multiple pages with multiple sub genres is less confusing, I just don't know what to say.

It's not too bad of a suggestiong, not sure why some are taking it so personally. Right now it's not a big deal but later on when you have a lot of apps, then it may be nice to have grouping. It will also probably look better visually, then just a plain list.
On the other hand, as others have already mentioned there are ways to get around it now, use the voice command.. it's works great. Or use the search grid. Or pin if you have too.

I'm assuming you don't have Mango. In Mango, you have the following
1. Jump list is activated when you have greater than 4X (I forget the exact number) apps
2. I just did a search for "restaurant reviews" and the first result is the Yelp icon with the ability to launch the app. It is under the web tab. In addition, there is a search button in the app list (under the arrow)

You are piling on, and you know it .
But let's take your specific example. I have the XE currency converter app on my phone. The problem is, in an effort to be clever, they put the "XE" in the icon, and called the app "Currency". So, looking at it in the list you still see "XE Currency".
If I used it every day, I'd get used to that. But I don't use it every day (and therefore DON'T, I repeat DON'T want to pin it to the start screen). And, the few times I have used it, my mind has focused on the fact that it is XE (since that has always been its name on the web site I've used for the past ten years, i.e. xe.com). Unfortunately, you won't find it under X in the list, but under C. And in a list of 150+ apps, it tends to get lost fairly quickly.
Seriously people, stop bashing others for not wanting to just settle for something less or not be like everyone else. Having groups/folders/etc. is a good suggestion. Also, a lot of your suggestions are for Mango, which many of us don't want to run yet as you loose a lot of homebrew on it nevermind it's Beta. So, in the end, stop crying because someone has a complaint or is giving constructive criticism. While you may like it exactly as is, not everyone does & having choices is better.

And you really don't see how monumentally inefficient it is to have to open bing and type in "restaurant reviews" and wait for the search results, just to launch an app that is already installed? I think that new feature of bing is more intended to help people recognize that an app they already have offers a feature they didn't know about or to allow them to install the app if they don't already have it, not to provide an efficient means to launch an app that you are already familiar with.

8 background tasks memory in use. (seems no more than 256mb?)
8773 vs 8107 boot(no task) memory in use.(seems less than mango 8107)
and some changes (messaging/maps setting)
In Tango Unlocked Emulator preview that location Icon seems not yet.

How about languages?
As all are aware, tango build will support 120 languages.
Does any one have the list of languages supported by tango?
I am just curious about Indian languages.. (which or any will be supported)
Aslo not sure how they will be supported?
- Will it include UI in those languages
- Or only tango will be able to render apps and websites developed in those languages
Fantastic...
How is IE9? Is the promised "Find on Page" feature back? Also did they add a tabs button? Or do we really have to wait a full year for this?
Anyway the other changes in Tango are minor bt very welcomed, certainly the rotation of the maps and the 8 multitask cards.
Are there any changes in the setting... specifically ability to setup mms with unlocked devices? Also curious if there is the ability to leave wifi on during "sleep" mode (screen off).
My phone has had those maps settings for a long time now... unless you are talking about the fact that yours is missing the 'tap to read directions' setting.
Is there a heading pointer in the maps app in Tango, like on every other phone. I can't use WP7 as a GPS device because I make wrong turns due to not knowing which way I'm facing on the map in unfamiliar places.
Still need to tap while navigating? Playing with your phone while driving is now illegal here and they can pull you over for it even if you've done nothing else wrong...
Can you send video off the device in eMail or MMS yet?
Is there a URL auto-shortening for SkyDrive links sent yet?

There are 3rd party GPS apps that do that. Same as all other OS's.
See above...
MMS yes, don't know about Email.
::Shrugs:: & don't care. It'll be hard integrated into the OS. Why would you need the URL's?

of course but I mean a button not a menu item, like in pre mango. Since there were a lot of complaints about the lack of a tabs button and missing "find on page". I would like to know if users will have to wait for a year for a feature to come back if MS decides to take it out against the will of the public.
About the maps, does it utilize the compass and does rotation now works while walking? Or does it still only works when navigating? This should not require a third party app imo.

i'm really not looking forward to tombstoning being back. I wonder if they'll just make it so it's done on devices w/ <=256mb RAM? that'd be fine w/ me... Fast app switching is so freaking handy when doing serious multitasking, i do not want to see it go!

Tombstoning will only happen on devices with 256MB Ram. Other devices will be able to continue to use the regular method of multitasking.

it never left, mango just made it less noticeable.
Apps will tombstone when they are far enough back in the back stack and the phone runs low on memory. So if you have an App consuming the maximum 90 MB allowed on 256 MB devices and it gets pushed back it tombstones immediately when a new App starts.
But if the first App useses only 8 MB and all the others as well you get to start ~ 10 Apps before the first gets thrown out of memory and therefore has to be tombstoned.
On regular devices it is the same but they have more time before they run out of memory (unless there's lots of background tasks consuming memory as well but they are rather limited in that regard (aside from the resource intensive task which only runs while on charging power).

Yes I know, I thought for a second they implemented rotation by the compass in the maps app, without the need to actually navigate, like iOS has. That when you open the app it will rotate in the direction you are pointing it to. Currently the maps app is just static if you dont navigate.
No IE changes?
Multitasking
Does it still have multiple instances of the same app while multitasking? For instance, do the settings still take up multiple windows? It would be great to know that an app I was previously running won't be knocked off the list because the messaging app is open in like 4 different windows.

This is so annoying. It also happens with browser tabs. Open a couple of tabs while browsing and an app gets knocked off the list.
So far the land of JB offers lots of goodies. I'm thinking of staying here but there is one big challenge for me - the new way "Complete action using" behaves. I need to select the app then I need to do an "extra click" to pick "Always" vs "Just once". That's the reverse behaviour from anything below 4.1 that I've seen in may years of flashing. Any chance to set this to reduce that extra click, ie toggle for making an app the default one for the action?
IE. I get a link, I click on it, it prompts me which browser I want to use and if I select Firefox from the list, I'd like the page to open in FF, no extra selection. I go back, out of FF, select the same link, the same list pops up and I select Chrome, again without having to do the extra click "Just once"?

No, it's not. I agree with the OP. It is a very annoying and backwards feature. In ICS and below, the menu that popped up, you could click your suitable app and it would know it was "just once" but now we have to click the suitable app and click also just once. I use stuff where I don't want it to always remember, I always want the choice, whether to use Root Explorer or Gallery, whether to use stock browser, or Chrome, and whether to use Google Music, Youtube, or Poweramp (etc. you get my point). And yes, when you're using that many "hotlinks" often enough, it can get very tedious and annoying. Sorry for my mini-rant, it's just stupid. But OP, I think there might be an apk you can flash that will revert it to ICS... or flash an ICS apk over. I will look for it.
This sounds really annoying. I have many apps that I don't set a default, like browser for example I use different browsers all the time so I don't set a default. Its currently just one click. If JB adds a second confirmation pop up then that is really dumb.

Thank you anton2009 for not only reading my question but understanding it! With 99% of the "smart" users in forums never bothering to read the question I had given up on posting. But I almost always found the answers to my questions before even needing to post one. In this case, I was puzzled no one talked about JB doubling the number of clicks vs ICS and below when one simply wants to run different apps in different situations from the same link. Like you, I test links with different browsers when I develop mobile sites/apps and listen to music with different apps, some times I use youtube to play on my devices, some times I use youtuberemote to beam it to my TV. This "just once" kills me and I'm almost ready to go back to AOKP or give CM9 (now with JB kernel) another run.
If anyone finds an apk, or prop or anything that reverts the Complete action using behaviour, please please pleeeease let me know
Happy Canada Day for those up here and those who celebrate or care.

I think I'm getting close:
public static final String ACTION_CHOOSER
Since: API Level 1
Activity Action: Display an activity chooser, allowing the user to pick what they want to before proceeding. This can be used as an alternative to the standard activity picker that is displayed by the system when you try to start an activity with multiple possible matches, with these differences in behavior:
You can specify the title that will appear in the activity chooser.
The user does not have the option to make one of the matching activities a preferred activity, and all possible activities will always be shown even if one of them is currently marked as the preferred activity.
This action should be used when the user will naturally expect to select an activity in order to proceed. An example if when not to use it is when the user clicks on a "mailto:" link. They would naturally expect to go directly to their mail app, so startActivity() should be called directly: it will either launch the current preferred app, or put up a dialog allowing the user to pick an app to use and optionally marking that as preferred.
In contrast, if the user is selecting a menu item to send a picture they are viewing to someone else, there are many different things they may want to do at this point: send it through e-mail, upload it to a web service, etc. In this case the CHOOSER action should be used, to always present to the user a list of the things they can do, with a nice title given by the caller such as "Send this photo with:".
If you need to grant URI permissions through a chooser, you must specify the permissions to be granted on the ACTION_CHOOSER Intent in addition to the EXTRA_INTENT inside. This means using setClipData(ClipData) to specify the URIs to be granted as well as FLAG_GRANT_READ_URI_PERMISSION and/or FLAG_GRANT_WRITE_URI_PERMISSION as appropriate.
As a convenience, an Intent of this form can be created with the createChooser(Intent, CharSequence) function.
Input: No data should be specified. get*Extra must have a EXTRA_INTENT field containing the Intent being executed, and can optionally have a EXTRA_TITLE field containing the title text to display in the chooser.
Output: Depends on the protocol of EXTRA_INTENT.
Constant Value: "android.intent.action.CHOOSER"

I just need to find where the UI is for the standard activity picker, so we can replace it with an older version
public static final String ACTION_PICK_ACTIVITY
Since: API Level 1
Activity Action: Pick an activity given an intent, returning the class selected.
Input: get*Extra field EXTRA_INTENT is an Intent used with queryIntentActivities(Intent, int) to determine the set of activities from which to pick.
Output: Class name of the activity that was selected.
Constant Value: "android.intent.action.PICK_ACTIVITY"

If just clicking on "just once" bugs you, then geez.

I agree it's super frustrating having to do this every time, i had hoped a double tap or something would have been baked in as an alternative.

That's exactly how it's always been. You're provided with a list of possible apps and you click the one you like to use that one time. If you find you keep using that one only, you could make this permanent and you're no longer prompted.
The behaviour I was hoping to see in JB4.1 was to still have the list of apps but to have it focused on the one I used the most or the last time. In 90% of the time I'd use YouTube to listen on my devices but in 10% of the time I'll use YouTubeRemote or TwonkyBeam or something else. If the list is long, I'd love to see it scrolled to the point where YouTube is in the middle and has the focus. The "Always" check-mark or selection is not even needed. One could long-touch the app they want to make favorite and be prompted if "Always", "Remove Always" or "Something else" would be the chosen behaviour from now on.
Thanks Android gets lots of attention from smart Devs and I'm sure someone will "fix" this soon.

I still can't believe Google devs made such a bad choice and probably 4.1.1 will correct this. Butter made tons of stuff smoother and faster but to add a double selection to every app start is baaaad :crying:
I personally enjoy this way of choosing a default app better than previous versions.

Could there be legal reasons for this? As I recall, the HTC One X was stopped by Apple regarding a patent on this action chooser when clicking on phone numbers.
Apple "invented" hotlinking it seems (to wich it holds a patent), just like they invented everything since the wheel, and google decided to work around this, as to avoid another pointless lawsuit from apple for something apple didn't even come up with, but holds the patent to.

Definitely a good thought. Does this even solve the problem as a work around? Maybe...
Copearch piger,
We all hear that Apple invented everything... it's ugly. The whole patent thing needs to go away, or I can't go to the washroom at the cottage - the sliding door opener has been there since late 1880-ies but now I know Apple invented it.
Back to my issue - I don't see how this is different in Linux, or even Windows 3.1 from last century. You click on a file with some .ext and you get to choose which app opens it from a list or possible ones and you might select one of them to be the default. I can't think of any other OS where you get the list, have to select the app and yet, have to make one more selection/click to say "just once". It just doubles the effort which was not a goal of Butter.
And to admin how much I hate that behaviour. After 4 days on JB4.1, I flashed CM9-nightly-Jul.1st last night.
Just relax. Once official code is released and custom roms are being created im sure someone will mod it.
DO YOU JELLY?
It seems that opening a new thread about this has caused way more unneeded clicks than you'll ever rack up by this change.

So, when I was in looking at one of the cards (for train times) I was presented with a number of options (maps, chrome, something else) I clicked chrome (and selected always). What I really wanted to do was select maps!!
Is there anyway to go back and change this for this specific action?

You have to go into the app's (Chrome) settings and clear defaults. This app makes it a little quicker https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pxlib.android.defaultappset
