[Q] Weird Square Mark on Back Button - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having this weird square mark on my back button that can easily track fingerprint. Let just say my screen is now totally clean without any fingerprints. With the phone turned off, if I started tabbing my thumb on the back button my finger print will be noticeably shown as a square. The size of the square fingerprint mark will be just big enough to cover the light of the button when you turn your phone on. It seems like there is a square portion on top of the back button that are easily tracked with fingerprints. I tried to wipe this particular part with hot moisturized cloth and alcohol but it doesn't seem to work.I do not notice this on the other side, and I am just wandering if any of you having this same problem. If you do, are there any ways to fix this? Thanks Alot!

me too man (but I got on back button, under home button, and next to "back" button !! LOL)...we can't clean. I try everything.
maybe we can remove only by glass polished (but we got gorilla glass so I think it will not work). Also you can put ultra crystal screen protector.
I will try tonight clean with gasoline...if that will not work also....than we can do nothing about it.

I often use my glass cleaning cloth to clean the entire front including the back button and it seems to work great on its own

No its still there.

I have been using alchol to keep wiping it everyday and it seems to lighten it a bit. I also tried blowdrying that particular part and wipe it with alcohol right after. It seems to lighten it a bit but it is still there. I guess we just very lucky -_-

Back button flaming....

Does anyone else have any issue with the back button flaking? The arrow isn't as Sharp anymore it's more like a like with a splodge for and arrow.
Can show a picture if you want to see what I mean

Mine is very similar. It isn't flaking, but the silver paint is almost completely rubbed away. The rest of the buttons are completely fine.
It's only a small problem, but I love this phone too much to replace it
Happening the exact same thing with my donnow why or what I can do to prevent it from flaking even more! this sucks cause I didnät even know that the buttons had some sort of cheap coating on them
are yours ingraved or just painted on? Mines are ingraved and with alot of use it doesn't seem to be rubbing off..

Yep, exactly this. Bought late March and the first wear was this by early August. The whole end of the top arrow pointer has flaked off on the back button and I've never used nails for pressing it for such to exacerbate the wear nor let the phone get wet or leave exposed to above typical heat (etc).

Wow do you lot have sandpaper for skin on your fingers?

Same!
All other buttons are fine. Top part of the arrow head is getting bigger and bigger.

My back button is fine, but the home button started to peel a bit
Maybe some batches of buttons are different ? Mine don't have this issue, but are starting to be unresponsive if I don't push quite hard on them.
Can confirm that button finishes do vary between Desires. I held my phone side by side with one in a Carphone Warehouse yesterday and noticed that the CW model had darker, shinier gunmetal buttons (like the black Desires?) whereas mine has the more matte, light grey buttons which have texture. I haven't had any issues with mine peeling thus far.

Best Case I've found so far

I picked this up from a buddy who owns a accessory cart. Its a hard clear plastic on the back and a hard rubber around the sides. It covers the phone really nice and doesn't stick to your pocket like gel skins.
Heres some pics of it on the phone.
I haven't got mine yet, but if it's not the same case, it's very similar to this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772826
Yup thats the case, great case.
Yeah other than the unlock/power button being a little troublesome its a great case. I found that since I normally unlock with my left hand I put the phone left top corner in the joint of my left thumb where it meets my palm and use my middle finger to push the unlock button. I'm not sure how I discovered it, but it seems to work every time after that.
Oh that which I mentioned above and its nearly impossible to cover the speaker hole if your volume is loud like mine is often after using Maps. My wife gives me the evil eye now and then when I turn it on in the morning.
Heres my photos of the phone in case.

When I first got it the power/lock button was not cut out. After about 2 days I cut out the lock button.

Heres the hole I cut. Gonna make it a little bigger and clean it up when I get a chance.
I got this case a couple days ago and I found that putting a small piece of paper the size of the indent for the unlock button makes the unlock/power button much easier to push. Be careful to not put a piece that is too thick because it will constantly be pushing the button and your phone will be constantly restarting. It has been working perfect so far. I will update in a couple of days. Hope this helps,
Russ
I cut mine too. I used an Exacto knife and cut from the inside. Other than the fact that it's not tapered, you can't tell that it's not a factory cut.
I like it for the fact that it makes the button easy to press but I also like it because it makes it easier to figure out which end is the top of the phone in the dark.
they need to make this case with the buttons cut out, I had to switch back to my mesh cases

It also has a decidedly round butt sticking out.

Am i the only one who keeps hitting the capacitive buttons?

I swear, every time I use the keyboard I mange to hit one of the capacitive buttons as I stretch my thumb to hit a far away letter. I'm sure a case with a lip will fix it but gee, couldn't they have put the buttons a little farther from the edge?
I seem to always hit the back button a lot with lower part of my hand when i am stretching to tap on something on the left part of the screen.
A lip would have ruined the aesthetics a bit as I love the flat body with rounded edges.
If you look at the phone, there isn't too much extra room to maneuver the buttons either.
Maybe our hands are just too small.
For that reason i prefer Sony xperia phone design with slim physical buttons.
It happens to me all the time but I quests I'm getting use to it now
Yeah, I'm always hitting it with the pad of my right thumb.
I usually don't but my daughter has a tendency to hit the menu button when watching YouTube videos

i seem more likely to accidentally have part of my hand touching one part of the screen as i try to reach the other side with my thumb. Obvious by the unintentional zoom in/out.
I'm sure your not the only one. But I don't have that problem.
That doesn't really happen to me. Maybe its the way I hold the phone? Could be just my hand.

I actually disabled the backlight for the capacitive buttons. Makes the phone look stealthy..
I've had issues with this when watching videos or playing games on landscape, for me what worked was I turned the phone so the usb port faces left side.

[Q]Nicely replace screen protector

Hi, Today i tried to put a screnn protection on my arc s but then i noticed it had one already. I took it off but now always i try to put either one on the screen, small air dots appear (probably because of dust or air beneath them). Has anyone applied a screen protector with success and without those air dots?
They are tricky to put on but you must clean glass with wipe to remove dust stickie marks etc, but if you remove and then try to reapply you will find those marks/air pockets are harder to remove.
So in short you need to apply fresh from packet.

Recommendations
its always recommended to allow the phone shops or people who are familiar with such things to perform it, however, if you still want to do it your self, turpentine is an excellent way to remove those markings, use caution though.
Do it in the bathroom. Trust me, it works, there's almost no dust in there which are the usual causes of air bubbles

Also use some water. Moisten the cleaned display. If there is dust under the protector, lift it rinse and try again. Water can be pushed out to the edges using a credit card..

[Q] Gunk in between cracks

Ok first of all....I didn't think it through and therefore was being stupid on that day but anyways, down to the question. Ok, so I pulled off my screen protector, I noticed I had a few micro scratches (OCD is crazy and I was the few that could acutally notice it). I decided to wax the scratches off. Sadly, it didn't work and the worst part is that I got it into the cracks of my phones. Such as the edges of the bezel, around the earpiece, and home button. Now I see the a white line (wax) from where it and stayed there. I have attempted to remove it with cleaning alchohol and tooth brushes but to no avail. Does anyone know of a way to get this stuff out?
Thanks, yo
Screen scratches can't never leave unless you actually replace the screen lol. Maybe 10 years they will be a magic potion to heal the cracks but nothing yet, maybe that should be my invention!!

I have the same dirt looking things between the glass and plastic but I couldn't get it off.. what really helps to keep it clean is a good case that covers the cracks.

I'm not talking about scratches but about the gunk that gets in between the cracks and crevices of the screen such as the space around the home button and bezel/screen edge.
I got some of it out with Goo Gone
I was in my school's library (office aid) and I saw some of that and decided to give it a go. It worked pretty good. However, I'll see how well it works after it dries and stays for a day. Crossing fingers right now.

I'm talking about how you should of just let the scratches be which led to This predicament, it's all good hope it works out.

Ah my bad. Well I am, I mean there is nothing really that you can do to the screen to the the scratches off (unless you want to replace the screen or sand it out, which is a waste for just a few scratches). Luckily the Goo Gone is working. But there are a few bits of leftover white wax that is left on the edge of the screen and around the earpiece. Still annoys the heck out of me (hard core OCD with it) so I'll continue working on it but glad it works. Well, at least it is better then it was.

Yeah I wouldn't call myself OCD but I understand how it is. I think a scratch would really bothered me but eventually ill get over it, hopefully that remaining wax is gets off keep trying lol

My daughter splashed some milk on my phone and never told me (her brother turned her in a couple of days later). It dried much the same way in little cracks and spaces. A wooden toothpick did wonders.
