Which kernel do you suggest? - HTC One X

Hey there
I recently got a one-month old HTC One X and it came with a crappy custom ROM. I then started asking around and reading tutorials until I was finally able to remove it and install a different one. I tried a couple until I settled with TeamVenom's Viper ROM, which in my opinion is an amazing ROM.
Unfortunately, however, the ROM wasn't very stable, which seems to be a common issue with custom ROMs. For one thing, the battery wasn't very good, but that could be due to the large screen and small 1800 mAh battery, but I am not too sure. The most annoying thing, however, was the constant signal dropping. Every day or two I'd find that the phone has absolutely no signal as though there's no sim card installed. I'd have to reboot in order for it to work, and sometimes it wouldn't and would work on its own later. The last problem which made me just uninstall it was the constant dropping of internet signal. The bars would be full and it would either say H or 3G but it still wouldn't work, the upload arrow would flash but not the download one.
I got fed up and decided to remove everything and install the latest stock version of Ice Cream Sandwich. I have been using it for about four days now and I love how stable it is but it still lacks a lot of features and I feel like JB was much quicker and snappier, and didn't eat up as much memory (I know that's usage dependent, but that's how I felt) lol.
Anyway, I was wondering if reinstalling Viper with a different kernel would actually help make it more stable and eliminate the network problems? I have absolutely no idea how to change/install a kernel so a newbie guide would be awesome.
Thank you so much.

My experience :
Fresh install of viper x and using the Alex-v kernel (stock + s2w function) is rock stable !
Works like a charm and very batt friendly. But that's the problem. 1 phone gets great batt life with faux kernel and another with stock.
I have no problems at all, no reboots, no lag !

Can I put a different kernel on arhd ?

Dependo on wich version, the ics version support all the sense based kernel , the jb none. I'd suggest you stock kernel for stability , bricked for battery and eprj for performance.

Would you please link me to that kernel? I'll try to find a tutorial on how to install a kernel. I just did a fresh installation of Viper ROM, by the way, and am now finishing setting it up and such.

Link to all the kernels/roms/mods etc.

Thank you so much. I cannot find the kernel mentioned above in that thread, though. Any ideas where I can find it?

Never mind, I found it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1870416
Now onto how to install it

I did some research and found this:
"if its a flashable zip, flash it from recovery.
if its a boot.img, fastboot it from bootloader
you can find softwares to do it too"
That's all fine and dandy, however, in Alex-V's thread there are two files to download:
boot_one_X_Alex-V_s2w_0.1 which is a bootable image
and
Endeavoru-Alex-V_S2W_Kernel_0.1 which is a RAR file
I don't know how to go about installing it. I am assuming I should install the RAR file using clockword recovery and flash the bootable file using fastboot?
Please help.

Hi this is simple to use and does the job if you are not fully up on using ADB
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/bricked-installer-makes-one-x-kernel-flashing-simple/

Thank you so much. I am going to attempt to download the application and flash the kernel using it.
By the way, should I flash the modules that are in Alex-V's thread or just the kernel?

With kernels, you need to flash the boot.img using fastboot and then ALWAYS flash the modules using CWM or TWRP.
Also. It is recommended that you repack the kernel depending on which ROM you're using.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815607
ALTHOUGH: The alex kernel is stock with swipe 2 unlock... so I don't think it would hurt if you didn't repack.

I guess it is done:

I just browsed for the kernel RAR file and flashed it. What about the modules, though, or are they not important?

This installer has done it all for you.
You're good to go!

Thank you so much, mate, I really appreciate all the help!

In the first page it said "add these two lines to the build file".. is that how it is done?
Thanks

I ran across this problem with one of my tabs, but not both.
If I accessed CWM using the power and Vol+ key CWM would boot, but fail at flashing.
Go to advanced, reboot recovery
Then try to flash the kernal, then rom.
Im about to post the link to the "package" that has the zimage so people can flash the kernal via heimdall.

I love this rom so much. Is there a way to fix rotation?

So I applied the .so file from the voodoo kernal thread, and rotation works on this ROM. It's also pairing with my bluetooth keyboard folio, so that's win. I pink puffy heart the browser, too. It's fun.

OK, first off.....NOT MY PORT.
But I did stay at a holiday in last night.
This is a cdma cm7 gingerbread port, in a way its kinda a hybrid build. I myself am working on stripping out all the cm7 stuff, fixing camera, apps, weird touchscreen bugs, etc.
I'm kinda shooting for an aosp-ish build, however, I am waiting on permission from original developer to publish any changes I make.
3g and wifi do work.

2.First boot) The ROM is de-odexed so it WILL take a while to boot up! Keep this in mind!
3.Installation) I am NOT responsible for ANY damage to your phone, Your on thee forums you accept that by flashing anything.Full wipe is recommended but not essential.
4.Overclocking) You can use overclocking kernels if you wish, make sure its compatible! I dont use them on my wifes WFS.

First of all: nice work, it's a great ROM, i installed and it's very snappy but, has a major inconvenient, at least for me, to little space on internal storage - around 60 mb. If you can solve this to be alt least 100 it will be great.

I just downloaded the new kernel (version0.5) and checked the system and meta info files. Both folders are empty. I just wanted to verify before I tried to flash this. Is it safe, or did it not download properly? I have tried downloading from a PC and my phone and got the same results.

I don't know what happened the first couple of download attempts, but i finally got it. Now time to flash the goodness!
Just flashed the 0.6 kernel. It's very smooth running at 1.7.Ran a few benchmarks and I have to say I'm impressed with the improvements over the stock kernel. Haven't had a chance to test the Bluetooth, but I'm sure it'll be a smooth as everything else. Thanks again for sharing.
My wifi isnt working for some reason.. Any help?
Did you flash the zip after the kernel? Mine is working fine, actually using it right now to post this reply.
Will it work like jmz's? By which I mean if we stay in the 4.0 updates it will be OK but as soon as we jump to jellybean we have to reflash?

i flashed jmz's instead and now its working.
Your loss lol.
My wifi still works just fine. I do have a problem with the wifi at work though. There is an unsecure wifi connection nearby but my work wifi connection uses WPA. My phone keeps trying to connect to the unsecure connection even after I tell it to forget that connection.
And it almost never wants to connect to the secured work wifi connection although it will connect maybe one out of ten times.
This didn't happen until after I rooted and installed CM9. I haven't tried it since updating to SICK kernel though.
Now at home it connects to my WPA connection every time!
I do have to say this is pretty cool. JMz's kernel seemed ok but I had to use a third part app to overclock (I used nofrills). Now with the sick kernel I can just do it from CM9's settings. I'm at 1.7GHZ with no problems right now! I haven't had a chance to test bluetooth yet but I can report that 720 video still crashes.. although 480 video works great!
I can't wait for new CM9 and CM10 updates! I don't know how to use Github so I'm waiting for a new ROM release...

I can confirm this kernel works for jmzoneV4, you'll need an app to overclock though. This kernel can be overclocked right from the settings on CM9. I think I'm gunna be using CM9 for a while...

BTW. The rom on this phone at the moment is myonev 3.5 with tk kernel
Funny how the PrimoU users have jumped on this first. lol
And, thank you for all the hours of beating on this phone
So, with a S-OFF device, we can install a ROM without using our PC to flash a kernel to it. This was a thing I loved so much with my old LG Optimus One (I see that device is still actually being developed actively). To test if this works, I just swapped over from MyOneV 3.5 (a 4.0.4 ROM requiring TK kernel) to Fabian's Mod, which is a continuation of CM 10 (a 4.1.2 ROM, requiring Hellboy CM 10 Kernel).
I have successfully booted into the ROM. No kernel push was required. Sweet!

yes but often the kernel isn't upto date in the ROM zip because we've never been able to take advantage of S-OFF. As of the moment all my ROMs have S-OFF support except for MiDroid. NexusPrimo also has the wrong kernel included although it still boots with that kernel. All my other ROMs have updated kernels in them.
can anyone enlighten me to what is s-off?
Does having S-Off Device add any functionality ?
EDIT: Just for Confirmation..so that I don't Face any Problem... Do I need to Go back to stock rom and unroot the device in order to do S-OFF ?? And will Developing Custom ROMS on S-OFF device become easy ??

I ran a RUU and actually went 100% stock just because i'm a tryhard. People already reported succesful S-OFF using MySense by ckpv5

[KERNEL][LOLLIPOP][10.6.A.0.454][ADVANCED STOCK WITH RECOVERY](UB Only)

Pure stock kernel for unlocked bootloaders with TWRP 2.8.6.0 recovery.
Created using flashtool and mkbootimg.
Rename odin.img.apk to boot.img and fastboot it to have UB stock kernel with TWRP.
To root, download Chainfires latest flashable zip from Here.
Then reboot and press press volume up when blue LED turns on to enter TWRP recovery, and flash the zip from the stored location.
NOTE: I don't own this device, but based on my work for Yuga, Some ZL users have requested I do the same for Odin.
Please test and report your findings here :good:

FLASHABLE ZIP
TWRP 2.8.7.0
Its working, installed and rooted with no problems at all.
:good: :good:ZL 454!!!
God bless you!
It took two weeks to someone release this, a simple thing that makes a huge difference in our devices. Thanks a lot!
If you want so give me any tip how to do a job like yours, I would try to update the lighting kernel to work on lollipop.

That would mean building the LP kernel from sources. This is just stock kernel extracted from kernel.sin, and packed into a boot.img with TWRP recovery added.
If you want to make a custom kernel, go ahead. Just split the boot.img and swap the stock zImage with the custom one.
I won't be building custom kernels for this device. Sorry.

Audio Stuttering
Audio stuttering issues are there after flashing the recovery.
Using music application and viper4android.
Used viper4android before flashing the recovery ,no issues were there till than.
Please find a solution.
Thank You:fingers-crossed:

As stated in the op, I don't own the device so I can't replicate the issue. But kernel and ramdisk are pure stock, so I can't understand why the problem exists.

FLASHABLE ZIP
TWRP 2.8.7.0
You should just stay away from V4A, I tried it out during kitkat, and all it did was make the audio experience worse and crack the speaker and headphones.
Just installed this, fantastic, it works perfectly and I have a recovery again, for some reason android just deleted my last one two weeks ago.

I already have unlocked boot-loader as I already have TWRP installed. So, should I go ahead and flash this file? Will it be good for my mobile?
I am a bit scared as last time also I almost bricked my phone.

You'll be fine. Just make sure you are on 10.6.A.0.454 first.
