[Mod] Increase Max Brightness - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

WARNING:
Using this mod may decrease battery life, decrease screen life and/or quality, cause overheating, cause your phone to blow up or cause other damage to your phone. Use at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage this mod causes to your phone.
This Mod will increase the max brightness of your phone by about 10%.
Note:
Auto Brightness must be turned off for this to work.
Root is required for this Mod.
Instructions:
Download and run app attached to this post.
Or. ..
echo 1 > /sys/class/backlight/panel/auto_brightness
If you reboot or enable auto brightness you have to run it again.
The best way to tell if it worked would be to run it when your screen is already at full brightness. You'll see it go a bit brighter.
Tested on T-Mobile Note II, but this may work in many Samsung Galaxy phones.

Seems to have worked, but comparing brightness on one device by eyes is tough. It certainly didn't break anything though!

Is there a way to lower minimum brightness? Cause even at the lowest brightness, its bright as hell

screen filter or root dim work. they place a transparent black overlay on top of the screen and dims everything. works best with oled/amoled screens as the overlay actually lowers the light output where if you were using a traditional led backlight it'll still have the same brightness but the hue of everything would be reduced.

I also find Galactic Night to be useful. I often use red mode if driving so I don't have a mini spot light in my car.

Thanks

Look for an app called "screen dim"
It lets you take your brightness and contrast down to ZERO.
Caution: can be really hard to see if you do that. I know, I've spent 10 min in a dark closet trying to open the app again after accidentally backing out of the app with the screen all the way down... pm me if you can't find it and I'll get you a copy.

+1 for Galactic. I used this on my old GS2 and loved using the red filter for reading at night. It was less bothersome for my wife and it made me fall asleep easier because it doesn't have any blue wavelengths, which I think I read that it can cause difficulty in sleeping.
Haven't rooted my GN2 yet but glad to hear it works on it.

Thanks a lot! Works great with 4.1.2

iPhone5 is twice as bright as this phone. Nuff said.

but I have a Note 2 not an iPhone 5. Personally i think the screen is plenty bright enough. Not trying to troll or nothing, just want to understand better, but i like i said i personally dont see many requests for a brighter screen. how would one benefit from having a screen brighter than the brightest stock setting?

Screen Brightness Dynamically changes...

Hey everyone,
I've been playing around with my new phone for a few hours now.
So far, I love it!
However, I have noticed a strange bug. The browser seems to be dimming webpages.
To see what I'm talking about:
1) Open google.com
2) open the tab viewer
3) click on the google tab - it expands to fill the screen
4) as soon as it fills the screen, the page immediately 'dims'
As it is filling the screen, the background appears nice and white. However, once it completely fills the screen, the background immediately dims to a darker white...
VIDEO
Google Bug Report
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23765#c0
OK, this isn't just limited to the browser. It happens on pretty much every app with a white splash screen. I.e. opening Facebook. The splash screen is nice and white, but when the content loads, the white background becomes dimmer and more gray...
Does anyone else know what I am talking about? I'm on 4.0.1 if that matters.

The phone dims purposely. I. Don't know if there is a setting to stop it though. I believe it is powersaving feature. Touching your screen resets the time for dimming and screen off though.

I'm not talking about the 'about to go to sleep' dim. This is a very slight, almost unnoticeable, dim when the white animation completes. For example, say I open an app that has a white splash screen and a white background. The app opens with the very white splash scree, then as soon as the content loads, the very white background 'changes' to a more 'off-white' or 'gray' color...
Can others please chime in? I really want to look into this bug, but I need to know if it is limited to me.
This is crazy now. Open google.com on the browser. Then tap the search bar (on the webpage) to bring up the keyboard. The white background of google.com becomes whiter when the keyboard opens. Close the keyboard with the back button, and the background becomes dimmer again.
Even the status bar partakes in this "dimming" action, so it is not limited to the web page.
WTF?
I see this too, it looks like it is caused by dynamic contrast adjusting the contrast based on the picture.

Thanks for your reply!
Anyway to keep the contrast the way it is when the keyboard is open? The whites look so much better that way...

I'm not sure... Contrast is pretty bad when the screen is predominantly white. However, as soon as some darker colors are introduced (menu/keyboard), the whites brighten up and contrast improves.
Could this be because the all white screen draws more power than a screen that is only partially white?
Go to a mostly white screen (i.e. Google.com) and slowly pull down the notification bar. You will see that the white of the webpages gradually becomes brighter... This is really bizarre...
Good way to test is type in about:blank into the browsers address bar for a full white page.

It originally annoyed me. However, I probably will get used to it in a couple of days.
I was originally worried that it was just my phone doing this (due to the lack of replies on this thread). However, now that is seems like this occurs on all GNs, I'm pretty relieved
Whatever, this screen is gorgeous when displaying colors. Black-on-white contrast could be better (i.e. black text on an all-white webpage), but it is good enough...
I'm still wondering if it is hardware or software that is causing this. If it was software, I would definitely like the higher contrast white all the time...
Mine also does this D:

I think the galaxy s2 and other Samsungs like the note do this, but it is by design from the setting which can be turned off. It supposedly is for power saving of bright colors.
My question is any GSM nexus user seeing this? Cause I attempted the steps in this thread in a dark room and dinr notice any issue whatsoever. Is this a Verizon version issue where maybe all lte versions have this enabled to conserve power?

Lower brightness possible?

Good day everyone,
When using my device in low light surroundings, i tend
to experience the brightness as too high, is there any
way of lowering the minimum brightness?
I'm running the note2core std kernel, stock debloated
dlk7 rom (rooted )
I have tried the following with ROM Toolbox pro;
Go to build.prop editor
Found the value "ro.lcd_min_brightness"
Standard value was 20, lowering this number did
nothing for me, i tried 15, 12, 5 and 0..
I have also tried lowering this value whike using
another kernel like stock, redpill and N.E.A.K.
And also not working on stock ROM..
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot

Screen Filter is good, but it doesn't really lower the brightness. It applies a filter which makes the display darker. Any screenshot you take will be darker. But other than that, it's perfect for low light situations
I like this app:

My vote is for Screen Filter. I have used rt every night and every morning for the last 2 years. Never any problems.
Let's change my question;
Is it hardwarewise possible to lower
the minimum brightness? If so, please share
I wondered this too and I'm surprised that there hasn't been a mod/tweak to allow you to get the brightness as low as possible without the use of apps. I've tried everything from editing build.prop to decompiling framework-res.apk, but nothing to seems to really work.

This is likely done on purpose. Imagine the frustration of going outdoors and your screen was set so dim that your phone is useless until you can see enough to raise the brightness.

Nope, lux definitely works by adding a filter in sub-zero mode. Not that this matters except when taking screenshots because as I said before, on an OLED screen this is essentially the same thing. But thanks for the recommendation, lux is a very nice app.

Same here. It lightens up when I get near a light, but if I'm further away, I usually turn it off and keep it at a comfortable level.
this has been mentioned a few times already and I find I'm opposite of you guys. It's too dang bright! you can install lux or velis to control auto brightness to your liking. you can even make some tasker tasks to force certain profiles based on various sscenarios like if your conn2cted to a certain ssid switch to a less aggressive setting or whatever. I think both require the paid versios for the tasker plugins. ive paid for both and like lux better since sub zero settings are easier and it "sleeps" quicker if I want it off.
It's always too dim for me. One of the first things I turn off and just control it manually.
before the mk1 update there was an extra slider in the notifications section that you could use to modify the auto a bit. Sadly that's gone now.

both lux and velis work fine on all my devices - auto up and down.

Screen and black levels WAY too black?

Compared to my N4, the screen has deeper blacks, but in a very bad way. You lose so much detail on some pictures, even at full brightness. Like with a picture of black fur my N4 will show all the nuances and shadows caused by the fur, but the Sony will just be pitch black. The amount of detail is pretty significant. Overall, the tone of the screen is just darker, and it kind of makes you sad using it.
I have the same opinion, this is the most annoying thing on this phone. I had very strong feeling to return it back to the shop.
Any solution for this? I can increase screen backlight, but it is not ideal solution and it does not solve the problem.

Yes, blacks are heavily crushed on this device. Here's an earlier discussion of it with links to calibration testers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646749
See Erica Griffin's mini review where she discusses the calibration problems and charts the wonky gamma levels here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7tQ5n32no8#t=564
If you don't want to install the Display Tester app, here's a link to a black level test image for viewing in your phone browser:
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
Ideally all of the black squares should be distinguishable to ensure proper reproduction of detail in shadowed areas of an image or video. With Nexus 5, for instance, squares are distingushable from square 2/3 upward.
For Sony Z1 Compact with JDI panel, squares are distinguishable only from square 7 upward. Result: all black levels below 7 look the same on the Z1C, meaning no detail can be distinguished at these levels. One consequence is that low light photos look very inaccurate compared to how they'll look on other displays - if you share or edit them, for example.
I have exactly the same feeling, im from a nexus 4 too and i try to watch some movies on my Z1C and the contraste is juste horrible.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

This has nothing at all to do with the brightness of the black levels. This is about how many black levels can actually be seen with this screen. And yes, this is a legitimate complaint.

This exactly. And thank you for your previous post, it was extremely informative. I was really hoping I just had a faulty screen because I love the phone otherwise. I really love sony's products but the screens on the Z1, Z1s, and Z1c have all been problematic, particularly in dealing with blacks and whites. I really hope these problems are addressed in the Z2 because I really need a replacement for this N4.
Edit: So this affects JDI panels too? From what I read, the JDI panel is much better than the AUO panels.
This is mine, JDI panel...

Heh, remember that there's little point taking a screenshot for comparison unless 1) you shoot it with a camera that has accurate black levels 2) you view it on a screen that has accurate black levels. Otherwise we're all just looking at different things.
Useful info to share in this thread would be how many black levels from that test page you can actually see on your screen (i.e. the number of the last square you can distinguish from another).

Edit: Argh, sorry, my mistake, it should have been 7 instead of 13, as stated in the original thread - corrected now. You can only really see those levels at full brightness in a dark room, though. More detail is lost at normal brightness levels where you aren't being blinded by the whites.
Have to agree, black levels are way too dark. You lose loads of detail in any dark scene, video and photos. Also gamma levels are far too low, at about 1.6 across the board. They should be around 2.2. I'm coming from a galaxy s2 which now seems to have more accurate colour reproduction. Which is disappointing considering it's a super amoled screen vs an ips panel.

Excellent, excellent post! Thank you so much for this. It definitely works!

There is very simple workaroud for this . Install "Screen Adjuster" app from Google Play, open it, set Contrast value to ca "-30", switch "Adjuster OFF" to "ON" and voila, now you can see black levels up to 1 otherwise, I'm able to clearly recognize only values up to 7 on full brightness on 4.4.2 latest FW .757 with JDI panel using Color Test app

Wish I saw this earlier. Might have to buy it again. Can anybody show examples with dark, detailed photos?

I just wonder why the hell the Screen adjuster needs full network access, view my network connections, reads precise position GPS, needs access to my bookmarks and history, read the device accounts... Why ? I prefer that sony will modify the contrast in next firmware...

And use 20% of my batteries...
Excellent. I can now see it from box 1. Not sure about battery draining though. So disabling the app for now and waiting for an actual fix in the next release. For some reason, I am very happy that it's a bug in the configuration settings and not an actual hardware issue. Sony has again succeeded in screwing their awesome specs with a ****ty software.

It's ad-ridden, but there is a cheap paid version that requires only the essential draw over other apps permission and does not drain battery

Need auto brightness to be little brighter

Is there a way to set auto brightness a little higher?

It does has the adaptive brightness feature (move the brightness slider while auto brightness is on) which I find too dim even at high settings. I've been using the Lux Lite app. You can link screen the screen brightness to readings on the ambient light sensor. It has bee working well for me so far.
You can try LUX from Google play.
Both lux and lux lite work well.
My G4 screen brightness does not change when auto is selected and you slide the slider up and down.
Contrary to my nexus 6 in which sliding the brightness slider while auto brightness is active does work. This is called adaptive brightness on the nexus 6 and one thing I really miss on the G4

Which version are you using? I'm in the AT&T version and mine works.

Tmo. Really yours does? That's kind of crappy if that's the case that tmo would remove a feature like that  Awesome BTW that yours does I'm jealous!

Don't be too jealous. It's too dim indoors even with the slider all the way up. It doesn't make a drastic change either. It works much better on the Nexus 6.

Ahh okay gotcha. Yeah I've really been enjoying lux it works very good
Auto brightness works well in bright sunlight and medium lit situations (i.e. daylight indoors) but is way too low at night on my unlocked EU version (H815). I currently work around it by setting it to 26% or so and switching auto-brightness off at night.
That's the kind of issue I would expect to get fixed by a fw update in the near future. I might try Lux as well if it bugs me too much.

Try lux lite it works excellent and you can just set it to exactly what you described as your issue... Night time low ambient light. It's funny, I've set lux to put brightness at 26% at night in low light just as you do manually. It's perfect brightness imo.
I noticed that when you're watching a video the screen dims further.. If you acces the quick settings menu the brightness is way brighter and your eyes burst out in flames..
I've noticed that when the ambient light is very low, the adaptive auto brightness stops working altogether, so unless you disable auto brightness and set it manually as someone already mentioned they do, then it will be too dark whatever you set the slider to. If you then make say your TV give off a bit more light (make it full brightness on a white screen for instance) and then you'll see the adaptive slider start working again, but as soon as the ambient light dims again, it stops working..
I can't see why the adaptive brightness would be disabled when the ambient light is low, it should still work, so they should address this in a later fw release as was mentioned as well.
I agree that in low light situations the auto brightness sets the screen too dim. Doubt there'll ever be a "fix". It's been this way since the g3 from my exp. And although we mostly all agree, there are tons of ppl that I know who prefer it this dim, or even dimmer. Some people just have really sensitive eyes I guess and I just can't imagine lg considering this a " bug" rather than a "feature". But I am personally with y'all on this subject of the g4.
I'm using tmo version and u cannot adjust the slider when set to auto. U can set auto off, then increase the slider, and reactivate the auto brightness, but to no prevail. So att users have it better than us even if it makes a subtle difference. Sigh
Be careful with 3rd party brightness apps i had lux and it disabled some buttons.

Lux is a life saver when compared to non configurable factory auto brightness

You can fix that by selecting "Alternate Overlay" in advance setting.

G4'ed it!
I'm a fan of Lux... It gives you so much more control over the brightness setting.

Agreed. Lux makes the G4 auto brightness perfect

You bet! That drove me nuts too! It's actually a safety feature in Android and not a lux "bug" ...
