I've just spent about 8 hours trying to get Ubuntu installed on my slowly failing PC (I was on xp so decided change was needed).
I finally did it, now I'm getting "Archive type not supported" when trying to open the 7z file.
I downloaded the Linux version of Flashtool so how do I install it? I can't get my internet dongle to work (there's another thread if Google doesn't help) so either how do I open it or what's a good 7z file opener?

I'd slap myself if I could be bothered. I'd like to blame that on alcohol but I doubt being sober would have made much difference.
I'm on the Software Centre bit, it looks like it needs downloading. Connecting to the internet is on my to-Google list. I downloaded a p7zip thing to my phone, copied to PC, but I don't know how to install it. I've unzipped it, that's as far as I got.

Those udev rules appear in the Flashtool installation site. And certainly "udev rules Android Ubuntu 11.10" will get you good results in Google.

What do you call the file?
Sent from my R800i using XDA
99-android.rules would be the name, and the folder would be "/etc/udev/rules.d". You need superuser permissions in your Linux installation to edit something there.
User friendly way: enter terminal and type:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/99-android.rules
[insert the proper rules and save the file]
sudo restart udev
And that should make the trick with the udev rules.

Ok im no newbie. Far from actually. But i cannot for the life of me flash any generic ftf file. The drivers installed on my computer once usb debugging was turned on. Flashtool sees my device, when I click check drivers it shows my device id. Even adb recognizes device. When attempting to flash a ftf file it starts off fine, once I unplug usb, turn off device, hold power down, reconnect usb it aborts shortly after.
Are there drivers im not installing or are not aware of? Am I doing something wrong? Please help
Update got it fixed. Now running ics. Thanks guys

Um start the flash with your phone off and unplugged. Wait till flashtool tells you to plug the phone in then hold the volume down button and plug in the USB. It should start the process then.

Interesting as I thought that the device needed to be detected initially by fasttools, but if it's off how can it recognize USB debugging or model, etc? All that is useless I guess?

Flashtool will recognize your phone right off, but you still need to install the flashing drivers for it to flash firmware. If you haven't already, go to the drivers folder in flashtool and run the exe.

Windows installs the adb drivers (which are needed to run the root scripts), this is separate from the flashtool drivers. You only need to run the exe in flashtool/drivers/, it will install the correct drivers from the lt28. Make sure you have the most recent version of flashtools.

First install the android sdk. Then extract it and open it. Then click sdk folder then click platform-tools folder. Put the ics boot.img system.img and userdata.img in the platform tools folder. Then turn your phone off. Make sure your bootloader is unlocked. Hold down the search key while plugging the phone in and a blue light should be on. Then while holding right shift right click and then press open command window here. Then type in
'fastboot flash boot (name of the boot.img)' then type in 'fastboot flash system (name of the system.img)' then type 'fastboot flash userdata (Name of the userdata.img)' then type 'fastboot erase cache'. Exclude the apostrophes
