Ubuntu and Flashtool and 7z files - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just spent about 8 hours trying to get Ubuntu installed on my slowly failing PC (I was on xp so decided change was needed).
I finally did it, now I'm getting "Archive type not supported" when trying to open the 7z file.
I downloaded the Linux version of Flashtool so how do I install it? I can't get my internet dongle to work (there's another thread if Google doesn't help) so either how do I open it or what's a good 7z file opener?

Wait a minute, I don't know if I'm on Ubuntu. That's just what I associate with Linux. Apparently I'm on Nautilus 3.2.0. I thought it was Ubuntu 11. something (the latest non-beta version).

Paraphrase: package 7zip full not available... referred to by another package. It has no installation candidate.
I thought Linux was supposed to be better and easier...

I'd slap myself if I could be bothered. I'd like to blame that on alcohol but I doubt being sober would have made much difference.
I'm on the Software Centre bit, it looks like it needs downloading. Connecting to the internet is on my to-Google list. I downloaded a p7zip thing to my phone, copied to PC, but I don't know how to install it. I've unzipped it, that's as far as I got.

Those udev rules appear in the Flashtool installation site. And certainly "udev rules Android Ubuntu 11.10" will get you good results in Google.

What do you call the file?
Sent from my R800i using XDA

99-android.rules would be the name, and the folder would be "/etc/udev/rules.d". You need superuser permissions in your Linux installation to edit something there.
User friendly way: enter terminal and type:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/99-android.rules
[insert the proper rules and save the file]
sudo restart udev
And that should make the trick with the udev rules.

Thanks. I could open Flashtool yesterday; today I get Permission denied.

Flashtool issues !!fixed!!

Ok im no newbie. Far from actually. But i cannot for the life of me flash any generic ftf file. The drivers installed on my computer once usb debugging was turned on. Flashtool sees my device, when I click check drivers it shows my device id. Even adb recognizes device. When attempting to flash a ftf file it starts off fine, once I unplug usb, turn off device, hold power down, reconnect usb it aborts shortly after.
Are there drivers im not installing or are not aware of? Am I doing something wrong? Please help
Update got it fixed. Now running ics. Thanks guys

Um start the flash with your phone off and unplugged. Wait till flashtool tells you to plug the phone in then hold the volume down button and plug in the USB. It should start the process then.

Interesting as I thought that the device needed to be detected initially by fasttools, but if it's off how can it recognize USB debugging or model, etc? All that is useless I guess?

Flashtool will recognize your phone right off, but you still need to install the flashing drivers for it to flash firmware. If you haven't already, go to the drivers folder in flashtool and run the exe.

Windows installs the adb drivers (which are needed to run the root scripts), this is separate from the flashtool drivers. You only need to run the exe in flashtool/drivers/, it will install the correct drivers from the lt28. Make sure you have the most recent version of flashtools.

That's a very good question but from what I know if I'm not mistaken is that you possibly can't root your phone with a Mac

From my understanding no, Odin will not work unless it's on Windows, I've heard people run it on a virtual OS on a Mac. You should just ask a friend really to save you time.
From my Bauer seed in minecraft
Install windows on your Mac is an option
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Yeah, running a virtual OS is possible but a risk, so I suggest you go to a friend or install windows with bootcamp
Duel boot Linux or Ubuntu s latest . then get adb working in my Sig on PC or desktop view are three lines in my Sig .open terminal and paste those in one at a time and enter.you have adb. Then unzip the zip push the root and push its su file via adb to their rightful place that should root your phone without Odin or just get adb working on your Mac and do the same. I like Linux and Ubuntu though, over Mac. Or here *-X-*
also get fastboot working so that you can use it to install a custom recovery like twrp with this command `~ fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
Before Odin was ADB.

just get a windows7 and use odin macs complicate things for Android users.
or dual boot Linux Mint for free.
Or Root with Mac via ADB
that guide is for the Nexus Toro so of course you will use only recoveries and files for the t-989.. the su file is somewhat universal as in the newer su files will work with most if not all devices Ive encountered certainly a su file that works for nexus would work for our device and so would superuser .apk but recoveries are device specific and the wrong one will result in a possible brick, very likely.

Make sure you go to the Java website and install the correct version (believe it had to be 32bit Java for Kitchen to work and sign roms correctly).
That was one of my problems.
But im having other problems now.
I zipalign and sign my rom, then make it into a working zip, but whenever I try to flash it does not, I dont think the Kitchen is producing the right rom files (I.e. Meta Data Inf, System, etc.)
Anyone got some input?
Do I have to mod something in the Kitchen for it to work with S4 Roms?

Android Stock and Google Play Edition are a bit different so you will have to do some research and decide what ROM you want to go with.
For our device we have 2 recovery options, TWRP and Clockwork. Both can be found in the Origional Android Development forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416273

I am not going to say one is better than the other. I use TWRP, but mostly because I am use to it from other devices.

I just used flashify to install TWRP 2.6.3.3 less then a minute time.
Try this option. xda-developers - View Single Post - [RECOVERY] TWRP 2.6.3.3 touch recovery http://bit.ly/I2mP0P
Type: su
After that, cd to the location of the .img file: (i.e. if it was on the root of the sd card then...)
cd /sdcard/
Finally, flash the image to the recovery partition:
dd if=recovery-xxx.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p34
Here's the best place to start looking for answers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44905464
If coming from ios, realize there are a lot more people involved in the rom/themeing process so be more patient.
However, above all remember to search first. Probably 90% of whatever you are looking for has already been asked, so save yourself the heartache and try searching first.
After that, there are tons of people here to help you if the above tips don't work. Just understand that you have to put a little effort on your part first if you have an issue, that way it makes it easier for others to help troubleshoot.
Good luck and welcome to the community!

I followed the directions from a few posts above.
First, download android terminal emulator from play store.
Second, move the recovery file to the root of sdcard, noting the filename. (in my screenshot, the file is named the same as yours openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7vzw )
Open terminal emulator. In first window, type in "su" without quotations in the command line and hit enter. Wait for the popup to allow root access and allow it. On the returned command line, type in "cd /sdcard/" without quotations and hit enter. The returned command line should say something like "[email protected]:/sdcard"
Type the command "dd if=openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p34" without quotations and hit enter.
Should look something like this:

You have a comma in your filename right after "twrp"

That adb and fastboot drove me crazy. It was so much easier with Flashify. About 30 seconds. With flashify and Meenova sd card reader no more fastboot and adb for me.
