[Q] play running extremely slow :( - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've had my play for just over a year, I've installed countless roms and had a ball doing it. Unfortunately I think the old girl is struggling to keep up with the last couple of custom roms, cm9.1 and mark phyton's un/official ICS rom. The latter is the one I am running now and even after a reinstall it is nearly unusable, it's extremely laggy and freezes on apps like facebook, kindle and youtube. Ram sits at 30-40mb free, I have link2sd running to free up internal memory and am overclocked to 1.2ghz with setcpu. I know ICS is pushing the limits of the play's capabilities but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be this bad can anyone suggest anything to try to get better performance please?

ICS roms are not suitable for the play. If u want better performance use a GB rom instead

facebook uses alot of resources...also markphytons unofficial rom is quite good I use to have around 130 mb free ram...the rom comes with a very nice app called pimp my rom which it has a good few options into speeding up the rom very handy....

An ICS Rom that doesn't lag like hell !

guys , i've tried several ics roms over few months and they are either buggy or laggy , so my question is : is there a rom for arc that doesn't laggg.
i've already tried JJ's in addition to some other roms , it always starts nice and smooth at first , but after a while it gets laggy
currently using JJ's Hybrid 3.1 with about 140 mbs on internal ram (using link2sd). and overclocked at 1.4 GHz
so is there anything that will work or should face the inevitable and revert back to Gingerbread
also : do you guys think , that jellybean roms , by any chance are(will be) smoother than ics
None, i tried all of them, from custom to stock. They seem fast and responsive at first, then i siwtch between a few apps then try to use the keyboard .... BAM, 10-20 secs lag.
All the ICS roms lag like hell in the moment when i need my phone the most (write a note, call a number, answer a call).
I am back to GB until CM10 goes a little stable, if it keeps the same lag as ICS then i will go back to GB forever on this device.

yeah , that's what i thought :|
i feel you bro , i think i'll go ahead , switch back to GB and finally , .. admit that my single core arc is too crappy for ICS.
DAMN YOU sony ,if it weren't so sexy , i would never have bought it.
Oh THE IRONY , back when i bought it , the ugly S2 was like "70$ only" more expensive than the arc !!!!
I would never go for S2 over Arc S, if I could choose again. But yes, Gingerbread runs much smoother than ICS, but I think that new ICS update is not that terrible, and I never had any "few seconds" lag, no matter how many apps I start one after another...
@ningen90: lol at the "DAMN YOU SONY, if it weren't so sexy" haha sorry, i was also victimized by its sexiness I also tried to scout for an ICS candidate, but there are always comments that it lags, so im running GB at the moment. some people say its ok, but most of the replies are about lag damn you sexy arc... hahaha
Actually ICS wasn't optimized for performance ...it is going to lag from time to time even on A high end devixe ...try Jelly Bean ...it is the evolution of ICS to performance .

Any of you tried arconium? I know some ICS roms lag, but with arconium im pretty happy
I got an S2 too btw
Try Jelly Sandwich, mate. With XArc kernel, of course.

no chance of any smoothness of ICS on ARC
ICS was meant to run properly on devices with ram greater than 512mb. With only 512mb of ram it can only hold the necessary system applications of ANDROID. SO while running ICS on arc it RUNS SMOOTHLY FIRST but afterwards the apps get CACHED it starts lagging
REALLY LIKE HELL (with only 100-150mb ram gets left what do you expect its PERFORMANCE).SO i don't think that there is any possibility of running ICS smoothly forever on ARC.:crying:
JELLY BEAN on the other hand will also be requiring HIGH SPEC DEVICES..SO don't expect it also run without any lag on arc.
I don't know why SONY ERICSSON only put 512mb of ram in all it's 2011 xperia devices while also assuring to RUN OUT THE ICS UPDATE knowing the fact that ICS requires a higher RAM value.
I like the INTERFACE of ICS but to use it on the ARC IS TO GIVE UP the speed and performance.I used it for a month(tried every ics and cm9 rom)
but was too too UPSET. SO gone back to the GINGER BREAD ROM(it's best for the xperia arc).:good:
TO USE ICS SMOOTHLY I SUGGEST TO BUY ANOTHER DEVICE WITH HIGH END SPECS.

Jellybean rom is far better than ICS. No laggy....butter smooth.
I installed FXP's CM10. It was awesome experience. But the rom is in alpha stage....but we can use it as daily rom. :good:
Hope we will get jellybean stable version early.

The lagging is down to free memory - FYI I had terrible lag on GB too before I realised. You really need to be careful what you allow to run in the background.
Basically, you need to make sure there's somewhere around 100 MB free ram most of the time to guarantee a lag-free experience. You can use ES Task Manager to see what apps are consuming memory, and the 'running' tab in Manage Apps to see the services. Bear in mind widgets can be very memory hungry, particularly if you have 5 screens full of them; it's often best to use something like Beautiful Widgets which allows you to have various different widgets running, but they consume the same memory as one.
Just like on Windows, some apps pointlessly run at startup, consuming your system resources even when they're not being used - LivewareManager is one example. Worse still, these apps often restart automatically if killed. You can use SystemCleanup and/or Autorun Manager to stop this behaviour.
You may find alternatives to apps that need to run in the background also. For example, there's a taking caller ID app called eCID which needs to run all the time and consumes about 30 MB. I switched to a very similar app, Spoken Caller ID, and that just starts when the phone receives a call, and stops after it has done its job. The same is true of antivirus apps and others.
Some apps need to run as an "accessibility service", which is also always running in the background. Lightflow is an example of this, as is Tasker and some SmartWatch notification apps. Work out if you really need these. For example, I quickly realised that Tasker could effectively do the job my battery saver app and lightflow were doing all by itself.
If you use an alternative keyboard, the regular one keeps running in the background. Also, if you've replaced the TTS engine with one that sounds less robotic, it might be the case that one app is running for each installed voice. The solution here is to 'freeze' those using Titanium Backup or SystemCleanup.
I don't have any lag on my Arc, thanks to reducing what apps are running all the time to just the ones I actually want.

Totally Disagree.
just Have a Look on CM9 & CM10.
They Do not Lag.
Its A Problem Of Sony,Because Sony Did Not Optimised The ICS Rom.
So They Lagged.
Our Xperia Arc.Can Run It Smoother.:silly:
Only Thing It Requires A Good Rom Dev. Like Fxp.
Latest 587 firmware is far better, but yes, you always need to freeze unwanted services. It's not always Sony fault, when you use maps and quit the app, there is part of it that stay in background, like location service, same for the store.
Those Google apps are among the worse thing, they dont quit, stay in background, eating memory and cpu.
Another cause of laginess is the constant log writing, everything is log, i use CM7 on a Desire and there is much less logs. I don't know if there is a means to stop logging, i read a lot about logcat, but nothing useful.
And remember to always quit an application by the menu, if there is one or by return. using home simply put it on background.

ram and internal storage are two very different things, you seem to be confusing them - link2sd gives you more free internal storage, it does nothing for your ram. I'd bet your problem is free ram.
now i'm using JellySandwich 3.3 with infamous kernel, with link2sd and a lot of apps installed, the HTC keyboard (i kind of love it), and the perfomance it's good, so as the battery life (about 10 hours with heavy usage, games, wifi browsing...) the only thing with this rom, it's the scrolling on some heavy web pages (like phonearena), it's not so smooth like stock rom, or another ones that i try.
My Xperia Arc has ~220MB free of ram with locked bootloader and it's un-rooted, and I'm on ICS 4.0.4 with firmware 4.1.B.0.578.
I use stock rom, and stock kernel, and I'm using Apex launcher
Did you try this??'

Guys,
The Vendor folder exist on both devices, but on LT15 Firmware the vendor is a partition and include apps, different from LT18 where the folder is only for configuration and is inside SYSTEM partition.
Because of this is that LT15 has a small SYSTEM partition when flash the LT15 firmware.
What I did was flash LT15 firmware, make a backup of SYSTEM and VENDOR folder with ADB and TAR, and then flash LT18 SYSTEM and USERDATA partition only (with FlashTool). This remakes the partition table and resize SYSTEM and DATA partition to ~400mb.
Than after flash SYSTEM and USERDATA from LT18, I format the SYSTEM partition and restore both SYSTEM e VENDOR backup that I make, placing the configuration files of VENDOR partition in folder VENDOR of SYSTEM partition, and moving the APKs from APP folder in VENDOR to APP folder on SYSTEM root.
This worked perfectly, and now I have all APKs in SYSTEM/APP and the partition size of LT18 firmware with LT15 firmware.

I did it on my arc and it runs fine and have 420 mb for apps, no llags, no frezess, and i think more batery life... try it!, but i didn't instal any tweak, or external widget manager or apps for beautify, i'm very happy with it.

Is it advisable to update to ICS from Gingerbread on Arc S...?

Should i update my phone to ICS from Gingerbread??
Or its not a good idea?
Performance vs looks
IF you really want a beautiful experience(WITH LAG) of the interface(FOR A LITTLE WHILE) in lieu of the OVERALL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE then please UPDATE TO ICS.
BUT if you want to have a better experience(WITHOUT ANY LAG) with all of the phone's feature THEN STAY WITH THE GB.
I have tried almost every ICS ROM for the ARC and almost every ROM HAS A LAG(in the beginning it doesn't come into action but after some time when caching of system applications start it's the most HORRIBLE experience with the phone and sometimes you can't even use your phone for call or messaging (LIKE IT'S LAGGING LIKE HEELLL) ):crying:
SO it's upto you..what i think
I AM BACK TO GB FROM ICS
REST IS YOUR CHOICE:good:

ICS consumes more resources, there's no way round that, but a properly configured Arc can easily run ICS with ZERO lag. You do need to be careful what apps you have running in the background - see this post for more details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30809767&postcount=11
Personally, I would never go back to GB. My phone is so much more stable on ICS, you can run a number of tablet-only apps, battery life is significantly improved, etc.
I've not tried the latest Sony rom, but previous ones have not been great - too bloated and sluggish. Custom roms are IMHO definitely the way to go for ICS on the Arc.
Update?
Just Update to the latest .578 ICS and if you feel the device is slow/irresponsive use Bloatware Remover to make RAM consumption better
Xperia Arc Can Handle ICS , Great as GB.
It depends Upon the Developer Of it.
I say go for a try
If i install Sony's official ICS will i lose my root, and will i have to install different kernel? I am currently using doomLord's kernel.
Hi
To upgrade or not to upgrade…
Few days ago I come back to old GB 2.3.4 simply because I have some unfinished business with some games I didn’t finish while on GB – and also sort of compare to what was like to be on GB again comparing to ICS… (anyways it takes me @ 15min to switch to any Android ver. And with CWM backup it a matter of minutes to be back on favorite ROM…)
Man I felt like I was driving on handbrake all this time… you feel like flying fast… no LAG whatsoever it feels great again… speed wise.
From the moment ICS come out I already flashed it via flashtool and rooted, immediately I started to try out different kinds of ROM modes out there… tried like maybe 10 of them (could only use some as I need to stay with locked BootLoader… so no custom kernels.) Anyway after so many months of playing around – the only ROM which suited my needs was JJROM 3.1 – also the look of it is great for me… so I stayed with it… flashed XPERIA S Walkman port + some other little add-ons which made my ROM complete…
Now somebody wrote here that you need to be very careful what you run on ICS ROM in order to be sure it can run smoothly enough… and this is so true…
When buying originally the phone (ARC S) it was supposed to serve me like a little computer machine while I’m away – Internet, mail, GPS, banking, photos, music, movies, YouTube, FB… etc, etc… it supposed to be very flexible and have enough power to do many things with many programs as possible… now with GB I noticed that I’m able to do many more things at once while lag-free then with ICS… I didn’t buy phone just to make calls and SMS – as many users tent to use their smartphones for… for me it have to do some rather heavy duty stuff…
Unfortunately ICS is very memory hungry and I noticed that with time after installing all favorite apps it starts to lag… you don’t notice till you have some reference like trying again GB with the some programs… don’t fall into adverts of different ROM makes that their ROMs are so great and fast – lag free and have so much RAM free – and blah blah… they flash fresh ROM, take few screenshots of fresh install with so much RAM free (zero apps running), then upload some clips on YT so you are amazed at the smoothness… BUT the real life starts after somebody installs their 10+ favorite apps and then can test the ROM in real life… and most of the time you realize that the difference between “before and after” is like night and day… ROM becomes unusable… or lags terribly.
I will be going back to my beloved ICS JJROM3.1 (after I finish the games I can’t on ICS) but I realize that it will never be as fast as GB… I just love the HOLO layout and look of ICS… I miss already some of the ICS options and functions, but the speed of GB is just amazing so I will stay on it to enjoy a bit longer… ha. I guess someone needs to find this “in between” ROM, where he can use as many of his apps as possible and still have reasonable speed left. I have running all GG services, FB Firendcaster, Forum app, weather, RSS reader, maps, Email etc etc and no lag whatsoever – games load fast and run perfectly without any glitches… while playing NOVA, DeadSpace, Shadow Guardian etc I still receive mail and forum/FB/RSS notices in the background and games don’t stop or even shatter for a moment, you don’t feel like there is any problem with having all this background services going on… well with ICS is a bit different, I can still run the some games (exept SG)… with this services, apps etc but it will take longer to load and while receiving notifications games shutter for few sec…
I found GB ROM called JellyBreadV2Arc which is modified version of stock GB which is super for my needs (has removed all FB bloatware + other tweaks) runs really fast…
Anyway – don’t know why I started all this… I guess the question to flash ICS or not is very hard to answer – if you want to try something new and are willing to sacrifice some gaming and a little speed then try it out… there is always way back…
One thing I noticed immediately with GB is battery life, is not as good as on ICS and charging takes longer on GB… which bugs me a bit… I know that with different kernel would improve but I don’t want to unlock BL… so needs to be that way.
ics it's no so bad, i really never used GB too much, but is said that it's better for battery life. I'm happy with ICS.
When I bought my Arc S LT18i, the ICS update was already available. I started using it with gingerbread but then, when I already had the apps I wanted, I decided to update my phone to ICS (4.1.A.0.562). Everything was ok until I booted my phone for the second time after the update. Couldn't unlock my sim and it just freezed. Had this problem for a month. I was so mad! I booted into safe mode, restored using PC Companion but the problem didn't go away. But then came the 2nd ICS update (4.1.B.0.431) and it just fixed things. The 3rd update (4.1.B.0.587) didn't bring any changes as far as I can see. But I still recommend you update to ICS. Or just flash CM9 stable.
Let's just not ask people, try it and see if you like it. Don't get me wrong but we can't help you as we all see ICS differently so you must try it out and see if it suits your everyday life. Also if you don't like it, you can always flash back to GB. Getting the root is simple enough and to find it, Google. Right now I suggest getting ICS because in my point of view, ICS is fast, sleek and beautiful.

Let me tell you now to get perfect ics. Once updated to ics, root using eroot toolkit n then install cwm using x-parts. Then go to cwm, flash odexed notification led fix, flash jb adreno drivers. Then boot phone. Now ul have a lot of smoothness and notification bug won't be there. U can then also install titanium backup n remove bloatware for even more speed. For the WiFi dropping problem, flash kernel of .13 firmware. Then ul have the ultimate ics experience. Sony's ics update is incomplete. Do all this n then it'll be a proper update!
Nice Review ,TNKS

clean Gingerbread vs CM9 rc5

Can anyone please name the advantages of CM9 installed on our phone?
Currently i use Bagux 1.4 and I've noticed these pros against cm9:
Better battery,
No connectivity problems,
Camera works faster..
CM9 r5
I bought my Galaxy W has 8 days and I am already using the CM9, not sorry ...
Advantages:
1- It is ICS so it has more features and options. CM gives even more customizations to Android
2- It looks way better than stock GB
3- There are many custom kernels!
4- It has more attention from the devs, GB has WAY less attentions now.......
5- The theme option in setting, this means that you can change the colours of the rom just by installing an app
6- You will be upgrading to a rom that has been made by Sir Arco..........Enough said!
Disadvantages:
No FMradio
CM9!
arco68 is very good at it ... CM9 makes! The samsung is so ***** that left us in 2.3.6, but for that there XDA developers! : D: D
Excuse my English, I'm Brazilian.

You can download Spirit Light, it's a FMRadio and it works greater than the original one for what I saw till now.. =)
i would say if you've used stock GB for a long time like me, you will find stock GB's interface to be more simple haha. But learning a new interface is never too hard so this is not much of a pro.
some even speculated that GB roms uses less battery than ICS/JB roms since well u know... GB has not much to offer xD! But I believe with more and more kernels developed within the ICS/JB frameworks, GB will also lose in the battery department.
So in conclusion, GB is outdated and should only be kept for preference purposes. (right now, I'm too lazy to migrate due to all the customization I have to redo and the ICS/JB rom still not finalized yet, yes I'm unreasonably demanding lol)
I've tried a lot of roms. Thought i will stick with CM9, but after experiencing wifi, data problems, battery drain, I've came back to GB Bagux rom, which runs smoothly for me and has no bugs or problems. I always change the interface with custom launchers, so looks of GB isnt an issue, since there is themes for its framework too. I think its better to have more free memory, than to run on the Edge of memory shortage like on CM9. And battery is definately better for example 1d16h on battery and 66% left. (didnt use phone much but still on cm9 it was 2-3% while deepsleep)
We can talk all day bout this topic. But in my opinion it really depends on what type of user you are.
In my case, i use camera a lot at work, i also use fm radio, and plays a lot of 3d games.
It's a mix feeling when you try those different roms. When i flashed CM10 i thought i was never gonna go back to GB.
JB brings new stuff, buttery smooth as they say, and it's the latest Android. But there are still bugs in the camera, and battery life isn't that good yet compared to GB. After using it for more than a month, i decided to try the latest GB update (2.3.6 dated December 2012).
I think i'm gonna stick with GB for the moment. Not until battery life is improved and those glitches in the camera are fixed.
To compensate the feeling of being outdated, i tried different launchers. I mean really different, like launcher 8 which totally mimics the windows phone interface. Looks can be easily achieved whether you are in GB or JB as there are plenty of launchers and customizations out there.
When it comes to performance, i managed to get the best of my current GB rom by carefully managing start ups and disabling apps which i do not really use. It plays all the 3d games i have with no lag at all. I do not overclock my phone, coz it will just eat up more battery.
Overall, i think my current setup is better and just what i need for daily use. It's quick, no bugs, reliable, and the battery can last 2 days with minimal use. So I'm satisfied and happy with it. For now..

if you want to try gb for gaming install the latest euro update XXLMI (december 2012). i think it performs better.
install "autostarts" from market and disable auto starting apps to save memory.
u may want to freeze system apps you don't use also with link2sd. this is what i did basically, without any other tweaks and i'm happy with the result.
same here ,,, im a big fan of link2sd apps,, i used to link all my apps to my 32gb class 10 mmc,,, so that my phone memory never gets full,, whenever new game comes,,,,

your issue really is not with a specific rom but with a specific game, what i can advise you is to try different set ups, different governors, try with andreno boosters, or maybe try with gaming mode with boost my xperia app, its really hard to advise a rom for you my friend since i think your main goal is to optimized a game which is NFS. but hopefully trying out my suggestions could help you
I'm using AuroraPlay and feeling satisfied with it. It's fast, lightweight and the performance is great. However, don't expect to run heavy games without lags. You can't force a 2-year old android phone to play modern heavy graphical games

Gaming on ICS ROMs

Hi guys, I have a problem playing games such as GTA III on my Xperia Play with any ICS ROM: everytime I launch the game, it freezes after a few seconds and I have to pull out the battery since the device stops responding.
Do you have this problem too ? Is it possible to solve it ? And...games aren't supposed to work better on newer versions of Android ? I know that ICS leaves less free RAM but there's are ICS ROMs like Krisdee's hybrid rom that leaves 200mb of free RAM like GB ROMs so I don't know what could be the problem...I've tried overclock to 1,6 GHz too, problem persists.

Not sure if you still have this problem but you should know that just because some android versions (ICS, JB etc) are newer, it doesn't necessarily make performance better. This will be the case when it comes to the Xperia Play, since this 2011 phone has never received an official upgrade to ICS (due to performance issues). When it comes to our phone, Gaming and Battery will always be better on Gingerbread since it is more battery friendly and less laggy performance wise.
If you want to stay on ICS then your best bet will be installing some mods such as Ice Cream Speed or PurePerformancesX however like i said if you're the gaming type then stay on GB for your phones full potential
Good luck

Asphalt 8 isn't compatible with the Xperia Play hardware so even if you have JB or ICS you can't even download the game from the Play Store it just says that the phone isn't compatible.
Anyways, I've tried it with a JB rom (downloading directly the apk+obb file) and the game installed succesfully but it was crashing during the loading before the first race so isn't playable.

I completely agree with you, it's a shame that an unique phone like the Xperia Play has such "ancient" hardware...

True... I hope they make a newer version with better hardware.
Still, I managed to run GTA San Andreas on Fusion ICS. You can use the buttons and analog touchpad with gamekeyboard.
Overclocked at 1.5 GHZ and swap of 512MB it won't crash. sometimes I get 30 fps, but most of the time I get a crappy 10 fps...
