Hello dear Xda members
I am planing to get a Note 2 tomorrow and I need your help to make a list of the most important things to check when buying a USED Note 2.
I have some ideas and I would like to have your suggestions
First of all, I need to check the screen, the body, and the back cover for scratches or cracks, and of course the camera lens (thanks hagba).
the stylus (most of time the presence of the stylus).
the charging port, the Sim slot and the memory slot (for cracks or something left inside).
then I turn it ON, and the first thing I need to do is to check whether it still has the old owner docs or not (most of time his pictures).
what firmware its running.
Rooted or not.
then I need to install some apps like the dead pixels test (it shows basic colors on full screen to spot a specific dead pixel and it color, I do have a bad experience with dead pixels as my last 7.7 tab has one and I didn't spot it when I purchased it).
*#0*# this code can be very useful to run tests of almost all components of the device, including vibrator, screen, drop test, light sensor... (thanks sanghaviraj)
Put a sim in it and start testing network, bluetooth, GPS, and WIFI if possible (thanks Bl!GhT)
Also I need to know how the stylus perform on the screen (whether its not responsive enough or not at all, or on a specific surface of the screen).
then the overall experience of the system and switching between apps.
battery life can't be measured during this test, so if the seller is honest, he can give me at least two days for testing the battery and other stuff that do not appear in the first time (but later, when you can't return it !)
thanks dr.ketan

yes ! for the GPS i can run GPS test and see what if it works but for network, I can only have GSM and maybe bluetooth but I can't test Wifi
Thanks for the hint !! I forgot about samsung codes
First thing I would do is check the camera quality,if it is not as good as your point & shoot camera quality, then just turn your back and walk away.
Thanks for the input, but I think that all what I can do is to check the lens of the camera, I can't compare the picture quality to anything because I don't know how good it should be on a working Note 2 :'( (the note 2 isn't lunched yet in my country)
i was going to start a new thread but then i found this one .i am very new to android OS (i am using nokia n900)
Someone is selling his Note2 and i cannot trust him nor he will give any money back guarantee.what else can i check.
i am running out of idea. i am nerves what to do to make myself assured that i am not going to be cheated. please give more tips
Thanks in advance

0xf1 is known and I think most of having it on note2, very few have other revision, but that also sure till no case seems to have sds on other chip, but it's really difficult to confirm that other is free from bug.
When samsung never speaks about it we can just guess from data on xda.

1. Have a look at the water damage indicator beneath the battery.
2. Check all the screws and see if they are not tampered.
3. Play some songs on full volume and see if you hear anything abnormal with the speakers, that is another way to indicate water damage.
4. Also there's an application called stability test from Google play store, run it for 10-20minutes and check to see any errors.

Of course there are some people who mentioned about manufacturing defects such as gaps between the bezel and the screen, bezel painted unevenly, loose volume buttons, home buttons not being flush with the rest of the display, light from the display leaking from in between the bezel and screen gap. Avoid one if you spot it with these traits.

I recently bought a new note 2, and everything was good and I love it!
But yesterday I was on the phone to a friend and initially I tried putting him on speaker phone, but the screen wouldn't turn on, only the soft touch keys at the bottom lit up. I thought nothing of it and continued my phone call.
It wasn't until he hung up I noticed i still coudn't the damn thing on. So i removed the battery and re inserted it. Here's where things get interesting though, now whenever i try to power it up, i get a little red light in my proximity sensor (i think) that flashes for about half a second.
I've tried soft rest, which does the same thing ( makes the proximity sensor light up for half a second)
Hard reset which does the same thing.
I haven't rooted the phone or anything. Luckily its still under manufacture warranty and I'll get samsung to have a look at it, but any thoughts on what it could be?

Well, I can tell the that the red light is normal, I get that too and its just because its booting up, when you turn your phone on, what happens exactly?
Thanks for the reply. When I press the power button, around a second later the red light blips for half a second and turns off, but the OS doesn't boot up and nothing happens.

Maybe you too.... Sorry that sucks.
This PSA was sent Flow style from my Note 2 N-7100
Now i am really getting worriyng about this, does note2 has started SDS ?
atleast 3-4 cases are reported with same symptoms.
Anyway can you tell
You were on which ROM when this happened?
Are you getting to reboot in recovery/download mod?
@dingokevin I had a read over the thread you linked, and I fear the worst has happened to my note 2. This seems like a serious issue and even a flaw with the motherboard perhaps? Thank the lord it is still under warranty. R.I.P old friend.
@dr.ketan Im not sure what SDS stands for... Yeah I was running stock touchwiz 4.1.1 I think. No modifications and no root what so ever, and nope :/ I tried holding down volume down key + home button + power but no cigar, just the proximity light flashes briefly.
SDS - sudden death syndrome
And if you are unable to get into download/recovery mode then nothing can be done except send it to service station. it highly suggests sudden death which is very known issue for SGS3.
Replying to your query at other thread, you will get motherboard replacement if it is under warranty.
Ahh thats probably whats happened then. Thanks guys, I'll send it off to samsung and have a word or two with them to see why this is happening to many people!
If possible share outcome here too.

I was just reading up on some possible causes here on XDA with peoples S3's and someone suggested corrupted NAND memory.. I think this maybe the case because before the phone call I had installed Gangster Rio (which i honestly did purchase off the play store, hand on heart) and after playing it for a while decided to un install it and get a refund. Could me doing this have caused the NAND memory to corrupt? The game is a pretty large file...

I highly doubt it was screen damage, imho. I only received the phone last friday and have been cradling it like a fragile little baby, Its never been out of my sight lool.
Maybe i just got really unlucky and ended up with a faulty device.
If screen fault then in such case usually you can hear boot up sound. It seems your case very well fits to sds category only.

Hi Guys,
Got up this morning having left my Note 2 turned on and on charge overnight to discover this same fault -
slow flashing Red light and phone totally dead.
Unable to do anything to rectify the situation.
Still under warranty of course, phone only released in October 2012.
Is this a fault with the phone which necessitates replacement or just a battery problem?
Would be grateful for any advice / guidance / help.
Thanks,
Mike Longley.

It seems also like SDS send it to Repair AFAIK is a chip problem, not battery so you can't do anything to repair it. If it is under warranty and with counter at 0 send it. They must repair it.

After purchasing your newly bought Galaxy Note 2, what are the things that you should check (and how to check for them) right away while it's still in it's replacement period? (e.g. dead pixel, known bugs, etc.) So if you find out that there's something wrong with it, you can have the unit replaced right away.
Just open the phone dialer and type *#0*# you will get a bunch of options to fully diagnose your phones internal hardware.

Correct.
hey
my phone has been acting weird for a while now.
the phone crashes a lot, some times it freezes while scrolling, some times it shuts down, some times it restarts on its own....
i tried to root the phone and flashed it with wanam, but it didn't stop crashing, then i flashed with omega v12, but the problem still continued...
shall i rule out that this might be a software issue?
what hardware part might be causing such behavior

That doesn't sound good...
IMO it's most likely a hardware issue.
It's hard to say which part is causing this. Maybe the storage?
I hope this aren't SDS symptoms.
That would mean that SDS would be still possible with 4.1.2

AFAIK if you had the SDS symptoms before the update, it is possible that you experience SDS after the 4.1.2 update.
I would backup all data, restore stock kernel/rom, unroot and return the phone for warranty.

use eMMC Brickbug to check using the memory test. In theory if it fails it is affected by SDS and your phone will die someday. If not it could be another problem. But as I said it is just "in theory", nothing 100% sure.

so, i got my phone back from the shop.( it is not the official Samsung retailer, just the shop that sold me the phone).
the guys said that they re-installed software and tried several kernels.
after a week of trials of reinstalling with no success, the guy called and said the phone is ready and working fine.
i got the phone and it worked fine for 5 min, then started acting crazy again.
i decided to root to see if i could get it going,
after several trials of rooting and un-rooting, and finally out of frustration, i knocked on the phone's back where the Mother board is located and re-rooted the phone.
suddenly the phone worked without freezing for the 5 days so far....
i am still monitoring the phone, but it seems that banging on the mother board had an effect on it (as weird and silly as it might seem)
i know that my phone fell a lot and that my son dropped it like a zillion times before it went acting crazy.....
i thought maybe something moved inside, and well, it seems i was correct (so far at least)...

Do you fancy hitting mine too?
Ive had this issue the past month, I have the insane chip aswell. Sent it off to Samsung as one day, it literally just made the screen go funny (multi colours, as if you pulled a cartridge out of the n64 or a Gameboy).
Samsung then took my warranty off, as they deemed it down to a small crack in my top right glass bit, which doesn't affect the phones use at all, as it was there for 3 months. They attempted to charge me £290 for a replacement logic board, and a new glass panel for the front, whish I think isn't fair as it wasn't the screen crack that caused the SDS on my phone.
Got mine back today, and the first thing I did was download all of the tools necessary to flash the ROM, only to find that I get a FAIL message in Odin, due to a missing PIT partition or something.
I now own a fancy paperweight, as I can only put this all down to a properly franked memory chip.
Owner of international Note 2.
This morning I found my phone dead. I cannot start it either through power button or other combination of buttons. I took out the battery and back in. Through ADB no luck it doesn't even register that I plugged in the phone.
From time to time the first led on the right of the camera blinks (I think it's one of the sensors).
Can anyone through an idea what I can do to recover my phone?

have you rooted your phone ? .. can you go to recovery ? download mode ?
My phone was rooted. I had MIUI on it. I was on the same ROM for 2 weeks, so it can't be the ROM. I cannot access the phone in any way possible
Unfortunately looks like its SDS ( sudden death syndrome ) . Was your phone on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 firmware? Its supposed that 4.1.2 has sds fix. Anyway if its sds so only option is to replace motherboard.

Unfortunately looks like its SDS ( sudden death syndrome ) . Was your phone on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 firmware? Its supposed that 4.1.2 has sds fix. Anyway if its sds so only option is to replace motherboard.

Agree with T511.. One of my frns S3 also had SDS n like he mentioned, motherboard had to be changed... if you have warranty n bill they will do it free.. doesnt matter if its rooted.. they cant check either..
It seems so. I've read for the last hour about it. What i don't know is: if i go to service, will they detect i was rooted and on custom rom? If so... can they refuse my service completely (After all SDS is not ROM related) or at least they can service me but with charges (which i presume it will be allot, but after all less then a new phone)?

Even they cant access it pal.. so they wont come to know.. just take it to service.. they will surely do it free if its under warranty..
but your data cant be revived.. hope you had a backup of contacts and msgs.. (5 mins'm waiting to post this .. as i've just started postin after a decent learning)
I had everything on my card. Titanium Backup few days ago....so i won't lose anything important. I just hope that the service will do it without arguing. I am under contract to Vodafone since november 2012. But in my country service or service period are words which are still foreign to distributors or sellers in general
Dear all,
I am in deep trouble , my phone was working fine yesterday night but some how today in the morning when I was trying to switch it on the phone wont respond no startup logo nothing I tried to remove the battery/ sim/ memory card but still nothing happening I tried to plug the phone to laptop but it is not responding even I connected my phone with the charger no signs is it really charging or not, but still I tried to charge the phone for atleast 7-8 hours , only thing which I am getting is the red identification light keeps blinking when I try to switch on the phone , otherwise phone seems to be completely dead.
I am rooted & I have jelly bean 4.1.1, any help in this regard will be appreciated ... because I already have void the warranty by rooting although I have set the binary counter to zero through triangle away app.
thank you very much.
I think that your phone have SDS. But in your case i would check battery and charger - if that wont help just send it to warranty (if this is SDS its hard to check that you have root
I must say you should flash ur note2

thanks for the reply, I have tried 3-4 different chargers but no work for my phone for battery I have to check it, I heard that same crazy stuff were happening with SG-S3 but I is not the case with note 2, SDS means they have to replace some hardware components will it going to effect my data in phone also.
thanks again.

Dear member, thanks for the advise but it is not possible as my phone is not detectable by PC, so flashing is not possible until you tell me some other way.
If download mode not work in my opinion there is no way to bring it to life at home. Only replace motherboard can help.
Yes the same bug is in SGS3 (same eMMC chip on board). This is happening on 16 GB variant of sgs3 and note2. To avoid this next time use android 4.1.2 (Samsung propably fix this, - risk of SDS on newest roms are lower).
Try to check voltage on battery.

Have you ever flashed it before.. if not then you can claim warranty
If you have flashed it once or more the counter will raise and samsung might be a b*tch about it and charge you for it (like they did with me)
The thing you should not do at all if its the SDS is flash it because it will not write NAND and will always fail then

My first Note 2 died exactly this way....unrepairable and not covered under warranty due to glass being cracked.... On my second one now at MY expense

Hi guys,
The update is my mother board was effected & replaced also, I lost all my data from sd card, board is replaced by service center at their cost as it was in the warranty so luckyly rooting my device did not make any issue, they have installed the latest firmware jelly bean 4.1.2 which they told me will make sure not to happen again
