Friend gave me a new S2 today, never been turned on or activated. Didn't ask any questions.
So my question is, should I unlock it? Is unlocking it free?
Whats the easiest method to root the phone with?
What kernel & rom would you suggest using?
P.S. I'm not going to be using this as a 'phone' I'll be using it more for entertainment purposes like gaming and videos & such, looking for a rom with the most amount of free ram & internal memory available.
Thanks.
p.s. It's a boost mobile phone, SPH - D710, Samsung Galaxy S2
yes you can use it for free if your mot using it as a phone. As for the rom, I like CM10 or PARANOID ANDROID.

Before you start playing around with it make sure you are up to date on how to safely flash with this.
Learn which kernels are safe - I use Agat63's repacks but there are other options.
There's a sticky on top of the General forum that has the rundown.
And this phone cannot be "unlocked" as there isn't a SIM for it.
You can flash it over to other CDMA carriers if you want - I'm guessing it is a Sprint phone flashed over to Boost. Boost just got it so I can't imagine someone plunking $500 and just giving it away.

Yes, u just need to download the USB drivers and Odin to your PC, boot into download mode vol- & power, and flash a rooted rom, or kernel+recovery. If you go the kernel/recovery only route you'll need to flash su.zip and subin.zip thru recovery to gain root. Alternatively you can download a rooted Odin one-click package and run it from your PC while in download mode to gain root. No-data versions retain user data the others wipe and install clean. When using regular Odin your files go in the PDA slot and uncheck f-reset

Same thing, first it was the Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4g Touch then sprint dropped the branding back to Samsung Galaxy S2. Just make sure you only flash things labeled as Sprint Galaxy S2, Epic 4g Touch, SPH-D710, e4gt don't flash anything for any other variant unless you like fancy looking door stops

Ok so quick re cap, Odin roots my phone, putting my phone in download mode allows me to flash a kernel & rom, the bootloader is unlocked but I'll still have to pay if I want it flashed to another CDMA network, correct?
Download mode is for using Odin, boot to download then connect to PC via USB. U flash .tar files thru Odin PDA slot, you can either flash a full rooted tar or just a kernel/recovery, the recovery is packed into the kernel on this device so it changes when the kernel or rom is changed. If you want to flash aosp/cm based roms I highly recommend using el26+cwm5 from chris41g so u don't brick. Flashing to other carriers you can either pay someone to do or do yourself with a little reading and software downloads, your options are boost(if its a sprint version if not its ready for boost) pageplus, virgin mobile, cricket or ting depending on what's in your area that works good. Check out the stickies in general, q&a and development and get familiar with tools and terms before starting so you don't run into an issue mid way thru rooting/romming

Sweet thanks, I actually put this phone on craigslist hoping someone would trade me something. It's appears to be a cool phone but I already have 2 xperia plays. Worst comes to worst I'll end up keeping it for entertainment purposes, I'd like to connect it to my TV and play Mario Kart 64 with the sixaxis controller app - considering the xperia play doesn't support TV connectivity or whatever the technical term is...

well my phone arrives friday. i'm coming from the evo which i have rooted running cyanogen mod. i've been reading the forums alot and one thing i keep seeing that i'm clueless about is ODIN ? i've never seen this term used in android hacking before.
a few questions
best and easiest way to gain full root? recommendations for a custom rom? it doesn't look like you can run cyanogenmod on this?
odin is progam for you pc (if you have mac you use something else check dev forum) odin allows you to flash modems and .tar files while in download mode on your e4gt, easiest way to root your phone is through odin took less than 5 - 7 minutes

The modem is separate.
Sent from the future.
I just want to add, be very careful about what you flash and make sure there is a way to go back to a full stock phone (modem, kernel, and ROM) before you do anything. Many of us who upgraded to the EG31 modem are sitting in limbo right now because there is no way to go back to the stock EG30 modem.
Don't wanna hijack this thread but don't wanna start a new one, ill be getting this phone soon and I've been reading around and have a question.
What exactly is a modem? What's it do ands how does changing it benefit us?
I'm familiar with rooting and kernels and rom's and all that jazz but I have a hero so I have no clue about modems.

im new to the term modem too, and ive asked the same question. i have been told the modem is also known as the radio and that this is how the device picks up the network signal. i cannot confirm this is 100% accurate but this is only what i was told when i asked the same question

I was one of those people that fell into this category. As it turned out I had 1 day left to return my phone so I returned it for another one. Now I am content to wait on the official update and give the dev's a chance to catch up. My advice wait it out, its not like this phone is a pig outta the box........just my .02.
Hello Guys,
I picked up the phone from Telus on Friday then rooted and flashed CWM the same day.
Because the rep gave me a protective case and put it on right away, I didn't notice that the power button is wobbly and recessed into the frame.
I will be going tomorrow to replace my phone (hopefully) and was wondering if I can restore my current ROM unto the other device.
Did doing backup via CWM backup all my apps as well?
Can I restore a ROM unto an identical device (will have the same SIM)?
I was told I will be given a replacement in-store. Do you guys reckon I should flash back stock ROM (running CM10 atm) + recovery before going in there with the phone? The guys in the stores are generally clueless and I can tell them that the different look is an app. But nonethelss, how would I go about flashing stock recovery?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for directing me to that thread, it answered my questions.
I've been looking for info about Sprints latest stock ROM but according to most of the info I've found I should still be on JRN84D but I'm on JRO03U. Since the update I lost my root but the boot loader is still unlocked. I've also lost Touchwiz but sounds like I need to go the CWM route anyhow.
Most of the stuff I find on here seems to be referencing Toroplus so I don't want to start adding a recovery that is incompatable or bricking it trying to root with the wrong files. I've also read many times that using the VZW files is a big no no but they are the only ones supporting my build. So any links or info where I can find the info I need would be greatly appreciated. Whats a boy to do?
This is the info you should have with latest rom

You lost touchwiz? This isn't a mainstream galaxy phone....
Sent From My Toro+ via White Tapatalk
^^ Yea no Galaxy Nexus variants come with Touchwiz at all. I vaguely remember reading about an effort to bring it over but if I remember correctly it was pretty buggy. So unless you're running that specific custom ROM (and you would definitely know if you were), you never had Touchwiz on this phone.
Definitely don't download any Verizon ROMs or radios. That could brick you. You want "toroplus" builds. That's the sprint variant.
Maybe it wasn't touchwiz. Trying to remember but it was an alternate recovery to CWM that utilized the touchscreen. At any rate I'm back to the stock recovery that is completely useless giving me a droid with a red danger triangle above it.
gagb1967, that is exactly what my build version is. Thats why I'm hesitant to use any of the toroplus files because I know its a mysid build. I've been spending way too much time with my desktop and overclocking because I've forgotten most things about how to mess with my phone. Then again this GNex really doesn't need NEARLY as much alterations as the old Charge and Touch Pro 2 did LOL.

That's the stock recovery. It's not meant to offer you the same functionality as a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM.

What did you use to root it? The Sprint ROMs should work since it is a brother of the sprint model with a few tweeks for strait talk. But with the GS2 from strait talk that was a ATT type phone you still had to use a different recovery to get it to work but you could use any of the ROMs..... so any info on how you flashed Slimbean would be great, thanks
I'm also wondering if the sprint s3 options in the galaxy toolkit are ok to use on sch-s960l...I read that the camera may not function...also I WILL donate to anyone one who can provide step by step, comprehendable instructions to root and flash slim bean with no issues.

This post should work. (QBKing77's video here) All I did was copy SuperUser zip file to the phone, ODIN'd ClockworkMod to the phone, rebooted to CWM, flashed the SuperUser, rebooted and it was rooted. Really not much to it, seemed too easy to me, but it stuck, didn't lose root after reboot.
I did notice some wonky data issues once I flashed SlimBean. My first post was edited to show that it pretty much locked onto whatever tower I was closest to at the time of the flash, so when I was driving around, once I lost connectivity to that tower, I had no data. Still could call but no data. Had to reflash SlimBean to connect to the next tower, but again, lost it since I was still driving around. Back to rooted Stock now.
Lately I've been trying to install CM 10 but they have a check to see if your phone's build.prop file has the SPH-L710 value in it (ro.phonecode or something), and obviously since we don't have sprint phones, ours says SCH-S960L. I edited the build.prop file and put the sprint code in there, but then it said the ro.bootloader value was incorrect. That line isn't even in the StraightTalk's build.prop so I added it, but it still didn't want to flash.
Next step is to edit the ROM itself and remove those checks. Kinda skeptical about that, since they're there for a reason. But, for the sake of research/advancement of mankind, I'm gonna try it anyway.

You can edit the assert prop in the updater script of any d2spr rom. I personally use root browser from the rom toolbox from jrummy. Extract the rom, then go to META-INF>com>google>android>updater script. Open the script as an editable text document. You will see the ro.bootloader lines. Simply take out those lines, or modify them for your specific bootloader. If you downloaded the official update when you activated your phone, it will more than likely be S960LWYAMD6. Save it, then simply rezip everything, and flash. That's it. Just remember it's probably not a good idea to try this with any rom that includes bootloader or modem updates. But you SHOULD be fine with anything cyanogen-based. It's worked flawlessly for me but all phones are different, so use cation and always flash at your own risk.... Well, hope this helps some people out there. I've been having this same issue for a while and couldn't find anything that helped, until I got bored one day and just started messing around with random stuff. Haha. Happy flashing
I just need to root this damn phone...
I simply want to root my SCH-S960L. That seems to be way too much to ask on XDA...
Stock Recovery
Hey guys!
Just wondering what my options are for getting the upcoming update to Android 4.3. I have a rooted SCH-S960L on the stock rom with CWM recovery (Touch version) 6.x....I was told that I would need the stock recovery installed in order to install the upcoming 4.3 OTA, but how do I do this? Where can I get the recovery.tar for use w/ODIN to reinstall the stock recovery? If I use KIES to reinstall the factory firmware will this also reinstall the stock recovery? Could I use the Sprint L710 stock recovery.tar since this is essentially the same phone? What should I do?

I've read on that Straight Talk doesn't update their phones at all. So what is on it is what will stay on it unless there are custom roms for them. Which I am currently looking for. The topic I read it in mentioned a gingerbread phone that was never updated despite the same phone on other carriers being updated. The ST Customer Service forum had a post saying check their Terms and Conditions(which not sure what that had to do with updating their phone).
https://github.com/Shabbypenguin/an...mmit/b131f82f667433af4d8895d55f00bfc8a2a1c94f
ask your favorite rom devs to add this to their d2spr device trees. it will make it so that there wont be any more need to edit updater scripts, i already sent this info to carbon rom d2spr dev. if/when he merges you guys will be able to use carbon rom without editing anything, just flash in recovery
edit: seems CM will be the first http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/54652/ starting nov 27th you can download sprint d2spr builds and with a sprint based recovery they will flahs just fine for you guys.
Straight Talk does update their phones. The S3 was updated by Straight Talk not long after Sprint updated their S3 to 4.1.2.

how did you root the sch s960l I have this phone and I want to root it bad. I emailed customer service at straight talk and they told me they would not be updating the phone to 4.3
They also said that the phone woukd be stuck on ICS also...
As for rooting use SKUNKAPE1's guide on here for rooting the Sprint S3. The only addition to his step-by-step is to install STERRICSON's version of BusyBox once you finish up with the TeamEpic root.
Will tell you though that most of the Sprint S3 roms will not be fully functional on this phone however...everything usually works except the cammera/gallery app. Xposed framework mods do work very well however.

1. Since the Galaxy S III became available as a Boost variant, there’s been an increasing amount of questions, issues, and requests for builds. I have collaborated with the powers that be, and it was determined that it might be a good idea to start a Boost only thread. This thread is dedicated to anything and everything Boost Galaxy S III related.
2. I will update and bump and sticky and edit and whatever else needs to be done the best that I can, but it is open and available to all. This is YOUR thread, just as much as it is mine. I encourage folks to ask questions, post relevant links, tutorials, helpful hints, and anything else they come across while tinkering with their new phone that may help others related to the Boost S3.
3. First and foremost, as always is the disclaimer. We are all responsible for our own actions. I am not responsible for what you do to your phone, so please do not flame me or anyone else in this thread if you do something that potentially fries your device.
4. If you post a link to something flashable, either through Odin, CWM, Heimdall, TWRP, etc, please test it on your own phone first or have someone test it before you do so. If it works, and will benefit someone, feel free to include it. I will most likely PM the dev and ask to put it in the OP.
5. And finally, please be courteous and respectful. We are all here to learn from one another, and do not need sarcasm, unkindness, flaming, or disrespect, of any kind. Thank you and enjoy.
Stock Unrooted OTA Odin Tar
This is the official, stock, right out of the box, Boost MD7. This will unroot your device, and take everything back to the way it was when you got it. Please thank the OP, Smith058, over at AF (link to OP at the bottom), since he was so gracious to let me post it here, and to let me use it to cook up something good for you folks More to come on that one! The only issue I’ve noticed on this build is there’s no boot up sound. But it flashed modem, stock recovery, put the device status back to “normal” and made the “custom” in Odin mode back to “official.” This should come in handy if you need to send it back for repair, or just want to start anew. The coming zip (once it’s uploaded) has working sound.

8. Reinsert battery, boot up, and profit

The only issue I’ve noticed on this build is there’s no boot up sound. The coming zip (once it’s uploaded) has working sound.

My phone is running a rooted version of the stock MG2 ROM. While it has the Boost startup splash "4G" screen, I don't think there ever was a sound component.
Also - If I recall correctly, some custom ROMs labelled as compatible with the Sprint Galaxy S3 will cause us to LOSE 4G SERVICE, because they do not have the Boost-specific APN settings in them, and changing APN settings on Jellybean ROMs is (apparently) not possible as it was on Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs. So beware, and make sure that any ROMs that you want to flash will not kill your 4G!

I think it was an issue with the Tar, because when I built the flashable zips, they not only had the Boost animation, but the sound component as well. And I have seen around that some Sprint ROMs will cause issues with 4g. I know that it is possible to get into change the "guts" of your phone if you have your MSL by with JB Touchwiz ROMs by dialing ##3282# from your phone's dialer. However, for some reason, with the zip I just built, it's not cooperating. I'm going to swap out secphone.apk later today, from another stock build, and see if that fixes the issue. But thanks for the heads up. That's what this thread is all about.

If you flashed the rooted one, chances are it won't let you update, but give it a try. Additionally, if you have custom recovery, which you had to in order to flash the zip, it most likely won't let you update it either. It's an Android Software update, not a firmware. I would try it, and I'm sure it will fail, but at least you won't get prompted anymore for software updates But yes, it is safe to try.

jdsingle76 is correct. It won't hurt anything, it just won't work. If you accept the update, your phone will reboot into recovery, process for a few seconds, and fail with an error. However in my experience, that will not stop the software update prompts from re-occurring. If I recall, the best way to stop them was to use something like Titanium Backup and freeze something having to do with 'OTACERTS'. It's been a while, so my info may be out-of-date on that front.
can someone please reupload the stock SPH-L710 odin tar file else where before I brick my phone accidentally, its not letting me use recovery. The root method i used did not work correctly, now my phone is now working properly and i just want to get back to stock to try a different method for rooting, i need this odin file please!

Good to see ya bro. Thanks for throwing that up there. Just noticed the dropbox link was broken for too much traffic. I have the MG2 tar from Kies as well. This weekend if I get time I'll throw both of them in AFH and/or dev-host. Hope all's well, thanks for helping out!

Guys, i know this post is a little bit old, but i was wondering if I could flash this file with the Sprint Version (same one, SPH-L710) I know this will not harm my phone but I just want to make sure. is it safe?

What file from this op are you referring to? But to answer your question, yes, you can flash ant sprint file to the boost variant, and vice versa, you just might have to change apn, mmsc, stuff like that, to get mms to work.

I have not gotten my hands on a 4.3 Odin tar yet. If you do remember it'll have Knox, and I think Knox is here to stay. Ice heard rumors about Kit Kat for this phone but nothing's come out yet. Thanks for the support!

Thank you Jdsingle76, Boost Mobile are doing a hell of a job there keeping the 4.3 Odin tar under their sleeves.
Are your enjoying my build

Don't fret. .. If kitkat comes out there will definitely be a custom rom made with it that you will be able to flash. With root you will have many more options than you ever will with stock.
