S pen detection when attached - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

What does this do?
How come the haptic feedback only works when it feels like it?

I believe it turns off the wacom pen layer when the S-pen is in the holder. This should save some battery

How come the feedback doesnt work all the time with the pen? Possibly a bug?
Nvm when plugged in the charger there is no feedback

just to back this up - that's exactly what it does; its best to leave pen detection on if that's your only stylus, however if you happen to be using a full size wacom stylus, it'll only work when the pen is detached... got me confused the time i tried to use my lenovo and slate pens and they wouldnt work... because the feature was on...

S Pen work with S3?

Does the Note's S Pen work with the Galaxy S3?
Nope, s-pen is an active digitizer. There isn't the same tech/hardware in the g3 as there is in the note
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Go on eBay and search Galaxy S3 stylist, and you can get one that works for the S3. The price range is $. 99 to $29.99. They have some almost identical to the Notes S pen, for one just like that you are looking at around $29.99

There is nothing for the S3 that will be comparable to the S-pen on the note. The C-pen is decent, but it's not going to be as precise, or responsive as the S-pen.

The c pen is definitely more accurate than the ball stylus pens due to the slim tip so you can actually see where you are writing. The only problem with the c pen is that it will occasionally not register as touching the screen.
I bought one because I take a lot of notes using S memo and I had an extra $20 bucks laying around lol. So if you can spare the cash I would reccomend it over the ball stylus pens but just know that it will only work for the s 3
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Either that or i'd just get an Adonit Jot stylus....
I just use one of the ones that have a rubber ball at the end.
C-pen didn't work out for me, because it's design a little bit fat. I guess, that's the only way to have stylus is to buy Galaxy Note Series . And also they have wacom grid, which can sense pressure.
good info

C pen is so expensive. How little are you really gonna be clicking? S3 doesn't have the special touch screen built in like the note so the pen gets bigger or smaller from how hard you press anyway. Any cheap stylus will work great. I got a laser, flashlight, chrome pen, and stylus in one for like 6 bucks at Monoprice. Works better than I dreamed.

At least now I can give a mini review. It works great as a pen and I use it whenever I have to sign something. Stylus tip still works fine and always has no problem with responsiveness. Only thing that sucks is the flashlight and laser died fast. It's all chrome and black so it still looks nice, but I have no idea how to put a new battery in. I even called and asked them, but how they said to do it was still impossible.

S pen issue

So whenever I try and use the s pen it sucks. If I hover over anything it acts like i selected it. I just want to know is there a way to disable this. I don't want the s pen to do anything unless I actually touch the screen with it.

I believe that's the Airview feature of the S-Pen which you can disable from the S-Pen option settings.
It's a known problem.
Some people have taken the pen apart. Rather, i just slammed the pen on a hard surface a few times.

Best troubleshooting for your S Pen
Thanks this method worked for me too!!! Gave it two gentle slams on the table and was good to go. LMAO!! I called samsung to report the issue and they had no way of helping me out, I will call them back and have them implement this technique into their troubleshooting steps.
S Pen Issue
Having a problem, wondering if its just me.. When i go to use S Note, the pen is automatically set to the eraser, and if i select the brush mode, its still using the eraser. I can only write if i press and hold the button on the s pen, then bring it close to the screen.. and then its like an etch a sketch where my lines would all be connected.. As soon as I take the s pen away from the screen and go to write again, its back on the eraser! any help would be greatly appreciated..- Matt
That's not how it's supposed to work. Maybe you have a defective device? Either way I would bring it back to T-Mobile to get it checked out. Are you running a custom rom?

Mine was hover selecting too but updated to the latest OTA, still had the issue. So I disabled and re-abled Air View and my problems were fixed. All has been good for a few days.
Yeah, it was working before but now its just all screwy, im waiting for my buddy who also has the Note 2 for tmo to come by im going to try his pen. This way I can figure out if its the pen or the phone. Thank you for letting me know that this isnt how its supposed to work!

Pen input pressure

Does your guys pen require more pressure to operate compared to the note 2? On my note 2 I barely had to touch the screen, but the note 3's pen requires much harder pressure before it starts working. I even tested the note 2's pen on the N3's screen and it worked just fine. So it's gotta be the pen. Does anyone else have this experience or is my pen defective?

There's an option in settings to increase the sensitivity, see if that helps.

Try replacing the tip. The bag that comes with the device has two types of replacements. Clear and rubberized. Change be tip to a clear one. Worked for me!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe on the Note 2 you could adjust the sensitivity on the pen itself somehow. I never needed to adjust anything so I'm not sure. I assume the note 3 would be the same way.
Edit: Yeah here's the thread on how to do it.

New to note 2...s pen help

I just got a used note 2 and from who I got it from he said that the screen was broke and he had replaced it but whenever I try to use the s pen certain areas of the screen the stylus won't write on. Its either not accurate or scribbles to the left or right of where I'm writing at. Since I'm new to the s pen and the note 2 touchscreen I figured I would get on here and ask to see what it could be. I'm thinking maybe the digitizer but I didn't know if its built into the screen replacement or if its built into the the actual LCD panel. Any help or comments are appreciated.

It may be the spen itself.....my first note 2 the spen wasn't working properly either.....search Google for "note 2 spen calibration" there is a button on the pen and under it is two little screw like things that calibrate the pen....If that doesn't work then maybe new spen or might have to get a new phone...sorry

I tried the recalibrating and resetting solutions and it didnt work. I also bought a new s pen and still didnt work and when i tried to recalibrate it there wasnt anything to change like my first one. it just looked like a small circuit board with a button on it and thats all. Im guessing its a problem with the digitizer itself but since it works just fine with my finger ill leave it be for a while. just a shame i cant use the s pen for more precise doodling lol

Same here...I've done a little research and I'm not quite sure which part I need. I see a sensor board replacement that's pretty cheap, a glass/digitizer replacement that's also pretty cheap or all that plus a LCD panel that's crazy expensive. So I guess my question is would u just replace the glass/ digitizer or sensor board or both since my LCD panel seems to be in perfect condition. I have the spen with eraser and I can confirm that it's slightly off centered.
I filled the tip down to have it more precision.

Filling the tip down will do absolutely nothing. Don't believe me? Get yoru spen out, press it into your finger and then slide that same finger over the screen (finger nail touching the screen). The pen will still write. It's the depression and location of the pen, not the "tip"

There is another thread here where several users found that filing down the other end of the nib (not the bit that touches the screen) brought the pen closer to the screen. When the S Pen is vertical this makes no difference and all the alternative pens seem to work fine. However, when the pen is held at an angle, the slightly different length means the digitiser registers the location of the tip offset from where it really is.
It's true that it doesn't matter where the actual tip touches the screen but it does matter where the electronics in the pen are in relation to the tip.

According to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484014 thread, none of the 3rd party styli really works properly. Only the genuine Note 10.1 2014 Edition seems to work without an offset.
You may not care about a 1mm difference between where the tip of the stylus is and the point where the touch registers, but it would drive me mad.
