Hi all,
I got my Desire yesterday. It is a gorgeous device, but has one fatal flaw. The POP/IMAP manual e-mail setup in HTC mail is not working.
Gmail or Hotmail work fine - there is no need for a manual setup, the phone does it for you.
But Yahoo, or any other custom mail does not work. When setting up the incoming and outgoing mail server, the phone gets stuck at the incoming mail server setting and doesn't advance to the outgoing server setting as it should.
After you set up the incoming mail server you hit next and the phone checks online and a popup says "Verifying account settings". After this is done, I believe it should advance to outgoing server settings, but it doesn't and gets stuck at the incoming server settings screen...
This is a very fatal mistake and problem - one of the main functions of a smartphone not working...
Can you guys see if it works for you - maybe its only my unit that is faulty?

I got it set it up on my University IMAP fine, I had this issue but just had to change the security type to TSL.
Unfortunately that doesn't work for me...
It is very weird, as the same settings worked with K-9 mail app without any issues...
I got the same issue so I use K-9 Mail instead (which I prefer since it seems to push my emails faster)
I can't get it to sign in to gmail. I have a @googlemail account, and it just fails to verify account information every time. All other mail accounts, Hotmail and proper POP3, work fine.
That's cause you use the Gmail app for Googlemail, not the normal mail app

I prefer to use the HTC mail widget. Anyway, I got the thing going now, by connecting via imap instead.
I'm in touch with HTC customer service and we're trying to figure out what is wrong. I'll set up a test account for them so that they can test it and see why the e-mail is not being set-up. Will update later...
i set up gmail as an exchange server.. Only done it half hour ago but it should be push now
I'm also having this same issue. (Trying to use SSL.)
Anyone manage to made Yahoo Mail wotking on IMAP? I have an YahooPlus account and I can connect using a WM device, but no chance with Desire [using the same settings as in WN device]. On Desire, it stuck on first step - setting of incoming IMAP mail server, saying each time "wrong username/pw"....
Same issue for me

Not IMAP but with POP3, yep. Works flawlessly.

Has anyone sorted this out ? I've having the same issue with the imap setup on my desire. Very frustrating after shelling out for this thing.
Cheers
Have you tried using the stock Android mail app which can be found here:
http://rhedgehog.com/apk/email.apk
I prefer this to the HTC Sense mail app and its much more flexible/configurable during the set-up phase, I had problems with my Uni account swapped to this and no problems since then using IMAP, POP and SMTP
I also have difficulties getting IMAP+SSL to work with the HTC mail application.
I suspect it has something to do with the certificate. The server I'm trying to connect to doesn't have a verified certificate, and you don't get prompted to accept the certificate, as you do if you use the K-9 mail app.

I had same kind of problems with Hero after upgrading to android 2.1.
Problem seems to be related to setup procedure. It is not able to prompt certificate acceptance dialog. But if you setup account with address that is not existing or where is not imaps service running it will say that it can't verify account but you are able to continue. After creating account launch mail application, go to settings and put real server name. At this point it will prompt certificate acceptance dialog and after that it is working.
I of course had the same trouble on my Aria but managed to get it working by following these instructions:
first open mail.
enter manual setup.
INCOMING:
as for settings:
protocol: Imap
Email: [email protected]
user name: youraccount
password: your password
IMAP server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
security type: none
server port:143
OUTGOING:
login required is checked
user name: youraccount
password: your password
SMTP server: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
security type: none
server port: 587
NOTE: if it still wont let you set up incoming server, try first entering in a non-existent server. such as imap.mail.yahoo.commm or something. it will give you an error message but hit continue. NOT OK! from there set up outgoing correctly.
then exit.
then launch mail app and select that account. click menu-more-settings-account settings and enter the correct server address.
hopefully this works for you guys as it did for me.
--Edit--
forgot to add, if possible, make sure wifi is off.
also, I have discovered that htc mail wont log in unless you are SIGNED OUT of your yahoo account everywhere else. i had my laptop automatically loading yahoo's web pasge and i guess it was messing it up. so sign out of yahoo mail before closing your browser.
hope this helps.
sent my yahoo and my talktalk account up on my phone..fine!
HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to do this on my WiFi as it would not connect over 3G...
Hi,
I'm having some problems with default Mail application of Android under HTC Desire for sending mails through my personal mail server.
I host my own mail server with SMTP Authentication but *only* with Android Mail application it seems to ignore username/password I provided under the account settings so no authenticated session is done on the mail server and this one reject the client because of this. SASL Authentication is properly working with other clients (Windows mobile pocket outlook, Thunderbird 2 or 3, Outlook ...etc)
Do you have such other similar experience/problem with SMTP Auth within Android 2.1 please ?
Thanks by advance,
laurent
Hi, i'm having the same problem using the corporate SMTP server (which works for everyone else). Might be a bug on the email app?

hi !
thks for your reply, now i know that i'm not alone
I was afraid of this ... it could be a bug
I searched on Google about this problem but found no interesting entry anywhere about it like if nobody saw it ?!
Do you know if there is a sort of BugZilla for android OS please ? Maybe we could find an entry there or at least enter a new one if necessary ...

Hi, the email application belongs to the Sense, so HTC should fix it. The stock Android email app works (tested on a Samsung phone with the same SMTP server) but is not available on Desire.

Ok, thks for this information, sorry I was thinking this one was the default mail application from Android
so we have nothing to do other than waiting and cross our fingers that HTC release a fix asap ...
if you want the default android one, i ffound it on a post here somewhere....cant find it now though, but you can download it from http://rhedgehog.com/apk/email.apk
If someone can upload it to rapidshare or something (no access here at work) it'd be cool.
Edit: Oh by the way, have no issues with my server. Auth turned on, standard SMTP, SSL off. no idea what software my host is running on the server though.....
hi,
thks for your reply !
do u mean smtp auth is working properly for you ? if so can you give me firmware version of your htc desire please ?
thks

SMTP Auth is working fine for me with SSL, I use Runbox premium mail service.
I am running software version 1.15.405.4
1.15.110.11
Hi again,
Thks all for your informations, I also have 1.15.405.4 and so did some new tests with SSL enabled/selected this time and SMTP Auth is now working !
If I go back and disable SSL, I have no logs on my Postfix server-side about SMTP Auth and client is purely rejected.
By the way, for my curiosity I tried with the Android default Email application rhedgehog provided (thks) and with this one SMTP Auth is working with SSL selected or not ...
So, as a workaround, I finally kept SSL on but did not find yet the last word of this problem !?
@alebolic : maybe you should try with SSL on ...

I have a Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S on t Mobile. I have no pop3/smtp issues on all platforms and devices including my Blackberry 8520, 9700, and Pearl. I have two POP3/SMTP accounts that I need email to send and reviece from constantly allday. Sinc eI bought my Android phone I have had nothing but issues on both the defaul internal client and with apps like K9 for example.
Whether I am rooted or not, fresh reboot or after it has been on or idle, smtp always fails a few days after adding account and POP3 works occasionally. I have tested full and as needed syncing, other SSL ports and etc other than the recomnmended and still pop3 is sporatic and SMTP fails frequesntly a few days after thet account are created in the phone. I had zero issues on my Blackberry, I just dont understand why these phones are giving so many people issues.
?? I am begining to wonder if everyones issue is a task killer killing an app that is needed and it is not opening when needed?
?? Is there a underliying push to make people use Gmail and apps instead of the phone?
It must be a base system issue because POP3/SMTP apps behave the same way. As everyone knows Gmail works fine always. My Yahoo! Mail app works perfect as well.
WA: I just use bookmarks I placed on my Home screen to access my mail via browser.
Not sure if it is relevant, I use a service called authsmtp for all my outgoings, and it is a little irritating when being set up on Android HTC Desire froyo. The first time it tries the access and says the host isn't responding, if you then say you have ssl it then produces a checkbox saying login required and you can enter a username/passw combo. After that it works.....
Seems like the requirement to let it know you have secure access isn't geared to the first attempt to set up.

Same problem here.
The HTC Desire Z mailclient does not support SMTP Auth with my mail server.
I checked on my mailserver to find the problem, but the phone does not try auth
at all.
Server says "220 ... ESMTP Sendmail.."
Phone sends "EHLO [..ip..]"
Server answers
"
250....
...
250-AUTH DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5
...
"
Phone sends "QUIT"
The Phone shows "server does not support authentication".
BTW: this phone is the only client I tested with this bug. Working clients are: Thunderbird, iPhone, iPad, aso
It seems HTC mail does not support the provided Auth methods. If anyone of you has a working setup, could you please tell me which mailserver it is or tell me what auth method
would work ?
Have you tried authsmtp as I mentioned? They were aware of the original problem I had and they may well be able to fix the Z issue.

While configuring the mail account, it verifies account information which means account settings are correct but after clicking "finish setup" button in the last screen I receive "failed to create the account. Please try again later" error. Our company runs Exchange 2010. Our admin sent me a couple of certificates to install on the phone but it didn't solve the problem.
Can anybody offer a solution?
Thanks.

There's a known issue w/Hotmail sync if you're using corporate sync/active sync setup. MS changed the sync setup on their server and it broke sync on all kinds of phones...that might be what is affecting you.
This is one of the key threads on MS forum about it:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-devices/e8a68843-02f9-4fe3-957b-233b21179fc5
Results can vary - it was working on some phones for some accounts, not on others. It started working again on my wife's Razr Maxx when she got her 4.0.4 update, it always worked fine on my GNex.
on ICS and JB, when i add a hotmail, it added as exchange. dont know why, but it automatic setup with it.

Well, from ACCOUNT SETUP> I input my email and password and hit on NEXT and after that > Could'nt open connection to server! tried hundred of times but no way!
Does that mean i cannot set HOTMAIL on my device? If so which Application can i use with which i can set HOTMAIL as my default e-mail for sending mails?
I have 3 setup on my phone...
Just add a corporate account and use your full email address as the Username and use m.hotmail.com as the server address
And how do i do that? I cannot seem to pass the stage for email and password input? Is it POP, IMAP or EXCHANGE? And i have never use any.Only used to setting simple email and thats all

Well, I have the solution when I upgraded
to 4.0.4. I can now set up the email. Thanks
Microsoft are launching their new outlook.com service today.
I got carried away and stupidly converted my hotmail.com account to outlook.com account.
Now I can't sync my phone with the new outlook.com service. (I can login with but it doesn't sync)
Worse, I stupidly deleted my hotmail.com account on phone trying to sync with the new outlook account.
Now all my hotmail based contacts on htc one x is gone, and I am not even sure if I will get it back even if I can sync to this new outlook account. Have no idea how it HTC sense store the phone contact data on hotmail.
One other thing, I am in China at the moment.(i can access to outlook.com without VPN)
Anyone got any solution or insight?

Try setting up an ActiveSync account for it in the stock e-mail app. Here's a link to the instructions. It's for WM and iPhone but the settings are the same.

I was able to configure the new Outlook.com with the settings that I posted here...
gizmocanada.com/2012/08/outlook-com-and-the-htc-one-x-samsung-galaxy-siii-or-asus-transformer-pad-infinity/
I used snt-m.hotmail.com for server address
The documentation also mentions m.outlook.com for the server. Didn't test it yet.
Envoyé depuis mon HTC One X avec Tapatalk
I switched to the Outlook.com site, but I've left my address as @hotmail.com so no issues for me (other than the website not working in Chrome).
Hi
I switched as well before I knew what I was doing
I could get Exchange Active Sync working again by removing it and adding back using my new outlook.com email address.
The instructions are to use m.outlook.com, this connects but fails to validate credentials, perhaps it takes a while to move over. Using m.hotmail.com authenticates okay but sync'ing doesn't work, the same problem a lot of us have had for a couple of months. Using snt-m.hotmail.com and it is syncing again.
Interestingly using the emulator running 4.0.4, then m.hotmail.com works fine from there, so pointing to the issue that the HTC One X Exchange app isn't working with the redirect correctly, hence needing to short circuit in my case to snt-m.hotmail.com. Using m.outlook.com doesn't work from the emulator either, fails with invalid username/password.
Regards
Phil
Hi, I tried the snt-m.hotmail.com but I still can't get mine to sync too! Always gives me an error in syncing (the red sync icon). When I tried to connect my hotmail on my bro's android 2.3 HTC Rhyme.. Everything works!
Do you guys have other ways to solve this problem?
I've installed hotmail app, it syncs all..
But I'm not able to create new contact on ur phone in hotmail.
Even I'm.waiting for outlook sync in the mean while
