Hotmail email setup - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Dear members,
I deleted my hotmail email and wants to create another but when I input my email and password ( and I am sure they are correct), I have this error message " can't connect to server" and I have strong internet connection, what do I do? Thanks.

Are you trying to add it as a POP account or as an exchange account?

There's a known issue w/Hotmail sync if you're using corporate sync/active sync setup. MS changed the sync setup on their server and it broke sync on all kinds of phones...that might be what is affecting you.
This is one of the key threads on MS forum about it:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-devices/e8a68843-02f9-4fe3-957b-233b21179fc5
Results can vary - it was working on some phones for some accounts, not on others. It started working again on my wife's Razr Maxx when she got her 4.0.4 update, it always worked fine on my GNex.

on ICS and JB, when i add a hotmail, it added as exchange. dont know why, but it automatic setup with it.

Well, from ACCOUNT SETUP> I input my email and password and hit on NEXT and after that > Could'nt open connection to server! tried hundred of times but no way!
Does that mean i cannot set HOTMAIL on my device? If so which Application can i use with which i can set HOTMAIL as my default e-mail for sending mails?

I have 3 setup on my phone...
Just add a corporate account and use your full email address as the Username and use m.hotmail.com as the server address

And how do i do that? I cannot seem to pass the stage for email and password input? Is it POP, IMAP or EXCHANGE? And i have never use any.Only used to setting simple email and thats all

Gmail Exchange ActiveSync - Same as IMAP?

After trying various email options with my Desire, using Exchange ActiveSync protocol between Gmail and the standard mail app seems the best of several poor options. It isn't working quite as I expected though. It seems to be similar to IMAP in the way it displays the correct emails in various folders as a copy of what's in gmail on the web. However, it only copies folder contents that I've changed by other means (PC or webmail). If I move, create or delete emails using the mail app, that isn't then reflected in my account in the web.
Is this just the way it is supposed to be or should it work the same as IMAP, and if so, why isn't it? Any suggestions appreciated.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I use exchange with the HTC Mail application with my Google account as well. When I move or delete messages, they get deleted on gmail.com in 2-3 seconds.
Maybe something is wrong with your configuration, you sure you have it on push? Mail app -> Settings -> Send/Receive -> Push

Thanks for replying. I'm glad it works ok for you, as it gives me some hope.
Yes I do have it set to push. I also have the domain set to Google and my username set as my email address, and SSL is on.
Are you in the UK? I am, and my email address is therefore googlemail rather than gmail, so I'm wondering if my login details should be also. I'll give that a go now and see if it makes any difference.
[Edit] I've tried changing the domain of my username to gmail instead of googlemail, but it wouldn't create the account. So I'm stuck with what else to try.
Well somehow it now works fine. The only difference is that my email address (not my username) now has the gmail domain and not googlemail. I had to re-create the account to change the settings, so either there was something wrong that resolved itself when I did that, or the difference in the email address makes a difference.
Hopefully that may help someone else.
Well now it isn't working again. Is nobody else having problems with their Desire and Google Exchange?
Here are my settings, and as I said works perfectly on my unbranded desire.
Email address: *******@gmail.com
Server address: m.google.com
Domain: google.com
username: *******gmail.com
CHECKED - This server requires SSL
In my account sync settings I'm syncing MAIL + Calendar.
Just for the record, I'm not using a task killer, which could possibly interfere?

It gave me an error when I tried to set my username to @gmail - Probably because I'm in the UK where Googlemail is used rather than gmail. Although if you wrote to me using @gmail, I'd still get it. So it's all a bit confusing. Besides, it did all work yesterday. I don't have the domain set the same as you, I just have "google" as I read elsewhere that was correct, even though that alone isn't actually a domain.
I wish I could edit these settings without deleting then re-creating the account, but there doesn't seem to be a way to. I'll do that again though to match your settings, if it lets me.
I'm not using a task killer by the way.
Tried using my Googlemaill account and says it can't do it - bit annoying but I'm happy with the gmail app tbh, just thought I'd try it out!

If you use @gmail as your username, it'll probably 'half' work. Mine is back up but it still isn't working properly. I'm not sure if it's better than using the Google mail app or not now, as I've gone between that and the mail app and K-9 so many times now, I forget what was wrong with each one. LOL. I think one of the major issues with the Gmail app is lack of copy/paste.
I rarely send email, I just have it to receive and then use my PC to get any attachments if needed...I'll stick with it for now!
I've found something similar. If I delete an e-mail on Webmail or IMAP (using Windows Live Mail) it doesn't disappear on the HTC Mail App (using Gmail Exchange ActiveSync). I have to delete it manually again. I've started a thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676890
Which is odd as both the native Gmail App and IMAP (using the same HTC Mail App) do.

You can, just go to "More" and then "Settings" in the HTC Mail App or click on Exchange in "Accounts and Sync". You can change it all there, except for the domain (oddly that seems to be only available when you first create the account). Which incidentally, Google say you should leave it blank:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
This is the Windows Mobile instructions but Google intend you use this feature primarily on Windows Mobile handhelds.

Is anyone able to setup Hotmail with Exchange Activesync on the Arc?

As much as I try I seem to be failing miserably. Tried by just opening Native email app and by going to home, settings, Accounts & Sync, Add Account, Exchange ActiveSync and am trying:
email & password, Next.
Domain left blank
username = email addy
password,
server = m.hotmail.com
both SSL boxes ticked,
but I keep getting:
Setup could not finish
Cannot connect to server.
Im going out of my mind now!
Actually a friend of mine was trying that with his Arc but no success.. seems working fine with POP3 for some reason ... wish I could help
I am having the same problem...
That's interesting, has anybody actually had any success connecting to any exchange activesync server using the arc? I only have access to hotmail's exchange, but this works fine on touchdown, just not the native app...

I'm connected to my University's exchange server (hosted on the Hotmail cloud) and it works fine. Make sure to use your full email address for your username.

as for Exchange, I don't know - because I don't use it.
I have just tweeted se. Will have to see what they come back with.
Just set up a hotmail account too. Works without a hitch.
I want to set hotmail up with PUSH email... not PULL(POP3) which way I can set it up...
I use enhanced email apply and exchange (push) and footprint set up fine.
Wish it had more ram or a way to permanently kill tasks until required.

I'm using the default mail client to connect to my corporate exchange server via activesync. No problems at all. Exchange Server 2003 though. Don't have 2007 or higher to test on.

It does. Microsoft started supporting it a little while ago. Only seems to work with mobile phones atm, ie android, apple etc. It doesnt seem to work with outlook without that hotmail connector.
This is what I received back from SE earlier this morning.
'@Gavilaaar To set this up, you would need to contact Hotmail to obtain the correct server settings you require.'
Anyone wanna laugh with me???
Is that possible to sync Hotmail Calendar with Arc?

Why? They're right... It's not SE's job to set you up with Hotmail.
Did you look elsewhere online?
Microsoft adds Hotmail ActiveSync support for iPad, iPhone but not yet Android
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft...port-for-ipad-iphone-but-not-yet-android/7251
So AFAIK it's not yet officially supported by MS, but you can give it a shot.
My school email server runs on the hotmail cloud (I can access it via hotmail.com) and it works.
But basic hotmail doesn't.
FYI... A quick google search found many threads recommending "better mail client" (free on the market) for this task. Seems to work.
This too:

To be fair, I did have a major bounce around the web after I tweeted SE and found the same information as you.
What I was asking them was why hotmail wasn't working with the stock email client but working with others. And that was the reply.

Can't set up Gmail through exchange

I'm new to the world of pure Android. My previous devices have been HTC sense devices.
Normally I set my Gmail accounts through exchange/active sync because I also have multiple exchange accounts and prefer using a combined inbox. On my evo, all I had to do was enter my address and password and that was it .That doesn't work with this phone. I've tried multiple settings with no luck.
Has anyone had success with this?

Try This
Domain\Username:
\<your_username> do not include @....
Password:
<password>
Server:
<Fully Qualified Domain Name for Exchange Server> (ex. exchange.mydomain.com)
Check the box for Use secure connection (SSL)
Try not to check "Accept all SSL certificates" if that doesn't work then try it with it checked.
NOTE: If you Exchange Server is using a self-signed certificate then you may need to request that your IT gets a trusted CA certificate.
Exchange-Server for GMail is: m.google.com
Username and Password are your webmail credentials.
Use SSL.
Have either of you had success with those settings? I've tried those a dozen times, each time it says cannot open connection to server.

Please Clarify
Do you have a company exchange email that you pull your gmail accounts into? Can you clarify further? How do you normally get your exchange email? Through outlook client or outlook web access? Provide as much info without displaying server names/ private info please. Yes I used those setting exactly as I describe and may GNex connects to my company email just fine.
I have 6 email accounts, two are through Microsoft outlook. I can access those fine through the stock email app. My 4 other email accounts are with Gmail. I prefer to set those up through the stock email app instead of the Gmail app because I like the combined view feature. To be clear, I can set up those Gmail accounts to only poll the accounts. I'm looking to use Gmail through exchange for the push feature. This worked fine on my HTC devices. Not so much on this device.

Just tested these settings and they worked:
Added new Account.
Accounttype: Microsoft Exchange
First Step:
[email protected]
mypassword
NEXT
Second Step:
Domain-/Username:
\myemail (without @gmail.com)
mypassword
Server: m.google.com
Use SSL: ON
Accept all SSL Certificates: OFF
NEXT
DONE.
Worked like a charm.
BTW: If you just need the combined inbox, it is already there.
You don't have to use the GMail app.
Just open the E-Mail app, and tap on the top, on your exchange account.
You then can choose between all your e-mail accounts, even the gmail, or choose "combined view".
Still not working. I've uploaded pics of my setup and the error I get.

Any Tips?
Can't find Certificate
I'm just setting up the Eclipse ROM, everything EXCEPT the Contacts are syncing properly.
When I attempt to add a contact, and NOT store it locally, it tells me I must set up the exchange, which explains why it's not syncing them in the first place.
I followed all the previous suggestions to the letter......mainly: SERVER: m.gmail.com
Upon hitting "Next", where others are reporting success, it is telling me:
Can't connect to server? When I did get a server connection (?)....It told me that there was no certificate found on the SD.
I realize the Noob aspects of the question, and apologize....I do normally have a pretty good sense on the Android system, but don't have any background w/ exchange services...SO I appreciate any input.
THANKS AGAIN.....Spyder
I've just figured it out to setup gmail as exhange email. Put "ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM" without quote at domain
First Step:
[email protected]
mypassword
NEXT
Second Step:
Domain-/Username:
ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM\myemail (with @gmail.com)
mypassword
Server: m.google.com
Use SSL: ON

Use the Hotmail app instead then, this support push notifications.
I use and would recommend "Touch down for smart phones" it is almost instant push notifications and seems to work very well i have been using it for 18 months now. The other option is to set up your hotmail to forward masks to your gmail account, this also works well.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to sort it out (with help from wnp_79). I downloaded the stock Android app and set up my account. The emails are pushed to the handset now.
Nae bother. So you can download the stock app from the Market? I'm guessing its just called Mail? It would be better to have that working than Mail and Hotmail both trying to sync, for battery life.
No the app is not on the market.

Ok, what specific email service are you trying to setup (GMail, YMail, etc.).
What is the name of the server that you are trying to connect to? For example, the ActiveSync server for GMail is m.google.com.
Lets start with that and see where we go from there.

GMail. That's how it worked since the day I got the phone, but now it isn't working. It's obviously a different Note 2 (the old one was having a problem, so service center provided me a new one), but that shouldn't be any reason.
I just type my username, then password, select Manual setup, tap on MS Exchange ActiveSync, then I tap on next and that error pops up! The server address is m.google.com like you said. But I've tried with different address like m.gmail.com, no luck!
Now I had a Nandroid backup from my old Note 2, which I was restoring some minutes back with Nandroid Manager, and when I restored the email and Exchange service the old email data is back, as Exchange ActiveSync.
This is the most weird thing I've seen since a long time!

Yep read at least 6-7 articles about it. What a stupidity by Google! http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/14/...-sync-exchange-support-for-gmail-calendar-and
Anyway, that was it for me, created a Hotmail account and a Live account as well (love the name, Live, lol) and Exchange ActiveSync created the account easy.
Now I guess there is no way I can have all my messages transferred to the Hotmail account from the Gmail account right, and have the new emails in Hotmail instead of Gmail? I have to manually edit the email id everywhere from Gmail to Hotmail or is there any trick?
Yes, This is good way and I am also doing same since long. I have yahoo account and forwarding Gmail to yahoo always.
I don't think you need to change ID everywhere, just use both ID atleast for now, may be there will be some solution for Gmail comes.
