End of life ideas for dinc2 - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

So, I got my new phone. Yay.
Now I have this old dinc, gonna root, but who has some good ideas for putting this thing to good non phone use?
Thanks!

Dedicated music player comes to mind. I don't know

I agree with naut. Get you a theme able custom ROM and pimp the hell out that mp3inc. Throw on some Pandora, some games, and a few good camera apps.

I like That. I have aspirations (no motivation) to be a themer and a dedicated device to test on sounds great.

You could just send it to me! Haha, some people use it as a VOIP phone in there house. I think an app like GrooveIP will give you that option.

Personally I like having a second phone to quickly and easily show off something cool on the new phone via video. I had a d2g that had a bad esn (I thought I could use it in Europe, but was locked out there too) and I used it a lot for that.
Also I use it when going abroad, as it will work in Europe and the states.
Also, I love using my old phones as alarm clocks. You'd be amazed how many days an old BB Curve will last with all the radios turned off. I'm guessing a Dinc2 would be good that way too.

Two questions. Could it be a GPS without a data connection?
Also, does anyone know of an app that makes your phone networked attached storage and / or plug it into a hard drive and act as an interface for NAS?

I know GPS will work without data, but if you need to pull up directions for navigation, you need to be on WiFi to download the coordinates. After that if you don't make it re-route it will work. As for the 2nd question.....idk

really on all these ideas. I still have my Eris (though the trackball still scrolls left) as an emergency backup, mp3/Pandora player for in-house and garage (anywhere WiFi reaches), and white noise machine for sleeping baby.
Sometimes wish it didn't have that trackball issue so I could use it more efficiantly, so a fully operational DInc2 laying around would be an awesome thing to have.
What did you end up getting?

Thanks for the advice. I also like the idea of an experimental unit, now that I do not rely on the device daily, I can check out the jellybean rom and try out google now

I remember I used to get the eris trackball to start working by putting a piece of clean white paper on a table and rolling the trackball over it in a rolling motion. Always did the trick

Yea, I used up all the paper in the house. It only lasts for a short while now, but it does work for a little (usually). I even replaced the trackball with a blackberry one. I was thinking about trying just caking the area around the trackball/circuit board with JB weld to prevent flex which I think is causing the intermittent contact issue caused by the location of the charging port in relation to the trackball.
Ah well, either way it is extra and it wont be the end of the workl if I destroy it!
Yay for extras!

I'll be using mine as a paranormal investigation tool. I have a few apps that actually work, unlike ghost radar.

htc/Verizon asks that you place your inc2 on end of barrel of a 12 gauge, insert 3in slug, make it rain incredible flakes. now your inc2 has been officially updated by Verizon

Like someone else mentioned, the phone could be used as a VOIP home phone. All it requires is a Google Voice account and an app called GrooveIP (there's a free version, but the $5 full-featured version is definitely worth the money in my opinion). I also take it with me when I travel, since most airports and lots of hotels offer free WiFi, which allows me to make as many phone calls as I like without running up my minutes. I've been using my Inc2 for this purpose for awhile now, and it's very nice to have. I keep the phone in a dock and also use it for streaming music when I'm home as well as for my alarm clock. Just because the phone isn't activated on a wireless plan shouldn't mean that it can't serve a purpose.
Only other piece of advice; I would steer clear of ICS/JB based Roms if using it as a VOIP phone. I had nothing but trouble with the audio settings on GrooveIP. But the stock Rom, or any GB-based Rom should work fine. I use MROM (which is CM7 based) and it works exactly as expected.

[Q] Finding a Lost Phone...

I know there are several apps on the market that will help you find a lost phone. The wife really needs one and I'd appreciate suggestions. I am somewhat concerned about potential security issues and whether these apps require GPS to be left on all the time.
Tks
Personally I use lookout, but they also have an app that can be used even if your phone is already lost called plan b

Not that I really want to prolong this convo. But I'm kind of interested on what you expected it to do? I'm not a huge fan of it. Its a nifty thing. But I believe the verdict is out on what it does. And it does do what it is made to do. So where did it fall short?
my best use: what is the weather in (insert location). works like a charm, and what time is it. lol.

Screen record / multi window / screen record rant

All missing. Really? I will donate to whoever fixes that lameness.
/Rant over
edit....sigh...typo
second screen record was supposed to be Google wallet
But....you already donated to Samsung...
All kidding aside, shoehorning this into the OS that I don't believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) has been officially released (kernel and all) yet will be an ugly endeavor.
I applaud the ROM cooks for their hard work, and agree. I've done my share of donations to the Evo3D gurus, and will continue to for the future the Note2 wizards. I really doubt we'll see these features, at least seamlessly as we'd like, prior to Samsung releasing them.
While I can honestly say I'm disappointed for the same reasons, along with the fact that inductive charging on the Sprint models has been made almost impossible. (I've recently learned you may be able to physically mod the phone)
I also must admit, over all, this is the single best smart phone I've had, the only other phone I've been this excited about was the Palm Pre when it was first released (zomg true [email protected]#)
So, /rant signed, added to, and amended with a pat on the back to Samsung for delivering an awesome phone on it's own standing even with flaws. :good:
Palm pre. I'm a die hard palm lover.
I was on treocentral and pre central most of my days.

Screen record will probably need to be a hack as some rumors are going around about a patent in the US vs. Europe.
Why Multi-App view is not working is unknown.
Google Wallet is dependent on Sprint allowing it, from what I hear.
Inductive charging has something to do with the outside case contacts with the internal battery contacts. the hardware my be causing this limitation although there is a rumor of a hardware hack for this going around as well.

I try to integrate my phone into my life as much as possible. Calendars, alarm clock, email, bill paying, password keeper, cloud storage, shopping, etc. I agree - why spend all the money on a smartphone and not use it to its fullest potential. Everything you listed seems like what I do with mine. To further see the fullest potential of the phone, I recently rooted it and have flashed 2 - 3 ROMs over the past few weeks. I am really enjoying it. I have never had a rooted phone before, let alone done any rooting myself. This is a first for me. :good:
I recently bought a nice denon audio receiver. (Avr 1713) it has a network connection, and I can control it via Wi-Fi anywhere in the house. I can even stream Pandora and have full control through my phone. Pretty sweet.

Definitely want to upgrade the receiver and speakers. I've been doing a ton of research and ended up with this combo. I got the speakers half off on Newegg during some 2 day deal they had.
Receiver
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1K50FJ7174
I got the receiver as an open box item at Best buy for $315!!! It retails for $450.
Pioneer SPC21 (center)

Pioneer SPFS51 (L & R)

Pioneer SPBS21 $100 (rears)

The receiver is amazing though. Comes with a program called audyssey that uses a mic and several positions to automatically setup each speaker based on your room. The android app (AVR-remote) is free and gives you complete control over the entire system (ie bass, treble, speaker output, sub, etc) I happened to find all these parts for a grand total of $520. Should of retailed for $850. I already have a sweet sub, so didn't have to buy one.

I agree power locks alone aren't enough if there simply isn't a way to REMOTELY use them.. My 94 civic doesn't have a remote but then again. I (nearly) never leave anything of value in it anyway for this reason. Even without remote, a hammer can do the job. I don't want to tempt anyone to begin with.
