Hi,
I got a Galaxy Nexus GSM with Wind mobile on a $40/month plan, which will pay off the phone in 3 years. They said that they don't have any kind of extended warranty for the hardware, in spite the fact that there is only 1 year manufacturer warranty.
So then what would happen if the phone has hardware troubles after one year? Does other brands have a better policy regarding hardware warranty?
Return it, cancel contract, buy a new phone directly from Google with no contract.

You can buy a 3rd party insurance plan but that's your only option. They cover it for 1 year and that's it. Any issue after that isn't covered by the manufacturer or carrier.
1 year manufacturers warranty is completely standard for most OEMs.

Except Google doesn't sell directly to Canada...
And the Google Play Store GNex has the same "issue". It has a 1 year manufacturers warranty.
At least he wouldn't be locked into a contract and have to buy a new one if it breaks.

I don't get your logic. After 1 year, with either phone, if it breaks he has to buy a new one at full price... They have the same warranty.
But again, Google doesn't sell the Galaxy Nexus in Canada.

WindMobile won't accept you return the phone aftr 14 days or after 30 minutes talk time had been used. Il I cancel the contract, I must pay off the remaining of the phone. Let's imagine the phone is broken after 1.5 years (18 months). With WindMobile Canada, I must pay close to $400 - 18 x $4 =$328 if I break the contract. And that on top of the $100 I paid upfront when signing the 3Y contract. They say no contract on their ads but actually their system works exactly like a 3Y contract.
Never try buying phone upfront + going without contract. May be I should try this in the future. Even if I buy from Google, do I have an option with extended warranty? If not then then that the same problem.
If it breaks you wouldn't have to break your contract, you'd just have to find a phone new or used somewhere, and pop in your sim card.
Sounds like you kinda got screwed though, $100 with a 3 year contract? I paid $35 for mine on Bell, and I get a new phone every 2 years.

Well Google doesn't sell to Canada so....
But anyway, even if they did, they don't offer an extended warranty. You get the same 1 year manufacturer's, and then you can buy 3rd party insurance if you want.

Yeah, I just had my mom get it free on Verizon with a 2 year contract. That's the more expensive 32gb lte version as well.

Thanks for the tip. I never looked at Bell as I used to hear that the big 3 are ripoffs. I am one Day1 with Wind, largely within the limits to cancel. I have checked Bell offers and got a Live chat with a Rep. They cannot even match the $38 plan that I was having with Fido (just cancelled today, paid $100 early termination fee for the remaning 9 months). Fortunately Wind has a promotion, the Galaxy Nexus is free with $40 plan.
In anyway, it's way off topic here. The post is about hardware warranty so let's not discuss about phone plans.

Add a stand alone policy to auto or renters insurance and then put a contents addition that covers property away from home for half the price of carrier and get a check for full replacement cost to buy what you want instead of a refurbished one.

I probably would have gotten it but this time around after they raised it to $11 I purchased best buy protection. I know it doesn't cover loss or theft but it's no deductible and unlimited claims plus they give you a loaner if you need it. But for those who don't have that option it's a good idea to get it at least for the first year.

I have heard bad things about best buy insurance. I haven't personally tried them to say it's bad.
I have Sprint insurance for a about 7 years now.... And they are pretty good with replacements. The deductible sucks but they are quick with sending a refurbished phone or if you are lucky, a new phone.

It's hit and miss. I had bb insurance years back and never had any issues. For the past 5 years I've had Sprint insurance but after the last experience at my local Sprint repair center I called it quits. Decided to try bb again. When I had bb several years ago it took them 3 days to get me a phone which is average for Sprint also. It all depends on the situation I guess. It's always good to have a loaner available.

I used to work for the geeksquad helping implement and coming up with new software for them to fix computers. BB their return policy and their phone insurance is 2nd to none. it may take like 3 days to get a replacement but they were always quality refurbs and you could break one every day (every few days) if the refurbs aren't to your liking you just complain to a store manager and they will give you a new one lol. Just to test it and fufil my dreams of spiking an iphone on the ground I did that using their phone insurance and than the next week returned the refurb. The people that work there have 0 clue about anything lol.
Furthermore I hate bestbuy and the geeksquad horrible place redundant processes. SO i am not trying to say they are good by any stretch of the imagination they just have a poor system and people with foresight can work it to their advantage. lol
my opinion

I can vouch. I didn't work for sprint but have many horrible experiences. Only thing good about it is you'll get your phone pretty quick, only problem is most refurbished phones are done by companies that aren't too good at doing it.

i dropped tep for the 2 reasons most others did. they bumped up the mothly payment to 11 bucks and the deductible to 200 dollars. thats $264 in premiums over the 2 year contract plus the 200 dollar deductible makes it 464 dollars if you have to replace your phone once. i assure you that you can buy a used note 2 for the same price online at swappa or craigslist and the such.
i went best buy black tie this time and paid upfront. 169 for 2 years with no deductibles.

they give you a 50 dollar gift card on top of whatever the current trade in value is. its free when you prepay for the bb insurance.
Before someone says 'search', you should know that the search function isn't working on XDA right now.
I was browsing SquareTrade's website and came across the fact that they have a specific page for Samsung Galaxy devices. It seems that those warranties are cheaper than the regular smartphone warranties. http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
It's only $99 down and $99 deductible. That seems like a good deal, since it covers accidental as well as water and mechanical.
Has anyone used SquareTrade before? Was it worth it, and what was the process for getting a replacement like?

that is the same deal you get if you go through amazon for squaretrade. I was going to get it, but it does not cover lost/stolen which is what I am worried about more than dropping and breaking it
When I found out that Jump through t-mobile came with insurance I just jumped on that. - no pun intended. A lot of people use squaretrade - including costco and a friend of mine has no problems. Search them on Amazon and read their reviews...they have good reviews.
Is 99 for a two year insurance plan?
does anyone know if squaretrade covers phones that have been rooted/software modified? like, does the phone have to still have it's original manufacturer's warranty intact or does that not matter here? will they force you to try to use the samsung warranty first, or does their warranty just work in lieu of the samsung one?

Yes, that's for two years, which seems to be a really good deal for me. When I want to sell my phone next year (when the next Note comes out), a warranty will be a big selling point.

I think that is something that manufacturers do more than 3rd party warranty providers. I don't think SquareTrade cares if you root your phone. It might come into play if something happens like you brick your phone and ask for a replacement, but i'm not sure. I'll have to google it and see if anyone has said anything about that possibly being a problem.

Honestly, I've never broken/lost/damaged my phone in any way that it would need to be replaced. So I hope that one time would be all I would need. And even one time would save my $500+ to repurchase the phone.
I'm glad they give you 30 days from the date of purchase to get the warranty, cause I am all tapped out right now just from buying the phone itself.

for as many sales as Negri gets...i doubt there would be a big issue with their extended warranty

Yeah, I had originally looked at them. They just changed their insurance provider and the terms. Before, it was a higher price and deductible, but you got a new phone when you made a claim. Now, with the lower price and deductible, you have to send the phone off to be repaired. I'm just not sure about the new insurer. SquareTrade has been around for a while and I know that they are decent, so I may go with them.

I'm pretty sure that SquareTrade requires a receipt or invoice of some kind as proof of a newly purchased phone in order to get a warranty. The warranty itself is transferable if you later sell the phone, but to get a new one I think you need the proof of purchase.

Make sure you log into your account with them and then look at your MyPlans to make sure they say they have all they need.
I've been a T-Mobile customer for 9 years and enjoy trading phones, recently I traded to an S4, my S4 was traded from my brother who bought the phone from a T-Mobile corporate store 3 months prior and the store manager to me it was told it is perfectly OK to trade phones. About a month ago the S4 charging port stopped working and I was given a warranty replacement by customer care with no hassles. Well today I was contacted by T-Mobile executive responce team saying it was against T-Mobile policy to trade phones and is not allowed and that they never received my S4 with the broken charging port even thought I got the text saying it was received. I was called a lier and that I was manipulating there warranty. She said that I never sent the phone. 5 minutes later she verified T-Mobile received the phone. Now T-Mobile said I cannot trade phones or file any warranty claims because I manipulated the warranty...can they do this??? Help

I don't see how you can keep a warranty when you trade phones with somebody outside of your plan.
Within the plan they shouldn't hassle you.
Outside the plan?? well who's to say the previous owner purchased the insurance/warranty?
I work retail. Automotive at Firestone. If you sell your car to someone else we can't repair the work we did to YOUR car for free. Unless it's family.
It just makes sense to warranty what YOU purchased. Not anyone else. Granted trading phones of equal value doesn't really look like it'd make a difference but they don't know that.
This is why 99% of the retail stores ask for the original receipt and your drivers license. The ID and the card/receipt should match up. It is labeled on every receipt.

I think what happened was you traded your phone, then used your warranty to cover a phone you did not pay for. Thats the way they are looking at it.They see it as you took another device, then used the warranty that originally came with your device to get the traded device replaced.
What would have been easier was to have your brother file the warranty claim then he would be getting warranty on a device he originally paid for, then give the new device back to you.
As stated above, when the device leaves the original plan it was purchased under, the warranty is now void. This is why i don't buy new phones off craigslist of ebay.

You can't buy a hammer drill at a pawn shop and get it replaced by factory. Warranties are on a original purchaser basis only.
If they weren't I'd be buying broken Craigslist phones all day for 100 and having them replaced and making 150 more than I paid for it when reselling.

Just wondering for the people who purchased the accidental damage/extended warranty plan. I purchased the 2 year ESP solely for "warranty" purposes and not for Accidental Damage purposes (even though it comes with accidental damage).
For people who got the extended plan; Is anyone going to seek a refund now that the Pixel 2 and the XL variant come with a 2 year warranty from the start?
Hate to break it to you but if you have to use the extended warranty plan even if it's for a phone defect you'll have to pay the deductible (Google sends you to deal with Assurant). With Google's factory warranty you don't pay anything for a warranty replacement.
Yeah...doesn't seem right. It's extended coverage?
So it's good for 1 year past the factory warranty. We're good for 3 years then.

Looks like Google clarified this, so it may be a little better for those with extended care. So, no deductible unless it's accidental damage.
"We also want to add some clarification on the 2 year warranty and preferred care.
If you already purchased your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL from the Google Store or an authorized retailer, your warranty will be extended to 2 years.
The length of the preferred care program remains the same. If you have a mechanical breakdown issue in the second year, you will no longer have to pay a deductible. Accidental damage is still subject to a deductible. If you bought Preferred Care and want a refund you can get a full refund on your purchase of preferred care for up to 30 days, or a pro-rated refund anytime after that." http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/1...xel-2-xl-units-two-year-warranties-worldwide/

Yes exactly. I think some people thought that the preferred care/protect warranty didn't include a deductible if you used it for mechanical breakdowns but you do have to pay it. So by Google extending their warranty it benefits those that bought the extended coverage at well.

Good to know.
I may just keep the protection, but haven't decided yet. I like how the phone is IP67 resistant. I go kayaking on a lake sometime and get some splashes here and there. Always had to keep previous cell phones in ziplocked tight bags, but I do not plan to with this one. In case something happens during kayaking, would definitely be a claim
Also, It definitely is a lot cheaper than Verizon protection plan. Comes out to 5 and change a month over a course of 2 years? Not bad at all. Verizon would be almost double that
