Hi everyone.
I had my SGN2 in blocking mode since yesterday and today at lunch I noticed I didn't have my S-Pen on the phone... Now I don't know where it is!
I don't remember when was the exact last time I used it.
I have the S Pen keeper feature turned on. Is it possible to know the last time it detected the S-Pen nearby?
Also, would it be possible to reverse the S Pen keeper function? That is, to show a warning when it's nearby?
Thanks in advance.
The S-pen keeper doesn't detect when the S-pen is near the phone, it detects when the phone move without having the S-pen.
So, unfortunately your phone won't alert you when you will be close to the stylus :-\
I have no idea whether the phone has a "s-pen log", but it would be a interesting feature to add if not.

Hmm, is there a notification log (I'm quite new with Android)? I found some apps to have one, so maybe we don't have function natively.
I ask this because I could've cleared a bunch of notifications without noticing the S Pen warning.
I do wonder, if the S pen would drop, without knowing it?
So... is the pen that comes with SGN equal to the one in SGN2? How about the one that comes SGN10.1?

I have the Note 2 and the 10.1. The stylus works on both but they don't fit in each other's holes

my s pen is somewhere in my room!
The strangest thing happens to me. I noticed I had lost my s pen. So I ordered a new one. But when I went to leave my bedroom this morning I got a vibration from my phone saying s pen disconnected. My phone must have reaquired the pen in the room overnight somehow...so I went back in the room and looked for it...but couldn't find it. Then I went out of the room again...and nothing happened. Is there a way of 'searching' for the pen? If not how did my phone reaquire it? And what does the pen icon in the notification area mean? (connected? Or lost?)
Hi,
I dont think your note re acquired the spen. The notification will have been when the note sensed that you were walking with the spen not attached. Prob means you had it recently tho...

If you think you used s-note with the s-pen last then check what time it saved its latest changes at and figure out where you were at that time.

I saw a post where someone called the missing pen alert a gimmick. Well the "gimmick" saved me a problem tonight. I was leaving the Vet's office with my dog pulling on the leash and dropped the phone. Thank goodness no damage, I just popped the battery cover back on and all appeared good. I was out the door when I got a beep-beep. Looked at the phone and got the Detached Pen message. I went back in and found the pen under a pet supply display 5 feet from where I dropped the phone. The thing is; It was late, I had a busy evening planned and was rushing to get places with no time to play with the phone. I would not have used the pen again until tomorrow at the earliest. Assuming it hadn't been swept up by the cleaning crew by then I doubt I would have thought to look at the Vet's office anyway. The gimmick saved me the replacement cost plus loss of use. This is my first Samsung and I'm impressed with how well thought out the device is. Good by HTC, I enjoyed our time together but I have found a new and better love.

Glad it saved you! It does work but it is just not as "techy" as it could be... It saved you this time but might not rely on it in the future as it is hit and miss for a lot of people, but I have left my stylus on my couch and it's went off a few times on me... Saved me from walking a longer distance! LOL
yeah ignore all those fools who call this a gimmick. how is this a gimmick
For some reason this feature doesn't work for me. I can take out the pen and walk around without it and it never alerts me.

Myself neither. Ensured it's enabled in the settings menu then tested by walking down the hall of my building and back with it in my office.
It was not working for me but after reading some other posts on the forum. .. It was said you need to not only ensure the feature for the alert is on. .. but the screen needs to be sleeping as well. .. tried it just now and it works fine for me ...I tried it earlier with the screen not sleeping and no alert. ..so confirmed the screen needs to be in stand by mode and not on.

I guess thats because you can already see in the notification bar the "S-Pen detached" notification when the screen is on.

I also thought it was a gimmick. I left my S pen on my table and walked around the room steadily holding my phone waiting for an alert. Nothing. Then I read in a thread here that holding the phone steady in your hand testing the feature doesn't really work. Holding the phone steady doesn't simulate "walking movement" it is as if your are sitting there with your phone in hand with your pen resting on your desk. The phone needs to jostle a little (my words) to activate the alert. I tested with a little "jostling" and it worked just fine.
question about note 2 pen missing alert function.
Does anyone know what technology using for this feature. proximity sensor or accelerometer? or using EMR technique?
I am so curious.
I was wondering about the same thing.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
It appears to be accelerometer based. If you take the pen out, put the phone on the table, and walk away with the pen, the phone doesn't seem to react. Do the opposite, and the phone lets you know, if the function is enabled.

I know in order to trigger the alert, you need to satisfy 2 conditions: pen is 10 ft. away from phone && phone needs to in motion
obviously, the 2nd condition implies using accelerometer to sense the axis of the phone. What about the 10 ft away. what sensor is used to measure this? proximity sensor? or some EMR? I dont think EMR can transfer any signals in 10 ft distance.
Thank you
You do not need to be 10' away to trigger the alert. You can remove the pen, place it on your desk, power off the screen and gently shake the phone to simulate walking. It seems it's just using the accelerometer to detect walking like motion.
Other things that will trigger the alert:
Removing the pen, placing it in one pocket and the phone in another pocket and walking.
Removing the pen, placing it on a chair in the middle of the room, placing the phone in your pocket, and walking around the chair.
I have tried all 3 methods above. Proximity has nothing to do with it.

Great experiment!!!
some article misleads me saying 10' distance.
now it is clear
Thank you very much
Interesting. I tested this last week by putting the pen on my kitchen table then walking at least 100 feet away from my house outside and nada. Oh and yes, I have S Pen keeper enabled and I'm running stock Deodexed.

Galaxy note 2 is designed very user friendly like when you remove S-pen, it will show you the S-note menu, When you insert the earphone, it will show you the music app. I have also experienced this S-pen detachment alert that is really an awesome feature.

If you hold the phone while you walk, like you would while using it, it won't trigger the alert. It needs to think it's been put away, like in a pocket or holder of some kind.

Screen just needs to be off IMHO. pull the S-pen out put it on your desk. Then with the warning turned on, shake your phone. Doesn't matter if the S-pen is 6 inches away or 100 ft. So long as the screen is off and the phone senses motion it'll trigger IME.

Hey guys. I recently replaced my headphone jack on this baby (long story lol). I ordered the part and took it to a tech and got it replaced. I'm not sure if I'm noticing it now or if it was happening before but my s pen always is in detached mode and no s note pops up or page buddy anymore. Do you guys think he coulda forgot to plug something in or could there be a software issue because the pen works it just always has the icon.
Id suggest u to take it to that guy who installed it and raise ur concerns. ...and for future this is a question, so it goes in q&a

There is a little switch that tells when the S-Pen is attached or detached. It could have been broken or left disconnected. I would take it back where you got the headphone jack fixed.

Thanks for the insight and the heads up for a noob poster lol. I will definitely be giving dude a call first thing. I do remember him saying he had to be delicate to ensure something really small didn't break so im going to assume that's what it was. Ill let you guys know my progress!
Hi,
This has happened to me recently I don't know what happened.
I just flashed a new ROM and this "S-Pen has been detached"
Can anyone take a picture with the bare microchips of thr Note 2? I would like to see what is missing.
I have discovered my tablet suffers what seems to be a common problem with other Note models.
I have been a little disappointed with battery life and today noticed the tablet vibrating as I was walking, it was detecting the spen removal every thirty seconds or so, even with the tablet in my hand and relatively still. This turns the screen on.
It is most likely going back tomorrow, sadly for a refund as they have no stock, I've had charging issues too. On two occasions it only reached around 53% powered off charging overnight and only hit 90% one evening when powered on, that said, this has only happened a couple times early on. Maybe just the battery finding it's footing and calibrating itself?
It got me thinking though, I'm using a snugg case with a magnet on the closure. Does anyone know if the spen uses a magnet in the silo?
I do occasionally find that with the cover folded round the back that it can cause the screen to go off, so the magnet must be of a reasonable strength. Maybe it's interfering with the silo detecting the pen?
Any thoughts please?
Im pretty sure its not a magnetic sensor, maybe its a pressure sensor of some sort? (i really have no clue lol)
But I had the same problem with mine, and found that if i physically pressed down on the top of the pen when it was inside the silo,
it would temporarily resolve the problem.
if your s-pen isnt snug and can slide in/out, the tablet might not detect the pen as being inside the silo.
Got my exchanged and the s-pen is MUCH more snug, no problems whatsoever.
Im using the Poetic Slimline case (has magnets) and have been using it for over 2 months now, no problems whatsoever.

That setting seems to do nothing, even after reboot. Still detects the pen in and out. Is that normal? Doesn't sound like it.
Short explanation:
"An electromagnetic field is generated from a circuit behind the screen. The S Pen picks this up and uses it to power itself and figure out its position relative to the screen. It sends this, along with information from the S Pen button and the nib at the end, back to the Note."

I'm sure S-pen detection is the feature where it lets you know if you walk away with your tablet without the s-pen.
My S-pen and Silo are both fine and it still vibrates and I have detection off too.

From what I've read, the tablet doesn't have that walk away feature and it's limited to the note phones.

S-Pen detection disables the digitiser if the S-Pen is IN the holster. It save a bit of power.
I have the HM5100 Bluetooth Pen. It works like this.
With "Disable pen detection" unchecked I can use the BT spen while the note' spen is still in the holster.
With "Disable pen detection" checked the BT spen does not work util I remove the note' spen from the holder.

That makes sense, thanks.
GT-N5110 wifi version. Ive had this device for 10 days. Out the box it was running 4.1.2 and seemed work great other than the occasional 3-5 seconds when screen would become unresponsive during normal use. After using it for a few days I decided to go ahead and update to 4.2.2 thinking maybe it would fix the screen issue. It did fix that issue but now im having another problem. After the device sits dormant for awhile the screen doesnt respond to touch but still works fine with the s pen. Ill turn it on after sitting all night and after swiping to unlock the screen it becomes unresponsive. I usually have to lock/unlock the screen several times before it will start responding. After it starts working I can be on it for hours with no more problems. But if I lock the screen an set it down for awhile when I go to use it again it does the samething. It seems like it has to warm up. I tried doing factory data reset but that didnt help. It is rooted also but the only thing ive done so far is get rid of some bloatware.(i didnt root it untill after the problem started). Anyone have any advice?
Do you have your note in a cover , and if so does it have a magnet.

That does sound rather crazy, the unresponsiveness is out of the ordinary... did you try turning off a lot of the extra features built in by Samsung? another thing you could do is download Clean Master from the play store and take a look at your Ram use-age and clean out some cache files with it, this might help with the lag. The touch response could be hindered due to a case or screen protector... other than that the only thing i could think is if there was physical damage done to it before that could cause the touch screen to act that way.
Ummmm... I would have taken it back to the store and asked for a replacement.
That is not normal at all. even with the device's settings left alone, there should not be any issues with responses with touch.
Note... The pen feature is totally separate from touch. The screen has two different features, one being a digitizer for the pen function the other for touch. It is possible that during assembly that the connection for the touch screen is faulty, as a bad solder joint during wave process could make the connection heat related. As the device cools, the contacts contract causing a fault with touch operation. When heated up from normal use, expansion forces contact between connector and board for normal operation to function with touchscreen.

The problem was my samsung book cover! Can't believe samsung would make a cover that causes these kinds of issues. Glad I only paid 7 bucks on ebay instead of 50 at best buy. Thanks guys for the comments!

Thanks for the FYI. I was using the moko whatever with a keyboard and I got the freezes all the time. I was thinking about the official Samsung one but if that gives you problems then forget it. I almost sold this thing on eBay cause I couldn't take the freezes anymore. Now I use a tpu case with it and couldn't be happier
