the JB update for TMO GS3 got a new (atleast to me) night mode that is phenomenal
seems like it's doing multiple captures then merge, noise reduction, and tone map for the result
end result is image quality about equal to when taken with ISO 600-800 but brightness equal to about ISO 3200-6400 when compared to my dSLR (set to f/2.8).
I dont have any sample images on hand. Show me yours
Sounds like HDR. I don't see a "night mode" on my camera.

do you have the latest official JB update (came out a day few days ago)?
it's actually called "low light". second option from the bottom in the shot mode selection.
Ah, that might be it. Haven't tried it yet.

I think I shook my hand on the LLS (low light shot).

True, that's why it's nice to have both option, especially if the night mode photo is actually usable, not just a failure attempt.
With that being said, so even though we have flash, it's still nice to have a usable low light mode.

Can you guys post the exif data of a pic taken with the new night mode? I'd like to see the ISO the pic is taken in. Usually to take a pic in low light conditions, the ISO is boosted. I just want to see how high the ISO goes to.

Flash results in a harsh lighting result, where night mode gives a less harsh, but brighter/clearer picture than we had before.

Good day everyone,
When using my device in low light surroundings, i tend
to experience the brightness as too high, is there any
way of lowering the minimum brightness?
I'm running the note2core std kernel, stock debloated
dlk7 rom (rooted )
I have tried the following with ROM Toolbox pro;
Go to build.prop editor
Found the value "ro.lcd_min_brightness"
Standard value was 20, lowering this number did
nothing for me, i tried 15, 12, 5 and 0..
I have also tried lowering this value whike using
another kernel like stock, redpill and N.E.A.K.
And also not working on stock ROM..
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot

Screen Filter is good, but it doesn't really lower the brightness. It applies a filter which makes the display darker. Any screenshot you take will be darker. But other than that, it's perfect for low light situations
I like this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsInB0LmJiYXJhby5uaWdodG1vZGUiXQ..
My vote is for Screen Filter. I have used rt every night and every morning for the last 2 years. Never any problems.
Let's change my question;
Is it hardwarewise possible to lower
the minimum brightness? If so, please share
I wondered this too and I'm surprised that there hasn't been a mod/tweak to allow you to get the brightness as low as possible without the use of apps. I've tried everything from editing build.prop to decompiling framework-res.apk, but nothing to seems to really work.

I think it has more to do with the software than hardware.

This is likely done on purpose. Imagine the frustration of going outdoors and your screen was set so dim that your phone is useless until you can see enough to raise the brightness.

+1 for lux, works on hardware level to lower brightness and not by just adding a darkening filter.

Nope, lux definitely works by adding a filter in sub-zero mode. Not that this matters except when taking screenshots because as I said before, on an OLED screen this is essentially the same thing. But thanks for the recommendation, lux is a very nice app.

You could try edit the build. prop and set the minimum brightness level to something like 10. By default its 20. Quickest way I use is the build. prop Editor in rom toolbox.

Hey everyone,
recently bought xperia z with stock firmware .434 and then updated to .253 but not too happy with the camera update. I don't know what sony has done but the pictures that i take indoors are full of noise not just on the darker parts of the picture but almost all around it. i'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem. so i ask if anyone can provide me with the stock camera app of .434 firmware which can be flashed on firmware .253.

It's not just because of the app but kernel tweaks and other stuff.
Camera is much better in .253 so far. Noisier pics, I agree, but they also are sharper and preserve fine details better.

Use SCN mode, you will extreme happy.

Thanks for your replies juanmaasecas and Andrewtst and yes i do believe that the camera produces much more sharper images during good lighting conditions but pictures taken during low light and times when we have to fire up the flash, i just can't bear the noise that creeps up. it's just preference that i would like my pictures softer rather than noisier. so i believe i need to downgrade if i need the earlier camera. How about third party apps? will there be any difference in picture quality? or maybe 4.2 camera app or the cybershot camera app optimized for xperia z.
Thanks again..

new stock camera is great..
anyway, you can remove noise with stock scene function night portrait and with app ProCapture with reduce noise function
with night portrait scene you have details and denoise, one light year from old artificial denoise
Night portrait may produce less noisy pictures but it gets the white balance wrong like all other auto modes.
The indoor and low light shots in normal mode, which is the only way to get the white balance right, are very poor indeed. Noise riddled.
More detail but a lot of the pictures are unusable.
I don't use cropped images and I feel the camera's details where fine as there were at no crop so I'm not convinced by this more detail for more noise exchange at all.
I too I'm leaning towards the position of the OP.
I wonder, don't you guys like clean images.

hey everyone
thanks for your suggestion. after trying different settings and modes specially night portrait , night portrait denoises the picture pretty well but your hands should be steady while taking a picture and with shaky hands like mine , 1 out of 3 pictures came out ok . most of the time i'm taking pictures of my friends and family so night portrait was not that reliable because while taking picture either the person moves or my hands. i'm thinking of downgrading to .434 . would like to have your suggestions and downsides to downgrading my xz.
Edit : i'm gonna upload a picture which might be the worst picture taken by my xz .
If any of you are like me, you might have been disappointed that we aren't able to use the stock camera app on cm10 based roms due to the framework.
Well here's the solution! Snap Camera HDR! It uses the exact same layout as the Android 4.2 camera that we are all already familiar with, so there's no having to get used to a different camera app. The only difference here is it does everything AND MORE that the stock s3 camera app does.
In the settings there is lots to choose from, different effects, specific storage location, ability to bind volume keys. Video settings allows you to change the bitrate, video/audio codecs, file format, framerate, and more.
A few features I reeeaalllly missed from the stock camera app that the stock 4.2 app wasn't letting me do was:
simple burst mode (the 4.2 app makes you choose how many you want to take in burst, rather than holding the button until you get the desired amount)
working HDR (I've found the 4.2 app's HDR mode simply doesn't work sometimes, like the stock camera app did.)
The ability to take pics as fast as your finger can press the button (4.2 camera doesn't keep up as fast as stock)
Snap Camera however does all of this.
Here it is on the play store. I definitely recommend it!!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marginz.snap&feature=search_result
There appears to also be a trial version, but for some reason it averages 3.5/5 stars (while the full version has a perfect 5 star review). I haven't personally tried the trial, I just instantly purchased the full version for $1.99.
One of my favorite effects that Snap camera comes with is the ability to take black and white pictures while only letting a certain color through. For example if I were to allow only blue to pass through, the whole picture would be black and white except for the blue sky (or any other blues in the picture). Here are some pics I took showing this, from my car, to my pet parakeets, to a view of my street.

Looks cool, however I'd like to know if the HDR portion is as slow as the HDR of the stock camera app?
One thing I've noticed is that Apple's iOS camera has HDR, and it's three pictures are so quickly snapped you don't need to hold it too steady and it still looks decent, where as Android's HDR, if you don't have a tripod and a solid surface, don't use HDR..
The HDR on this app is actually pretty fast. A big step up from stock. It takes each picture in less than a half second apart and you can hold it just as steady as you would taking a regular picture. It also let's you choose the exposure and contrast amount of HDR, how extreme or subtle you want it.

Thanks for the heads up. I just flashed for the first time ever CM and have been precisely looking for a quality camera app. I have only messed with free apps so far and am really liking Camera360, which has absolutely tons of effects and takes good pictures. However, it is a little slow in taking pics and so I am in the market for something that is definitely faster. I will read up on some reviews on Snap Camera and decide.
The developer actively monitors his xda thread for bugs as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055140
There is an option to take faster pictures (called fast picture). Renders the picture as fast as you can press the button. Works great in conjunction with burst mode where you hold down the shutter and it continuously takes pictures.
And I had no idea he had a thread here! That's awesome! I'm gonna ask him if (real 480fps) slow motion video is possible like on the galaxy s4 camera.

I don't see a "fast picture" mode. I wonder if it's hardware dependent?
EDIT: Nevermind...it's in the picture size menu. Wow, that's so fast combined with burst, it's way overkill. The slowest part of taking a photo is always the focus, so I'll leave Fast Picture off, unless I adopt a hummingbird.

Well, if you downloaded the latest version (3.5.5) I am afraid to tell you it didn't work with me either. Just the first version (release) did.
Some of its features give force close in almost every device though. For example, Panorama cannot be used properly. The same happens to "Magic GIF" and some filter options as well as the "Super Gallery". All the other Configuration options work superb by the way, even normal GIF and a few filters.
The thread where I (think) got the first release from is the following:

I'm not 100% sure, but check that out. I'll try to re-upload the one I have.

Hey everyone. I just updated the camera to the update that allows RAW support. Unfortunately, it isn't doing me any good. When I swap from the regular camera I lose the ability to set up manual settings. I can take an image but it looks like it is over exposing by a ton. The highlights are absolute white as the camera tries to bring out the darkest portions of the photo. Where you would swap between camera exposure modes in the normal camera module, is replaced only by the gear for settings and I have no 3 dot menu. Basically the RAW control is useless (for me) because the camera goes and does whatever it wants without letting me control it.
I can keep shooting in the regular camera module but I am a professional photographer and would love to be able to touch up my photos in lightroom or photoshop for some fun.
At this point what I am wondering is, am I the only one with this issue? I will get ahold of a screenshot on the phone so that everyone can see what is happening as well.

Same for me. Tried wiping app data + cache for camera app and rebooting as well, still the same.

This is exactly what I did as well. I was super excited for RAW since I use Lightroom and Photoshop a ton.
Yep same here.
What does the raw image look like in photoshop? Are you able to adjust the levels since a raw image is supposed to contain all the info to be controllable just like the settings in regular mode, but in post production? (as you know, but someone else might not)
These photos could look just fine, they just have to be photoshopped, which was the point of raw anyway, but just look like trash in the phone beforehand. Of course, being that washed out is a pita
Just curious, I haven't taken the update

TADA! Raw vs edited raw. And you can definitely edit every value in photoshop
Same problem
Having the exact same issue. No manual shutter or focus control, causing my images to be extremely overblown, even putting it into light room can't get the highlights in control, seems like the shutter is staying open for a long time because everything is super blurry. I've seen screenshots of people using the camera and having access to the manual settings, I don't understand why they aren't there for me.
subscribed. +1 on same problem.
Hmmmm. What could this be. Those who know me know I'm a stock Rom guy. [emoji12]

I'm also missing the manual controls in RAW. Have tried uninstalling the camera update and reinstalling with no luck. Have poked around in all the settings, everything. Would sure appreciate some ideas!

International base has the controls. Nothing Verizon does yet, unless your @dottat and have clairvoyant powers
