I just got the Note 2 yesterday, upgraded from S3. I'm very happy with the phone, but the resolution is a disappointment.
From an article comparing the two:
The measurement of the display for the Galaxy S3 is a length of 136.6mm, width of 70.6mm, and a depth of 8.6mm. The screen size is measured in 4.8-inches with a pixel resolution of 1,280x720 with a 306 pixels per inch (ppi). The Galaxy Note 2 is measured with a longer length of 151.1mm, 80.5 width, and a depth of 9.4mm. The screen is measured at a larger 5.5 inches, but the same pixel resolution and a lower ppi of 267.

Here's what it feels like: I am used to using a 24" monitor, 1080p. I once got to use a 27" monitor that was the same resolution. I quickly became aware that it really wasn't beneficial. I couldn't put more apps on there, things were just bigger.
So, in the case of this phone, I still see the same amount of App Icons on the desktop (4 across, 5 down). I still see the same amount of twitter posts.
Most of you are going to point out the DPI change/fix. Well, I've been there and done that, and have been dissapointed with it. I ran it on the S2 forever. And there were apps that didn't quite work; the market was horrible. After a month I switched it off, cleared the market data, and realized I had many updates that wouldn't get put on with the right dpi. I've seen issues in the DPI thread.
Not much I can do about it, just wanted to put this out there. I think they could of given us better resolution on this phone. Maybe the Note 3.

LOL.
Anyway, yes, I agree, the Note 2 should have had at least the same resolution as the Note 1 (not a downgrade!) and higher than the S3. But I'm guessing a pocket 1080 (or whatever) display would make the phone prohibitively expensive. Not to mention you risk people complaining that the text is too small - you can't please everybody. There needs to be a lot more effort put into handling text size on these devices so that various needs can be met. Everything on the Note 2 is ridiculously oversized for me still even with the font set to "Tiny".
I also miss having 5 icons across on the stock launcher from the Note 1, which is sort of a related issue.
But I still think the Note 2 is the best smartphone I've ever used, by a long shot.
that's the power of AMOLED. they always have poor resolution. this is the only real downfall to samsung devices. ):
coming from an S3 I have been happy with the screen, bump up the font size in chrome and on twitter and it's a joy to use, and videos do look amazing!
I'll take the slightly lower resolution with a non-pentile screen. Worth the tradeoff, IMO.
I think resolution is good to me. I plan on messing with dpi anyways though.

i think you are upset at the screen not being wider like the note 1 because the new DNA has 1080p and it still shows the same amount of info a 720p screen does... i think the problem isn't the ppi it seems like u just wanted the screen to do more then show the same info but bigger with a 1080 screen u could have put more info on the screen but how small would u have to make everything to do so is the real question.... but for me i love the note and the screens ppi because its just below the ppi a human eye can see and it still IMO the best phone out period.
Just found this exdialer if you lower dpi and dont like the small stock dialer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tb2Rvb2h1dC5kaWFsZXIiXQ..
I am happy with the phone, let me be clear, it's fantastic.
However, it seems like there can be a sweet spot between icons/fonts too big (how I feel it is now) and too small. I am SURE there are technical limitations to this, but I would expect Samsung could figure it out. They are REALLY good at making screens with different resolutions!
At this point, nothing is changing, but let me throw out a few more things to help clarify my stance and my wish list. That's all this is at this time, a wish list.
On the S3, I was very happy with the icon & font size to screen size ratio (Is this what PPI is?). In my opinion, it is perfect. I think Samsung feels that way too, it's their flagship.
Here's how I think of it. The S3 is 70.6mm across. If each icon takes up let's say 15mm on the S3 (totally made up these numbers) it looks good. Thats 4 icons across plus space in-between them.
So, in my mind I would think that on the Note 2, they would take that same size 15mm icons, and spread it across the 80mm wide screen. That would look very good. Instead, they made the icons 18mm big, and it looks big and awkward.
As a consumer, I think this is a reasonable request. I REALLY hate to say this, but AppIe got this right on the Iphone 5. They added an extra row of icons, keeping the icons all the same size (yeah, they made a really awkward resolution for it, not defending that all. If I cared st all about the Iphone 5, I would have prefered wider & taller, not just taller). I feel they cheapened the experience of the Note 2 with the same resolution as the S3.
I will get used to it just putting my opinion out there. I have been such a Samsung Fanboy lately, but I still feel I need to point out where they could do better.
Cant please everyone. Having upgraded today from an og Evo4g, all I can say is wow.

I posted a video showing how to increase display resolution on Galaxy S II. I'm running at 1200 x 720 and looks great. I did it on my T-mobile SGSII, but I would think that it would work the same way on the Epic 4G Touch.

There are a issues with a few stock apps, so make sure to watch the whole thing if you can, as I demonstrate everything I've run into so far.
p.s. For rooted phones only and even though process is ultra simple, don't hold me responsible if you mess up your phone

Super cool, however the only reason I'd do this is for my phone to be even super sexy-er. However, due to the broken apps/stock dialer looking odd + applications drawer comes out very odd, this just makes my phone feel crappy.
Thanks for the great find though, still looking for one that does everything right.

Fair enough, although issues are very minor and most people I know don't use stock launcher and even get rid of touchwiz entirely..
Lcd resolution is cool but its not worth it for me because of the stock apps that look tiny. It would be cool if someone made a rom that scaled the stock apps when using lcd resolution.
Someone needs to create a ROM with TouchWiz 720p from the Galaxy Note and include LCD Resolution.
That would be amazing.
160 dpi FTW!
So far I'm liking it. The email app is a little funky. Changing font size helped but the email app's homepage is still funky. Anyone know where to fix font size in that APK? I could not find it.
I'm using the 1200x720 with Launcherpro. Some widget placement and sizing is a little weird, seen that before on other phones when you play with density. For the most part, works great.

My friend, this video is clearly not for you. I'm not teaching how to do it, I'm showing what it looks like and why you might want to do it and why not. This video is also for people who haven't bought the SGS2 yet and are on the fence because 800x480 on a 4.5" display for many isn't good enough. Also for those who haven't rooted yet and can't try it for themselves. I apologize if I've wasted your time.

Will running at a lower dpi than 720p fix some of the alignment issues?
Is everything easily reversible?
[email protected] spongebob.... good finding.. thanks for the video. I gotta try it out.
tried it, seems to work. tho i'm thinking it just scales down 1200x720 down to LCD's stock 800x480 for displaying on phone's LCD, effectively missing the whole point of 720p. of course, that's a hardware limitation so we can't get around that
the real trick comes in when you're using it over HDMI, which i tested and it does work well. one thing i wasnt able to tell was whether my monitor shows the 1200x720 scaled down to stock 800x480 and then upscaled to 1080i image or whether it was showing the actual 1200x720 scaled up to 1080i image. if its the 2nd then i would LOVE someone to write an app/kernel that changes dpi to make phone's UI be 1920x1080 streamed pixes-for-pixel to a 1080p tv when using HDMI and then when i'm back to normal it would revert dpi to show the normal 800x480. *true* 1080p ui over HDMI + bluetooth mouse/keyboard support = ultimate portable device!
edit: taking screenshots at both stock and various resolutions produce 800x480 PNG... so yep, seems like it just scales down high resolution down to stock

yeah, theres no way to actually change the real resolution to anything higher than native res. its hardware based.. the only way to get a higher res panel, would be well..to put a higher res panel in it. Software cant add pixels to hadrware.
I think its great that he posted a video showing what the differences look like for anyone on the fence though. no need to flame the OP, hes just trying to contribute fellas
A prevalent question on these Nitro forums is whether or not to buy it...As compared to <whatever> phone. I think the most common comparison is with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
The problem is, the GS2 is an 800x480 resolution phone. To get an idea of why that doesn't make sense, go ahead and set your laptop's screen resolution to 800x600. How's that look to you? Now walk over to your computer and set it to 1280x800, how's that?
Not exactly a controlled and scientific comparison right? Different systems, different screens, different just about everything.
IMHO, if you're considering the Nitro and want to compare it to something?...Then there's really only 1 other phone (in the US, anyway); the HTC Rezound which has the exact same CPU/GPU chipset and 1280x720 screen (LCD though, not IPS). You could also compare with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there's a LOT of variances there too but it's one of the only phones that also has the 1280x720 screen.
I stress the commonality of 1280x720 because not everything works properly (or even at all) when trying to display at this resolution and also there's potential draw delays to compensate. So make sure you're looking at the other phones that could share this same hurdle so you set your expectations accordingly.
good points, thanks!
To add two more 720P phones were announced at ces coming to AT&T. The Sony Xperia Ion and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD.
@Namura: Appreciate the "cold water" treatment. might make others think twice both for flaming the P930 and the comparison to other units.
@Kindawack: prototypes/announced phones don't figure into what he is talking about, as they are not market launched yet.
Knock it off all stay on topic and stop arguing, doesn't belong on xda!!!

Yeah, I wonder about the validity of their info as well. Considering the Samsung Note LTE for AT&T was only announced yesterday at CES...With the only confirms being 1.5GHz Qualcomm chipset (but no verification as to which model) and availability as "in the coming months"...Whereas that pdadb shows it as releasing in Feb and has the same APQ8060 chip as our Nitro.
man, i am way past waiting for the next kick ass phone to be released. I had been waiting since the droid bionic announcement (the 1st one ;-0) prior to getting this nitro.

Yup, I agree. I spent 5 months waiting for nothing..... as each day passes I'm more and more pleased with the Nitro.

I am constantly hoping for a CWM breakthrough for our phone but then I remember that I am actually 100% satisfied with my rooted, debloated, blue icon and battery mod, go launcher ex Nitro, then I don't worry about CWM as much.
Same here. As long I am rooted, debloated, custom launcher (zean) and sim unlocked I am good. Custom roms would nice but a lot of time, they are a pain to keep up.

I know benchmarks dont mean squat, but I am surprised how Nitro HD fairs well in any 3D benchmarks especially with 720p screen and sub-optimised soft. See attached Antutu benchmark. Barely behind Galaxy Nexus with ICS.
I just fired up Shadowgun and it does drop a frame here and there. No Tegra afterall but 4.5 inch 720p is looking better than I remember playing on Atrix 4G.
LMAO
IPS is just one type of LCD,
IPS, MVA, PVA, ASV are all good screen types,
the only bad screen is TN, which is never used on high end android devices.
AMOLED sucks IMO, over saturated, and your vision killer. Dont even mention most of the AMOLED on the market is pentile display.

Holy cow. That thing is beautiful. Maybe they've been listening to the customers by bringing back the SD slot etc. The choice of colours is pretty nice too. Also, anyone have any clarification on what this "with Google" thing is about, is it something to do with the multi-manufacturer/multi-nexus information we had a while ago, or is it simply going to be placed on all android phones in future?

"With Google" I suspect it is a branding that is gong to be coming to all devices running JB out of the gate going forward.
As nice as this device looks, is this supposed to compete with the Note 2? It seems to have no extra software tailored to use the extra real estate in any meaningful way over the One S even. Likewise 2000mAh battery on a 1080p screen? Unless the sharp screen technology is extremely energy efficient or I'd be surprised to see the device push 3 hours of screen on time at automatic brightness, which given its push as a media consuming / watching device because of its full HD screen is a bit woeful.
To me the device is a bit like 'the emperors new clothes'.... But damn they are sexy clothes.....

I think you're right, it's neither here or there in terms of size. If they were going to go direct with the Samsung they needed a bigger battery (at least 3000mah) and a 5.5 inch screen. I think this is just a "big phone", not a true phablet.
Holy crap!
That is amazing!
I'd trade in my HOX for that bad boy!
It has seriously good looks, has an MicroSD card slot, yes yes yes!
Onboard storage is lacking but I'm guessing that's to conserve space for the MicroSD slot, so meh...
I wonder how thin and light it is!
Its also called the Butterfly not the Butterly.
If you ask me, and you haven't, but I'll put my two cents worth in anyway! It just looks a little taller than the One X. Width and depth seem similar given the "impression" the pics give. Obviously HTC have more to offer than just a bigger screen unlike Apple with their iPhone 5!!!!
Pixel Density of 440ppi as opposed to the iPhone 5's 326ppi, take that retina display!

And nagging devs to optimize games for Tegra3!
I'm almost annoyed I'm in a contract for my HOX now as I know I'm going to want that so hard when it's released!
So much for HTC not diluting the market this year!!!
This phone will also be waterproof, the nexus variant will be released when the LG nexus is announced. It says on the back of the device with google because it probably has the hardware specs that meet the standards of the Nexus program.
Their are a lot if people saying that this phone has with google because it runs jelly bean out the box not true. Their are many device being released with jelly bean with no with google on the back if it.
Another reason why I believe this is a nexus phone because surely when they unveiled it they would have talked about the hardware but they didn't, because if they do then what are they going to talk about when they unveil the nexus edition in the coming weeks. They also have sad this phone will be available during December so why announce it now.
This is HTC's way of hinting they will be releasing a nexus phone. It looks best in black because then the finish of it is not shiny. Another thing I have noticed is the charger port has a flap that obviously points to it being water proof. They have only spoken about the display ppi they haven't spoken about the screen tech. This will only be spoken about when the google nexus phones are unveiled.
This is certainly the best nexus phone coming out easily beating the LG nexus. The only thing I want from this now is a good battery life which I think will be the same as the one x U.S variant, but slightly better since it will have android 4.2 running on it

I hope it still has use of the HTC Image Sense chip.
Looks great, but I honestly still like the One X's design better. Also, that new Sense variation looks weird, what with those strange icons on the left.

It's probably customizable, those could be widgets.
First, let me say up front I do not regret giving up my iPhone for the SGN2. I love this phone!
But it is not perfect. Some of my annoyances may very well be things about Android I just haven't learned yet. If that's the case, please educate me! Others are probably design or feature choices. If you know of a workaround, please share it.

I enabled the double-tap on the top of the phone (Settings | System | Motion | Double-tap to top) but that only works in a very few places. With the iPhone, tapping the top edge of the display provided a consistent solution.
2. I expected with the large display and high resolution to have more screen real estate on which information would be displayed. Instead all the display items (buttons, text boxes, etc.) are larger and the "Tiny" font isn't really. Sometimes I feel like I bought a remedial phone, kind of like the big print version of Readers Digest.
3. Along the same lines, why is it I can't find widgets that I can resize smaller in order to fit more information on my home screen?
4. Inflated ratings on the apps in the Play Store. Are there any 2-star rated apps? I've tried some 3- and 4-star rated apps that I would have rated no higher than 2-stars. But I have to say there certainly aren't any over-priced apps that I have run across.
5. There are Android ports or equivalents to almost all the apps I used regularly on my iPhone, but I'm sad I haven't found substitutes for some. I used Guitar Toolkit every day (for both guitar & ukulele). Thanks to forums I have found some lesser substitutes, but why do they all use midi sounds instead of actual samples of guitar & uke strings? I haven't found a substitute yet for iTunes but am still looking. And I have just begun my search for an equivalent to Camera+.
I really am fond of this phone, annoyances and all. To me, this is what the Apple Newton (anyone remember that?) would have been if Apple (Steve Jobs, actually) hadn't dropped the product after 2-3 years. I loved my Newtons which has caused me to form a strong emotional bond to this phone.
Anyone have their own annoyances--or solutions for mine?
Doug
1. There might be some application for this. Possibly. I'm not entirely sure. Android however, has complete flick scrolling. All you have to do is give it sufficient momentum, and you can fly to the top or bottom no problem. But I guess that isn't a solution really.
2 & 3. There isn't really an answer for this yet. It's bothering a lot of people. Once we get AOSP, we will hopefully get a port of ParanoidAndroid. Which will fix your issue. You can always turn down the LCD density in the build prop. But doing so will break most applications. You should be safe with setting it to 240.
4. The variety of Android phones is immense. And as such, people moving from an older model and installing the applications they are familiar with will notice an increase in performance from that application. People aren't looking at the quality of the application, but at how it affects them and their experience with it. Which is the only explanation for why Advanced Task Killer is still popular. Ignorance.
5. That happens. Some you won't find something that lives up to the iOS equivalent. Yet I've found applications that are on Android that are incredible and don't have a good iOS equivalent. Namely, PicsArt.
I don't like that the headphone jack is on the top.
And I really liked the backing and sides on the Galaxy Nexus, which I switched from to this phone. Really plasticky, not that I'm complaining. I just really enjoyed the feel of the Galaxy Nexus
I'm glad you like the phone. Be wary though, there are plenty of people on this site with an extreme hate for Apple and it's products. Though this particular forum is really well behaved, and I've only met nice people thus far. I haven't seen people attack each other for their beliefs or past yet. Knock on wood. Haha hope that helps, even though I only offered one solution to your issues.

First, let me say up front I do not regret giving up my iPhone for the SGN2. I love this phone!

Try a different launcher like Nova or Holo. This will at least fix your issue with not being able to resize widgets, and will also give you a lot more homescreen real estate.

Neither the iPhone 5 nor the iPad Mini measured up to what I was reading about in the Android world. And there was no turning back once I saw the specs and video reviews of the SGN2!
I may be late to the party but I've got my dancing shoes on now!

Yeah pressing the top is one of the most wanted features for me, at least when you flicker you finger faster then normal it goes up quicker or down so the helps in the browser. About the screen real state is really annoying to have only 4 apps down and 4 to the side I rooted my device mostly to help someone and put a mod for the screen, is better now

The buttons being big is annoying to me too but it is what it is, I don't play guitar so idk about the rest, I tried the new iphone 5 love the design but too small, and too limited so I stay with Android this time around and love it, welcome to the group be aware that we have a lot annoying fan boys around :/

You should try flashing roms, that's where the fun begins.

So I saw this article of size comparisons between phones, most notably the new Samsung phones named "mega" 5.8 and 6.3 respectively.
Does this mean that the note 3 is NOT going to be coming in the 6.3 flavor, and all the fuzz about the samsung bluetooth controller supporting "up-to 6.3" devices was just for this new "mega" phablet?
Look at the pics and tell me what you guys think.

the galaxy note 2 is now officially a normal sized phone LOL but samsung ruined the 2 new phones by putting in dual core processors (we're not in 2011 anymore samsung)
It's more of a midrange note.. it doesn't matter to Samsung how they get their money

Those are small Galaxy Tab 2 - 7 inchers. Not big phones.
I am quite comfortable with my more powerful Note 2 over those.
There is no way I can rock over a 6 " phone. I mean miles well just get the Note8.0 and call it a day...
We have to eventually have a boundary, lol!

Yes I didn't want to compare the mega phones to ours, as ours has better specs, but I DID want to show what maybe a future note 3 might look like, in the sense that there was a probability that it would be 6.3 inches.
With that said, I used to think that 6.3 was not going to be much bigger than our phones, but looking at the pictures says otherwise. I am a big guy 6'1 and I don't think it would be practical to have such a big phone.

I hope the Note 3 looks just like that. The 6.3" one. I think it looks awesome.
The manager at T-Mo said that the rumor is that the N3 will be 6.4 almost an inch bigger than the N2. She also said to expect it really soon in a couple of months...

The Note 3 will be 6.5 in with OLED 1080p slim bezel, New s pen input octa core. Final designs and testing being complete. The Note 3 won't just be a bigger S4

Depending on price and frequencies, I'd rock one as a small tablet on the TMobile $30 plan (using data only). It's a better price than any tablet plan. Worst case scenario it might work on the AT&T tablet plans. That's my backup if the TMobile plan gets pulled. I dislike voip but I dislike high bills even more.
I have my Nexus 7 got my tablet needs. No need to get any bigger of a phone. I already feel like a meathead walking around while talking on this phone. I couldn't imagine holding the 6.3 or rumored 6.4 Note. Just to big.
With that said, just get a Note, 8.0 that has built in phone capabilities.

I feel like a meathead on my Note/get the Note 8.
Its too big the note 2 is the perfect size.

-I- want to use it as a pocketable tablet. If I make a call on it now and then, so the dub what?
It's funny to read all the "omg yura doof" comments...
No bigger for me. I just want faster performance and a better radio.
hopefully next SGS N3 will have bigger battery & better body design. we all know, how android is when it come to power mngmnt. picture of mega phablet on post #1 looks like a SGS N2 that'd been photoshoped. back button inverted. anyway, will display res size 1080p make real difference in daily use for average joe with smartphone ?
I giggle with confusion when people comment about users who talk on "big" devices, I chuckle in dismay when said owners of "big" devices say they "feel funny" talking on such a big device ............
-_-
Walking into a bar I hear "Is that a Note 2..... you're crazy that thing is too big"
In my head I would say .... ".... and you're out of line. ...^_^"...
Instead I did them one even better. ...I continued using my device and completely ignored him, in fact this is the first time I'm making reference to his comment and this was 10/12..... him and others can have a _/.... so many hypocrites and malnourished credulous followers. How do you get off saying a device screen is "too small"... yet later a device is "too big".. those sentiments are fine. ..however you missed the most important piece. . "For you".... get it ? The perfect device for you may not be the same for you. ..perhaps there are individuals who rather talk on a 10.1 in screen, while you prefer a smaller screen, why is either party concerned about the others preference? ??????? Irrelevant. Why voluntarily get a device or partake in something then speak negative and offer complaints, nobody forced you to get this phone. ..^_^

Really just makes me want a bigger Note. Now I just can't wait for the Note 3, since the Mega is a bit underpowered
noted for future reference on my Note 2
I prefer the larger screen on the Mega 6.3 but DPI is horrid. 1080P is a must these days. I don't mind the mid tier CPU since I don't game and prefer the longer battery life.
They didn't have a video, but the screen looks ok in the ubergizmo review's pictures.
