A prevalent question on these Nitro forums is whether or not to buy it...As compared to <whatever> phone. I think the most common comparison is with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
The problem is, the GS2 is an 800x480 resolution phone. To get an idea of why that doesn't make sense, go ahead and set your laptop's screen resolution to 800x600. How's that look to you? Now walk over to your computer and set it to 1280x800, how's that?
Not exactly a controlled and scientific comparison right? Different systems, different screens, different just about everything.
IMHO, if you're considering the Nitro and want to compare it to something?...Then there's really only 1 other phone (in the US, anyway); the HTC Rezound which has the exact same CPU/GPU chipset and 1280x720 screen (LCD though, not IPS). You could also compare with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there's a LOT of variances there too but it's one of the only phones that also has the 1280x720 screen.
I stress the commonality of 1280x720 because not everything works properly (or even at all) when trying to display at this resolution and also there's potential draw delays to compensate. So make sure you're looking at the other phones that could share this same hurdle so you set your expectations accordingly.
good points, thanks!
To add two more 720P phones were announced at ces coming to AT&T. The Sony Xperia Ion and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD.
@Namura: Appreciate the "cold water" treatment. might make others think twice both for flaming the P930 and the comparison to other units.
@Kindawack: prototypes/announced phones don't figure into what he is talking about, as they are not market launched yet.
Knock it off all stay on topic and stop arguing, doesn't belong on xda!!!
Only 2 720p phone on market at this time.

I meant the ones are actually on the market for sale.

GS2 HD IS on the market. Just not the US market. But if you want to talk about internationally, i think Sharp/Toshiba has got 720p phones too

Yeah, I wonder about the validity of their info as well. Considering the Samsung Note LTE for AT&T was only announced yesterday at CES...With the only confirms being 1.5GHz Qualcomm chipset (but no verification as to which model) and availability as "in the coming months"...Whereas that pdadb shows it as releasing in Feb and has the same APQ8060 chip as our Nitro.
man, i am way past waiting for the next kick ass phone to be released. I had been waiting since the droid bionic announcement (the 1st one ;-0) prior to getting this nitro.
not playing the *let's give it another month and see what's released* game no mo!
!
Yup, I agree. I spent 5 months waiting for nothing..... as each day passes I'm more and more pleased with the Nitro.

I am constantly hoping for a CWM breakthrough for our phone but then I remember that I am actually 100% satisfied with my rooted, debloated, blue icon and battery mod, go launcher ex Nitro, then I don't worry about CWM as much.
Same here. As long I am rooted, debloated, custom launcher (zean) and sim unlocked I am good. Custom roms would nice but a lot of time, they are a pain to keep up.

I know benchmarks dont mean squat, but I am surprised how Nitro HD fairs well in any 3D benchmarks especially with 720p screen and sub-optimised soft. See attached Antutu benchmark. Barely behind Galaxy Nexus with ICS.
I just fired up Shadowgun and it does drop a frame here and there. No Tegra afterall but 4.5 inch 720p is looking better than I remember playing on Atrix 4G.
LMAO
IPS is just one type of LCD,
IPS, MVA, PVA, ASV are all good screen types,
the only bad screen is TN, which is never used on high end android devices.
AMOLED sucks IMO, over saturated, and your vision killer. Dont even mention most of the AMOLED on the market is pentile display.

The defy is now actually available, rooted and confirmed to have a GPU.
Anyone interested?
There is interest in this phone, but not as much as I would have thought.
You'd think a ruggedized phone like the DEFY would get more interest, but then again it hasn't been out for even a week yet.
Maybe after it has been out for a while there will be more people that take an interest in it.
Here is hoping so!!

+1 for a section on this phone I plan to get soon!
+1
I have a Defy arriving tomorrow. Would love to see a forum for it!
+1
Motorola Defy arriving tomorrow!
+1 Can't wait to get this phone! My friend just picked it up, and I got to play with it.
Quadrant scores were right along a Vibrant, hopefully it gets Froyo before the end of the year, but I could wait, it was more than fast enough.
Weight was about the same as the Vibrant, but the form factor is awesome, the screen being 3.7 and the Vibrant being 4, you'd never guess it was that close cause the Defy is so much smaller in the hand. It's just all screen.
Games loaded fine, probably due to the PowerVR GPU. And the web browsing seemed pretty quick as well. Sound quality was also like most Motorola phones, really good, these guys can build radios and phones. And the screen is great in direct sunlight, think it's got a transreflective tft under that Gorilla glass.
But all in all, I don't understand why there isn't more hype on this phone? I'm thinking this is one of those phones that would agree with many people. Not a 4.3 monster, nor a 3.2 mini. Slightly bigger screen than an iPhone, but smaller form factor and lighter. More than powerful enough to run anything, and they made it life proof...I know in the current market, there are front facing cameras, and 4g. But really most people don't need either. They're great features for a select few, but the majority of people don't need a front facing camera or would come close to utilizing 4g. Look at how many people kept their blackberrys and iphone 1 and 2gs.
Hopefully community support with grow for this phone!! think it's time for me to start learning how to cook up some roms soon! I'm getting one today!
+1 for a Defy section
I would like to have a Phone without a need for Extra Protection.
That is the reason because I am very interested in this Phone.
can only hope some good hackers and cooks buy this phone too.. Custom ROMs are a must.
+1
my defy will arrive next week on monday

This phone looks sweet except that the proc is only 800 and the VR GPU is not included. But the rugged factor is a sale for me. I was using a mt3g in the field yesterday as a stopwatch, gps, level, camera, notes, tethering and for tunes! ...blowing dust and sprinkling rain were the only concerns and they would have been mitigated with this rig! Bring on the new era these phones have the capability of lessening my pack list for field days.
The defy actually HAS a PowerVR530 included.
The official Specs have been updated accordingly and Quadrant says so too on my Defy (which came yesterday ).

sadly ....you are mistaken. I wish it had a powerVR but it does not. its purely a CPU. I found it on a file on the TI site
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/swpt024b/swpt024b.pdf
Regardless it needs its own section so we can get some development going on it.
The defy does have a Power VR. It's a simple mistake made by Motorola or TI with the OMAP 3610. It definitely does.

Thats interesting. How did you find that info? I mean I hope its right. Just doesnt make sense cUse the phone is still slugish during screen transitions or pinch to zoom.. Maybe its the motoblur doing that but for that kind of gpu it should be much better. I installed laumcherpro, it helped alittle.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Epic Touch 4G and would definitely buy Samsung again. I have to say I would consider upgrading to his phone if Sprint got it (a CDMA version) within the next year -

dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 HD display, 2 megapixel front-facing / 8 megapixel rear camera, 1GB RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC.
Yes, there is always something better coming and this is the only phone I would think about.
It looks like a good phone and the specs suggest the phone should be pretty awesome, but I don't see myself going away from the ET4G any time soon. The development is just starting and who knows what could be made out of this phone. It's good enough as is to compete with any phone so who knows what kind of performance we could see with stable roms/kernels/tweaks etc. The 4.52 inch screen is just the perfect size imo. Anything bigger might as well be considered a tablet.
I don't really need to go much bigger than 4.5 - but 4.7 would still be just fine for me. The 1280 x 720 resolution would be sweet though. The processor on the ET4G is GREAT so going to 1.5 isn't a big deal for me. I don't really care about the NFC that phone will have so for me it really comes down to the higher res and I think the 4.7" screen will actually be the perfect size for me. That would be about as big as I could go and still do 1 handed typing.

I don't even think the proc is even a upgrade. Maybe even a downgrade.
My next phone will have to come with jellybean on the OS. Otherwise I will have nice hardware running on aged software. With Samsung don't expect anything more than what is in the box.

I'm hearing rumors the ET4G won't support EVDO rev B. If this new phone supports it, for me that would easily justify my next upgrade.
I won't be jumping to that with that CPU in there. It will be slower than the ET4G for sure.
Im perfectly fine with the ET4G for a good while.

right. adding GHz wont help an inferior GPU.
Mail-400 is a beast. There is an article explaining why the Tmobile version, even though clocked at 1.5GHz, wont be better than the exynos. Im sure it will still be a good phone, but ill take exynos over snapdragon ANY day.
if sprint did get it, the only reason id consider it would be because of the enhanced resolution as long as it was a super amoled+ or better, other than that this is my dream device

on top of that, a9 architecture is much better than a8. snapdragon cores are heavily modified a8's, but still wont beat an a9
I will say coming from the EVO 3D to the Epic Touch 4G I didn't really notice a speed difference. I don't play video games on my phone so maybe that is important for some people. I think sense can probably have an impact on perceived speed/smoothness.
I will say if the ET4G doesn't support EVDO rev. B, the network speed would be far, far more important to me.

The Galaxy S III is Samsung's new flagship smartphone and it's finally broken cover at the company's stand-alone Mobile Unpacked event here in London. With a steady stream of fakes, outright leaks and even event rescheduling, Samsung's claimed almost crazy levels of interest for its new smartphone. Weighing in at 133g (4.7 ounces) and whittled to 8.6mm at its thickest, the rounded-off design has more than a little bit in common with its Galaxy Nexus cousin. Of course, it's Samsung's new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor doing the legwork, and there's 1GB of RAM to help it out. The display has been bumped up in size to a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED affair, sporting a 1280 x 720 pixel count. Happy snappers will have an 8-megapixel rear shooter to play with, and a 1.9-megapixel eye on the front will take care of those video calls. If you were wondering about radios, it's launching with HSPA+, but there's an LTE version in the cards. As for the interface, it's TouchWiz on top of Android 4.0 again, and there's new gesture functions to help you get around. So, there it is, the phone we've all been waiting for (until the next one) but that's not all, be sure to check our hands-on coverage and additional features for the in-depth breakdown.

The TW ICS status bar is pretty bad looking, hardly a difference from Gingerbread. They would've gotten me more excited with an AOSP style status bar, but I guess that's something I'll have to do, myself.

Holy cow. That thing is beautiful. Maybe they've been listening to the customers by bringing back the SD slot etc. The choice of colours is pretty nice too. Also, anyone have any clarification on what this "with Google" thing is about, is it something to do with the multi-manufacturer/multi-nexus information we had a while ago, or is it simply going to be placed on all android phones in future?

"With Google" I suspect it is a branding that is gong to be coming to all devices running JB out of the gate going forward.
As nice as this device looks, is this supposed to compete with the Note 2? It seems to have no extra software tailored to use the extra real estate in any meaningful way over the One S even. Likewise 2000mAh battery on a 1080p screen? Unless the sharp screen technology is extremely energy efficient or I'd be surprised to see the device push 3 hours of screen on time at automatic brightness, which given its push as a media consuming / watching device because of its full HD screen is a bit woeful.
To me the device is a bit like 'the emperors new clothes'.... But damn they are sexy clothes.....

I think you're right, it's neither here or there in terms of size. If they were going to go direct with the Samsung they needed a bigger battery (at least 3000mah) and a 5.5 inch screen. I think this is just a "big phone", not a true phablet.
Holy crap!
That is amazing!
I'd trade in my HOX for that bad boy!
It has seriously good looks, has an MicroSD card slot, yes yes yes!
Onboard storage is lacking but I'm guessing that's to conserve space for the MicroSD slot, so meh...
I wonder how thin and light it is!
Its also called the Butterfly not the Butterly.
If you ask me, and you haven't, but I'll put my two cents worth in anyway! It just looks a little taller than the One X. Width and depth seem similar given the "impression" the pics give. Obviously HTC have more to offer than just a bigger screen unlike Apple with their iPhone 5!!!!
Pixel Density of 440ppi as opposed to the iPhone 5's 326ppi, take that retina display!
D: I hope this comes to Europe it looks amazing!

This phone will also be waterproof, the nexus variant will be released when the LG nexus is announced. It says on the back of the device with google because it probably has the hardware specs that meet the standards of the Nexus program.
Their are a lot if people saying that this phone has with google because it runs jelly bean out the box not true. Their are many device being released with jelly bean with no with google on the back if it.
Another reason why I believe this is a nexus phone because surely when they unveiled it they would have talked about the hardware but they didn't, because if they do then what are they going to talk about when they unveil the nexus edition in the coming weeks. They also have sad this phone will be available during December so why announce it now.
This is HTC's way of hinting they will be releasing a nexus phone. It looks best in black because then the finish of it is not shiny. Another thing I have noticed is the charger port has a flap that obviously points to it being water proof. They have only spoken about the display ppi they haven't spoken about the screen tech. This will only be spoken about when the google nexus phones are unveiled.
This is certainly the best nexus phone coming out easily beating the LG nexus. The only thing I want from this now is a good battery life which I think will be the same as the one x U.S variant, but slightly better since it will have android 4.2 running on it

But why still 8MP camera? Sharp announced 16MP already and I am expecting at least 12MP...

I thought we had moved on from the megapixel myth. Bigger is not always better....
I hope it still has use of the HTC Image Sense chip.
Looks great, but I honestly still like the One X's design better. Also, that new Sense variation looks weird, what with those strange icons on the left.
^^^
It's probably customizable, those could be widgets.
Found this on Phonearena.

On the page they have 5 great shots available at the moment.
I think they look gorgeous!
What do you think?

Black model is great !
uh.. Definitly a YES. First thing to do is to swipe through it with finger tops..(I hope it's not "praying to fly out of the hand" material)
What the.....
This cant be real, i will switch from g2 if this is real. This is Samsung Killer
Looks nice indeed, but the sheer size of it and 5.5" + 2K display running on the same battery capacity as the G2 doesn't really add up. Makes the phone a bit tough to consider. Things may change on the announcement day, though.
I dont think those are official pics. They are press renders of all leaks.

BUT s801 is more advanced and eventually consumes less energy. People would hope it's a smaller production set but i don't think it's gonna be s805(with s805 it would be total overkill)
But I'm pretty happy with my g2. Let us face it - whatever phone you buy - you will make 1st impression. After few days you will develop more impressions: negative and positive(yes..every product (stuff..) has : "I like this, I don't like that, people react different to what they see, feel, hear etc..).
This phone will be a mistake if it comes with SD801, it demands SD805 to couple with 2K screen.
The top competition is also on SD801, but they will be rendering much less pixels on FHD screens, so definitely, games will be much more slugish on G3.
It will be FHD 2,073,600 pixels VS QHD 3,686,400 pixels, something around 75% more pixels.
I wish they kept the bottom bezel clear glass as the G2.

I know these aren't the official photos as most mentioned it's just a leak renders but if it happens to be what we see here when they announce it on the 27th of this month I will make my first jump to LG.

I love it... Very nice. I do think this is how it will look because it matches every single leak I have seen, just a lot clearer photo
I hope it turns out exactly as pictured! Its gorgeous! Even thought rumors says it will have a SD801...I'm hoping for the SD805 for future proofing as well as directly competing to the rumored S5 prime. Regardless...the black/Gray G3 will be mine when it releases!

Dont have my g2 long enough to switch.. Looks really great.. German websites as giga.de or androidpit are excepting an sd805. I think it will be so. An 801 is imo not enough for a 2014 flagship

Looks amazing...
I just bought G2 recently and that's been a blast but heck this G3 takes it to another level...
I want and I want it now! Black or gold plz.
It will fail if it will be sd801 + 2k display... that doesnt make any sense :\ Anyway design is beautiful
This phone will come with S805
Phonearena said S801 is for G3 prototype.
And qualcomm said S805 phone will come at may

if snapdragon 600 can handle FHD, 801 can handle QHD without breaking a sweat. For me a minor frame rate drop wouldn't matter cause I yawn @ gaming.

It looks great in my opinion, I like they keep the volume and power buttons in the back, I have the G2 and I'm very used to that now.

LG stepping up their design, and they are improving their UI too, i think i am going to save some money to get this beauty
