[Q] New to T-mo/Sammy - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello,
I'll soon be an T-Mobile user (SGS3).
I've been with Verizon for almost 13 years and have owned 3 HTC phones. Currently have a Incredible 2.
Is there anything I should know about the network?
How's the speed?
I'm lucky if I hit 2.8 down and .8 up (3G).
What about the phone? Is there any quirks?

It really depends on your location. I hit 15 down and 2up here in vegas, service is pretty good so far but it depends on your location as I said. The phone is just really great you wont be dissapointed

I came from a inc2 to the gs3 and i couldn't be happier, my download speeds in Minneapolis are usually around 22mbps down and 3 mbps up. This phone is amazing. Lots of custom rom's, Perfect for a flashaholic.

have you checked the coverage map on t-mobiles website? Also, I'll throw in the link that will show you the best modem to use in your area on your S3, if you're into flashing. The only problems with this phone ( and all recent samsung products is in past 5 years), were wifi issues(weak signal and wifi calling error) and the audio quality from the camcorder. Both Issues were resolved with the Jelly bean update though. . The audio playback and recording feature is also pretty top notch now. My only complaint that I could find, is that VOODOO Sound app isn't available for our devices...yet. Its coming though!! The S3 is definitely your best choice! There is supposedly another update coming in december or January to 4.2

What's up fellow Driver..the S3 gets great speeds! Depending on location of course. I'm over the road and in most big cities I can get 6-23 mbps dl..in rural towns..I try not to look lol..but it's a good powerful phone and coming from the sensation, mt4g, and the God awful Motorola cliq xt, I'm happy with my first sammy

I'm on the $30/100min/5GB plan, barely went over 500MB in the first month, loving the speed, sometimes spotty here in NYC, better in Brooklyn.

Sprint Gnex 3g speeds

How are those 3g speeds after the update?
How are those LTE speeds for those who can get it lol
No number of software updates are gonna fix Sprint's 3G speeds. That's a network problem.
Agreed. T-Mobile EDGE can at times be faster than Sprint "3g"

Quite regularly EDGE can top Sprint EVDO. It'll lose in uploads and ping often though.
I know that lol
When the gnex just came out it was noticably slower than a sprint galaxy s 2......I was wondering if it improved
And 3g in my area is amazing........during the day I hit 150-200KB/s and at night 250-300KB/s
At my old place I used to only get 30-60KB/s lol

If you're actually getting 150-200KB/s (aka 1200-1600kbps) then that's absolutely fantastic for Sprint 3G... People are used to ~400kbps tops.

To the OP nah... even with the new leaked FG01 radio 3G speeds still pathetic. At least for me others have said they have had great results and a tremendous increase in speeds.

I am hitting those speeds in kilobytes maybe they upgraded the towers here? I know most of the town is sprint......
I was just wanting to know if gnex caught up to eptouch
I tend to get between 25KB and 60KB a second. Once I got 1500Kb/s. That was pretty cool. I remember the days of T-Mobile EDGE though, which would be 3 to 7 KB/s in my area, so I'm quite content.

Bad reception - my phone or sprint?

I know this question may only apply to me, but I've always wondered about the answer.
I've been in sprint for over 10 years and the epic touch is my 3rd android phone. No matter where I am in the country and what modem is have running on my phone, I've always had very poor reception.
I'm at the point of changing phones and providers because the issue is so bad.
Does sprint really still suck or is it my phone?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

IMO, Sprint is not the best carrier for reception in all areas, but they are one of the least expensive considering they still have an unlimited plan. You could change the PRL to roam on other carrier's towers, but if you use too much data you can have your contract cancelled I hear.
Might be your phone /area

Yes, and to get around that $10 fee, it is now called data fee instead of 4G fee. I heard that when they were calling it the 4g fee in areas that did not have 4g there was a class action law suit brewing.
My phone gets similar reception to wife's HTC and friends iPhones on Sprint. Visit a Sprint store that also does service and compare to other phones. Maybe yours has a bad radio?
Maybe I'll bring my phone to test my radio. I travel the nation and am always in a major city (San Francisco, New York, Chicago, etc). As soon as I walk into a building, my reception goes to pretty much zero.
Sounds a bit extreme. Only time I notice reception that bad is walking into one of the walmarts here that must block cell service. I live in a fairly crappy service area too. 97504 if you want to take a look for yourself

Well that's your problem. Concrete + steel beams tend to block out higher end frequencies like 1ghz+ freq's like our 1900mhz cdma & 2.5ghz wimax. No solution to that until you get LTE 800 and CDMA-1x advanced @ 800mgz
I've had 5 phones with Sprint in Minneapolis. My E4GT has the weakest signal of any of them.
Speeds in my area at least seems to be better. 3g speeds/reception at my job went from unusable to being able to stream netflix/youtube vids easily. But yea the E4GT like others have said doesn't have the best built-in radio.

Isn't that Medford,OR? I use to live there. Yes, it is very bad in there. T-Mobile is way worse though. Have you tried T-Mobile service? oh god.
Maybe it's finally time to switch to Verizon or at&t versus just getting a note 2 on sprint. Being the only person without cell reception when I'm with a group of people is getting too lame.

Yep! I have used T-Mobile in the past, and yes, it was even worse haha. Amazingly, they are currently the best here . Verizon will soon be number one though as they just launched lte here yesterday! Sprint has one upgrade planned in the next 6 months...sigh. I've already accepted that wimax won't be coming here. Sucks for clearwire...maybe lte someday
OP do you know anyone else with our phone? I would be interested to know if it is the phone in general or specifically your phone.

I have a feeling Clearwire LTE will arrive in Medford, as clear does operate the 2.5/2.6ghz (not sure which) but only that it was for pre-wimax devices and never got around to updated the towers to the newer wimax system due to money issues, but, at least once clearwire starts updating to LTE towers, just maybe they will remember this cities.

I'm sure it's all area driven. I'm considering switching to TMobile with this Note because the savings are incredible, but the coverage and speed compared to Verizon are absurd no matter where I go. Very disappointing.

I have been in similar situations before. I get 4g full bar but less than 300kpbs near a local shopping plaza. Less than 1/8 mile away I get 12mbps speeds. Go figure. I was testing out on both my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 same time so it is definitely not a phone problem.
I hate to say it, but this phone's speeds just aren't acceptable to me after using LTE. Sounds like a whiny sort of complaint, but spending this much on a superphone..I did about a billion speedtests around eastern MI and it was rare to catch a good 4G signal like they demoed in the store. They also seem to have issues with their signal penetrating buildings. I love the phone, and would love to get away from Verizon and maybe use the new Nexus device too but they aren't there yet for me.

Last night was averaging 29mbps and highest was 31.59mbps in the burbs of Chicago. Yet when I am in Downtown Chicago which supposedly has 42mbps, I only get 5-8mbps.
I travel all over the east coast for work, and know T-Mobiles network inside and out. I travel to small cities as much as big cities, so being able to connect to a network is important. If I were new to T-Mobile, and the Note 2 was my first phone, I'd think T-mobiles network sucked. I have 2 lines, a Sensation I use to mainly to tether with (10gb plan), and my main line the Galaxy Note 2 (unlimited 4g plan). I keep getting a message saying, "not connected to network" in areas where I should definitely be on the edge network, or roaming. The Sensation will be connected on a network when the Note will give the not connected message. My overall speeds in 4g areas are better with the Note than the Sensation, but not in secluded areas.
When the Sensation first came out, it wasn't connecting to T-Mobiles network correctly, then they sent out an update that fixed the problems. My first couple of weeks with the Sensation were hell because of that. Now I'm dealing with it again with the Note 2. I'm hoping that they fixed the data issues in the first ota update, which I hope happens soon.
Here are some speeds I've gotten in the past few days...
Dothan Al - 2.03 mbps
Jacksonville FL suburbs - 17.69
Harrisburg PA - 5.45
Chattanooga TN - 2.31
us231 on FL/AL border - .88
Atlanta 14.81
Jacksonville and Charlotte has better speeds than Philly. I've yet to find a place with over 20mbps

Yeah i live in fort meyer and my coverage is pretty damn good...
My area is rated good to excellent according to T-Mobile, but that obviously is subjective. The step back from LTE just isn't doable for me on a premium device. I'm glad I learned that while i had time to back out. I understand better what a huge sacrifice of tech it is on the Nexus phone now. But I envy those it doesn't impact obviously.
It could always be worse op. I'm currently with sprint but will be switching to tmo in a little while so I've been lurking the forums. I have the nexus, a 4g lte phone and I pay for unlimited data, yet I only average 200kbps on 3g, and Saint Louis will be lucky to see sprint lte by the end of 2013.

Torn. Keep E4GT or get GN2?

I've been due for an upgrade for a few months now, was waiting on the GS3 then heard about the Note 2. I know the Note 2 will be my next phone. The only thing stopping me is lack of LTE coverage in my area.
Major reason for staying with my E4GT is Wimax. I use it to tether at home. Leaving Wimax for 3G on the Note 2 would be a noticeable difference.
Thoughts?
Went from et4g to s3 to note 2 and haven't looked back. The 3g in St Louis is awful but I couldn't pass up the hardware of the other 2 phones. I can use wifi at home and get by with 3g for the time being. My wife's s2 feels like a toy after the other two I have used now.

Haha,
You guys are awesome and I see all of your points. I wonder if I post in the E4GT forum if I'd get different responses.
If I had wifi at my house I would've gone with the GN2 at launch.
I've checked S4gru and apparently Orange County isn't getting LTE until the middle of 2013. That's a long time to wait for someone who runs their internet via tether. I called Sprint a few times and they couldn't give me an answer one way or another when LTE would be lit in my area.
I was in the EXACT same dilemma as you (OP), I was on my old Evo4G and had great Wimax connection and speeds. But after watching all of the videos for the options(software) and hardware I couldn't pass it up. But then again I know that LTE is coming to my area within a month and a half. But regardless after picking up this device I am sooo happy I did, even with 3g which internet surfing is fine on really I just use the multiple page loader in the browser(tabs basically) and i have a few pages open and switch between them while surfing. Ex) open two on XDA then maybe one on PA another on AA and maybe another on TB (phonearena, technoBuffalo,AndroidAuthority) along with other sites after changing. Then just click a link on one after reading an article or thread then flip to the next which has the page loaded already(which loaded while I was reading my previous thread or article). And you don't even notice the difference with that method. Not to mention the 3g isn't all that bad anyways nowadays. Yes compared to 4g it is horrible but hey.
In short YES upgrade. if you dont want to take a good hour to 2 to get it setup at home with 3g which I did and it wasn't bad at all. I am speaking of using the Play market and downloading all the apps you want, then maybe stop at a Wi-fi hotspot and piggyback. hit a Mcdonald's or Starbucks.
I sure hope when the LTE hits here in my area it is comparable to AT&T the speeds on the tablet in my household connected to that is crazy fast. 42mb/s - 48mb/s
Orange County CA? LTE is due in Riverside in April....and i know the OC started before Riverside.

How do you know this?
Yup. OC, CA. April is 6 months away.
And let me play devils advocate for a sec: What good is this phone if Internet is so slow it's almost unusable (at times).
To the OP simply_Dave and the poster above me, you guys know you are looking at the "Launch date" for Orange County which is April. The launch date is when it is roughly 45-50% completed, chances are if you live in a populated area of OC you could be using the LTE market much before. Basically how is works is you can pick up signal much before the date but if you are having spotty coverage or issues dont complain cause they haven't "launched" it yet. But you know your city, Like for instance in mine on a map our City covers roughly a 25mile diameter each way from downtown, but my actual address and location is literally within the actual city. So when they start work in my City in December I will theoretically have 4gLTE fairly quickly(which has also been verified by acquaintances at Sprint). Although my city doesn't Officially "Launch" until June 2013.
I'm stoked though cause I have a Sprint tower that is scheduled for an LTE upgrade within a 1/4mile of my house!!

S4Gru.com
People have already seen many crews beggining work all around us. A few weeks ago my service was horrible, and a tower was down (my guess is due to matinence). But like I said, I am pretty sure OC is due to release prior to us in Riverside, but check that site for when it is expected to drop...I will see if I can find the link to the specific completion rate for you and post it here when I find it.
The Administrator on S4Gru.com seems to believe LTE will launch in the OC in Q1 of 2013....that is if you do not live in Brea, Yorba Linda, or Placentia.
That's great news! Thanks for the look up. Maybe I should make the jump. I just ordered a bunch of new cases for my E4GT too. Haha.
I'm in the same position. I use 4G tether on my E4GT *all the time*. Wimax speeds for me are 6-8Mb during the day, 8-10Mb during the night. I just bought a new Anker battery for the E4GT and i love the screen brightness, etc., but especially the speeds with my tablet. What makes it worse is that i have the Note 10.1 with quad core 1.4 with 2GB and i know how good this tablet is, i only expect wonderous things from the Note 2 consdering it's a higher spec'd processor with near same specs.
At this point, i think it's safe to assume not to go with GS3 - even with the Best buy deals coming up. I *would* suggest waiting 2-3 weeks though....if you are thinking of upgrading. It looks to be a great phone with great battery and great screen and great camera. I'm not sure there isn't something great about this phone, honestly, but that's still to be said about radio reception because i had to recently get rid of my GS3 because it was a worse radio than my E4GT - off topic, i know, so back on topic - wait 2-3 weeks if you must get this (and if you love samsung, you MUSTget this) i would keep the E4GT around though - for those times you want to SWAP back to use your tether through sprint.com/activate website. Enjoy...
I moved from the E4GT to the GN2 and I live in an area that has wimax and lte
The sprint LTE speeds for me are:
About the same download as WIMAX for me 6-10 mb/s
faster upload speeds, Wimax is capped at around 1 mb/s my LTE has gotten anywhere from 2-4 mb/s
(No these are not anywhere near the crazy att and verizon lte speeds but still very usable)
Ping times are faster for me on LTE than they were on wimax
ability to hold the connection seems better for me on lte. It used to drop for me with wimax causing downloads to error, streaming music to stop etc.
As long as i stay in coverage area my connection seems pretty stable on lte.
As far as everything else there is pretty much nothing not to love. I look around my apartment and wonder why I have so many charging cables laying around now since now i just plug it in every day or two or three.
Phone wise, I also made the switch from the ET4G and its like night and day. Longer battery and better all around phone (I also have a Note tablet...)
Since your using it as your internet makes it a tougher decision.
I gave up having Wimax in the hope to have LTE in the near future.
For now I use my 40mbs WiFi and I have about 1.75mbs 3G at my home address.
Meh, think I'm going to keep my phone with wimax. I tried living with internet at 3G and just couldn't do it. I didn't go for more then 10 mins before getting frustrated and turning on Wimax. :/
One reason to get the note

I'm sure you know that tethering is not yet working on GN2. I have seen one report of bluetooth based tethering working but a no go for me. If your area isn't getting lte for while there's no upside to the GN2. It's a great phone mind you but no tethering for the time being.

destroid my dink2

Ran over it with a forklift, probably more that once, should I buy another or something different?
I really loved this phone. :crying:
Definitely something else. This is pretty outdated now.

If it works why fix it, this phone was great, I was still running Andis rom, everything worked and some, so I had no reason to get a better phone considering that the service around here has not gotten any better.

Because with a new phone might come better reception as well. Even though no network is really running true 4g coverage yet. These old Dincs are outdated
I agree with the rest. I love my dinc2, but at the end of the day it is getting more and more noticable that it is slowing down and becoming laggier with each new rom flash. Its just old. I'm going to keep mine as long as it lasts or until some great nexus (with 4G) comes out.

Semi off topic, but why do you say no network is running true 4g? You don't consider Verizon LTE to be 4g? Just curious.

Because he is saying that we aren't always on 4g and shift to 3g so we aren't on true 4g speeds all the time as how we would be on 3g.

I guess, but if that's the definition, then no carrier ever achieved true 3g...Out here in the west my phone still reverts to 1x at times.

Well maybe certain areas I've never had 1x in my area although I do transition from 4g to 3g from time to time.

Some networks claim to be 4G and all that, but their "advanced network" doesnt go coast to coast and still in spots you only get 3g coverage, Like here in Sacramento there are places my old Dinc2 is faster than "4G" phones on Verizons LTE. Also Some run just a boosted 3G network slap the 4G sticker on it and charge more and cut out our awesome unlimited plans in the pursuit of more money.

I don't think I've checked on my S3, but on my Inc2 I got 1x at my house. I know I can get LTE on my S3, but only if I'm on the second level in just the right corner.
To the OP, honestly, why get another Inc2? Even if you don't have 4G coverage in your area right now, Verizon is aiming to almost fully shadow their current 3G map with their LTE network by the end of the year. Now, knowing Verizon, that probably won't actually happen. But even if they get 75% of their 3G area covered with 4G as well, I see no valid reason to limit yourself with a 3G-only device.
And beyond that, the Inc2 is now an old device, relatively speaking. It's a single-core processor that even if overclocked and running smooth as silk, still has nowhere near the processor of more modern devices.
