Torn. Keep E4GT or get GN2? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I've been due for an upgrade for a few months now, was waiting on the GS3 then heard about the Note 2. I know the Note 2 will be my next phone. The only thing stopping me is lack of LTE coverage in my area.
Major reason for staying with my E4GT is Wimax. I use it to tether at home. Leaving Wimax for 3G on the Note 2 would be a noticeable difference.
Thoughts?

Went from et4g to s3 to note 2 and haven't looked back. The 3g in St Louis is awful but I couldn't pass up the hardware of the other 2 phones. I can use wifi at home and get by with 3g for the time being. My wife's s2 feels like a toy after the other two I have used now.

I changed on release day. It's so awesome that I can't even describe how much better the phone is.

Haha,
You guys are awesome and I see all of your points. I wonder if I post in the E4GT forum if I'd get different responses.
If I had wifi at my house I would've gone with the GN2 at launch.
I've checked S4gru and apparently Orange County isn't getting LTE until the middle of 2013. That's a long time to wait for someone who runs their internet via tether. I called Sprint a few times and they couldn't give me an answer one way or another when LTE would be lit in my area.

I was in the EXACT same dilemma as you (OP), I was on my old Evo4G and had great Wimax connection and speeds. But after watching all of the videos for the options(software) and hardware I couldn't pass it up. But then again I know that LTE is coming to my area within a month and a half. But regardless after picking up this device I am sooo happy I did, even with 3g which internet surfing is fine on really I just use the multiple page loader in the browser(tabs basically) and i have a few pages open and switch between them while surfing. Ex) open two on XDA then maybe one on PA another on AA and maybe another on TB (phonearena, technoBuffalo,AndroidAuthority) along with other sites after changing. Then just click a link on one after reading an article or thread then flip to the next which has the page loaded already(which loaded while I was reading my previous thread or article). And you don't even notice the difference with that method. Not to mention the 3g isn't all that bad anyways nowadays. Yes compared to 4g it is horrible but hey.
In short YES upgrade. if you dont want to take a good hour to 2 to get it setup at home with 3g which I did and it wasn't bad at all. I am speaking of using the Play market and downloading all the apps you want, then maybe stop at a Wi-fi hotspot and piggyback. hit a Mcdonald's or Starbucks.
I sure hope when the LTE hits here in my area it is comparable to AT&T the speeds on the tablet in my household connected to that is crazy fast. 42mb/s - 48mb/s

How do you know this?
Yup. OC, CA. April is 6 months away.
And let me play devils advocate for a sec: What good is this phone if Internet is so slow it's almost unusable (at times).

To the OP simply_Dave and the poster above me, you guys know you are looking at the "Launch date" for Orange County which is April. The launch date is when it is roughly 45-50% completed, chances are if you live in a populated area of OC you could be using the LTE market much before. Basically how is works is you can pick up signal much before the date but if you are having spotty coverage or issues dont complain cause they haven't "launched" it yet. But you know your city, Like for instance in mine on a map our City covers roughly a 25mile diameter each way from downtown, but my actual address and location is literally within the actual city. So when they start work in my City in December I will theoretically have 4gLTE fairly quickly(which has also been verified by acquaintances at Sprint). Although my city doesn't Officially "Launch" until June 2013.
I'm stoked though cause I have a Sprint tower that is scheduled for an LTE upgrade within a 1/4mile of my house!!

S4Gru.com
People have already seen many crews beggining work all around us. A few weeks ago my service was horrible, and a tower was down (my guess is due to matinence). But like I said, I am pretty sure OC is due to release prior to us in Riverside, but check that site for when it is expected to drop...I will see if I can find the link to the specific completion rate for you and post it here when I find it.

The Administrator on S4Gru.com seems to believe LTE will launch in the OC in Q1 of 2013....that is if you do not live in Brea, Yorba Linda, or Placentia.

That's great news! Thanks for the look up. Maybe I should make the jump. I just ordered a bunch of new cases for my E4GT too. Haha.

I'm in the same position. I use 4G tether on my E4GT *all the time*. Wimax speeds for me are 6-8Mb during the day, 8-10Mb during the night. I just bought a new Anker battery for the E4GT and i love the screen brightness, etc., but especially the speeds with my tablet. What makes it worse is that i have the Note 10.1 with quad core 1.4 with 2GB and i know how good this tablet is, i only expect wonderous things from the Note 2 consdering it's a higher spec'd processor with near same specs.
At this point, i think it's safe to assume not to go with GS3 - even with the Best buy deals coming up. I *would* suggest waiting 2-3 weeks though....if you are thinking of upgrading. It looks to be a great phone with great battery and great screen and great camera. I'm not sure there isn't something great about this phone, honestly, but that's still to be said about radio reception because i had to recently get rid of my GS3 because it was a worse radio than my E4GT - off topic, i know, so back on topic - wait 2-3 weeks if you must get this (and if you love samsung, you MUSTget this) i would keep the E4GT around though - for those times you want to SWAP back to use your tether through sprint.com/activate website. Enjoy...

I moved from the E4GT to the GN2 and I live in an area that has wimax and lte
The sprint LTE speeds for me are:
About the same download as WIMAX for me 6-10 mb/s
faster upload speeds, Wimax is capped at around 1 mb/s my LTE has gotten anywhere from 2-4 mb/s
(No these are not anywhere near the crazy att and verizon lte speeds but still very usable)
Ping times are faster for me on LTE than they were on wimax
ability to hold the connection seems better for me on lte. It used to drop for me with wimax causing downloads to error, streaming music to stop etc.
As long as i stay in coverage area my connection seems pretty stable on lte.
As far as everything else there is pretty much nothing not to love. I look around my apartment and wonder why I have so many charging cables laying around now since now i just plug it in every day or two or three.

Phone wise, I also made the switch from the ET4G and its like night and day. Longer battery and better all around phone (I also have a Note tablet...)
Since your using it as your internet makes it a tougher decision.
I gave up having Wimax in the hope to have LTE in the near future.
For now I use my 40mbs WiFi and I have about 1.75mbs 3G at my home address.

Meh, think I'm going to keep my phone with wimax. I tried living with internet at 3G and just couldn't do it. I didn't go for more then 10 mins before getting frustrated and turning on Wimax. :/

One reason to get the note
.:Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Note II:.

I'm sure you know that tethering is not yet working on GN2. I have seen one report of bluetooth based tethering working but a no go for me. If your area isn't getting lte for while there's no upside to the GN2. It's a great phone mind you but no tethering for the time being.

Sprint service quality, is this normal?

I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.
Its all over thats why im switching to verizon. The worst thing is the reps act like nothings wrong

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

When I go within 100ft of the tower I use in my home in Toledo I get full signal strength and peek speeds of 100 kbps, sprint really needs to get on that. Then again in Cleveland I get 1mbit+.
Sprints network is really unstable right now so its probably not the best time to sign a contract with them if you use a lot of data.

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.
I live in NW Indiana as well and this is how it normally is

I was up in Michigan City last month for 4 days (Mother in Law and Wife's Grandma live there) and was in and around Hammond and Valpo as well. I got much better speeds than that with my EG4T. The 3G in MC was actually superior to the 3G down here in DFW, although they don't seem to have 4G...
I was running Caulkin's 1.0 at the time, and it was pretty nice up there.

Epic No G touch.

So, I went with sprint because of the truly unlimited data plan, and this phone. I love my phone, I love the great development community we have, great ROMs. Everything about the phone is great. But I am extremely annoyed with Sprints data service. When I bought the phone I was aware there wasn't 4G in my area worth mentioning, I figured 3G would be fine. Well its not. Average speed test scores of 56 kbps. Abysmal. I had also assumed at some point, slowly the 4G would improve as they added towers. Now Sprint has decided to roll with LTE instead. Probably a smart choice but I feel like I have been screwed over. metro Detroit has some of the slowest 3G there is. So of sprint rolls out LYE this year are we gonna have to riot in the streets or do you think they plan to work with people contracted into WiMax phones?

Detroit did suck for 3g speeds while I was there over xmas. However Sprint going LTE could also help 3G users since the towers in general are being upgraded the 3G data speeds should also get better.
saw a few ppl in detroit today with increased speeds.. nv is coming.
I was going to mention the same thing. As the towers get upgrades to LTE they also should be getting capacity upgrades to help 3G as well.
One thing to remember is that this will take time. WiMax will not go away over night. Im sure they will support WiMax for 2-4 years from now. GIving everyone time to outgrow their current WiMax device and upgrade to a LTE device.
Well in Reno Nevada we've been waiting on 4g for months and my 3g is worse. Through out most of the city I get maybe 5-10 kbs. At one point I had about 30 but still that's ridiculous Ive also tried very close to several towers and still same speeds sprint sucks with their 3g and 4g. Verizon has it out here but unwanted true unlimited. We should riot in the streets

GSIII LTE/Sprint

That's right I am on Sprint with no LTE, and I have a Photon. I plan on picking up a GSIII Sunday in a Sprint store. This may sound crazy to some of you, but for me it makes perfect sense. I don't get Wimax inside my home, but can get it outside sometimes here in the Bronx, NYC. I tried and liked the weight feel, and fluidity of the EVO 4G LTE. After researching it seems like the SGIII may be the phone to get based on over all performance and software enhancements. I have also experienced 1.5 mbs up and down on 3G in this area, and feel we will have LTE soon.
After using the EVO LTE "I am compelled to ditch" my trusty Photon for a GSIII. I do this for the software fluidity, and multimedia enhancements as well. I use my phone mostly for calling and rarely use Wimax unless I am out in the city any way. When NYC is lit up with LTE I will have unlimited data, and a great phone until this happens. If I want a better phone at the years end I will sell this for only a Galaxy Nexus and add to a second line! My last Premier upgrade is July 1, 2012.
When I factor in the fact that S4GRU reports that NYC will be lit up by October, and my upgrade is due now I decided not to wait and push my 2014 upgrade back until October. Also the fact that Sprint's service suffices enough for me to stay for the unlimited data, and LTE at an affordable rate. a win win scenario "for me"! I know that Sprint has already broadcast that they will light up the LTE in the 4-5 1st round major markets July 15th 2012.
I had phone phone (evo lte and GS3) Evo lte even tho is only a month old got a lot development going for it already, GS3 none really but no one almost has it yet, on performance I see both phones as fast, but the multitasking is so much better on GS3, is more like the galaxy nexus, it keeps apps in background for the longest and the screen is better on the evo lte, speaker is louder on gs3 but for some reason clarity goes to the evo lte, on network part I do not have any idea because I switch carriers because slow speeds my GS3 is on tmobile and even tho I like the phone now, I always wanted my Evo lte on tmobile cause it is a great phone... I went to the Sprint store 10:00 am Sunday morning to get my unit. The antenna on this phone is pretty darn good. It isn't too far removed from the Photo that I have. I compare signal -dbm strength and they are literally within -2 dbms and most times the very same -dbm and signal strength in poor reception areas.
After it discharged the 1st hour because of app down loads and updates from my SD card it went 10.5 hours under mild use 15% talk 35% screen time, listening to music. The phone looks way better in person and feels nice to hold. It is a bit slippery though.
I was leary of Samsung's phone after othe r issues kept flaring up in the GNEX, and SGII CDMA phones in the US. The GPS seems to lock on effortlessly, and the antenna signal is excellent for me so far. In my home signal from sprint is weak down stairs on the lower level and it received the same -dbm and bar strength as my Photon.
Phone calls are clear, and most importantly my Blue tooth's/Blue Ant T1/Q2 doesn't keep seem to disconnect sporadically as it did before.
Don't be afraid to get this phone.....This or the EVO LTE are both great phones and it's user choice in my opinion. So far I am happy that I bought this product!
I was also able to achieve 1.92 mbs down, and 1096 kbps upload on 3G here in the Bronx NYC near the Throggsneck Bridge! Network vision is a coming LTE I am waiting ok! I feel confident I will be basking in LTE signal very soon. S4RGU reports NYC market should be live by October.
If I can get 1.92mbs down all the time until then I'd be a happy camper for now!

You must switch from Tmobile Avatar to Sprint.lol I posted this information for people like your self in NYC, and also for people that want to know about antenna signal. I am very pleased about antenna RF reception, and GPS signal. I am only wishing that I could have got it for 149.00 from radio shack. They didn't know when they would get it, and I figured with Apple trying to ban every thing I better get one before supplies die out!

Does anyone actually give a F**k about 4g who doesnt live in the U.S

Isnt hspa+ good enough. I mean it might be just me but im on wifi unless im at school where i dont even use it that much
You are right.
WiFi and 3G is enough for me.. I'm in school and sometimes I use wifi on school and sometimes 3G when I check xda forum news or when I check FB...
I have actually never used 4G and I don't need it.
I'm in the UK, and I don't care particularly.
It's only just launched here this week, and even then it's only in a few major cities (none of which I live in or visit often). Hell, I barely get 3G indoors in my own town. I'm generally either at home, at work, or in coffee shops/bars, all of which have WiFi.
On top of that, the cheapest 4G offering (bit under £40/m) only gives you 500Mb, at which point you lose access until you buy more (no, it doesn't just slow down). Which makes it pointless. You'd burn through your allowance in just a few minutes if you used it for all the funky stuff they say it's for "Hey, watch HD video on your phone!"
Until it's cheap and essentially unlimited, it's not for me...
For normal web surfing, 1.8Mbps is good enough for me.

I'm in Australia, we have ****ty ADSL... for giggles i was in a Telstra store (carrier with 4g) they had some HTC something or over on the demo bench. I loaded speed test and just started giggling to myself.
The thing was hitting 36-39Mbps down and 19-29Mbps up.
I sat there and just hit retest a few times as i trued to muffle the fits of laughter i was experiencing by all this power in my hands.
For comparison. I'm getting 7Mpbs down and 0.5, to 1Mpbs up on my land line ADLS2 connection.. of which im paying $60 a month for unlimited Data.
I Care about LTE
Ill give a F**k when Vodafone and 02 start broadcasting 4G (which i think is next summer). Until then i dont care. 3G here in the UK is as fast as 4G in the states. And i cant wait to get my Nexus 4.
4G is a good thing that needs to come to Australia, but I don't think it will be widely available for another few years. Telstra and Optus really want to keep the monopoly on it and charge outlandish fees.
Will be nice when it finally replaces 3G and becomes standard though. My internet is slow as balls.
Not going to happen soon, maybe a few more years after LTE matures.
Why would people care about something they don't have? I didn't give a hoot about 4G until I actually used it and once you see how much of a difference it makes in everyday usage you will want it too. I will, although, be much more impressed with it when it doesn't eat my battery like the cookie monster with a cookie cake.
LTE is pretty damn awesome. I live in South Korea, and my wife's Optimus LTE2 absolutely blazes. The 3g on my Gnex is fine for all intents and purposes (honestly - I don't download anything large enough on the phone to make the speed a killer difference), but if you've got LTE then it is truly fantastic.

I get H+ with my network and unlimited tether able data, and its perfectly fine for anything I throw at it, even hardcore online gaming. At the prices 4G is at here in the UK, coupled with the fact it doesn't reach indoors (well the crappy 4G from EE doesn't, I realise the 800mhz band one will) means that I have zero interest at all ATM.

I've come to the conclusion that people that can't have a certain technology try to justify their lack of need for it. When that isn't enough for them, they make polls or threads trying to get everyone else to see their way.
I see it time and again in these threads.
VZW LTE is great! their 3g is horrific and brings tears to my eyes. Such a roller coaster ride with VZW's data. I'm thinking that I might like the more consistent speeds of t-mobile's HSPA+ here in Houston. My VZW GN is my work phone so it will suck having to take on a cell plan again but it'll only be the 30 dollar pre-paid so it won't be too bad and I could always stop service at any time. Now I'm thinking if i get the N4 maybe i'll just stick the VZW sim into a novatel mifi for a mobile hotspot.

I shouldn't get it, but my inner geek is pushing me to.

[Q] Tmobile 4G LTE 2013 Questions

Hey forum I have a few questions. I searched the question already but couldnt find any relating threads. I was reading through Flipboard earlier today and saw that T-Mobile will be turning on 4g LTE in about a week or two. I also read that they will be releasing a 4G LTE supported GS3. its really unfair but, that brings me on to my question, Since our Galaxy SIII arent capable of 4G LTE as is will someone work on flashing them so we can have LTE instead of having to buy a new device? Or are we stuck with having to buy either the new SIII, iPhone 5 or Note 2? thanks
Have to buy the new enhanced galaxy s3 with 4G LTE compatibility and in which the LTE enable comes in a new software update

Its really pointless to get a LTE phone right now. It doesnt matter what carrier you have...LTE is only live in a few markets...look how long it took to get 4G....and even now 4G is still not available is some areas. By the time your 2 year contract is up...if your currently on the GS3...then look at purchasing a LTE phone.

Unfortunately, we've been screwed. I'm willing to bet on it that our current handsets won't work and in a place in NYC where LTE is everywhere it's really a shame for someone like me.
They should at least have some type of upgrade program like if you're on contract with an original S3 you can turn it in and pay like $50 or $100 or something like that and get one with LTE.
Not a big deal since im already getting 22 megs down in parts of Denver which is fast enough for me
I just got a sIII a little more than a month ago and I'm good with my non lte version. I'm totally happy with a device on a fairly mature and built out hspa+ network. The lte version will probably cost more and the tmo lte network is in its infancy with little to no footprint. I'll wait on lte til my next upgrade cycle.

If you are getting speeds over 8-10mbs and over 1 up then don't see what the issue is and why people feel the need for LTE right now.
Its a battery hog and hardly around.
I am in a spotty 4g section at work and get 3 down and under 1 up and still content...I can download movies from Netflix just fine. Pages load fast....and that is in a bad area.
At home or most other areas I am in the 20s down and 2 up.
For me, I have no need for it, unless they fix the battery hog issues.
It will be sometime before it hits smaller cities anyway.

Don't see a point in changing phones right now just because LTE... for me, 15mbps download is more than enough for current applications and usage. I rather have an unlimited/uncapped plan that allows me to use 15mbps all the time.
Do not get the Iphone 5 or note 2.
Wait About 4 months and get the new s4 which I'm sure will be equipped with lte, and by that time tmo lte will be more stable then in about 2 weeks.
My average down speed is around 13-16 and upload is around 1.7-2, so I am in no rush to have lte.

I loved being able to do a speed test against the LTE Verizon S3 and beat the pants off it in a Verizon building. Something to be said for a more mature tech.
