[Q] Battery worse after JB update? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Has anyone else noticed that battery is MUCH worse after the jellybean update? I lose like 1% every minute...and 1% every 5 minutes in standby. I'm temped to do a factory reset but I don't want to lose all my apps....any one else have this issue?

Probably an app causing it, it will be better factory reset then just installing app by app and see what's causing the battery drain.
Sent from my SGH-T999

You should actually give it 72 hours. You just flashed the ota. Its going to take time to catch up. Just like flashing a ROM. Its better to flash when you're at 100% than 50%.

This has been very common with all jb builds. Youre best bet is factory reset and do not restore data.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

I notice the same thing. I did a factory reset and it didn't help. Next I tried Odin the Jelly Bean factory image. That didn't help either.
My battery drain is pretty bad.

Since I got the new update I haven't downloaded any new apps :/ but then again it could be an app not supported by Jellybean yet...

Mine was great today, listened to music for 3 hours straight while using XDA and texting. Worked in a building with no signal for T-Mobile, had WiFi calling on got off work and played bike race for 2 hours lol, phone was at 30% after 9 hours of super heavy usage, screen time at 2.3 hours, low cause of the game and listening to music.(lost 4% in 2 hours that I didn't use the phone) then plugged in to charge/flash rom. I'm expecting battery to only get better with root and things tweaked now. Will report back tomorrow after some more testing.

Usually with the power button. I have it set to time out at 1 min. 30 seconds it just kept turning off before I even finished reading stuff!

Ok, now thats strange! Did you wipe batt stats? or Dalvik or Data? Im assuming you are on the new JB build?

Yes, on the new JB. Haven't done anything since flash. Just looked in there when I saw the battery life complaint.

Ok, everything should come back shortly. It is rebuilding the stats as you go and since you wiped em, theres nothing to report there for now. Not a big deal though

I guess I should have worded that better. I did not reset any of my caches. I flashed then charged the phone.
The refresh at the top right does nothing either. Time is stuck

Hmm ok. Back to being strange again!
Id suggest wiping battstats then.
Are you rooted?
Easiest way is to delete /data/sysyem/battstats.bin
Then reboot and give it at least 10 mins. Hopefully thatll trigger it to run correctly.

Recharging above 90% will also reset battstats. After your next charge, turn off the phone before unplugging. Then unplug and reboot.

This only happens with the FB17 kernel and I believe it happens when the kernel starts going at 100% usage then it dumps.

Yes seriously I know that alot of people have been having issues with the building and modem but this is the only problem I'm having. In fact for some reason this modem has helped me get better signal in my house, where I almost always was roaming. Now since I put it on my phone I only have roamed for maybe 20 minutes when I was literally in the middle of nowhere.

You can use the FB15 modem on any rom, you don't have to have the unreleased ICS to use it. (I'm using it just fine on a stock build)
All I'm saying is, is it worth the risk to your business to be using pre-release OS on a phone you need to work 100% for work? This is the primary reason I've not installed it yet. I have to have 100% working.
Same happen to me on rooted FB17. I let it do it's thing and reboot automatically. I didn't see any issues or data loss. I wasn't too worried. I am sure it isn't a good thing but I don't know if it is a bad thing either.

Go Back to EL29 and keep using the FB15 modem and your problem is solved. If you are THAT worried it is going to happen on something important then you should really NOT be messing with Alpha builds at all. That or also doing a bit more reading and understanding that we do have the choice of running Modems that are either older or Newer then the current build of Android we run is something you can do and still be safe. I get it's the one problem you are having but at the same time this is Alpha software you are using it does have problems. Swap back to a GB build keep your modem and be happy for awhile longer till things are better.

OTA Jelly Bean Poor Performance.

Hi guys, I previously had an EVO LTE, and an Epic 4GT when I was Sprint but picked this device up when I changed carriers several weeks ago and haven't had the chance to root it yet, so my SGIII is 100% stock.
After downloading and installing the OTA update two days ago, two factory resets, and wiping my SD card multiple times the device is still noticeably more sluggish than it was when it was running 4.0.4. I was under the impression that Jelly Bean would speed up the device, not bog it down, is anyone else experiencing similar issues?

I've noticed this before, and I'm puzzled - how come everyone here has so much of their battery consumed by "android system"?
On my S3, "Cell standby" is always by far the biggest drain - mine is currently showing 54% on Cell Standby and the next by rank are Screen at 18% and Andriod System at 13%.
Ok, it does vary a bit with the pattern of usage, but I've never seen battery stats on my phone with Cell Standby at less than 50%. I use the phone a fair amount and usually get close to 2 days on a charge.

It won't change the battery life but it will correct what is really using the battery. Samsung made a little goof. Cell standby is reporting 10 times higher than it should. Divide by ten to get the real usage number or apply the fix.

[Q] fk23 battery issues resolved?

ive seen many people having the battery issue with the fk23 update. i myself have noticed a significant battery loss for my E4GT, normally on the fi27 update id range a day and some odd hours of battery life. but up until recently ive notice that i can barely get 4 hours of use then dead. which sucks because i have the 2430 mah gold battery and i can listen to music for about an hour and drop only 1%. now i unplug my phone set it down get ready for work and its already down 5% any help?

I think the battery issue is isolated cases, and not necessarily a JB issue.I'm currently at 17% after a little more than 24 hrs with plenty of screen time.

+1 I'm getting great battery life out of mine. BTW, which version are you using? I'm on Dan's rooted deodexed zip.
I'm using the one-click that was posted a couple of days ago. Last night prior to going to bed, I had 54% charge left after 16 hours of use. Granted, I have few "aftermarket" apps installed. Although I have Facebook installed, my device is primarily used for email and SMS messaging. I was on Wifi most of the day with about 3 hours of 3G service while away from the house.

I used Titanium to freeze most of the bloatware. I think you've got a corrupted flash.
Do you have gsam or better battery stats installed? See what's burning up cycles.
By the way. Still on the same charge, still have 10% left at over 25 hrs and over 3 hrs screen time.

Well my battery life is amazing. I'm using the stock battery and not using any scripts or anything.
However I did turn off data when I went to bed. But during the day when the phone is sleeping (with data on) it normally drops 1~2% per hour, still a lot better than other custom JB roms even with scripts.

Where can I find info / details on each bloatware app in the system app folder and which ones I can safely delete? My understanding is that some of the app apk files have changed between GB and JB and I don't want to delete any that are essential to the operating system.

Battery Guru for snapdragons

Have any of you used this app? I think it's worth at least trying out. I've been using it now for a few days and it seems to have helped increase my battery life. A lot of times before I would get about 2.5 hrs of screen time and now I've noticed I've been getting almost 3.5 hrs...almost, but still good improvement nonetheless.
*It goes into learning mode for about 2-3 days before actually starts helping save battery.

Been using it for two days, after initial 2 days learning, and for me it has increased my battery life by a ridiculous amount. I work in an area with little to no service and my phone is almost always searching. I would unplugmy found around 5 am and would be at 30-40% by noon. Apon checking my phone for the past two days its been at about 75%. So I love it!!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yeah usually I don't really believe in apps claiming to save battery now because none of them ever really worked for me. But this app is made for phones specifically using snapdragon processors and actually works, pretty damn good too.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
It must have gotten better from when it first launched because it absolutely DECIMATED my battery life in the first versions! Maybe I'll try it again.
Admittedly, I'm running root66 MD5 and I'm getting the best battery life I've ever gotten without undervolting and the ROM has been extremely stable for me so I'm sticking with it for now... maybe my constant ROM flipping was messing up the app. I'll give it another shot.
I tried it for a week and it wasn't even doing anything at all...

Hmm...that's odd, works pretty well for me. Well if battery doctor helps you save more battery then keep using it. Just out of curiosity how much battery life do you get with using battery doctor?

Battery Guru has been "learning my device" for 3 days now and it says I have 6 hours until battery savings begin. I'll let everybody know how it goes.

To be honest, I haven't noticed really any difference. I'll get some screenshots later tonight if you'd like, but overall, if there were any battery savings, they have been minimal. Notice my screen-on time in the original screenshot. I really am not a power user. I only ever have to charge my battery during the day if I've been gaming on it or if I have a rogue app chewing up battery. I usually go 12-14 hours and have 25-30% left with less than 2 hours screen-on time. I don't use task killers, however I reboot my phone daily before I pull it off the charger.

Q & a for roms by oblikas...

I have created this thread for all the questions you guys may have for Roms that are created by my good friend Oblikas. That way the actual Dev section will be clean...
Post away...

I'm having some battery drain running any 4.3 ROM. Checked better battery stats. It said suspend back off under kernel wake lock and that WiFi running was at 100%. Any ideas at why this process won't shut off despite WiFi itself being off?

Also I want to clean my phone and start with a fresh slate of a phone only running 4.3. Will doing any certain wipe achieve this? I always do the factory reset wipe with twrp before flashing any ROM. But I want to clean out all junk files from previous Roms.

Try a reflash and I recommend always doing a full wipe when installing any Roms.

Can you explain what you mean by full wipe? I am always hesitant because I am not sure if I could remove root or my recovery if I do the wrong wipe. I toggled WiFi on and off then restarted the phone and it seems to have fixed it but I will reflash soon anyway to get a fresh phone with no left overs.

Yeah no problem...
Full wipe includes System, Data, Cache, and Dalvicke(spell check) Cache. I also recommend wiping the Internal SDcard as well because of left over data from different Roms. Becareful though when wiping Internal, that your Rom zip is on the external SDcard so that you don't get stuck in recovery without a Rom to flash.
If you're using TWRP everything needing to be wiped will be under Wipe>advanced wipe... Do not wipe you external sd!!!
Hopefully that helps...Let me know if you need anything else.
Ok on the carbon rom someone said you could flash the slim gapps so that you would have the complete dark mode and the only problem I'm having with that is the keyboard will not swipe type it shows the gesture trail but doesn't actually type anything

Correction: I think its because of the slim gapps. I flash pa gapps and I can swipe.

I'm getting great battery life on Carbon, stock is the best but I cannot complain. I turned off all FB and Hangouts notifications and my battery time went way up! Make sure you don't have a ton of apps pushing data.

Compatibility with F240 models?
As I understand none of these ROMs flash a modem, right?

What modem do you have? Also check to make sure touch sound isn't turned on. That will give you major wake locks and drain your battery.
I'm going on 15hours with music playing all day and I still have 35% left. 2hours onscreen time.

Look at the 3rd post on the ROM page and make sure you follow those instructions...it takes away a lot of demons.
Google...Yahoo...Bing...and even XDA all have a search function...USE IT.
Do I need to flash another modem I thought about that but the op did not say to. Everything else is running perfect the voice calls seems to be what's draing it
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda app-developers app
The ROM does not alter the modem, just run the original modem in madmacks cm.

Flashing Carbon Rom Nightlies
I know it's definitely not recommended when changing ROMs but if I'm just flashing a new version of Carbon or any updated ROM can I dirty flash over the same rom? I've been a flashaholic since the walls came down with glorious LGOG Pro ROMs. I'd like to settle in and not have to input information and re-set up the phone every 8 hours. Thanks ^_^
We had one tester dirty flash, he said no issues arose but the nightly did not have a lot of commits. Hope that helps
