Great Accessory for your EVO

I just bought a 2010 G37x it is fully loaded with bluetooth, navigation, sunroof, the works. Normally the bluetooth in cars are just for voice to talk handsfree, Not this car. When the salesman ran down the features with me he said that it can stream your music Pandora, Last.FM, Slacker , or what ever your favorite music you stream right to the stereo with no wires attached. You can also control it with the controls on the stearing wheel (Safety). I must say this is one of the best acceseroies I got for my EVO (and for me). I drive a lot so I love listening to something different this is the best way to go.

LOL , no 30% discount code but if you have USAA banking their car buying program will help you negotiate the car price. The program puts the car at invoice price which is about $5k under MSRP. Thats pretty good discount

I have a Pioneer z110bt in my Solstice and I think I can stream music, not sure about Pandora. I would LOVE that option. I'm getting tired of the repetitiveness of XM. But, your new accessory!

Any of the fully bluetooth integrated car systems would be good.
I have a 2010 Mazda 3 with all the upgrades and it works wonderfully with the EVO. It is soo much better than my iPhone was that it is almost shocking.
Suggestion: use Meridian as the MP3 player and encode at 320k with Joint Stereo (lame or Frau encoder). That way, you will get a pure MP3 stream and playback with the Car Stereo DAC doing most of the work. Most car audio systems (even component ones) don't really warrant the use of FLAC files.
Would be lovely if we could get some working USB host with drivers for use with many popular aftermarket USB touch displays and use some USB->spdif/i2c converters. Sven's stuff is turning out to be tres' cool to look at. Custom hardware needed for integration would be pretty simple.
Yeah, any of the newer cars should offer bluetooth phone/media(A2DP) integration as an option. Would be awesome to get the Talk to Text going through the car bluetooth and Voice command system! Ahhh dreams.....

Actually you can add this to any car. Check out the Parrot Kit. I have it in both our vans, can stream audio, voice dial the works. This is the company that licenses the kits to OEM...

My Sony deck does all this same stuff. It cost like $200, and I think there's a cheaper model with a smaller screen that has the same functionality. Not sure if you can do the buttons on the steering wheel thing with it, my car doesn't have them.

For the rest of us,
I had an Ipod hookup installed in my car. They sell female dock to 3.5mm male cables all over. I picked mine up on ebay, and I've also seen female dock to male 3.5mm + microusb (or whatever this thing uses)

Have any idea if this works on an 08?

You can always add on, but there is nothing equal to having the controls be solid and in the steering wheel. The alpine and other equivalent decks do offer a lot, but none seem to integrate as well or even attach easily to the built in wire system.... one more reason to keep your stock deck and use LOD's connected to small amps in the car doors, etc.
Next step - make a plug in tablet attachment for EVO....

I own the same vehicle, so do tell how I can stream music from my phone to my car without using the line in jack (which while works, doesn't allow me to adjust anything while driving).

Assuming you bought the bluetooth option:
1. Press the "speaking" button on the steering wheel
2. Say "setup"
3. Say "pairing options"
4. Say "Pair"
5. Pick a 4 digit pairing code and say it aloud (make sure that your bluetooth is on and is discoverable)
6. In the bluetooth pairing menu (under settings > wireless > bluetooth settings) hit "mazda"
7. Enter in the 4 digit pairing code
8. You are connected! (will see a phone and a music icon it the HUD)
Now every time you get in the car with the bluetooth on it will auto pair with your car when you turn on and go.
Next step - program in all your fav numbers for it to call automatically (do so while connected to the car).
Use Meridian and MP3 files. All of teh controlls from teh next track to the play and pause will work wonderfully and turn the volume on the phone all the way up. You will never top 35/62 for volume - PROMISE!

anyone know of an aftermarket bluetooth kit that will allow steering wheel music control in an acura / honda?

Well, usually this involves going to the car dealer and having them install a new steering wheel with the controls and having a compatible deck that plays nice with external remotes/controls (usually fairly expensive decks) or some sort of Parrot brand integrated control.
Most simple bet? Get a Bluetooth car kit with remote that attaches to the steering wheel and a bluetooth receiver that does A2DP with either FM or Line-out (preferred)
Go to your local customs shop and ask around, there tend to be a lot of acura/honda/toyota/infiniti compatible stuff.

Galaxy Nexus to iPod accesories

I have no clue what section this question would belong in. Mods, feel free to move this if there is a better place for it.
I haven't used my iPod since getting my first android, three androids ago. I do however have an iPod dock connected to my AV receiver at home, and a dock connector wired into my car. Has anyone figured out a way to use iPod accessories with their android? Ideally I wish I had the programming knowledge to emulate the iPod and have all the controls functional but that is way beyond what I'm capable of. I was thinking of getting a female dock connector and connecting a micro usb and 3.5mm audio jack so I could both charge and output audio through it. Also, what comes out of the MHL/USB on the Galaxy? Could I get analog audio from it so I would just have one usb cable to connect to charge and listen? Thoughts?

It -may- charge w/ the dock to micro usb adapter. That's pretty much it.
You won't get audio out of it, nor data more than likely (even power is up-in-the-air) simply because the system doesn't have the software to work with the connections made available w/ that adapter.
Edit: Also, you probably should've posted this in Q&A.

It would be pretty difficult to do something like that and would probably require building a device that would sit between the iPod dock and the Android phone.
It might be possible to do something like this. As long as your dock uses analog audio instead of usb audio like my car radio uses.

So you are saying you think it's looking to see if an ipod is connected before it looks for the audio coming out of it? I was under the assumption it was always ready for it since I need to first manually switch to the ipod input on the stereo... hmmm...

Nice. That's exactly what I was thinking of doing.

Well that link was encouraging enough that at least someone has gotten this to work. I went ahead and ordered a female dock connector from here http://aloaudio.com/30-female-dock-connector-with-wire-board.html. At worst I'm out $14.35. I'll update the thread with what I find out.

The dock connector arrived today. I haven't messed around with the one in my car but I did test the one on my AV receiver. Things I've learned:
1) If the receiver is on, there is a steady 4.9 volts available to charge my Galaxy.
2) There is some sort of check to see if an ipod is connected before it will switch to listen for audio on the input pins. I can actually hear a click of a relay when I connect my ipod that I do not hear with the wire connected.
3) I placed the ipod in the dock to get it to switch. I then I wired a headphone cable to the audio in pins of the dock. To my surprise I could play music from my Galaxy just fine.
If I could just figure out what it is looking for to know whether or not an ipod is connected, this should work just fine.

I just want to update this thread. I finally got around to messing with this again (yes 4 months later).
I have it working perfectly for audio in my car! As long as pins 1 & 2 are shorted it switches the head unit into iPod mode and audio gets sent to the speakers. Pins 2, 3, 4 are Ground, Right, and Left audio. I would record a video of it working but the only thing I have is my GN and I can't use it to play music and record video.
I gave up on my home theater receiver. There's power there to charge it but I can't figure out how to fool it to listen for the audio.

Y not just buy the ipod to universal Bluetooth adapter? That way the phone doesn't even have to be docked? Sprint sells it

I may have to buy one of those for my Klipsch iFi speakers. I was thinking about getting the official dock from Expansys, running this audio cable to the iPod input, and adding some other stuff via NFC tag to make the setup sort of like Ford Sync in my car.

I own an Audi Q5 and it can stream music from either iPod, USB or 3.5'' mm jack using a Media Link Cable. It sounds nice, but your device has be locked in the glove box!! So i decided to get this device from amazon - "http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0087XSV08/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01". It streams music to your receiver via Bluetooth. I love this solution because i almost always use Google Map for my GPS navigation.
It works great because i have a Bose Sounddock with an iPod jack too.

I'm a little late to this party but I too am looking for a solution to convert my Klipsch iFi into a Bluetooth dock so we can use our Evo LTE's on it. I have a 1st gen iPod Nano on it but 2gb of music (the 4gb one we had died) just isn't getting it done. I also want the ability to run internet radio stations and playlists and what not. I bought about the cheapest iPod Bluetooth adapter available on eBay and was disappointed that it did not work. The LED on top wouldn't even light up to indicate it was getting power. They seller sent me another one and unfortunately it also does not work. The seller assured me that he tests every single one that is sent (uh huh, I believe you) so it would appear as though this particular adapter will not work. As soon as I can get a refund I will start going up the list as far as price goes. Just wonder if you were ever able to find a solution for your iFi to save me the effort of order several different adapters until I find one that works. I don't see why this one didn't work as the iFi should work just like every other iPod dock on the market as far as how it interfaces with the iPod/adapter.

This adapter you linked to looks exactly like the adapter I got from eBay but I only paid $15.99 w/free shipping. If anyone else is interested in trying out one of these types of adapters I would check eBay first. While mine didn't work for my iFi specifically the seller has good feedback so I would imagine it works for most. My issue is probably Klipsch iFi specific. I plan to order a different version from another seller for a few bucks more and can report back my findings if it works or not as another option but I wouldn't spend $40 for what looks exactly like what I paid $16 shipped for.

galaxy S3 to car stereo????

I'm looking to buy a new car stereo, and I'm basically treating it as an accessory for my Galaxy SIII. I'm open to any brands within a reasonable price range.
What's the best way to listen to the music that is on my Galaxy SIII right now, wirelessly without losing sound quality? I know that I can just use an audio input jack, but is there any other way? I heard that yo lose a lot of audio quality using bluetooh.
I guess what I'm saying, is there any technology like Allshare that lets me stream high quality audio to a car stereo?

I use Bluetooth everyday, with no noticeable loss in sound quality. However, it is dependant on your stereo too. I have a cheap Jenson Double-Din Nav Unit.

Bluetooth is going to be your only wireless method that will not sound like total crap , but USB would be the best quality, but dont think you can do this like an ipod can. Not sure what is needed to make these phones work like that , charge and play music thru the USB direct to stereo is nice. Id like to ditch my ipod and just use my S3, but for now it just works better.

Not all bluetooth-enable car stereos allow for music playback. Mine, for example, only allows for voice calls and voice commands (such as S-Voice).

But does the easy UMS work on the AT&T S3?

Ive used Sony bluetooth stereos in my car for the past 3 years. Ive heard that some other manufacturers either dumb down the feature or make you buy a dongle, but the Sony comes ready to go, no extra dongle needed.
I bought the latest when my older model was stolen. Its the BT-3900u (120 on Amazon) and I honestly cant tell the difference between CD and streaming.
Pros: 3 preamps (front, rear, sub), decent equalizer, galaxy connects instantly w/ no hiccups, change face color, Bluetooth gain control
cons: radio reception is OK (could be my antenna), built in mic causes a lot of background noise for the other person (my car is pretty loud). But it does have an option to route your own wired mic.
I honestly stopped using CD's and the radio now that all my music syncs up instantly.

I would like to know what car stereos would work with the GS3 straight out of the box. I'm sure there are a few that would allow us to plug in via USB and be able to listen to our music while charging the phone.
Can anyone confirm any models that work like this?

Pioneer makes a nice head unit called the appradio that is double din, and has usb and bluetoooth, if you use the usb, and the pioneer app that goes with it, it basicly turns the double din screen into a second touchscreen display for your phone.

Bluetooth is the way to go, excellent quality and you cna amp it with awesome beats or DSP mgr and if you is power amp, then you can equalize it further
In addition, the automation with tasker is awesome ( Sync Bluetooth > Start Player > and then close app when no Bluetooth etc )

I have two decks a pioneer dvd2300 double din with the bluetooth add on its worked the best i can use bluetooth and change songs from the deck directly and even control pandora once installed. Before i use to have a kenwood single din it was hd942u worked through usb it was fast n automatically scanned for music which was awesome.

I bought a Dual from walmart for $90. I just like you didn't want to spend too much money. for the price, not bad at all. bluetooth streaming music and movies is pretty cool. no quality distortions at all. also has a front aux in and USB port.

i dont think you can connect it to the stereo via USB since the S3 has MTP and not USM unless you root it and use the app as stated a few posts ago. can anyone confirm this?

FM transmitter is one of the worst connection methods you can use. The sound quality is ALWAYS bad.

I absolutely hate aftermarket decks, I use my motorola bluetooth box on long trips, but there is definitely quality loss over the FM transmitter. I have an aux jack for short trips, I really wish I had an aux cord that had buttons like the headphones do, just so I wouldn't have to look at the phone to change songs or anything.

I have a Verizon GS3 and a Galaxy Tab 7.7 - both support apt-X which is the newer, higher quality bluetooth format. If you can find a head unit that supports apt-X (i don't know if any are out, yet), you'd be golden.
As of now, the only way to get apt-X streaming into your car would be to get an adapter like this: Samsung HS3000 and plug it into your auxiliary input of your stereo.
Another thing you can do (and this is actually my setup in my Mazda) is to get a head unit that supports iPod/iPhone audio AND controls w/ a dock connector. There are cheap bluetooth to 30-pin dock connectors (see dealextreme) that will let your bluetooth phone connect to any iPod dock and play the audio wirelessly, but the added advantage is if the head unit has iPod track navigation controls, it can pass those controls to the phone during playback through the bluetooth as well. This will let you control the tracks playing on the phone from the stereo -the double bonus is if your car has integrated steering controls for the head unit. When my phone/tablet is connected and playing audio this way, I can move next/previous tracks from my steering wheel. I'm hoping some manufacturer comes out with a 30-pin bluetooth dock adapter w/ apt-X as well.
Finally, if you choose to connect your phone directly to a aux in but also have it on your charger you're probably going to get a ground loop humming sound. Get one of these: PAC Ground Isolator for 3.5 jacks to get rid of that annoying hum.

Anything Comparable to AppRadio 2?

I am in the market for a new head unit since the one I have has blue tooth but only phone functions. No audio streaming. Which was fine when I had the iPhone 4s because the radio actually had a Pandora Radio App. But now that I moved on to bigger and better things, Galaxy SIII I need a better head unit. My needs are really basic. 2 pre-outs (prefer 4 volts but will manage with 2 volts) Bluetooth Audio Streaming and the capability of controlling my SIII through the unit. The only head unit I found so far that does all that is the Pioneer AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100)
Any suggestions?

i just ordered an appradio 2 earlier this week because i couldnt find anything that i liked that would do pretty much what you want to do

Maybe check out the Parrot Asteroid...

I can't believe a high end radio like the AppRadio2 does not have a dedicated subwoofer output. You only get four channels. Front & rear or Front & sub.

I just bought the AppRadio 2 last week and haven't installed it yet so I've been playing aound with it in the house.
Initial thoughts were that I was going to be able to play videos, run apps all from my phone natively. I was wrong. Out of the box AppRadio2 comes with iPod connector with usb (for charging iPod/iPhone and for upgrading firmware on unit) for Android it has a HDMI connector you have to buy your own HDMI cable, MHL/slimport adaptor.
You also have to download appradio from play store along with a handful of compatible apps. Once that's done, you can finally connect your phone to the head unit via HDMI adaptor and bluetooth.
I tested out most of the free apps and was left unimpressed. Also the response time of the head unit was laggy at times (swiping screens).
I haven't used ARLiberator yet but I have done a lot of research and that app is what will probably keep me from returning the AppRadio 2.
A couple downsides are:
-no dedicated sub preout
-preouts are 2V rather than 4V
-no USB support for USB drives (***big disappointment since I have a GNEX and N4 coming in the mail-no external storage)
-no CD/DVD
-non detachable face (I work in high theft area)
I'm pretty sure thar there will be more android/smartphone compatible headunits in 2013 but I just couldn't wait. I have a 10+ year old Alpine cd player that is all but dead.
I did come across a new Sony headunit though XAV701HD. The interface is a lot better than Appradio2's and it has DVD/CD and USBx2 support! The only thing is that it uses mirrorlink which as of now only the s3 supports.
So for now I guess I'll keep the AppRadio 2 since I got it for a good price, and see what 2013 has to offer

What you are looking for is the Alpine ICS X8..... Sadly it's not out in the US yet

You can use a High/Low Level converter and connect it to the rear speakers. That's what I did =D

I've looked at some head units on crutchfield and set the filters in the search, but I'd rather hear first hand experiences from people that actually use the stuff. I'm looking at asking Santa for an upgrade for my car.

I just use my auxiliary cord. But theoretically any head unit that has Bluetooth or mpt if your going to use it as mass storage shouldn't give you an issue.

f150 with Microsoft SYNC. Flawless.

edit: this headunit has high powered outputs which give the most clear signal if you ever want to upgrade to using a amp

This thing is amazing. I just installed it and love the bluetooth. It's such a steal on amazon right now I highly recommend it.

Last Christmas, Santa (my dad) bought me a Pioneer FH-X700BT. If I recall, it's rather well priced compared to other head units with similar features. It's a double din unit, if that fits what you're looking for. I have zero complaints with the unit. It came with an external microphone in the box which I installed with the help of a friend through the door's a-frame for a perfectly unnoticeable install. I've heard that most units use a microphone built into the face of the unit, which often times have trouble picking up voices. Nobody has complained of having trouble hearing me through the mic. All Bluetooth features work as you'd expect. It's a great unit at a good price and definitely worth a look!

This Kinivo BTC450 Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit for Cars with Aux jack plugged into the aux port on my BMW factory headunit. Pairs automatically without issue and has skip forward and back buttons.
