I just bought a 2010 G37x it is fully loaded with bluetooth, navigation, sunroof, the works. Normally the bluetooth in cars are just for voice to talk handsfree, Not this car. When the salesman ran down the features with me he said that it can stream your music Pandora, Last.FM, Slacker , or what ever your favorite music you stream right to the stereo with no wires attached. You can also control it with the controls on the stearing wheel (Safety). I must say this is one of the best acceseroies I got for my EVO (and for me). I drive a lot so I love listening to something different this is the best way to go.

LOL , no 30% discount code but if you have USAA banking their car buying program will help you negotiate the car price. The program puts the car at invoice price which is about $5k under MSRP. Thats pretty good discount
I have a Pioneer z110bt in my Solstice and I think I can stream music, not sure about Pandora. I would LOVE that option. I'm getting tired of the repetitiveness of XM. But, your new accessory!

I have a 2010 Mazda 3 with all the upgrades and it works wonderfully with the EVO. It is soo much better than my iPhone was that it is almost shocking.
Suggestion: use Meridian as the MP3 player and encode at 320k with Joint Stereo (lame or Frau encoder). That way, you will get a pure MP3 stream and playback with the Car Stereo DAC doing most of the work. Most car audio systems (even component ones) don't really warrant the use of FLAC files.
Would be lovely if we could get some working USB host with drivers for use with many popular aftermarket USB touch displays and use some USB->spdif/i2c converters. Sven's stuff is turning out to be tres' cool to look at. Custom hardware needed for integration would be pretty simple.
Yeah, any of the newer cars should offer bluetooth phone/media(A2DP) integration as an option. Would be awesome to get the Talk to Text going through the car bluetooth and Voice command system! Ahhh dreams.....

Actually you can add this to any car. Check out the Parrot Kit. I have it in both our vans, can stream audio, voice dial the works. This is the company that licenses the kits to OEM...

My Sony deck does all this same stuff. It cost like $200, and I think there's a cheaper model with a smaller screen that has the same functionality. Not sure if you can do the buttons on the steering wheel thing with it, my car doesn't have them.

I had an Ipod hookup installed in my car. They sell female dock to 3.5mm male cables all over. I picked mine up on ebay, and I've also seen female dock to male 3.5mm + microusb (or whatever this thing uses)
Have any idea if this works on an 08?

You can always add on, but there is nothing equal to having the controls be solid and in the steering wheel. The alpine and other equivalent decks do offer a lot, but none seem to integrate as well or even attach easily to the built in wire system.... one more reason to keep your stock deck and use LOD's connected to small amps in the car doors, etc.
Next step - make a plug in tablet attachment for EVO....

I own the same vehicle, so do tell how I can stream music from my phone to my car without using the line in jack (which while works, doesn't allow me to adjust anything while driving).
Assuming you bought the bluetooth option:
1. Press the "speaking" button on the steering wheel
2. Say "setup"
3. Say "pairing options"
4. Say "Pair"
5. Pick a 4 digit pairing code and say it aloud (make sure that your bluetooth is on and is discoverable)
6. In the bluetooth pairing menu (under settings > wireless > bluetooth settings) hit "mazda"
7. Enter in the 4 digit pairing code
8. You are connected! (will see a phone and a music icon it the HUD)
Now every time you get in the car with the bluetooth on it will auto pair with your car when you turn on and go.
Next step - program in all your fav numbers for it to call automatically (do so while connected to the car).
Use Meridian and MP3 files. All of teh controlls from teh next track to the play and pause will work wonderfully and turn the volume on the phone all the way up. You will never top 35/62 for volume - PROMISE!

Well, usually this involves going to the car dealer and having them install a new steering wheel with the controls and having a compatible deck that plays nice with external remotes/controls (usually fairly expensive decks) or some sort of Parrot brand integrated control.
Most simple bet? Get a Bluetooth car kit with remote that attaches to the steering wheel and a bluetooth receiver that does A2DP with either FM or Line-out (preferred)
Go to your local customs shop and ask around, there tend to be a lot of acura/honda/toyota/infiniti compatible stuff.

It will let you stream to anything with an audio input.
EDIT: I'll have a full blown write up on this method in a few weeks hopefully. I'm waiting on a bunch of parts to come in and I'm hooking mine and my father's car up.
That doesn't look like it charges and outputs at the same time. The scosche appears to do this.

It's the Jabra BT3030. One end is the audio output (which plugs into your audio input) and the mini USB port is on the other for charging.

How is bluetooth sound quality now adays. I listen to flac, which is lossless audio, so if it isn't really good - great sound quality wise I will just keep using a 3.5mm cable.
I'm not an audio expert (nor is my ear sensitive enough to pick up subtle differences), but I definitely wouldn't call bluetooth audio ****. I can't tell the difference between the bluetooth connection and wired connection. I've heard accounts saying flac sounds beautiful through bluetooth, but then again audio is something that has always been subjective.

I got a motorocker or something like that yesterday at walmart. It was like 90 bucks regularly on clearance for 60, but i got an extra good deal on it.
When i get my evo back I'll post my opinion on it. I have audiophilistic ears lol. It also fm modulates, so i know frequency is going to limited on the upper end to 16kish. But much over 16k doesn't contain much musical content depending on what you are listening to anyways.
Not that great over FM, glad i didn't pay much for it. I am sure the device you listed would sound very good though as it goes through a regular aux port instead of fm modulation. There didn't appear to be any bluetooth related noise, just fm garbage.
I bought a new Sony desk (BT2800) with Bluetooth built-in, and the quality is near flawless. It seems like I actually have less distortion than when it was physically plugged in. There was a ground short or something when I had it plugged in to charge and to the aux input ( but you only could notice if u turn the volume up with nothing playing). I don't know if that's with all cars or just my older car.

First of all, that BT thing you linked to on ebay does not charge and stream at the same time. It has been covered in the comments section on dealextreme.
Second, I have yet to find any bluetooth reciever that I can add to my stock stereo system that will auto-pair. Auto pairing is a huge deal. If you have to screw around with the bluetooth settings on your phone every time you turn your car on, you might as well plug in the damn aux cable.

Yes it charges while in use (I have mine plugged in all the time now and i have it setup so once i put my evo in my dock it auto ons my bluetooth and connects automatically to it)
call quality is good i just tested in loud car on speakerphone and no reverb and works flawless with one button touch then speak the name u want to call
love the damn thing i cant wait to go to work i use my phone all day while driving around and havign to plug in two wires everytime i get in and out was askign too much
now only need one wire and thats if my battery is dead ill add pics in a bit

Ordered mine from Hawk Electronics on Wednesday night - showed up on the front doorstep today (it helps that their warehouse is here in DFW).
This thing is amazing. Sound quality for music over BT far surpasses what I was getting via 3.5mm jack, and there's no 25% sound reduction just because you docked. In combination with my Sprint car dock, this is just exactly what I've been waiting for. Cool thing about car dock mode: it turns on BT, GPS, and 4G when you dock. It paired without issue, and it fires up the second I dock it in the car.
I used the extension thingy for the microphone, because my AUX port is over on the passenger side in my Element.
Road trip tomorrow.

Care to provide details on the charger used? Does it stay paired/charged long enough to hide it out of sight completely and have it automatically work when I turn the car on and hit play on PowerAmp?

I just went to walmart and found an old nokia charger that has the same plug size as the belkin (had to pick it out with the belkin in hand, was kind of an "i hope this fits" purchase). Got it home, plugged it into the cig lighter, got power and everything worked fine so I hardwired it to the headunits remote power wire (the blue one for amplifiers) and have everything tucked nicely behind the dash. It turns on automatically with the radio, so all you have to do is turn on bluetooth on your phone to pair it and your good to go!

Nice!! I'm still factory stock with a ghetto rigged aux in to my cd changer, so this might not work for my situation since I dont really have any amps hooked up to trigger power.

You can tap the charger into any 12v power source in the car, the amp wire was just the easiest for my situation. There are ignition wires you can tap into, or even find the power wire for the stock radio. Just grab a volt meter and start testing around, you'll find something. You can even tap into the cigarette lighter wires if you need to.

Bluetooth streaming works great, comes with an external mic you can mount on your visor for calls, can connect to like 10 devices and has an internal phonebook you can transfer contacts into so you can call from the deck. I just get in my car and it's connected, press play on either the deck or the phone and it starts playing(if I'm using bluetooth audio as the source on the deck of course.) It also works amazingly with my iPod, supports just about every function you can think of with good navigation and even has a mode where you can restore control of the music to the iPod itself in case you want to hand it to someone who doesn't want to figure out the deck's controls. You just plug it into the front with a standard usb port and it works.
I think there's also a cheaper version that has a smaller screen with less info, but otherwise nearly the same functionality. I know Sony has some other ones now too that can actually hold an iPod within the deck itself now too. I don't think they have a cd player though.
Unless you guys are running Cyanogen, doesn't the BT sound like crap with the low bitpool? I've played with a few A2DP devices with the Evo (headsets mostly), and the sound was un-listenable. Distorted, compressed, and very lo-fi. It was much better with CM, but I like Sense.

I just installed the Clarion CX609 (double din) from SonicElectrolux. It sounds great, I couldn't be happier. Comes with a mic that you can put wherever you like.

I use Bluetooth everyday, with no noticeable loss in sound quality. However, it is dependant on your stereo too. I have a cheap Jenson Double-Din Nav Unit.
Bluetooth is going to be your only wireless method that will not sound like total crap , but USB would be the best quality, but dont think you can do this like an ipod can. Not sure what is needed to make these phones work like that , charge and play music thru the USB direct to stereo is nice. Id like to ditch my ipod and just use my S3, but for now it just works better.

But does the easy UMS work on the AT&T S3?
Ive used Sony bluetooth stereos in my car for the past 3 years. Ive heard that some other manufacturers either dumb down the feature or make you buy a dongle, but the Sony comes ready to go, no extra dongle needed.
I bought the latest when my older model was stolen. Its the BT-3900u (120 on Amazon) and I honestly cant tell the difference between CD and streaming.
Pros: 3 preamps (front, rear, sub), decent equalizer, galaxy connects instantly w/ no hiccups, change face color, Bluetooth gain control
cons: radio reception is OK (could be my antenna), built in mic causes a lot of background noise for the other person (my car is pretty loud). But it does have an option to route your own wired mic.
I honestly stopped using CD's and the radio now that all my music syncs up instantly.
I would like to know what car stereos would work with the GS3 straight out of the box. I'm sure there are a few that would allow us to plug in via USB and be able to listen to our music while charging the phone.
Can anyone confirm any models that work like this?

Pioneer makes a nice head unit called the appradio that is double din, and has usb and bluetoooth, if you use the usb, and the pioneer app that goes with it, it basicly turns the double din screen into a second touchscreen display for your phone.

Bluetooth is the way to go, excellent quality and you cna amp it with awesome beats or DSP mgr and if you is power amp, then you can equalize it further
In addition, the automation with tasker is awesome ( Sync Bluetooth > Start Player > and then close app when no Bluetooth etc )
I have two decks a pioneer dvd2300 double din with the bluetooth add on its worked the best i can use bluetooth and change songs from the deck directly and even control pandora once installed. Before i use to have a kenwood single din it was hd942u worked through usb it was fast n automatically scanned for music which was awesome.

FM transmitter is one of the worst connection methods you can use. The sound quality is ALWAYS bad.
I absolutely hate aftermarket decks, I use my motorola bluetooth box on long trips, but there is definitely quality loss over the FM transmitter. I have an aux jack for short trips, I really wish I had an aux cord that had buttons like the headphones do, just so I wouldn't have to look at the phone to change songs or anything.
I have a Verizon GS3 and a Galaxy Tab 7.7 - both support apt-X which is the newer, higher quality bluetooth format. If you can find a head unit that supports apt-X (i don't know if any are out, yet), you'd be golden.
As of now, the only way to get apt-X streaming into your car would be to get an adapter like this: Samsung HS3000 and plug it into your auxiliary input of your stereo.
Another thing you can do (and this is actually my setup in my Mazda) is to get a head unit that supports iPod/iPhone audio AND controls w/ a dock connector. There are cheap bluetooth to 30-pin dock connectors (see dealextreme) that will let your bluetooth phone connect to any iPod dock and play the audio wirelessly, but the added advantage is if the head unit has iPod track navigation controls, it can pass those controls to the phone during playback through the bluetooth as well. This will let you control the tracks playing on the phone from the stereo -the double bonus is if your car has integrated steering controls for the head unit. When my phone/tablet is connected and playing audio this way, I can move next/previous tracks from my steering wheel. I'm hoping some manufacturer comes out with a 30-pin bluetooth dock adapter w/ apt-X as well.
Finally, if you choose to connect your phone directly to a aux in but also have it on your charger you're probably going to get a ground loop humming sound. Get one of these: PAC Ground Isolator for 3.5 jacks to get rid of that annoying hum.

I own an 06 Jetta GLI with the Premium 7 radio. I'm currently using a Dension Gateway iPod adapter which displays track/browsing info on the MFI in the gauge cluster. Full browsing is accomplished via the steering wheel controls. It's very nice, and seamless. Here's a link to a video of it in action for reference purposes

While searching around for something similar for Android devices, I happened upon an adapter from Grom Audio. They claim it displays track/browsing info as well as plays music over bluetooth. Has anyone tried or heard about these?

nothing new really, my 5 year old alpine just plugs into my phone via usb and finds the mp3s.. the newer units do it over bluetooth via an app, id be surprised if the modern oem radios didn't at least have usb connectivity
That's pretty neat. I have a 2013 Elantra and I can only stream the music at the radio. A readout of the artist, song name, etc, and the ability to fast forward with my wheel mounted controls would be nice.
Wow. That does look nice. I need to read more, but I do see my vehicle on the supported list. Kind of expensive, but if it works like it says, I might actually give it a shot.

I had a similar "issue" with my car.
I have an Ipod connector that I can control from the steering wheel.
So instead of using the ipod connector for an actual Ipod, I bought this bluetooth adapter:

Bluetooth ML-D100 => It cost from $30 to $45
I connected to the the ipod interface and connected my phone to the bluetooth.
I works very well in my case, but i don't have the same car.
I have an IS-250 with FlyAudio 2 Stereo System.

Works great for my iPod Video, but just has a line input for anything else. Kind of makes me want to sell that and get this, especially if I can integrate the iPod AND my S3 and control both with my steering wheel controls!! :laugh:
I would be curious to know the sound quality of this adapter, using either the bluetooth, line-in and/or iPod connectivity options. I know there were a lot of debates on the Mazda 3 forum between the various adapters and the GTA Car Kit was the best of the lot in all of my reading. Granted, we could assume that since it plugs straight into the back of the headunit, it should be great but I am still skeptical.
Anyone willing to be the guinea pig, get one and report back??

My 2011 accord has usb, and but will only support Apple devices. My gs3 shows up as "unsupported". I also have a 3.5mm jack, but then I can't use the radio or steering wheel controls. This generation of Accords never had bluetooth audio, only voice.
I have tried bluetooth audio converters, and but they seem laggy and slow. The two (one was a blackberry, and can't remember the other) I tried, I returned.
I can load music to an usb stick, but there are no folders, just the song titles. This is annoying as my old iphone would let me sort by song, artist, album or play list. I drive a lot, and this is becoming very annoying. So much that I'm actually tempted to go buy the biggest gb ipod I can get, just to have easy accessibility to my digital library in my car.
So if someone has a solution that costs less than an ipod, and does not require me taking the dash apart, I'm all ears!

My Pioneer unit has a usb that was made specifically for ipod. When you plug it in it says unsupported, but still allows me to play the songs from my GS3. It also has Bluetooth though so its not really an issue for me.
I ended up buying a Parrot MKI9200. Bluetooth telephony and music streaming. It says it is made for iphone but works better with my S3 than it did with my old iphone 4.

In my Nissan Sentra 2012 it has Bluetooth, but for calls only. When I play music it plays from my phone instead of car, and in Bluetooth setting the car has call capabilities only. I have a rooted LG g2, and will be willing to try anything. Is there any tricks to make it think its a call but plays music instead.

I've never heard of anything like that?
There are $25 bluetooth devices out there which plug into your stereo's 3.5mm aux input if it has one. They work very well for calls and music.

are you sure ? all car radios ive seen have bluetooth total audio playback. Make sure its setup on your phone correctly too.. need to check that nissan sentra lol
I found out its something about not supporting one of the Bluetooth modes, if I payed for extra features it probably would have worked but I found a app called btmono, it's on the play store and it makes the car think I'm in a call and plays music like that, but the sound quality is horrible but that because of the trick they used to allow music through fake call. On the car it says I'm in a call with my own phone number
no a2dp that is ... i have an (older) alpine aftermarket unit, BT for calls is just great, but there ist absolutely no streaming going on. i use the front-aux for that matter.
Google has made great advances in supporting non-A2DP cars. My 2010 Chevy Malibu has Bluetooth but not A2DP. I can do Google Now and other voice commands through the phone system.
You do have to change some settings. Specifically in Google Now Settings you have to enable Bluetooth headset support. Once you do that, you can then call up Google Now and it will route audio.
There are a couple of apps out there that will pump stereo audio through the phone profile. But I don't recommend them. You're vastly better off with a 3.5mm to A2DP adapter.

Well, at least I won't be the first one to necro-post on this...
It's more common than you think guys, especially with the older cars, *designed* when BT was available, but smartphones were new. Considering how lengthy the car design process is, I'm not surprised 2012 models are still affected.
On top of solutions posted above (well, if you care about sound quality, there's just one solution basically and TheWirecutter folks have done a lot of research and ruled Himbox HB01/Himbox HB01 Plus the king of them all), you might be in luck if there's an aftermarket unit available for your model which will plug into the back of your entertainment system and have both BT Phone and BT Multimedia profiles. You might need some tools and partial disassembly will be required to install.
There was one of these available for my 2008 Audi and while it was extremely pricey (about US $200) it's definitely cheaper than buying a new car.
i had 2010 VW and a 2011 Caddy that both had Bluetooth for the phone but not music
What is the best solution for this with my Nissan Altima 2011 it only has the limited Bluetooth.
