Evo to Ipod Dock Adapter DIY

I would like to be able to connect my Evo to my car so that I can listen to Pandora using the car stereo. Unfortunately my car only has an Ipod dock connector.
Would it be possible to create an adapter that will allow you to connect an HTC Evo to an Ipod dock and output audio?
I have seen something similar being done with a T-Mobile G1.

Is it just as simple as getting a Ipod dock extender cable like this one:

and cutting off the male and of this cable and soldering it to a male end of microusb cable?

this is a huge area where android needs improvement.

There's no audio through the Evo USB port. I was searching for the same thing last night. I have a logitech ipod speaker: (can't post links)

What I'm thinking about doing is to hardwire the bluetooth adapter to the inside of the speaker. Then get the 5v from the dock and make a cable or adapter to go to the Evo's mini usb port. It's not the best solution, but I do have all of the parts already. If I didn't, headphones would suffice.

find the schematic for the ipod dock and solder a headphone jack to the audio inputs on the connector and you're done. I have done the same thing and it worked just fine for my friend that I did it for.
the thing that sucks about that is you will need an extra cable to charge the phone.

Hence my bluetooth idea.

I did some digging around a couple weeks ago and came across this

It sucks you need the 3.5 adapter, but better than letting letting a perfectly good dock sit and collect dust.

I just ordered a couple of these last week. My car has an ipod adapter, and this should let me connect to that and connect the 3mm to my EVO.
It's coming from Hong Kong so may be a bit longer before it's delivered. I'll report back when I get it.

I had the same problem, I think the best solution is to go Bluetooth. This will future proof you for phone changes down the line as well. Long story short, here is the best solution I've found and it works great! Just connect it to your ipod cable and stream over Bluetooth. So far it has worked with everything ipod, iPhone and iPad that I own, especially my custom installed iPhone stereo connector.
Just look up item number 190402178083 on eBay.

Step 1: Buy some Sugru or ShapeLock
Step 2: Buy Cheapie $1 headphones
Step 3: Buy iPod female Dock connector and MicroUSB Male end
Step 4: Use Pinout.ru to connect the points appropriately (iPod dock connector pins are pretty small and you must work quickly or your will melt the plastic, do not forget the internal resistors if needed for your application)
Step 5: Wrap it up in Sugru or Shapelock (use hairdryer to smooth it out with your hands)
Step 6: Paint and Enjoy!
Creating custom cables and docks and such is really not that difficult, just need some decent soldering skill and patience.

FIPO Bluetooth
I use this in my BMW for streaming over the bluetooth to the stereo. Works great and convient to just start the car and the Evo start playing music/podcast/etc.

Some of us do have the necessary skills, but do not want a ugly wire staring us in the face. Also the components themselves tend to get expensive when ripping apart 3 different cords for parts... not to mention when someone tries this and melts something, then you have to go through the hassle of ordering more components. That is the main reason we come here, because someone may already be on the job.
Now..... if your offering to do it, and you have a pricetag and are willing to offer support in case it doesn't work or kills our phones or car stereos, then I am all ears. But definitely thanks for the link.
As far as BT goes, the one poster is kind of right, I think the phone industry is betting on bluetooth, although its been 15 years, and BT performance is still at best Mediocre.

True, But there are those of us with drive to do something unique and have something that fits our needs exactly. DealExtreme.com is a great place to buy the cables to be ripped up and dollar stores can be a real treasure trove. Craft/ART stores also have a lot of things which can be easily repurposed.

I used to be a person who did his kind of work in college, but it is time consuming and repetitive. Plus, this is likely a market of people who are not willing to spend great amounts of money on handmade products. Even if someone charged $30 each it would not be worth the average techies time, but a worthwhile effort for a high school or college student with the drive to learn and perfect.

You are correct in MOST scenarios!
It is more of an issue not with the BT technology itself rather the way it is popularly implemented. BT does have the ability to send out very high quality audio streams and many of which are nearly lossless in quality. The issues are with the device that streams and the device that receives. The chosen connection type between the two devices must be mutual. Problem is that most BT devices streaming A2DP use only SBC coding of varied bit rate and quality.
Now if you have a really well done setup that is very thought out you can have your EVO sending out a pure 320kbps MP3 or AAC or other compatible stream direct with no conversion being done in real time to a BT receiver which is MP3, etc. stream compatible and has an excellent, typically non-chip integrated, DAC with a nice buffered output. Problem is that many BT receiver chips are made to be as cheap as possible, have crappy dacs, and push out very little power (or simply have no buffer at all) to even crappier speakers. When you combine that with real time conversion of MP3 and other formats to SBC at an even lower bit rate, you have an even worse experience.
IMO, the headphone output on the EVO does not sound that good and if you have a car that does accept MP3 320k BT streams and you use an alternative media player like meridian that allows that kind of behavior, then it should be fine for even above average car audio.

Well, that was a mouthfull. Thanks though, it helps a little. I did spend quite a while researching different Bluetooth headsets. But alas, as you have pointed out, although most of what is considered to be high end headsets, still only use bluetooth 2.0. The EVO also doesn't do a very good job at streaming bluetooth. Pandora and Music Player skip horribly. I was not aware that Meridian did a better job. I guess, that might have been another option.
As far as the bluetooth headsets go though, if your looking for A2DP, the selection is still limited, unless you want a dongle type headset, which IMO, you might as well use a wire. The Motorola, Rocketfish and Jabra headsets of top end just don't do as good a job as seating properly, unless you spend 50+ dollars on a custom ear piece.
There really are a lot of trade-offs in audio performance, but a good set high quality ear buds or headphones are hard to beat. Then comes the Car audio as well as home audio into play. I use mine as a MP3 player both on the go and in the car. My car has a Audio In jack, so I am happy with that.
I ordered a E5 Amplifier to go with mine, it should be here in a week or two. While my headset has finally broken in, I could do with about 10-20% more volume, but I am hoping for a little improved base since it will have the power to push my Vmoda Remix.

Yeah, The E5 is a decent beginner set. You may want to look at building a CMoy at some point, make sure to use slightly larger electrolytic caps and good film caps (resistors don't matter as much). If you make one with good parts and socketed chip, you can roll in to your flavor and it will take portable amps that are $100 or more to beat it. As far as kit amps go, its hard to beat a Mini3 for $100 to put together yourself.
I only say this as a person who actually owns a $450 Portable Amp and $575 Custom triple driver In-ear's. Don't even get me started about the stuff that is at home (I have way too much audio crap!)
BTW - you can make your own custom silicone ear pieces by using some Sugru or if you know an audiologist, you can get some of the Westone two part silicone that they normally use for getting impressions. As with everything, be careful and YMMV.
I wish i had the time to work on getting a USB host for the EVO so that we could use external USB DAC's (like the very small alien and grub).

Just ordered this too. The cable I ordered from Bestofferbuy . c o m was backordered, so I canceled. I agree with you, this should do the trick, saw it on another forum and looks like it will also allow some steering wheel functionality.
I ordered two through amazon, also found it on geek . com. Searching either with "Sprint Anycom Bluetooth A2DP Reciever" will get you there.

Hey does any one is using your evo to stream music using the bluetooth pair ?
I want to buy a car stereo that have usb and bluetooth ready to stream music from my evo.
I have seen a couple of videos on youtube they have blootooth but no usb I want to have both options
any suggestion it will be appreciate.

I have a Alpine w505 and I use bluetooth streaming but not sure if you can connect to a cable usb. The phone contacts and call logs even transfer.

Care to provide details on the charger used? Does it stay paired/charged long enough to hide it out of sight completely and have it automatically work when I turn the car on and hit play on PowerAmp?

I just went to walmart and found an old nokia charger that has the same plug size as the belkin (had to pick it out with the belkin in hand, was kind of an "i hope this fits" purchase). Got it home, plugged it into the cig lighter, got power and everything worked fine so I hardwired it to the headunits remote power wire (the blue one for amplifiers) and have everything tucked nicely behind the dash. It turns on automatically with the radio, so all you have to do is turn on bluetooth on your phone to pair it and your good to go!

Nice!! I'm still factory stock with a ghetto rigged aux in to my cd changer, so this might not work for my situation since I dont really have any amps hooked up to trigger power.

You can tap the charger into any 12v power source in the car, the amp wire was just the easiest for my situation. There are ignition wires you can tap into, or even find the power wire for the stock radio. Just grab a volt meter and start testing around, you'll find something. You can even tap into the cigarette lighter wires if you need to.

Bluetooth streaming works great, comes with an external mic you can mount on your visor for calls, can connect to like 10 devices and has an internal phonebook you can transfer contacts into so you can call from the deck. I just get in my car and it's connected, press play on either the deck or the phone and it starts playing(if I'm using bluetooth audio as the source on the deck of course.) It also works amazingly with my iPod, supports just about every function you can think of with good navigation and even has a mode where you can restore control of the music to the iPod itself in case you want to hand it to someone who doesn't want to figure out the deck's controls. You just plug it into the front with a standard usb port and it works.
I think there's also a cheaper version that has a smaller screen with less info, but otherwise nearly the same functionality. I know Sony has some other ones now too that can actually hold an iPod within the deck itself now too. I don't think they have a cd player though.

Unless you guys are running Cyanogen, doesn't the BT sound like crap with the low bitpool? I've played with a few A2DP devices with the Evo (headsets mostly), and the sound was un-listenable. Distorted, compressed, and very lo-fi. It was much better with CM, but I like Sense.

I decided to give a shot to this model Clarion CZ500 after many days of searching and reading reviews of a lot of car stereos.
The Clarion CZ500 it seems very stable and have what I am looking for it.

I just installed the Clarion CX609 (double din) from SonicElectrolux. It sounds great, I couldn't be happier. Comes with a mic that you can put wherever you like.

I have a model EXTREMELY similar to this:

and I LOVE it. The only one thing I don't like is that it's VERY bright, but I drive at night so that makes a bigger difference to me than others.

I just installed a DUAL XHD7714. $120 at best buy. It has every feature I would like. Bluetooth, HD, front USB and Aux inputs. I'm pretty happy with it.

I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey, and it's great except for a pet peeve, it has an aux button on the radio, but the only aux input I have found is on the armrest in the back of the 3rd row (stupid design). Honda will install an aux input up front but it's like $200 lol. So I'm looking for something that will plug into that aux input (it has a cigarette input there too), but b/c of the distance between the 3rd row and driver's seat, will let me wirelessly connect my evo to the audio system.

For quality purposes, I would go with a new aux. Do it with a small business. It may be cheaper.

theres a bluetooth device in the cig. plug and it plugs in to supply the device with power. make sense?
I'm getting it because my BMW only does phone through the bluetooth and I want to stream music.

ah it looks like i would plug the cig adaptor in, plug the aux into the aux input, then pair w/my evo, and that's it right? Unfortunately the mic would be far from me, but i also would mainly use it for streaming pandora

Why would the mic be far away from you? Bluetooth should be good for 30ft so you can have the evo sitting on you lap if you want too.

I thought about having an aux put in, but it's still under warranty and that means I'd have to get the dealership to put it in to avoid voiding the warranty. Pretty sure they'd charge more than 80.

I have the Tunelink auto. Works flawlessly. As long as bluetooth is turned on on my EVO, music will pick up where it left off when i start the engine. It's pretty expensive but I was able to snag one in the Beta.

How expensive is it? link?

A different option might be the BH-214 in my signature. Works great outside the car too!

This one seems cool, even has a USB port to charge a phone from. Kind of a lot of cables though, if you're plugging bluetooth **** into your stereo you might as well plug your phone into your stereo for a dollar's worth of audio cable.

Ridiculous. Don't go through Honda. I'd just go to an aftermarket stereo shop and have one installed if you really want one up front, or buy the aforementioned bluetooth ones. Regarding your warranty, unless you're leasing the car (in which case you shouldn't make any modifications), the warranty is only for "powertrain" usually, which is the engine/transmission/brakes etc. Not little stuff like the radio. But I could be mistaken.

why not get a new car stereo with aux input and bluetooth, i got a sony xplod for $130 installed

I got an extended warranty on the odyssey, and it covers electronics. They said it would only be covered if we got the dealership to install it, which would be prolly too much. That's also the reason why I didn't get an aftermarket radio.

I got the scosche by adapter from walmart for $36. It plugs into the 3.5mm jack and works well for audio streaming. Calls not so much.

All bluetooth adapters suck. I've tried 10+ different A2DP capable adapters over the course of 2 years and all simply ruin the high frequencies. Nothing beats hardwired Aux cable if you actually care about sound quality...

Sorry, but this is just a gimmick for those without knowledge in my opinion. Other than the bluetooth function, which there are a million of those out there, a person could just plug a male to male 3.5mm stereo plug into the phone to the AUX port in the car if its available.

I actually own it... I get WAY better quality over the bluetooth connection than I do with a direct line in. The headphone jack on your phone is designed for just that... headphones. Lining in directly reflects this. Wish there was a way for you to give it a try. I am kind of a sound snob, and I love mine. Plus, all you have to do is get in the car and once the bluetooth pairing happens, the app will open your music app and start playing.
Not trying to push this thing on ya. Just wanted you to know, I own one, and I am not "without knowledge"

I tried an AUX cable on three different phones. There was always a high pitched whine through my speakers. I started using a Samsung HM3500 plugged into the same AUX jack and got better quality music with no whine. Plus, no extra cable running through my car to the dash mount.

Did you guys all just have a car stereo that had bluetooth built in? I have an '05 Bonneville GXP but the stereo has neither a aux port or bluetooth capability...Major sad face...I really don't want to replace the stereo either because it's nice and fits the look of the car - would look stupid with anything other than a big touchscreen replacement and that's just too expensive.
Any suggestions?

You could get an FM modulator that would allow you to add a line in via your radio antenna, but they don't have great sound quality.

Yes, just swap out the headunit for one with bluetooth build-in. Just make sure it supports A2DP (music streaming over bluetooth). I got mine from Amazon for $140, Sony MEX-BT3900U, and it been simply great. A2DP for bluetooth streaming, Aux port for wired 3.5mm audio, and it has USB port for charging the phone.

Not all the time. My car had that problem and there were many other factors at fault.
Here are few things to look out for:
If your car has an amplifier in the rear, make sure that the headunit-to-amplifier audio cables are at least few feet away from power wires (aka, run them on the opposite side of the car than the power cables).
Make sure that the headunit is properly grounded. If that still doesn't help, run both headunit's + and - power wires directly to the car battery.
If problem still persists, repeat #2 but for the amp (if you have it).
If all above failed, it's time to invest in a better headunit. Your old one sucks and can't suppress the noise generated by the chassy/alternator.
I had crappy stock headunit and weaka$$ stock amp that would always make the static and constant whine problems. Ended up completely redoing the car audio system. Now, even with the headunit not grounded audio quality is PERFECT.
Here are the prices for my audio remodeling, all items bought brand new:
- Sony MEX-BT3900U. Headunit with CD, Aux, Handsfree Phone, Bluetooth A2DP audio, USB ($140)
- Hifonics ZXi80.4. Amplifier with 4 channels, 80W RMS per channel ($134)
- Alpine SPS-600 speakers. 6.5" 2-way speakers, 80W RMS ($50 ea)
- Stinger Pro 3 Series Snake. 6-channel, 20 feet RCA snake that goes from headunit to the amp in the rear ($35)
- 2x22' 8AWG battery-to-amp power wire
- 2x18' 12AWG amp-to-headunit power wire
- 4x18' 16AWG amp-to-front speaker wires
- 4x2' 16AWG amp-to-rear speaker wires
- 30A fuse in the engine bay
I ran the power cables on the left side of the car and ran the RCA snake on the right. everything was exactly $525 and I did all work myself (it's quite easy if you ask). now the sound quality in my used-to-be-audio-hell car is dam near perfect now and has absolutely no noise/static at all. you can jack the volume up crazy high without any distortions for like 80Hz+. 80Hz and below can be a problem when maxing out the volume as the speakers are only 6.5" and weren't meant to deliver bass. don't get me wrong, they do make nice bass but just don't handle it too well when playing it very loud.
after years of running this setup I'd say this was one of the best investments i've ever made. my car is built for drifting so it is setup very stiff and shakes/jumps like crazy when dailying (300mi/week) and when i do take it out for a spin the amount of stress it sees it crazy. after all this time you'd think at least some wires would come loose but nope, everything is still running perfect.
so yeah, if you actually care about sound quality in your car and would like it to last, just redo it from scratch. it's fun and is totally worth it

Cars make a lot of "NOISE" this noise is a power issue. it comes from your alternator and your coil and your spark plugs IE "POWER ISSUES"
if you have bad grounds or are lacking noise suppression (cheap equipment old equipment etc.. etc..) or an older car making a TON of extra noise etc.. etc..
Power inverters (especially cheap ones) are notorious for "dirty power" that lets in noise.
when I power my phone off the USB on the cheap inverter's USB port I get big time whine noises painful even.
use the USB port in the radio and I get no noise (but then it tries to "READ" the phone instead of just charging it and won't let me use aux hehe
Sometimes you can get a coil thing to add to power to reduce this noise but usually its just cheap equipment ($7 power inverter
plug a 110v to usb adapter into same inverter and no noise. The 110v adapter isolates and prevents the noise leakage.

haha time to clear up a misunderstanding here. my reply was referring to the "unplug your phone and it should go away" statement and thus assuming that you, by saying "its a power issue", were referring only to the inverter that was powering the phone at times getting a better quality inverter (aka, one that has capacitor or capacitor-pack to smooth out the voltage spikes and noise) is sufficient and at times it is not. I've experienced both. it's also worth mentioning that after redoing my sound system even the crappiest of crap inverters works just fine

Yeah, I've looked into those kind of replacements...plenty out there for reasonable prices but they would completely mar the aesthetic value of the nice interior of my Bonny. That's why I was saying that only the touchscreens that would fill the whole double (might be 1.5) din stereo spot in my car would do.

I'm not saying that you're wrong about it being a power issue, but the BT headset I mentioned came with an adapter for an AUX jack and that solved my problem. So, either solution works.

the issue is the radio is connected to the same "power source" that your "phone" is now connected to.
so if any component in that chain does not control the power noise (that is what the noise is coming from your power system)
you INJECT that noise into your audio stream the moment you "link" the devices together (power not audio)
this is why if you use a seperate battery pack to charge the phone you will not get this noise. your battery pack is "isolated" from the car's power system literally physically.
I am only talking about the typical whine pop crackle high pitched noise you get the moment you plug in your charger. IE clear no noise plug in chargers Head burster sounds start coming out of your speakers
that noise is a "power issue" you can't eliminate the power issues (except by eliminating your alternator??) but you can filter it. some devices (chargers) do this better than others
the BT unit works because you "broke" the chain. (no audio cable going from the PHONE to the RADIO)

Again, I'm not denying what you're saying. You're absolutely correct. However, OP was asking for the best BT unit to plug into the jack, not how to solve the issues with cables and power sources. I was simply providing my opinion and experience along the lines of what he was asking for.

Aux Bluetooth car adaptors?

Anyone know of an adapter that can plug into the aux jack on a car that has Bluetooth on board so I can be fully wireless in the car? Been looking but if someone has one they can recommend it would be great.

Search eBay or amazon. I have one from miccus that I use in my range rover. No issues. If I'm streaming music via Bluetooth and a call comes in, it hands over the call to the factory Bluetooth radio. Once calls are over, it automatically switches back to music.

this is what ive been using. routes both music and phone calls through speakers. just had to get a cable to go from this to the aux in on my stereo. charges with the same type of cable as phone and a full charge lasts quite a while.

It's very small, and you can use it without the power cable to reduce clutter. The battery lasts ~6 hours. Sound quality is good, but it won't turn on automatically when you start the car.

I got this one..works without any problems..imo the only downside, the battery lasts only about 2 hours.

Maybe this advice wont help you a lot, but IMO this partial solutions wont get you completely satisfied. I already tried it and finally I decided to replace my OEM stereo with one from Kenwood with built-in BT from Parrot and I could not make a better decision...

I have the parrot mki9200 and the org. Ford Radio , works like a charm.
But if your radio allready have bt (headset) , you might only need to change the multimedia box to support ad2p

Ok I'm assuming you want it for your HTC One. Because, HTC One has Apt-x compatible bluetooth 4.0 and that is a god bless. Even iphone 5 doesn't have it. But, you need to have an apt-x compatible device at the other end too so that you'll fully utilize this cd quality sound option.
Simply put; what you'll search for is an apt-x receiver. Try Avantree Cara, Kinivo BTC450 or HTC Stereo Clip (A200). They all are aptx compatible and with the HTC One they sound beautiful. BTW HTC Stereo clip only streams music.
I've chosen Avantree because it had better reviews.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. A2DP is old news.

I'm using Sony mw600 for a long time for car and for biking. Recommended!

I like that one from the Amazon link that doubles as a hands free calling adapter as well. I had no idea these things existed. Im going to follow the thread a bit more and do some research into them. I am VERY interested in using this method. Coming over from an iPhone I miss the single cable to control and charge my phone through my stereo in the truck. I didnt think of that when I was getting my Android phone. I guess I assumed that the USB cable would work like it does on the iPhone once I plug it into the USB port on my stereo.

this is what i also use. battery life is pretty great. and it is aptx compliant

Well stay away from this one. It lasted all of one day for me and now it wont turn on or charge. Best Buy wont take it back as well.

I've been using this one in my car, very nice, audio quality is good thanks to being able to handle aptX. The dongle has an onboard microphone that you can use for calls, and also has two buttons at the top for previous/next track when playing music. Overall, pretty nice.

I have two issues with this particular bluetooth adapter. The first is that it only remembers one device pairing, so you'd have to go through the whole pairing process if you wanted to use other devices with it. The second was that in my car, I experienced a ground loop buzzing. I can't really explain to you what the phenomenon is, and it doesn't happen in everyone's car, but I ended up getting one of these which successfully got rid of the buzzing. You plug this thing in between the bluetooth adapter and your AUX port.

I actually have used both the Kinivo BTC450 and the Belkin one linked by evancg, here is my comparison of the two:
Belkin Bluetooth Car Hands-Free Kit
Worse audio quality than the Kinivo.
Magnetically attaches to a self-adhesive disc that you stick on your car, so you can stow away the dongle if you want.
Only one large, single button to answer calls or start/stop music.
Can remember more than one device pairing.
Kinivo BTC450
Better audio quality than the Belkin due to aptX.
The dongle has a self-adhesive back so it's stuck directly on your car.
Has a large face button for answering calls and starting/stopping music, and also two dedicated buttons on top for previous/next track.
Can only remember one device pairing, so it's inconvenient if you're using more than one device with the Kinivo.
Overall, I like the Kinivo over the Belkin because the audio quality is better on the Kinivo, and it also has previous/next track buttons, so I can change tracks without having to reach for my phone. I only wish the Kinivo could remember at least two or three device pairings, though, since I also have an iPod, iPad, and a few other phones in my household.

I have the Kinivo BTC450. I drive a lot for work, and it is great! No problems at all, some say you may need a ground loop isolator, but I didnt. Calls are clear on both ends, and audio quality IMO is on par with hardwired.
