Evo to Ipod Dock Adapter DIY

I would like to be able to connect my Evo to my car so that I can listen to Pandora using the car stereo. Unfortunately my car only has an Ipod dock connector.
Would it be possible to create an adapter that will allow you to connect an HTC Evo to an Ipod dock and output audio?
I have seen something similar being done with a T-Mobile G1.

Is it just as simple as getting a Ipod dock extender cable like this one:

and cutting off the male and of this cable and soldering it to a male end of microusb cable?

this is a huge area where android needs improvement.

There's no audio through the Evo USB port. I was searching for the same thing last night. I have a logitech ipod speaker: (can't post links)

What I'm thinking about doing is to hardwire the bluetooth adapter to the inside of the speaker. Then get the 5v from the dock and make a cable or adapter to go to the Evo's mini usb port. It's not the best solution, but I do have all of the parts already. If I didn't, headphones would suffice.

find the schematic for the ipod dock and solder a headphone jack to the audio inputs on the connector and you're done. I have done the same thing and it worked just fine for my friend that I did it for.
the thing that sucks about that is you will need an extra cable to charge the phone.

Hence my bluetooth idea.

I did some digging around a couple weeks ago and came across this

It sucks you need the 3.5 adapter, but better than letting letting a perfectly good dock sit and collect dust.

I just ordered a couple of these last week. My car has an ipod adapter, and this should let me connect to that and connect the 3mm to my EVO.
It's coming from Hong Kong so may be a bit longer before it's delivered. I'll report back when I get it.

I had the same problem, I think the best solution is to go Bluetooth. This will future proof you for phone changes down the line as well. Long story short, here is the best solution I've found and it works great! Just connect it to your ipod cable and stream over Bluetooth. So far it has worked with everything ipod, iPhone and iPad that I own, especially my custom installed iPhone stereo connector.
Just look up item number 190402178083 on eBay.

Step 1: Buy some Sugru or ShapeLock
Step 2: Buy Cheapie $1 headphones
Step 3: Buy iPod female Dock connector and MicroUSB Male end
Step 4: Use Pinout.ru to connect the points appropriately (iPod dock connector pins are pretty small and you must work quickly or your will melt the plastic, do not forget the internal resistors if needed for your application)
Step 5: Wrap it up in Sugru or Shapelock (use hairdryer to smooth it out with your hands)
Step 6: Paint and Enjoy!
Creating custom cables and docks and such is really not that difficult, just need some decent soldering skill and patience.

FIPO Bluetooth
I use this in my BMW for streaming over the bluetooth to the stereo. Works great and convient to just start the car and the Evo start playing music/podcast/etc.

Some of us do have the necessary skills, but do not want a ugly wire staring us in the face. Also the components themselves tend to get expensive when ripping apart 3 different cords for parts... not to mention when someone tries this and melts something, then you have to go through the hassle of ordering more components. That is the main reason we come here, because someone may already be on the job.
Now..... if your offering to do it, and you have a pricetag and are willing to offer support in case it doesn't work or kills our phones or car stereos, then I am all ears. But definitely thanks for the link.
As far as BT goes, the one poster is kind of right, I think the phone industry is betting on bluetooth, although its been 15 years, and BT performance is still at best Mediocre.

True, But there are those of us with drive to do something unique and have something that fits our needs exactly. DealExtreme.com is a great place to buy the cables to be ripped up and dollar stores can be a real treasure trove. Craft/ART stores also have a lot of things which can be easily repurposed.

I used to be a person who did his kind of work in college, but it is time consuming and repetitive. Plus, this is likely a market of people who are not willing to spend great amounts of money on handmade products. Even if someone charged $30 each it would not be worth the average techies time, but a worthwhile effort for a high school or college student with the drive to learn and perfect.

You are correct in MOST scenarios!
It is more of an issue not with the BT technology itself rather the way it is popularly implemented. BT does have the ability to send out very high quality audio streams and many of which are nearly lossless in quality. The issues are with the device that streams and the device that receives. The chosen connection type between the two devices must be mutual. Problem is that most BT devices streaming A2DP use only SBC coding of varied bit rate and quality.
Now if you have a really well done setup that is very thought out you can have your EVO sending out a pure 320kbps MP3 or AAC or other compatible stream direct with no conversion being done in real time to a BT receiver which is MP3, etc. stream compatible and has an excellent, typically non-chip integrated, DAC with a nice buffered output. Problem is that many BT receiver chips are made to be as cheap as possible, have crappy dacs, and push out very little power (or simply have no buffer at all) to even crappier speakers. When you combine that with real time conversion of MP3 and other formats to SBC at an even lower bit rate, you have an even worse experience.
IMO, the headphone output on the EVO does not sound that good and if you have a car that does accept MP3 320k BT streams and you use an alternative media player like meridian that allows that kind of behavior, then it should be fine for even above average car audio.

Well, that was a mouthfull. Thanks though, it helps a little. I did spend quite a while researching different Bluetooth headsets. But alas, as you have pointed out, although most of what is considered to be high end headsets, still only use bluetooth 2.0. The EVO also doesn't do a very good job at streaming bluetooth. Pandora and Music Player skip horribly. I was not aware that Meridian did a better job. I guess, that might have been another option.
As far as the bluetooth headsets go though, if your looking for A2DP, the selection is still limited, unless you want a dongle type headset, which IMO, you might as well use a wire. The Motorola, Rocketfish and Jabra headsets of top end just don't do as good a job as seating properly, unless you spend 50+ dollars on a custom ear piece.
There really are a lot of trade-offs in audio performance, but a good set high quality ear buds or headphones are hard to beat. Then comes the Car audio as well as home audio into play. I use mine as a MP3 player both on the go and in the car. My car has a Audio In jack, so I am happy with that.
I ordered a E5 Amplifier to go with mine, it should be here in a week or two. While my headset has finally broken in, I could do with about 10-20% more volume, but I am hoping for a little improved base since it will have the power to push my Vmoda Remix.

Yeah, The E5 is a decent beginner set. You may want to look at building a CMoy at some point, make sure to use slightly larger electrolytic caps and good film caps (resistors don't matter as much). If you make one with good parts and socketed chip, you can roll in to your flavor and it will take portable amps that are $100 or more to beat it. As far as kit amps go, its hard to beat a Mini3 for $100 to put together yourself.
I only say this as a person who actually owns a $450 Portable Amp and $575 Custom triple driver In-ear's. Don't even get me started about the stuff that is at home (I have way too much audio crap!)
BTW - you can make your own custom silicone ear pieces by using some Sugru or if you know an audiologist, you can get some of the Westone two part silicone that they normally use for getting impressions. As with everything, be careful and YMMV.
I wish i had the time to work on getting a USB host for the EVO so that we could use external USB DAC's (like the very small alien and grub).

Just ordered this too. The cable I ordered from Bestofferbuy . c o m was backordered, so I canceled. I agree with you, this should do the trick, saw it on another forum and looks like it will also allow some steering wheel functionality.
I ordered two through amazon, also found it on geek . com. Searching either with "Sprint Anycom Bluetooth A2DP Reciever" will get you there.

I got one but sadly does not work with my sony head unit in my car, but it did work with my co workers dock in the office

A little more expensive unit would be the blackberry gateway. Works very well, I have it setup in my car but streaming through pandora/slacker doesn't the greatest with it.

i bought the cable to plug into the front USB on kenwoods to the apple 30-pin adapter. I'm going to take it and plug it into the demo unit at Best Buy to make sure it works when it arrives, lol . If that fails, I'll be being getting I think it's a belkin flex dock with aux out, and i'll see if that works.

No. You need an iPod cable that accepts audio and will charge the device. Then it will work.

Only downside to this is that it won't charge the phone

Bought this a couple years ago back when it was only 10 dollars. Works pretty well. Depending on your headunit or dock, the remote controls to pause/skip tracks also work too.

For those who have it, how do calls turn out? Like if you had this hooked up, streaming music through your headunit..and you get a call, whats it do? If it plays the other person through the speakers, how good is the quality? Does the mic just work off of your phone?

It only supports A2DP so no sound comes through for phone calls. This can only be used to stream music, but the speakerphone works pretty well.

Got ya..ill probably invest in this when i get my new truck, so i can have my ipod hooked up at all times and for those other opportunities where i want to stream music from my/someone's phone.

Forgot to report back with results.
It works great and does what it says. very easy to hook up, but i notice a lack of bass... anyone have a solution for this?

I bought one of these a while ago to use with my old pre. Seemed to work well enough, except that most of the time I actually wanted to listen to my iPod instead of my phone, so I never really used it much. Ended up eventually buying a Sony deck that has full built in bluetooth in addition to an iPod connector, so this little doohickey has just sat in a box for months.
Ooh, I just thought of something! If I combine this thing I never use with this other thing I never use - an iPod FM Transmitter/Remote dongle, I could make myself a A2DP Bluetooth FM Transmitter with remote!

Best car stereo with bluetooth enable to stream music from Evo

Hey does any one is using your evo to stream music using the bluetooth pair ?
I want to buy a car stereo that have usb and bluetooth ready to stream music from my evo.
I have seen a couple of videos on youtube they have blootooth but no usb I want to have both options
any suggestion it will be appreciate.

I have a Alpine w505 and I use bluetooth streaming but not sure if you can connect to a cable usb. The phone contacts and call logs even transfer.

Care to provide details on the charger used? Does it stay paired/charged long enough to hide it out of sight completely and have it automatically work when I turn the car on and hit play on PowerAmp?

I just went to walmart and found an old nokia charger that has the same plug size as the belkin (had to pick it out with the belkin in hand, was kind of an "i hope this fits" purchase). Got it home, plugged it into the cig lighter, got power and everything worked fine so I hardwired it to the headunits remote power wire (the blue one for amplifiers) and have everything tucked nicely behind the dash. It turns on automatically with the radio, so all you have to do is turn on bluetooth on your phone to pair it and your good to go!

Nice!! I'm still factory stock with a ghetto rigged aux in to my cd changer, so this might not work for my situation since I dont really have any amps hooked up to trigger power.

You can tap the charger into any 12v power source in the car, the amp wire was just the easiest for my situation. There are ignition wires you can tap into, or even find the power wire for the stock radio. Just grab a volt meter and start testing around, you'll find something. You can even tap into the cigarette lighter wires if you need to.

Bluetooth streaming works great, comes with an external mic you can mount on your visor for calls, can connect to like 10 devices and has an internal phonebook you can transfer contacts into so you can call from the deck. I just get in my car and it's connected, press play on either the deck or the phone and it starts playing(if I'm using bluetooth audio as the source on the deck of course.) It also works amazingly with my iPod, supports just about every function you can think of with good navigation and even has a mode where you can restore control of the music to the iPod itself in case you want to hand it to someone who doesn't want to figure out the deck's controls. You just plug it into the front with a standard usb port and it works.
I think there's also a cheaper version that has a smaller screen with less info, but otherwise nearly the same functionality. I know Sony has some other ones now too that can actually hold an iPod within the deck itself now too. I don't think they have a cd player though.

Unless you guys are running Cyanogen, doesn't the BT sound like crap with the low bitpool? I've played with a few A2DP devices with the Evo (headsets mostly), and the sound was un-listenable. Distorted, compressed, and very lo-fi. It was much better with CM, but I like Sense.

I decided to give a shot to this model Clarion CZ500 after many days of searching and reading reviews of a lot of car stereos.
The Clarion CZ500 it seems very stable and have what I am looking for it.

I just installed the Clarion CX609 (double din) from SonicElectrolux. It sounds great, I couldn't be happier. Comes with a mic that you can put wherever you like.

I have a model EXTREMELY similar to this:

and I LOVE it. The only one thing I don't like is that it's VERY bright, but I drive at night so that makes a bigger difference to me than others.

I just installed a DUAL XHD7714. $120 at best buy. It has every feature I would like. Bluetooth, HD, front USB and Aux inputs. I'm pretty happy with it.

Is there a music dock for the Evo anywhere?
I'm NOT talkin about a car dock, or a charging/syncing dock or just external speakers that plug into the headphone port...
I mean a dock like the millions of them that are available for the iPhone that is an actual stereo where the phone docks into it and charges/plays music at the same time..
I have looked everywhere and cant find one.. seems like the only thing that the iPhone has that my Evo doesnt that I actually want

You're not going to find anything made specifically for the EVO. The best bet is to find a universal one that has USB charging capabilities. I can't recall one off the top of my head but I'm sure they are out there.

Yeah, I really wasnt expecting to find an "EVO specific" one but I cant even find a universal one that's not a complete piece of crap that is so inconvenient to use that it's not worth it...
Am I the only one that wants one of these or what? There has to be a bir market for a really good universal one that non-iPhone users can buy... Maybe I'm missing something

I want one of these. I am actually in the process of making one out of wood. I am thinking of shaping it like a regular dock, and using a good acoustical wood. Got the idea from here.
I am thinking this would work great. Maybe take a charger and run it up so that you can plug it in, and use the acoustics of the wood to amplify the sound. Just a thought.

So there are no MicroUSB docks anywhere??

I am thinking this would work great. Maybe take a charger and run it up so that you can plug it in, and use the acoustics of the wood to amplify the sound. Just a thought.

I would think your best option would be to just get a bluetooth speaker set or one designed for the ipod and use a ipod>bluetooth adapter like this one.

I had seen one of these back a while ago but I guess I just forgot about it... That does seem like the best option. I've never used bluetooth to stream music but I assume it works well and will play with music on my SDcard as well as Slacker and the like?

Absolutely. I have a set of bluetooth headphones that are really sweet and i use them with pandora, music app, audiogalaxy etc...

My wife was asking this just the other day. She hates plugging in to the ear phone jack. I might try that bluetooth receiver idea.

I used the FIPO for quite a while (till I lost it) I think there was a guy on there that was selling them for cheap (around $10 IIRC), but it worked flawlessly every time and the sound quality was not bad at all....

The problem is the HDMI out: there is no "dock" connector, just USB (which IS host capable, somewhere on that chip) and the HDMI connector.
HDMI encodes the audio into blank space of the video stream, so you need signal processing to seperate the two: that's too close to the DO NOT CROSS line for manufacturers. There aren't many products that do that (right now), and I don't know if there will be. However I found this one in my travels:

Is the only thing I can find that comes close to an audio extractor for HDMI. And it has an extra 3 inputs!
So you could get the HDMI dock, the HDMI adapter cable, this doodad, a receiver (or a digital audio to analog converter and THEN to a receiver), and then go out to your speakers. Of course that assumes the software/firmware on the EVO can just play audio out that end: because it is HDMI you would have to have a video signal of some kind going down the wire to activate the link. I suspect that last part would be the easiest part. Though, as developers would probably love something like this too.
Yet another case of DRM being a pain in the ass. in this case, we can thank Intel for being able and willing to sue companies into the ground for not following the HDMI rules.
One final note: if there is HDMI plugged in, all other audio stops (ie bluetooth, headphone jack and builtin speaker). I have not tested this, but this is what HTC said on their tech support forum when I asked.

Does not seem to be vaporware, and on the first link, is $128, which is a steal coming from the pro A/V market. Kinda high for us regular consumers, but for that market it's almost free.

FM Transmitter Question

Okay, I have an older car (2001 Dodge Stratus)
The stereo is not stock but it is still old and does not have a USB or 3.5mm connection. I used to use my ipod for music so I bought a --static.bhphoto.com/images/images345x345/424579.jpg--- for my car. (It plugs into the cigarette lighter and connects usb to ipod connection).
If I take the connector out I can run USB to Micro USB for my Galaxy s3 and it will charge. However if I go onto google music the sound will not come through my car speakers.
Can my device do this? Do I need a new device, that goes into my cigarette lighter? Do I just need a new stereo? I thought I would be able to still use the same FM transmitter via usb but it seems to not work. Are there 3.5mm cigarette lighter FM transmitters I could use instead? Any help would be awesome. Thanks so much ahead of time.

Play to your radio over your phone's Bluetooth. I've only had it for two days, but it's working really well. I've called over it, and the other end didn't realize it was over speaker, so it's nice and clear. You can charge your phone too out of the device, but it's a lot easier to just jump into your car and it sync on its own and just start playing music.

I guess I didn't explain clear enough, I'm sorry.
This device receives the Bluetooth from your phone, then transmits over your car's radio.

It's seems like a high price, but for all of the features it's a pretty decent deal. I bought it from newegg. They have/had a promotion for ten dollars off.

If you don't mind having to plug in some cables, there are plenty of FM transmitters out there that use a regular 3.5mm connection (to connect the transmitter to your phone) for Audio.
Some of them run on batteries, others you have to plug into your cigarette lighter. Some of those offer a micro USB cable or a USB port to charge your phone with, others don't.
Just look around on amazon or ebay. My experience with those transmitters wasn't good but it's been a while. Maybe newer devices work better.
Definitely get one where you can choose from a wide range of channels not one of those where you only have like 3 channels. Because depending on where you live there might be many radiostations that can overlay the signal of your transmitter. You have to find a channel that isn't used in the area where you usually drive around in.
