[Q] Poor Voice/SMS/MMS Reliability with Galaxy Note 2 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Below is a thread I opened on Sprint's discussion board as thread #103192. Sorry I can't link as this is my first post. Anyone have any suggestions here at XDA?
Hello, I am a 15 year customer of Sprint. I have been having a great deal of problems with my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 since I purchased it from a Sprint store on the release date of October 25th 2012. I purchased the first box sold at store location #898 located on RT 59 in Naperville, IL.
Please assume all problems below are seen with no third party applications installed that may potentially interfere with quality of service. Wireless settings are set to use Sprint's "LTE/CDMA" preferred network mode in the Western Chicagoland Suburbs. Assume Sprint's "Connection Optomizer" is enabled. Assume my PRL is being reset at a daily rate both at home and at the office.
Please give me suggestions for correcting these problems, or reply here if you are experiencing the same problems with your Galaxy Note 2.
No Incomming Calls Around Office Location
I work in a 6 story office building located at 1444 N Farnsworth Ave in Aurora, IL 60505. When I enter the proximity of my office (roughly 3 block diameter) I am no longer able to recieve incomming calls. My phone does not ring, I do not receive text messages, I do not recieve voicemails. When attempting a test call from a office landline phone to my cellphone, I get the message "The number you have reached is not in service, this is a recording" or a busy signal. When attempting a test call from a cellphone (Verizon) to my cellphone, I get my voicemail after about 20 seconds of ringing on the line (with no response of the call on my phone). These cases are constant after about 10 tries with each method. Once I leave the proximity of my office, I get a barrage of text messages and voicemails that have piled up throughout the day delivered to my phone. This has happened every day since I purchased this phone. This problem did not occur with my old phone (HTC EVO3D) and does not occur with co-worker's phones (Samsung Galaxy S2/S3) which are on the Sprint network. It may be worth it to note that there are a large number of point to point microwave link dishes (high speed internet from the john handcock center) on the roof of the building, as well as Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T carrier level cellular transcievers.
Outgoing Calls Lose Connection Within 1 Minute
Outgoing call made from my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 fail within roughly 1 minute. I have had times where phonecalls lose connection after 20 seconds, some after 40 seconds, some at 1 minute. There are rare occasions where I have been able to hold a call longer than 5 minutes, but this accounts for <10% of my attempts. I have this problem calling landlines, cellphones, and Sprint Customer Care. When the call terminates, it looks as if the phone is ending the call, rather than service being lost. The CDMA network signal strength meter stays at the same level while in the call, at the point of termination, and after termination of the call. These cases occur in situations where signal strenth is between 75%-100% and the phone is in a non-moving position.
Text Message (SMS/MMS) Errors
I have problems in both my office and home with sending and recieveing text messages. In my office, I cannot send or recieve text messages (within the previously mentioned 3 block radius) about 70% of the time. Once I leave this area, I recieve my day's worth of incomming text messages that have built up, and am then able to send messages as well. Once I enter my home area loacted at Forest View Rd in Lisle, IL 60532, I cannot send text messages, but can recieve them. When attempting to send text messages, I encounter and "Error Code 97". I believe this has something to do with my Sprint supplied "AirRave" Femptocell by Airvana, as this has been a recurring problem in the past with my HTC EVO3D as well. Text messaging seems to work fine in most other areas I have been in other than the office and home.
The Good
My data service seems to work great through 4G LTE, 3G, and WiFi. Never really seem to have a problem with this, even in areas where the aforementioned problems occur. Overall the rest of the phone works great as well, when using it as a tablet, moreso than a phone (since voice/text keep failing).

Maybe you got a faulty phone.. get a replacement?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

Yeah, that's my plan tomorrow.

Unplugging my AirRave at home has solved the problem. It must have been keeping me locked onto its tower and not letting me roam onto Sprint's network. This thing has been junk since day 1. They really need to work on their firmware.

Evo 4G Always Digital Roaming and Slow Data (Help?)

Precursor: I recently purchased an EVO 4G online and had it shipped up here to Canada and after some phone calls/fiddling I managed to get it onto the Telus network. I can make and receive calls and send/receive sms with no difficulties. Data seems to be working (I get the 3g icon with up and down arrows and can surf the net), and mms seem to be sending.
Which brings me to the issues at hand:
1) My 3G speeds are super weak (between 100kbit and 140kbit down and 100-600kbit up). If I stand in the same place and use my Touch Pro 2 (they both show the same number of bars) I get 800-900kbit/sec.
2) My EVO 4g -ALWAYS- says "Digital Roaming". I've updated the PRL with the latest Telus one (off the internet) as well as the one off my Touch Pro 2 but see no difference. I don't incur any roaming charges, but the phone always thinks it's roaming.
3) Last but not least, I'll often get a pop-up that says Data Call Failure Error Code 67. Sometimes I'll go for hours without seeing it, and sometimes it'll pop up every 5 minutes.
Any input/insight is welcome!
-Xan
P.S. If you want tips on how to get your EVO onto Telus, drop me a PM.
I will love to have feedback, as I get the "data fail" error often while roaming...
Update: It seems that when I force my phone to use only EVDO, the Data Call Failure Error Code 67 goes away. Perhaps related?
Just following up on my own thread: It seems the Error 67 is because my 1x data login details are incorrect (a side effect of the sprint radio).
Still wondering on the other questions, anyone?
Xan, how did you get HTC Evo to work on Telus? I'm almost at the point of returning this one that I got from Texas. I have tried for 24hours to no avail.
Please help!!

I just had the same issue. Luckily I downloaded an app off the market called 2g 3g switchand it resolve several issues I had including yours. There are three options one of them is the cdma NAM switch in which you could select NAM 1, another option is to leave in automatic, and third if you have any 2g and 3g switching issues you can select hybrid. Note after switching wait probably 5 minutes and sometimes try again, also you may have to reset.

Orange Desire dropping calls and diverting calls to VM

It seems to have got worse over the last few days. At times I need to make more than one attempt to dial out, the calls drops unexpectidely, and people who ring me sometimes get redirected to Voicemail even though my phone is on with good signal. Have phoned orange multiple times about it, and after diagnosing with them, still at a loss. Anyone else expereincing similar?

P.s. the phone is not rooted, however very recently I used ADB to install all apps to SD.
oh, the phone has also rebooted a few random times on it's own aswell over the last few days. I think it's all linked.
Have inserted the sim card into another phone. On my desire, while testing, out of 8 incoming calls, 2 went to Voicemail. On my other phone, out of 20 incoming calls, 0 went to voicemail. Seems that it's a fault with the phone and not Orange reception. Going to phone HTC.
Suggested I do a hard reset. I might aswell root my phone and install stock if that is the case.
Any suggestions before I waste a day?
All my previous devices, were on orange, the service was awful, texts coming hours and somtimes days late, calls going str8 to vm, slow data ect, when i got my desire i changed to tmob, and ive never looked back

Hi
I used to have an X10, that frequently put peoples calls direct to VM in full reception (even with a mate standing next to me calling it went to VM). Now i have the desire and still the same issues, I get random texts telling me I have missed calls when the phone never rang. So I'm not sure if its Orange or Android. I was previously on o2 and didn't have these issue
Update the radio part ?

If you are on GPRS (i.e. no 3G coverage at your location), and you are actively using the GPRS connection (including for background data), then it will block incoming calls as if the phone were in a call already. This is a limitation of GPRS*, and it is the same on all UK networks and all phones.
This doesn't happen with 3G/HSDPA, or if you are using Wi-Fi for your data.
I don't know if this is the OP's problem, because it shouldn't cause dropped calls once established (or affect outgoing calls, I think) but it is the effect behind what some of you are describing.
*technically, it doesn't happen with certain GPRS devices (class A?), but there are very few such phones, and there are certain network measures to avoid it, but no network uses them.
so if somebody could write an app that suspends data connection if on 2g and allows data for 3g only, then problem solved?? Obviously only for people who are not really bothered by loss of data sometimes.

I'm always on GPRS party because there's no 3G/HSDPA at home nor at where I work. So I've hard-set the phone to be GSM only and I've never missed a called so far. Even had calls come in mid facebook usage....
Edit; Tried it again now,
Box standard non-branded desire, Orange Pay As You Go.
a G icon to the left of my reception bars.
I was updating the weather widget both Up and Down arrows where lit up.
Rang from my office phone to my desire..No problems at all.......
my data connection is usually switched off (saves battery), so that isn't the cause,

Odd. Maybe Orange changed something - I've never tried with them. The network feature is called DTM, but I didn't think anyone had turned it on. I frequently miss calls on O2 because of this.
The Desire also appears to frequently lie and reports the wrong symbol much of the time - so at work with only GPRS (in the middle of nowhere and we have our own cell on our site), mine often says H for HSDPA, and yet the same problem occurs. I suppose it's possible that you're actually on EDGE.
There's a thread about it here: ht tp://androidforums.com/htc-desire/68995-not-receiving-calls-when-browsing-gprs.html
used to have this problem with my x10 on orange until i flashed a new rom and updated the baseband, hasn't dropped a call since....... the wife recently upgraded her phone to desire hd and she is now having the dropping calls/forwarding to vm problem. i reckon its got to be something wrong with the radio orange are using, get it flashed and see if it helps? that is my plan with the missus phone!
I had this happen with my phone on o2 on 3g I notice my signal bar wasn't high though an drops easily. One day i got loads of delayed msgs an calls going straight to vm. I switched my setting to use 2g only an now no problems.

That's the same work around i have been using. 2G also seems better for battery life, so now I prefer it over 3G.
OP - my partner has been experience EXACTLY the same issues as you with her AMOLED Desire.
To the point where we are possibly going to root it soon, in the hope that a new ROM/radio will resolve the issues. Not sure how viable this is though...

Voicecalls not coming through whenever data is on

Guys
Noticed something funny with my Galaxy Nexus. Calls don't seem to be coming through whenever it is transmitting or receiving data on the 3G. I can still make calls no problem.
My previous phone (the N97) would disengage packet connection (a warning comes up) before the call comes through.
I'm still analysis the data but I am hoping that one of you has experience this before and can offer some insight.
I've done the following test:
1. Wifi and 3G on. Some calls come through, some goes to voicemail.
2. Wifi and 3G on - streaming a video from my NAS box - Some calls come through, some goes to voicemail.
3.Disengaged Wifi and 3G on - Some calls come through, some goes to voicemail.
4.Disengaged Wifi and 3G off (2G only) - Calls comes through fine (when I send text I get the volume bug).
5.Disengaged Wifi and Data on but only on 2G - Calls comes through fine.
In all above instances when the 3G/data is on, I make sure I am transmitting (I synch my hotmail account).
So is this normal (this is my first android phone)? Am I the only one or are there others?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks
***** Sorry for the question mark icon, I put [Q] down but didn't know by selecting the question mark, it overrides it************
Which network?
It's certainly not normal behaviour in Gingerbread and earlier at least (still waiting for my GN to be delivered). Even on 3G calls should be able to come through and then if needed decide to switch down to 2G if it decides it's needed.
Have you confirmed that you can actually make and receive call on 3G currently? Might be something wrong with your plan or your SIM.

I'm still testing but it does appear that whenever it's transmitting on 3G (3G or H in the icon) incoming calls go to voicemail.
I just did another test, in the previous tests I was just calling my voicemail service (901) but I decided to call my house phone and here's the strangest thing.
- With the wifi on and 3G I couldn't make any phone calls (apart from the voicemail), the calls just end. I turned off the wifi, tried making a call it works. Then turned on the wifi on again and I can make calls again. How bizarre.
I'm hoping it's a network issue but I won't know until say about a weeks time (if its a network issue it should have been fix within that period). But my first adventure with Android isn't going very well.
Rang O2 and it sounds like an issue with the network . According to them 3G was affect all over the country recently and still have issues in the London area.
I also put my sim back into my N97 and after numerous attempts was able to replicate the fault So happy.
But the customer support suggested that I should still go and get a replacement sim from the shops tomorrow since mine is quite old. From 2009 but still 3G enabled.
So fingers crossed that its def a network issue and not a fluke that it affected my N97.
How will a new SIM be able to work better? I thought, as long as it has 3G, it's all good?
My SIM is from 2008, I guess, so quite "old", as well...

Does SIM age really matter? I've been using the same SIM card since 2005.
I don't know if the age of the SIM matters, but what I do know is after I replaced my old SIM (AT&T) my data got faster (a few phones ago).
It never hurts to use a new SIM. The manufacturers change every few years (gemalto, etc) and I'd bet that newer is better...

[Q] Cant text at home unless roaming on Epic Touch

So this is my last hope for a solution to my problem. I got the Epic 4g touch almost a week ago. Had Sprint activate it and everything worked for the first 48 hours great. Three days after I got the phone I came home from work and could not send a text message. When I would send a message it would immediately fail and would receive old texts from people over and over. Very rarely a text would go through but then it would stop working again. My Voice and data works fine no issues. So I called Sprint tech support probably 10 times and they had me update PRL update profile they refreshed the data, disabled texts and re-enabled, factory reset. Basically everything they could and I told them I live in a apartment on the first floor next to a main highway and the coverage map says I should have near perfect signal. So they checked for outages and submitted a ticket to check the tower which came back as fine. When I am around town everything works including texts just when I am at the apartment the texting does not work. So Sprint sent me a Airrave. I went from 3 bars to 6 but still no texting. I rooted the phone updated the base-band to FB27 and my PRL version is 61086. So basically I am at a loss. One of the Sprint techs told me it could be a blockage from the concrete slab on the apartment but that makes no sense considering I have another t mobile phone and my roommate has a Verizon droid and neither has had problems and I can get 3g data and voice fine. I downloaded a program called Roam Control and when I am roaming in the apartment texts work fine but I do not want to have to roam all the time for texts. If anyone has any suggestions and could help that would be great.

i have a similar issue but mine is just that i dont get service in my home :/ i would suggest you sign up for google voice if you dont want to roam. Google voice is free for sprint user and you can text from your computer or anything with google voice such as a ipod touch. Also google voice has free visual voice mail. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googlevoice&hl=en
I would say hook up your phone to google voice. There is an app also in the play store to allow texts as well as voice calls to go over your wife instead through sprint. Maybe your phone is messed up?

out of service area - signal drops

since I received the phone last week, when I make or receive calls, sometimes the call will drop with the circle and slash saying "out of service area". a few seconds later all signal returns. data always works, only when voice does this occur.
happens more often on Bluetooth, but have experienced it at other times. Worked with advanced tech support on att, all seems well on their end. tried 3 different sims registered over the past week, same problem. note 2 did not have this issue.
anyone else having odd voice dropping?
EDIT: I turned on UTMS HD Voice using the hidden diagnostic menu. 5 test calls today and no signal drops/disconnects. Coincidence or something else???
UTMS HD Voice
Hi, IT Rider. I've been having similar problems with my GN4 Att. Dropped calls, mysterious disappearances of any network connection and so on.
I went into the hidden diagnostic menu to try to change the UTMS HD Voice, but I couldn't tell which tile on the diagnostic menu to choose for that.
Could you please enlighten me?
Thanks,

It maybe Sim card problem. Try to go to At&t store and get new card with secure elements. This are sims to work better.

Hate to bring this thread back, but this is EXACTLY what is happening to my mom's replacement Note 4. Original Note 4 was exhibiting similar problems, but wasn't showing "Out of Service Area". Internet and text messages are working just fine. Calls will drop at its leisure. Had two sim card swaps before getting a replacement unit mailed from AT&T.
AT&T submitted a case for our problem, but it may take up to five days to respond. I don't know who to blame now, Samsung or AT&T.
Has anyone resolved this issue. Having the same problem. Calls randomly drop after 45 sec up to 5 minutes. All data drops. Says "out of service area". Everything reconnects after 10 seconds. Only happens when making calls. Been doing it since activation of phone 2 months ago . Switched from straight talk to cricket 2 days ago. Hoped it would resolve the issue. It did not.
New Note 4 user here, same issue
Try cleaning the contacts on the SIM card and the phone. If it spends sometime in a pocket where it can accumulate lint it can cause problems. My old S3 had this issue as I carried it with me all the time and had the flip style case. After cleaning the contacts, just use a paper towel with some rubbing alcohol, it stopped happening completely.
