Folks,
I am trying to root my first gen Kindle Fire using the Kindle Fire Utility. One of the Options "5" is to install the latest TWRP 2.3.1.1. I have read about Wipe problems with this. How can I ensure that the KFU will install the older TWRP 2.2.1.1. Is it easily done by just copying the TWRP 2.2.1.1 file to the recovery folder within the KFU folder?
Thanks!
KFU actually tells you which version it`s installing last time I checked it was still downloading the older version. You can check it by dry running the program without the kindle plugged in read what it says in the terminal.

Actually, last time I checked KFU couldn't download TWRP. But maybe that's fixed.

Thanks for the replies folks .. I copied TWRP 2.2.2.1 in the "recovery" folder and the KFU checked for existing TWRP in the recovery folder and it installed it.
Thanks!

Last time I tried to root my Kindle Fire (1st Generation) TWRP's download failed. I think KFU's script puts the Kindle in fastboot before downloading TWRP or FFF. Is there another way to get TWRP, as KFU can't?
I don't use Windows, but looking at the KFU script, it seems as though it is supposed to download TWRP, rename it to twrp.img, and place it in a folder named "recovery".
So just create a folder named "recovery" and place it in your KFU folder, download TWRP from the TWRP website, rename it to twrp.img and run the script again to see if that works for you.
OK.
Before I try this again, does KFU download FireFireFire ok?
From what I've seen, it does.
I just used it today with no problems. The only problem I had was I also have an older version of KFU on and it doesn't work with 6.3. When I switched to the latest version and redid the drivers, FFF and TWRP went fine.
The present twrp download for KFU is 2.2.2.1 nothing has changed yet but that doesn`t mean that it wont soon. It appears that the new version has been fixed 2.3.1.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592681 .
I have read through this forum pretty thoroughly. I have tried to mess around with KFHD SRT and with KFFAide. With KFFAide it says it downloads the images necessary and then it hangs on waiting for device. The device is in fastboot, so I don't know why.
With KFHD SRT the last supported version was 8.1.4.
The only thing I did with this kindle is root it, but I want to go back to stock with a clean install. I downloaded the 8.4.6 bin but have no idea how to create a system.img. I tried doing an install from the internal storage but since it already has the same build, the kindle won't let me "upgrade my device"
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt
Have you tried copying the .bin to the root folder (the sdcard root, not the true root) then go to Settings -> About -> Device and click the 'Update Your Kindle' button?

Yes a couple of times. It's not working because I am trying to update to the same firmware as is on the kindle.

I haven't tried it myself, but KFFirstAide has an unroot option. Maybe use the factory reset in the Kindle settings?

We are past that..
I'm guessing either you don't have the drivers for fastboot installed or you didn't tell kffa no when it asked if u wanted to be put into fastboot. Check the device manager for a jem device with a yellow triangle next to it. If you find that while it is in fastboot mode, then download the drivers in my signature and extract them somewhere, then right click the device in the device manager and hit update drivers and point it to where my drivers are.

The drivers worked, I had to do some digging on getting them to install on Win 8. But was able to get it working. Thank you!
KFFA hangs on downloading images
trying to restore KFHD 8.9 . Got it into fastboot then KFFA starts downloading images. boot.img and recovery.img are OK but after it hangs saying "1 more to download" . Now i see it already for nearly an hour !
I downloaded the 8.4.6 bin but have no idea how to create a system.img.

That won't work. Images have to be made special for a fastboot flash. You can do a system restore and then let an Amazon OTA update get you up to date and stock.
These two links will help you restore.

..
I have a KFHD8.9 that I have been trying for days to get back to Factory 8.4.6 with OTA enabled.
After hours of reading and searching threads, I haven't found anything that helps.
This is what I have tried:
1. Use KF_SRT_v2.1 option2 to restore the 8.1.4 system.img
2. Flash boot.img and recovery.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot boot.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery recovery.img
3. Erase userdata and cache
4. Reboot the kindle. It comes up fine and in Device > About is shows version 8.1.4
5. Copied update-kindle-8.4.6_4620220.bin to the root of the Internal Storage
6. The Update Your Kindle button remains greyed out.
I have also used KFFirstAide option7 to restore 8.1.4 system, boot, and recovery
and then erased cache and userdata. Again, the Kindle comes up running 8.1.4 but
the Update Your Kindle button remains greyed out
I have also tried the following:
a. KFFA option 22. UnRoot The Kindle - Do This Before Sending Back To Amazon
(This seems to work because the Root Analyzer app shows the Kindle is NOT rooted)
b. KFFA option 19. Enable Amazon OTA Updates
c. Factory reset
d. The Sync button on the Kindle
I am still sitting at 8.1.4 and the Kindle will not update via Sync, nor will the
Update Your Kindle button become active so I can update via the .bin file on the SD Card.
If I ran KFFA Option41. Kindle Fire 2nd-bootloader + TWRP 2.4.4.0 for KFHD 8.9 would I
then be able to flash the 8.4.6 .bin file using TWRP? I seem to remember being able to
use TWRP to reflash the stock Amazon O/S on my original Gen1 Kindle.
I have done this a couple of times with the KFHD7 and the Update Your Kindle button always
activates and runs the .bin file with no problem. Why is the 8.9 Kindle any different?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
On that version you put it in the kindle update dir. That might not be the exact name since I'm going from memory. On later versions it goes in the root dir. Sorry I just saw you post.

Thank you K6TJS. I can't believe the solution was that simple. And I went back and checked the instructions on the Amazon updates page and for the 8.9" Kindle and it says to put it in the "Internal Storage" (root) folder, and also says "Do not drop the file into any other folder in Internal Storage". Because of that I have spent countless hours and restored this Kindle 5 or 6 times using both KFFA and SRT.
I will be hitting the THANKS button for your help. I wish I could hit it more than once. I wonder why there are so few replies in this Forum any more. People seem to have lost interest...
For the record, having to put the update.bin file into the kindleupdates folder changed somewhere between 8.1.4 and 8.4.6. After I updated to 8.4.6 the kindleupdates folder no longer existed. I put the 8.4.8 update.bin file into the root of Internal Storage and the Update Your Kindle button activated and ran fine.
Yes and I had same problem with Amazon's instructions. Glad you got it updated.

I have been trying to use the KFU to root, but at the end of the command prompt, it says Waiting on Device. I have left it like this for 15 minutes to no avail and I can interact fully with the kindle. I'm running 6.3.3 on the kindle and windows 8 on my laptop. I have tried installing the drivers but no matter what I do, the kindle still shows up as Kindle Fire in device manager, although if I click the drop down arrow, it says Android Composite ADB Interface. When I load up KFU, it registers that the device is connected and says ADB Status: Connected, but Boot Status is unknown. I don't know what to try, can anyone help?

Yes I can get to twrp, but I cannot boot into the OS. If I boot up and select boot normally, it goes to the orange kindle fire logo then the screen cuts off. I'd like install CM 10 which I have downloaded on my laptop.

Just use mount sd card option in twrp.
mount>check sd card >mount usb
should get a popup in windows>click view files
copy CM10 and Gapps to sd card
unmount usb in TWRP
wipe>factory reset
install Cm10 and gapps

Great, If you want to upgrade to CM11 you will have to upgrade twrp first.

So I am in a bind.
I had TWRP and N2K type utiltiy that was working. i tried to wipe and reset and here is where i am now.
so i have a first generation kindle fire. i load TWRP and get to recovery boot which brings me to team win. TWRP is version 2.6.3.0.
I do not have access to the kindle drivers. so the only thing i can do is access it though mount.
so i mounted the device and added the most recent update (changing it to update.zip) but its not working. it still starts with the blue kindle fire setting and only in TWRP. i cant recover it to normal. when i go into the device i only have 2 folder. TWRP and .android_secure.
i just want to know how to get back to factory settings. I tried using a kindle boot device but it wont recognized the kindle because it is only recognizing it as a usb drive.
any ideas? not sure what other information you need to help. please help - thanks!
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.
