[Q] Upgrading to JB with root? Help* - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So i have ics rooted with the snapdragon program. JB is coming out soon so if I am rooted and I get the update what will happen to my root? If the root will go away what is another option to upgrade to Stock JB and also have root?

There are various threads on this topic. You will lose root if you upgrade. You can always root again afterwards. Our you can use rootkeeper. But I'm not sure if it will work.

You will need to return phone to stock rom when update is released. Root might not be an issue but bloat will be required.
Don't worry about losing root. As soon as it's released there will be instructions on how to root. Devs rule!

I am already on stock and all my bloat is there nothing has been frozen, but otherwise u are saying root will remain? and also if i upgrade with the root can i get the phone bricked and will i loose any of my data?

When update is released back up your data to sdcard, remove card, run update via kies (I assume as this was the way my s2 skyrocket received updates) and then root again. Getting root back will not be an issue. We are still a week or 2 away... until then sit tight

Rooted a couple of days ago Now ICS...

So I rooted a couple of days ago. I havent flashed any roms yet. Now sprint is finally releasing ICS tomorrow and wondering a few things:
1. Should I update to it?
2. Do I loose root(IM guessing yes)?
I kind of want to wait for JellyBean....but
Thanks
You will lose root, updating is up to you. If it is FF18 with no changes then I don't see a point to doing the ota.

If you updated to FF18, 99% chance you already have what the OTA would give you.

Well you have 2 choices, maybe 3. Take the OTA and lose root, having to root it the exact same way you would get rooted FF18 anyways (because you have to flash the full firmware to obtain rooted FF18) or if the OTA isn't the same exact build that was leaked you will have to wait a couple days and still get rooted FF18 the same way is.
We do not know for certain the leak is the same as the OTA though it probably is. From a rooted phone you can flash an unrooted tar and root it or you can flash a rooted tar through ODIN. There is no root exploit that will give you root after you take the OTA you can flash it now or you can flash it later (assuming the leak is the OTA).
Rooted FF18 = Taking the OTA is irrelevant in all eventuality.
Has anyone tried the temp unroot and ota root keeper options in superuser?

Well if I understand what you are asking, it's late here so I might not. But I don't think anyone can try that yet as the OTA has not happened( few more hours to go I think) Should start to see it roll out here pretty quick and I would imagine someone may try doing just that.
I would expect a few changes in the OTA since FF18 came out 3 weeks ago. If it happens like the last OTA update, the official will be rooted soon and packed into a tar file that we can flash with Odin anytime we want or we can use it to go to stock rooted ICS. If you want to pass and wait for jelly bean, that could take awhile. You would have to update to the ICS update before you could get the next OTA.

[Q] Root now (keep stock), issues when Tmo sends JB update?

If I root using the toolkit and keep it stock, would I have any issues when Tmo sends out the JB update? I probably will just update via KIES since it will be faster. I mainly want root just for Titanium Backup. I miss it since getting my SGS3.

So, I should just root and not install CWR or another recovery? Like I said in my first thread, I just want to use TB, freeze or uninstall crap apps, etc. I will eventually install a custom ROM, not anxious to do that yet though. I had fun doing it with my G1 and SGS1, just dont feel like messing with that stuff at this point. TB is a must though.
You cannot root without flashing recovery. Just flash CWM Touch from my signature, and when the OTA update comes out, get it from Sammobile and flash it through CWM.

You need to flash custom recovery to inorder to access root. Afterward flash back stock recovery if you want or ready for ota updates.

WRONG.... You do NOT have to flash a custom recovery to get root access.

[Q] OTA update hesitant

Someone flashed me to 4.1.1 and told me not to do the OTA update when I get it and I am unsure his reasoning. I have just received the OTA update and am hesitant to do so cause he told me I shouldn't this is my build.

Please let me know if I should accept the OTA or not I am very noob when it comes to this stuff and thanks
Maybe he rooted your phone too, and didn't want the update to break root.

Is that the only reason not to accept the OTA, he did root it but that can always be redone. If I accept it I wont loose my data saved on my phone will I? I shouldn't I would think

The update won't install. Its best to just flash a rooted version of said update.

Root doesn't prevent OTA updates from installing. However, installing the update will unroot the phone unless you use something like CWM which can keep root for you.

I tried the OTA but it shows an android with a Red sign in his belly. So basically I want to get my phone back to where I can get updates straight from Google and I don't need my phone rooted. Is this possible? If so I need instructions lol Much appreciated!

Won't brick phone, but you will lose root. There are ways around this... root keeping apps. But if you want to know the best way around it, flash a custom ROM.
What is an easy method to completely unroot my phone?
Full unroot in supersu. Note that if your system status says modified, you cannot get the ota.
Its honestly not worth the trouble imo. We could all be enjoying the next update for a whole month before you ever get it via ota. Just wait till its released and Odin flash the new firmware.

[Q] Confused about going from rooted stock 4.1.2 -> 4.3

What is the correct path for this? My current phone is all stock but just rooted. I figure I'm going to lose root after the upgrade but is the re-rooting procedure just the same for 4.1.2? How will my root apps be affected?
Also there is another thing. When I press "check for firmware update" nothing happens. Like its not even checking. I might have installed some firmware check block app but I don't remember. Any suggestions?

Hm ok. I would just feel warm inside using 100% Sprint then a manual root but thank you.

If you are wanting to simply run the 4.3 OTA (whenever that is), I would suggest unrooting your phone and waiting for 4.3. Just remember that you won't be able to use backup tools to restore your apps once you're unrooted. Accepting OTA updates on a rooted device can have unsavory consequences, so make sure you don't accept the OTA unless you have restored your device back to stock.
If you want to retain root and continue running business as usual, just don't accept the OTA update when it gets sent out. I'm sure that our stellar dev community will begin pushing out 4.3 ROMs within a reasonable time frame after the official update is released.
As it stands, the official 4.3 update keeps getting pushed out, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it just yet.
