thread categories - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

ok so i am new to the epic 4g touch. i don't understand the separation between the android development and the original android development sections. someone please enlighten me so i am not posting or looking in the wrong section.

Original Development is for custom work like a kernel or roms built from source like cm10. Android Development is for everything else. There is actually some original work there but it's mostly tweaked or themed variations or leaks.
Bottom line don't start a thread in either section unless you made something.

[Q] New MIUI keyboard

I have the 7.15.11 build of MIUI, with the new UI tweaks, but not the new keyboard. Can anyone give me a time when I could expect the new keyboard to be implemented in the Evo 4G builds?
You might visit miui.us and ask in their forums, or maybe in the EVO 4G themes/apps section if you are able to post there.
OR take a few mins to help out others and get your post count to 10 and then ask in the MIUI thread in the developers section.

Silly question about kernels

I wonder what'd be the differences among "sense kernels", "miui kernels" and "aosp kernels".
In my perception there should be no difference.
I mean, which kernel setting or device driver would harm, say, CM7 against MIUI?
Based on my humble knowledge, there is Sense kernel because of the closed sourced framework(?) used by HTC on their phone. It is done so as to prevent from people anyhow porting to other non-htc devices?
As for MIUI and AOSP, I personally believe because of the MIUI framework being different from AOSP as it tailored to be more iPhone look alike?
Above those are view coming from a noob, do correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks

That's really new to me, that the Sense UI needs some kernel level (closed source) stuff to be included!
I thought that the Semse UI was something on top of the grapfics layer, well above the kernel.
But of course, I can easily be wrong.
Wrong section - It's a question - so Q & A

Maybe you are right, but it's also related to development.
And, moreover, 50+% of posts here are questions.
How can I move this to Q&A?
Wrong section. Should be in the Q&A section.
I'm sure one of the mods will move it soon.
but this is not a post, its a new thread
"Silly question"

The only really silly question is the unasked one.
Where there seems to be thousands of silly answers.
If mine is an "already asked and answered" question, please point me to the source.
Otherwise, please, either answer or refrain from posting.
Thanks in advance, as usual.

you only wrong to open a thread to ask something in the dev section..you can post in dev only when u developed something that you wanna share..not to ask somethign related to dev
about the different kernels..for what i know aosp and miui are about the same
sense kernels are different because htc did a lot of changes in its kernels..and these changes make the kernel incompatible to work with every rom..it works only on sense rom...and in the same way a sense rom work only with a sense kernel
htc deliberately make different methods in the kernel, and different methods call in the frameworks..the only working match is sense rom+sense kernel..just that

Instead of making comments about the question, we should answer
Sense Kernels: These kernels are modified kernels based on Google's Android kernels, but also includes some tweaks and options for Sense UI. If you're planning to use Sense included ROM, you must use these.
MIUI Kernels: These kernels are modified for MIUI release ROMs.
AOSP Kernels (Android Open Source Project Kernels): These kernels are the ones that Google developed and published the sources. If you are not planning to use Sense or other manufacturer based UI interfaces, you can use these with AOSP ROMs.

AOSP and S3

So, I've been lurking around the forums for awhile and trying to find a rom that is simply pure android 110%. Surely, I have found CM10's, AOKP's, KANG, etc etc, however I couldn't seem to find any rom that was just pure ANDROID! No extra mods, themes, etc... Like on a Stock Gnex, so my question being, is there one I am over looking ? I tried googling it to no avail.
Thanks (=
EDIT: Such an idiot, I posted in General instead of Q&A. Could someone move this to Q&A please? x.x
Well my cyanogenmod 10.1 4.2.2 is pretty close. There are the added tweaks but I like them. If you want a true nexus then you better also pull your ext SD card out. That's the only thing keeping me away.

Ya I have to agree that 10.1 is pretty darn close

Paranoid Android is also really close, as is AOKP. They all have tweaks, its just a matter of which set of tweaks you like the most. As mentioned, the only way to get pure aosp is to get a nexus.

is there something in particular you're looking for in a nexus rom or something you're seeing that you dont want? because otherwise, the aosp-based roms that have been named here will generally look exactly like a stock nexus device. i know Faryaab has assembled a SuperNexus rom. i used to run the 4.1 version on my S2 last year, but the S3 one is only for the i9300 variant. dont go trying to flash that. you'll be all set with CM10, AOKP, or any other roms in the original android dev section. cheers
Absolute stock 100% AOSP will be missing quite a few features. Like you, I tried to find the same for a while and realized how watered down the OS is.
That being said, the only pure AOSP is currently for the international variant and won't work on this device. Your only option is to compile it from source yourself, which can be very difficult if you are not a developer.

Recommend Some Skinned ROMs To Try

This isn't a best ROM thread so please don't close it.
What I am looking for is recommendations of ROMs to try that meet certain criteria.
That's different from best ROM right? I couldn't find a good feature comparison matrix to get this info. I just want a list of ROMs to try out
I want a ROM with the following:
Based On 4.3
Skinned/Themed e.g. Custom wallpaper/homescreen setup, maybe custom icon set etc
Best of breed applications
Another way of describing what I am looking for is that when I look at friends with Samsung Galaxy S4 or LG G2 the feel of android on their phones is very different.
Their homescreens are well setup and the cameras have extra features and the galleries look fancy etc.
Mod Edit
I know I could probably get this by searching out all sorts of widgets and launchers and applications to just put on stock myself but I would like to see if there is a ROM that has already done it.
So far I have only tried PAC-Man ROM and was a bit disappointed with it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46558465&postcount=743
Are there ROMs that get close to what I am looking for?
Try CM10TOUCHWIZ for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus. You can flash it to whichever galaxy nexus by using Zittoro's script. It should be here under general discussion.
Touchwiz is Samsung's skin.
Mod Edit
Keep reading through the first pages of the ROMS listed in the dev section.
If it's there, then ,you will see it.
If not, start looking in the Play store for ways to personalize it.

What is the purpose of custom ROMs?

I would suppose they add extra features, but nowhere in which they are mentioned do features seem to be mentioned as well. Consequently, I'm left very much confused. What sorts of things do custom ROMs add, specifically, and perhaps in more general terms, what are they?
(Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't quite sure where to post.)

The rom I'm on (MOAR) allows me to customize a lot of things that I couldn't change on a stock phone (notification panel, status bar, colors, battery style, etc). Some roms have themes that can be used to customize. Some roms don't allow for a lot of customization, but offer a debloated stock experience (with a lot of samsung/sprint bloat ware removed. Roms offer customized kernels.
My rom allows me to customize to my heart's content, and at the same time is built to make my phone run better.
Hope this helps...

If you browse the XDA threads you will see there are a lot of benefits! One in particular is the hacked HOT SPOT!
I'm sure this looks like I'm asking to be spoonfed (I'm really just having trouble sorting through the overwhelming chaos of this forum), but could someone(s) post a recommendation(s) with a list of features and a link to a thread with install instructions?

All ROMS under original Android development section or android development section have full instructions to install. You must read carefully, instructions vary from ROM to ROM. There is a big difference between AOSP and TW based ROMs. If your not ready for the issues that may arise from running AOSP, I suggest modified TW ROMs. Most TW based ROMs are in Android development section. Any ROM that says 4.4 or above in either section is AOSP, because there is no official KitKat Samsung ROM yet.

And the OP (original or first post) should show almost all the mods...
