[Q] Root and Non-root dual boot? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I got to thinking the other day after I got the "Firmware Update" notification for the umpteenth time that it would be really cool if there were a way that I could run the factory non-rooted ROM so that I could check my work email easily and then use some sort of app or sequence to switch in to a rooted ROM to do everything else. Is that possible?

No dual boot for us yet...

By firmware update are you talking about an ota update? If so, there are several zips you could flash to get rid of it.

Dual booting a zImage is tricky. Not to say its impossible but it isn't easy like a standard bootimg dual boot. The main problem lies in the recovery being packed with the kernel. When dual booting android if u run into an issue such as a bootloop you flash a zip to boot back to your main rom, the zips are recovery specific. With Tue recovery changing between zImage flashes you could quite easily end up in limbo til you get to a PC with Odin/heimdall to flash a new firmware and be able to boot back up. There's been some work done on it but you can't boot across versions only same build/version and its not really stable in the secondary rom due to kernel conflicts

let me get to the root of the problem. no pun intended.
why do you need to be unrooted to check work email? do you use an app like 'Good for Enterprise' that checks for root or something?

I have to use Touchdown for email and if it detects root (Superuser) it kicks you off the network-which I can't have.

Vzw nexus wiped system

Hey i accident did a system wipe instead of doing a regular wipe and i can only boot into fastboot mode now when i try to boot normally it only stays on GOOGLE screen with the little unlock symbol but like i said i can get into fastboot mode. I tried using the Gnex toolkit 7.4 but it wont downlaod any roms because it says it cannot connect to Goo.im anyone know how i can get a rom on this thing? THank you in advanced.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Well...coincidentally goo.im is down.
But use post 3 of my guide (or your ******* toolkit if you insist) to push a rom.zip to your phone and install it.
Wiping system just wipes the rom.
So if you have a download for the same rom you were on...you can simply flash it and not wipe anything.

Cleaning up Custom Kernel flashes

Okay lets say im on stock everythings 100% stock and i want to flash a custom recovery kernel that has init.d support, custom boot ani support, and add blocking ect..... ok so i flash it lets say........then i lets say i revert back to my stock recovery and kernel......okay now here is the question.......is there anyway i can clean up what the custom kernel installs? Is there a need to clean up? I want to add my own tweaks so i dont want anything bumping code or have multiple code in my phone i want it nice and clean.
Thank you
Your question is confusing but bottom line if you want to start fresh do a clean installation.
Why anybody here would want a stock setup is beyond my comprehension.
Exactly my point i want it fresh and ill do my own thing but i need these custom recovery kernels to gain root or when i need to flash a zip in cwm so after im done kernel riding somebody else is work please take all the belonings with you brought with you when i flash you out. Its in view of my comprehension that these builds dont have a fresh way to gain root access for example like using one click root or an apk to root. they made them in the past before for us sgs2 users.

Use a pre-rooted Odin one click and you get root w/o recovery. There are rooted 1clicks all the way thru fi27. If u use a no-data version all your apps and settings will remain after flash.

Ok now I understand a little more what you want. I think you should spend more time reading and browsing the development sections for more info. I think Agat63 has been packaging stock kernels lately for those who prefer this.
lol yea.. theres plenty of ways. ifor one use mobile odin whenever i need to fllash a kernel.. you can switch between all the kernels you want and maintain root

[Q] Removed root, yet busybox remains... Please help

I'm trying to set my phone back to stock for an ATT warranty exchange. I had previously rooted with Casual. I used a unrooting app, then used a couple apps to verify I didn't have root. Most apps didn't find root, but one found busybox. I looked for it, and low and behold it's there in system/bin, and protected of course, so I can't delete it. How do I delete it? TIA!
Busybox app on the playstore allows u to install and unistall...

Thanks, I had tried that, but because I'm partly unrooted, I can't even get past the busybox alert screen telling me I'm (obviously) not properly rooted.
Here's the screenshot:

How do I do that? I am decent with technology, but have to have clear directions.
Thanks so much! You are all awesome.
Check to see what your phone says about the flash counter, in download mode. Also check if it says it's modified . I have done a warranty exchange a few times with no problems. I always went on download mode, I don't think they are going to use that specific app at the warranty place. After going threw the warranty so many times for black blobs. I'm almost curious if they just check to see if it boots stock with no issues. And gets thrown in a bin that says '' fixed''. Because I've gotten the same phone twice lol.
Anyway, Goodluck, and don't worry about it so much. It will be fine
Thanks for the help! I got it sent back and it was showing not modified when I got it back to stock.

[Q] need help with gs3

Hello, i just purchased a new galaxy s3 virgin mobile edition..
I had like 6 updates when i turned it on and now i am on 4.4.2 kitkat which it's called kot in the system file..
Anyways i have been searching and searching for an easy oneclick root program..
I haven't been able to find anything that works at all...
So i am here to ask everyone on here..
Is there an easy sure fire way to root the galaxy s3 vm version?
That doesn't involve changing the rom or flashing something that might break something or brick my phone...
What happened to samsung? They used to be so easy to root and unlock it was like melting butter...
Thanks in advance
TowelRoot... Philz recovery has a one click root. Plenty of options. NDC is what your firmware is called BTW.

What I just told you to do (Philz Recovery, use the one that ends in ".tar.md5" in Odin- turn off auto reboot in Odin, it helps) then hit Reroot in Philz Settings after you get into Recovery, go into the Play Store and download SuperSU and go into the app and update binaries. This method is tried and true for your device.
My ROM: WICKED X
Do you have a link to the Philz root page?
I'll try it if I feel like it's not gonna brick my phone. Never had to root through Odin..
Thanks

All major initial root methods always ask you to flash a custom recovery through Odin always.
What he explained is correct you are just going to flash Phil's custom recovery then boot it into recovery click re-root and once booted install SU and update binaries.

Android OS using lots of data

Noticed my Android OS is using almost 1gb of which doesn't seem right.
https://m.imgur.com/p1bAilv,XvmBuaw
Any ideas?
Edit 3: Updating will fix this properly.
Edit 2: That didn't fix it...
Edit: I've seemed to "fix" it. From my reading it is a background service trying to do a seamless update in the background. I disabled "com.qti.service.colorservice" using titanium backup and restore and it seems my background data usage has stopped. No negative consequences so far but it may prevent seamless updates. Another fix would probably be updating to the latest patch version...
Idk but I hope you get an answer... Been killing my battery.

That would make sense if he was on stock but if he's using Titanium Backup his phone is rooted and might have other modifications. Flashing the latest factory image or if he's on a custom ROM doing a clean flash of the ROM would probably be the best idea under the circumstances.

It has been a while but I'll reply so anyone else who comes will know. My state before and after was the same. All that changed was my OS version. Flashed the flash-all.sh after removing the -w, flashed the April bootloader (so no boot signing stuff, not the safest or recommended thing), booted TWRP, flashed twrp, flashed supersu, and then rebooted. No other mods besides adaway.
Are you on stock, rooted or unlocked bootloader? I had the same issue on stock (unlocked bootloader) where it was trying download an update repeatedly. I had to actually flash a custom rom to make it stop. Verizon did credit me back for the data it used.
Feel free to read my forum post there and try those steps. - https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/1500910#1500910
