[LOCKED] The reason why I keep my phone STOCK is: - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello fellow XDA Member!
This thread will serve as a reminder of why we decided to keep our phone stock. Tell us your reason!
So, I made a promise to myself. I will keep my bootloader locked, phone unrooted, and stay away from any real customization. I have tried many ROMs, kernels, etc and I have yet to find a better configuration than stock.
Feels free to comment if you believe aftermarket firmware is better than what Google tested and approved to be used on our device.

Lol, no.

Are you trying to create a thread where people just argue?

Its much easier to troll with a stock phone? This is like going on a car website to ask who likes riding bicycles.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2

Stock ROMs do not feel as sluggish because they are odexed.
Custom kernels make your device act up sooner or later. That's the reason why those threads have MILLIONS of views and thousands of comments. Troubleshooting never ends. Besides, if these kernels were really making an improvement on user experience, Google would hire these people, right?
Custom ROMs, is that extra navigation button or battery percentage worth all the time you will spend flashing new versions, reading XDA, helping other members troubleshoot? I have always noticed that person A creates a ROM, person B is the #1 fanboy which spends all day in the thread answering all kinds of questions and dismisses any reports of problems with his Master's creation. Person A barely communicates with person B.
I could list more...

Its like buying a Ferrari and never going over 30.
Sure it looks nice and drives nice, but there's so much more potential.
I feel bad for your phone, trapped in a cage never to realise its full potential.
RIP soldiers gnex.

thank you OP for ignorantly venting your personal issues with custom roms on xda. No, custom roms likely are not for you since you are looking for stability and out of the box usage. Custom roms are for those who are looking to learn and develop and push the boundaries of our devices. As with any rom here YMMV.

This will undoubtedly go nowhere. The reason why we are here is to improve our phones and our experience with our device. So you will get a lot of members that will not take kindly to this, so I am going to close it before it gets to that point. Thank you for understanding. :highfive:

[Q] MIUI....anyone run this through a microscope?

I started hearing about the ROM over on some Dell Streak blogs and had a thought I was worried about...but wonder if I am just being paranoid.
Where is MIUI from? Is this in some actual consumer phone that is on a major network? Has anyone actually met these people that wrote this?
I see on their website that they are working with some of the devs here and supposedly have submitted the FM app to Cyanogen:
http://www.miui.com/thread-1687-1-1.html (Not much more than that page unless you can read Chinese which I cannot.)
I guess my paranoia sets in when I see things come out like this fully baked and being adopted blindly by the masses. We saw games just last year that were doing random calls and that was from a site people trusted.
Sorry if this seems tinfoil hatty, but really what better way to sink a trojan/backdoor into a ton of phones than to release a super cool looking bit of software that no-one is really going to dig through and vette? So my question is do people here really trust this software? Have the Dev's torn it apart enough to feel they know everything in it?
It's an AOSP-based ROM developed by some Chinese folks to make their phones into KIRF iPhones.
I at one point thought the same thing about it. I thought about where it came from, and all the jazz with the same paranoid mindset. Then I thought about it more, and realized I wouldn't be doing anything on my phone that would be of any interest to anyone. I'm sure its probably legit. There are other poeple that have had to go through and port it to English and more fun stuff. I would assume they have taken a decent look at it.
Just like that live wallpaper with the malware in it, I'm sure someone will find a rouge code. Im sure it will be viral too as apple fanboys would jump all over it discrediting Android. But to be on the safe side, I'd only use ROMs from here and other trusted dev forums, from devs with a good rep. At least you'll know its honest work.
Yes, you're being a bit "tinfoil hatty." Google MIUI dev and you'll see the english forum from xda members that are dedicated to this rom's development. I'm sure that they have broken down most of the rom and you can get more information there.

I how you' re trying (unsuccessfully) to be funny. Here's a newsflash, there are android geeks, honest ones even, all over the world!!
Really, if the Chinese were trying to gather information via some device that millions upon millions of Americans would use (and no, that would not be the MIUI on Android), they would probably tap the ipod, iphone, and ipad - all of which are made in China.

best/most reliable/most updated kernel

So I've noticed there are a ton of kernels out there for the GN, and I know you can't exactly say which is best...but I'm looking for the one that has the most support or is the most stable right now. I just got mine a couple days ago, so I'm looking to root and ROM it (no stranger to android or rooting/ROMing) and I figured those in the community would be able to tell me which ones are basically dead and which ones are not.
Thanks in advance!
There is no best they are all reliable and all updated. Pick one or stay stock.

Haha well that's a first. Most of my previous devices had only 1 or 2 main kernels that were constantly kept up to date, and the others were just attempts to make one, or ones that went defunct.

mods can we start issuing bans for these threads?
Trinity and Franco have a lot of users and their threads are very active - should be able to sort out any issues you might have. Also both kernel devs are pretty active in the threads as well. And both have choices of extremely stable builds as well as experimental ones for the more adventurous. Try out each for a week or so and you'll get a good idea. There are others too, obviously, like Lean and Air Kernel etc but I've spent the most time with the afore mentioned so I can't speak for the others. I'm currently on Trinity 1536/384-stable35 and I can honestly say its been going wonderfully well.

id rather have mods ban posts like yours. stop reading these threads and responding in them. you are just making it worse for everyone, not the tread starters. this IS why we have a general section and Q&A. xda search is not reliable enough anyways. imagine how many posts could have been saved by you not responding/not responding in this way. if your going to respond, at least be helpful to the op.
@jdcnosse my preference is for trinity, but both trinity and franco kernel are good, and they are both constantly getting updated. but i suggest you try as many as you can so that you can find one that your device likes the best.

Really? This isn't posted anywhere near dev section. Let people give their advice on kernels and ROMs. No big deal. People trolling is what I dislike. I've reported you to the moderators for being disrespectful.
Let's keeps these posts non argumentive and let's keep them informative. I see no issue with them.

+1 on experimentation. If I were to give MY choice. It would be Trinity. I have stuck with it since I got my phone. I've tried a few, but I enjoy Trinity the best. Franco, as stated before, is another good choice. I've used both their kernels on my Nexus S with good results

Installing N7100 4.2 ROM on SGH T889 T-Mobile Note 2?

Just wondering if it's possible to install the International N7100 version of the CyanogenMod 10.1 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ROM onto our T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-T889)?
If not, is there any way to port it, it shouldn't be that hard from the looks of it since they are almost identical hardware except for the LTE chip in our phone (some ROM's like the original ParanoidAndroid ROM even left support for it out, an LTE-supporting ROM being out seperate)
Really prefer the new camera and lock screen in 4.2 (running it on my GSIII right now)
What about the n7105 roms?

I find it hilarious that this community has nothing to say about this thread. Yet almost 400 views and I am the only one who responded to the OP's question.
Yes there may be a MILLION threads just like this but come on folks I thought this was suppose to be a helping community....
All this thread needs is the community to respond for an example.....
XXXN7105XXX Rom works with our phones....
So hard right?
Yet so many people here think if they respond to something that they deserve a thanks???
So annoying the amount of you who have "If I helped hit the thanks button!?!?!?" lame so lame.

The reason no one replied is:
1) a quick search would show we have CM10.1 (android 4.2) already.
2) a quick search would answer the question showing porting has been tried, and work except for audio, blue tooth, kernel, radio (basically made your phone useless)
Basically the thread was useless and from almost a month ago.
Your attitude towards others leaves a lot to be desired, and I am hoping this is not your normal attitude as we have enough self-centered people who desire to have their every question answered on a silver platter, though most don't think it very hard to hit thanks when the answer helped.
This community is first and foremost designed for developers and people who have the mindset of helping themselves and others, not for those unwilling or unable to spend 5 minutes looking for the answers to their questions.

Seriously thinking of giving the phone back

As I'm within the 28 days to exchange.....I've kind of had it with fancy phones and might go for a cheapy and get most of the money back, they wont like it but hey ho
Cool story bro
EDIT: But seriously, WHY do you hate the phone? I have a One X, I hate the way its designed and the battery life. I don't like the phone but atleast I know WHY I don't like the phone.
Maybe the reasons you don't like it can be fixed with a better ROM or something?

I would - I moved mine on to my wife who isn't fussed about custom/boot images/s-off/super-cid/flashing radios etc
I'm back using my Sensation and that's fancy enough for me for now. For me its better to have my modding freedom back.
And yeah - there is something to be said for saving thr £500 a high end phone costs. The functionality of a Desire C say is really the same at a lot less.
Agree wish I still had my Desire instead of all the risky business that is installing roms.

Stu, no offence but just ignore trolls.
By saying "I wonder how many other "useful" (ONE L!) posts there are"
This is just going to make people not want to help you. Considering XDA is one of the most useful, if not THE most useful forum for not only Android but devices such as the Raspberry Pi.
If you don't find this forum useful, why come here and tell all us useless users that you "Thinking of giving it back". Why do we need to know that?

Ignore trolls? The forum is messy enough but he decided to start a new thread to tell everyone that the phone is **** and he's giving it back. What is the purpose of the thread? I know i should of just ignored it but its [email protected]!king irritating. Wants locking.
no one wants to know that you want to give the phone back tell it someone in your family or so...but that's really the MOST useless thread here on xda...REALLY ...why the f*ck do you open such a thread, but nobody wants to know that? ....like cjm1979 said...NO purpose in open this thread...

[Q] Which ROM(s) have the best battery performance

In your experience, which ROMs have given you the best performance. I was using Jellytime R29 and I could go almost 12 hours with normal usage before having to tether it to a charger. Now I have RC4 installed and it barely makes it past lunchtime. I'd go back to R29 but i'd like to have a speakerphone.
What are some of your personal experiences with battery life on the Inspire 4g? Also, I purchased a brand new battery for this unit so that's sort of out of the question.
Also somewhat related, is there a way we can run benchmarks so that we can post our results of battery life on a normal day. Like is there an app that sort of oversees the battery and prints out a nice report.
Better battery stats.
I have a ROM with great battery life. It's called the 'see all the ROMs for yourself' ROM. Seriously, read the damned rules. lt's forbidden and frowned up to post threads like this
Push that thanks button if I helped!

Really, a post like this is frowned upon? That's odd, i'm asking a question to other folks of their experience. I'm doing my own study now but it would be nice to hear from others and their experiences. Thanks for making me feel like i've done something wrong, but I don't feel like it.. I know how to use the search, I use it quite frequently here. Love this site btw, but I would appreciate it if you'd post something relevant to the question I posed instead of be a forum nazi.

Half your question - how to monitor battery - is a reasonable question. However, the other half, which is what us "forum Nazis" refer to as "best ROM threads," tend to:
1. Be highly subjective. Each person's need/want and each phone (yes, even though the models are the same) is different.
2. Because such questions are so subjective, these threads (which do pop up a lot) tend to simply devolve into flaming and unconfirmed opinions. That is why mods usually frown upon and close such threads - to head off the mess.
