So I've noticed there are a ton of kernels out there for the GN, and I know you can't exactly say which is best...but I'm looking for the one that has the most support or is the most stable right now. I just got mine a couple days ago, so I'm looking to root and ROM it (no stranger to android or rooting/ROMing) and I figured those in the community would be able to tell me which ones are basically dead and which ones are not.
Thanks in advance!

Haha well that's a first. Most of my previous devices had only 1 or 2 main kernels that were constantly kept up to date, and the others were just attempts to make one, or ones that went defunct.

mods can we start issuing bans for these threads?
Trinity and Franco have a lot of users and their threads are very active - should be able to sort out any issues you might have. Also both kernel devs are pretty active in the threads as well. And both have choices of extremely stable builds as well as experimental ones for the more adventurous. Try out each for a week or so and you'll get a good idea. There are others too, obviously, like Lean and Air Kernel etc but I've spent the most time with the afore mentioned so I can't speak for the others. I'm currently on Trinity 1536/384-stable35 and I can honestly say its been going wonderfully well.

id rather have mods ban posts like yours. stop reading these threads and responding in them. you are just making it worse for everyone, not the tread starters. this IS why we have a general section and Q&A. xda search is not reliable enough anyways. imagine how many posts could have been saved by you not responding/not responding in this way. if your going to respond, at least be helpful to the op.
@jdcnosse my preference is for trinity, but both trinity and franco kernel are good, and they are both constantly getting updated. but i suggest you try as many as you can so that you can find one that your device likes the best.

Really? This isn't posted anywhere near dev section. Let people give their advice on kernels and ROMs. No big deal. People trolling is what I dislike. I've reported you to the moderators for being disrespectful.
Let's keeps these posts non argumentive and let's keep them informative. I see no issue with them.

+1 on experimentation. If I were to give MY choice. It would be Trinity. I have stuck with it since I got my phone. I've tried a few, but I enjoy Trinity the best. Franco, as stated before, is another good choice. I've used both their kernels on my Nexus S with good results

Been getting horrible battery on my Sprint GNex. Currently running Paranoid Android with that kernel and still getting **** battery life. What's the best combination that is working for you all? I'm getting around 7~9 now. I used to get a whole day out of my OG Evo.
Sigh another battery thread.

ROM? No idea. Kernel? Trinity
Not every ROM and Kernel combo is the best for everyone. YOU have to see which work best for YOU and YOUR usage. All these are really "hey let's all post what we're using because it's our favorite and if we're using it it MUST be the best"

CM9 SKANK/TRINITY alpha 85~4.7~1344-307=4 hrs or more screen on time and about stands still on standby. I do not allow anything to run in background (manually update when needed) and I only have apps I use on my phone. I have ran this setup for wks. Just updated to today's build.. With this kernel I've had no reboots but if u do try Trinity and have a reboot bump voltage up a hair till it quits. It will. And never have I gotten the screen time I do w Trinity w/ any other kernel. Been through the list. Also this rom, its the most dependable there is in my opinion. Scrolls like no other!! Lots of new options like status bar on bottom..much more!! Still flawless!

No it isn't "another battery thread" I wanted to see what people were getting. I don't run 3G or wifi really at all unless I'm using them. I know how to use my battery. I also know it matters for each phone. The stuff I have tried isn't giving me the results I think are possible with my phone. Obviously the stuff I am trying hasn't worked. There isn't much more info NEEDED. I asked basically what people were getting and on what combinations. Someone else's combination might do wonders for me. I'll try trinity since many people are suggesting it. I'll run it over PA for now, and see what I'm getting.

I have the gsm gnex and i'm using AOKP build 39 with franco kernel nightly 192 and i constantly get around 3 1/2 to 4 hour screen on time. In my opinion the best combo. Experimenting with different kernels is however fun.

Best rom. You find this phrase in every thread. I just don't like these types of comments. They are simply lies. The best rom is the one you like and you don't need to say loud.
Just say Thanks to the devs.
At least with the gnex people have lots of ROMs to argue uselessly about. Many phones only have the ROM they came with, and don't even get CWM to back it up with. One of the many reasons I'm glad to own a gnex.
Sooooooooooo.....whats your favorite Rom?

People should stop posting wrong section and report directly to a mod.
Once the moderator does find out he/she then has to move the thread, and if there are "wrong section, stupid head" posts he/she has to delete them.
Less work makes for a happy mod.

Wow you failed to read the forum rules and have the nerve to tell people there wasting time... obviously you didn't graduate from school because if you knew how to read.. 1. You would have posted in the right section and 2. You would have knew how to use the search function because your question probably already has a post and answer.
I dont understand how hard that is to do. :silly:
If I learned one thing on XDA, it's this. Most people like to post in the wrong sections, because they know that they will get a faster answer and that more people will see it. They do it, despite the fact that they shouldn't. So, in theory, we should just ignore those that do it, because lets be honest...they know better and so should we. Now, I've also seen many members that know better, reply to these people and give them their answers, but they fail to see that, they are only feeding these people, to keep on doing it.

This thread will serve as a reminder of why we decided to keep our phone stock. Tell us your reason!
So, I made a promise to myself. I will keep my bootloader locked, phone unrooted, and stay away from any real customization. I have tried many ROMs, kernels, etc and I have yet to find a better configuration than stock.
Feels free to comment if you believe aftermarket firmware is better than what Google tested and approved to be used on our device.

Lol, no.
Are you trying to create a thread where people just argue?
Its much easier to troll with a stock phone? This is like going on a car website to ask who likes riding bicycles.

Stock ROMs do not feel as sluggish because they are odexed.
Custom kernels make your device act up sooner or later. That's the reason why those threads have MILLIONS of views and thousands of comments. Troubleshooting never ends. Besides, if these kernels were really making an improvement on user experience, Google would hire these people, right?
Custom ROMs, is that extra navigation button or battery percentage worth all the time you will spend flashing new versions, reading XDA, helping other members troubleshoot? I have always noticed that person A creates a ROM, person B is the #1 fanboy which spends all day in the thread answering all kinds of questions and dismisses any reports of problems with his Master's creation. Person A barely communicates with person B.
I could list more...

thank you OP for ignorantly venting your personal issues with custom roms on xda. No, custom roms likely are not for you since you are looking for stability and out of the box usage. Custom roms are for those who are looking to learn and develop and push the boundaries of our devices. As with any rom here YMMV.
This will undoubtedly go nowhere. The reason why we are here is to improve our phones and our experience with our device. So you will get a lot of members that will not take kindly to this, so I am going to close it before it gets to that point. Thank you for understanding. :highfive:
In your experience, which ROMs have given you the best performance. I was using Jellytime R29 and I could go almost 12 hours with normal usage before having to tether it to a charger. Now I have RC4 installed and it barely makes it past lunchtime. I'd go back to R29 but i'd like to have a speakerphone.
What are some of your personal experiences with battery life on the Inspire 4g? Also, I purchased a brand new battery for this unit so that's sort of out of the question.
Also somewhat related, is there a way we can run benchmarks so that we can post our results of battery life on a normal day. Like is there an app that sort of oversees the battery and prints out a nice report.
Better battery stats.
I have a ROM with great battery life. It's called the 'see all the ROMs for yourself' ROM. Seriously, read the damned rules. lt's forbidden and frowned up to post threads like this

Half your question - how to monitor battery - is a reasonable question. However, the other half, which is what us "forum Nazis" refer to as "best ROM threads," tend to:
1. Be highly subjective. Each person's need/want and each phone (yes, even though the models are the same) is different.
2. Because such questions are so subjective, these threads (which do pop up a lot) tend to simply devolve into flaming and unconfirmed opinions. That is why mods usually frown upon and close such threads - to head off the mess.
