[Q] Is it beneficial to root SIM free android phone? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I now happily own the Samsung Galaxy Note II, the SIM free international version. This phone was never locked or branded.
In the past, when rooting was discussed, it always had to do with removing the branding annoyances from those US carrier phones.
Are there any significant benefits of rooting the Note II (GT-N7100)? If yes - what are they?
Thanks

Congrats on your Note 2! There are quite a few reasons you can / should root and / or install a custom ROM & kernel:
1. Rooting gives you complete control over your phone. Be it for customizations or for running tweaks and mods.
2. Custom ROM's add additional features to your OS.
3. De-Bloated: branded or not, the phone comes from Samsung with all kinds of bloat-ware installed. Custom roms usually come minus that software.
4. Performance! Most custom roms come tweaked with Performance enhancements so your phone runs alot smoother and faster. (overclocking etc)
5. BATTERY LIFE! Custom roms & kernels allow you to get the most out of your battery. Via Underclocking / undervolting, different CPU governors & IO Schedulers.
I am personally running WanamLite ROM V1.4 & RedPill Rev 0.5 Kernel. With Pegasusq / Deadline IO Scheduler. (Awesome performance & battery life)!
Hope this helps! If you need any more help or suggestions PM me.

Benefit from custom roms like Omega and ARHD

No offence to any of the developers, i respect your work !
Im just asking, what are benefits of installing Omega or ARHD ?
I want to keep stock-like rom (because of full functionality of spen etc..). And ive been considering option to flash stock-like custom rom (Omega, Wanamilite, ARHD). So i wanted to ask you what are real benefits with flashing those roms ?
And can you tell me the difference between ARHD and OMEGA (i see some difference from op threads but i cant seem to find big difference )..
Thanks in advance

I am personally using WanamLite V1.5 with RedPill Rev 0.6. The benefits are that i was also looking for a stock based rom to keep all the phones original feature like Spen etc. The WanamLite rom, its stock based and adds better performance to the device. Also the RedPill Kernel further boosts performance while also boosting battery life. My $0.02 cents.
Are u experiencing keyboard lag on custom roms ? Its killing me on stock rom ...

To be honest with you, your best bet to get any information is to do what everybody else does. Pull up the post on each ROM where it tells you the features each ROM has then you can compare all 3 rom features and make an informed decision on which 1 you want to install. No 1 is going to do that for you.

And i will add...read the threads of each rom. That way you can get a feeling for each rom.Level of support, problems and how friendly it is.
Then as therockk says...make your choice.
I remember back when single core phones running 1000Mhz were considered fast. People were really happy. That was about 2 years ago.
Now, we have quad-core phones running 1.6GHz each core, and people still want better performance?!!?
I haven't seem much of a difference between stock and custom ROMs for the latest few phones (GNote2, S3). Look at the good things about these phones instead of the minor little performance "issues."

Stock rom and stock kernel are pretty good, especially the kernel. But i have a rooted device....i want to test the extremes...custom roms and and custom kernels give that opportunity.
Just my take but Androids not about just accepting...it`s about reaching out.
Thank you for all your replies... I decided to stay stock .. Because it fits me best. I have everything i need and performance is good.. Battery life is great..
I rooted my phone and did custom cwm just to mod it a bit... Thats all..
Thanks again folx

[Q] benefits to rooting your phone?

I Have a rooted Samsung galaxy S2 t989. My friend also has the same phone but it isn't rooted. I tell him all the time to root his phone but then he asks me "name me 3 Amazing things that I can do with a rooted that I cant do with a non rooted phone?" I can never tell him good enough things and he will never root his phone. So I was wondering if you guys could post all the amazing things that you can do with a rooted phone? That would be greatly appreciated!
Battery life increase
Performance increase
Full control of YOUR phone (no bloat)
Power over your device is the greatest benefit. You can delete all the T-Mobile crap that came with the phone. Root alone won't increase battery life or performance, but give you access to ROM's and kernels that will. And of coarse with root you have a custom recovery, enabling you to flash any thing awesome that comes along

As others have said better performance
Removal Of Bloatware (all tmobiles extra and monitoring apps)
User Customization(depending on the Rom)
Extended Battery Life
Access to more Applications(root only apps)
Removing bloat is definitely at the top of the list. Even if you stay with the stock ROM, that alone makes rooting worth the time and effort.

First nexus device - questions?

I've had an android phone since my tmobile g2 ( the one with the flip out keyboard, sweet phone!) and have always rooted and installed custom roms but this is my first nexus device. What are the benefits of a custom rom here? I'm not asking whether I should root it but just wondering what major improvements a custom rom brings to an already debloated rom.
Just go to any ROM development thread to see all the additional features it has.
Yeah, I know that. I'm not new to android or custom roms, to be more specific do the custom roms for Nexus offer significant performance or battery increases? With htc or Samsung the touchwiz and sense overlays use memory and cpu and there is an obvious increase in speed when flashing an aosp or aokp rom. Just wondered if it's the same or if there's less noticeable difference.
Well I've heard about performance increases with custom ROM's and increased battery life.

A custom kernel will have more impact on performance and battery life with it allowing you to overclock, underclock, undervolt your CPU and GPU.

[Q] Questions from possible future Note2 owner

Hey folks!
Been a long user of Xperia Arc S (2011, official updates never got past crappy 4.0.4), now it is time to upgrade. I was looking at something in medium price range, Note 2 caught my eye. The Development section appears to have great activity as well, so guess this phone does sure have some after-market worthness. Still I thought to ask you, how happy are you with your devices.
First, if I am actually going to buy this phone, is there any difference between the colors? Do the materials differ? Is the grey one also more fingerprint and dirt prone than the white one?
How powerful are the CPU and GPU on the phone? Can these take some stress or are they under continuous pressure by the firmware? By that I mean, how well is the firmware optimized? How many user apps can the phone run in addition to system apps before I should start rooting and throwing out some unnecessary crap? Or should I directly move to a custom ROM (might want to explain regarding the counters and official firmware issues)?
Looking in the General section, I see the Android 4.3 update has brought many negative emotions to the forum due to missing features and worse user experience. As I checked from my operator, the phone is sold with 4.1.2 on it. Is it worth to upgrade to 4.3 (I wonder if the update has any major positive sides as well)?
I have played around a lot with ROMs and kernels and basebands and stuff on Xperia models, but I am completely new to the Samsung world of smartphones, thereby any kind of feedback (I won't mind critism either ) is certainly welcome.
That's it for now, I will shoot more questions once I get some!
Hi and welcome,
I love my Note II and had it since Feb 13. It is still fast and does everything. I even love the 4.3 update ,though I'm not on stock, bu on Criskelo ROM, it is much more fluid than 4.1.2 and I consider 4.3 a great update. If you look at the forums you will find a lot of poeple have problems with 4.3, but IMHO, much more don't have any problems. There is a topic on "report bugs" for 4.3 and voting and more people say it's stable than that they have problems. From my experience, since Criskelo is almost stock with Note 3 pack and couple of tweaks that you really should have on any rom (and can install manualy) - the battery is the same as on 4.1.2 and the ROM feels more fluid. I don't see why STOCK one wouldn't feel faster too.
There is some bloat, but that is easily removed, by freezing in Titanium backup, but most of the apps Samsung packs in TW ROMs are useful, IMHO. All sw for S-Pen, multiwindow, Find my phone service (really useful!!), etc. If you have Samsung TV - even more useful software So I froze just a couple of apps that I really don't need.
So I'd suggest you flash EITHER pre-rooted de-KNOXed stock, or some custom ROM. I read that DM and Phoenix are great too, but I am so much satisfied with Criskelo that I have doubts I'll be moving anywhere (well, maybe just for a test spin, but after a BACKUP)
So - 1) root, 2) flash custom recovery 3) backup whole ROM to SD card 4) erase+factory reset, 5) flash MJ5 bootloader (KNOX free), and then pick a ROM to flash. They mostly have AROMA installer so are flashed from recovery (custom ROMs, that is). I dunno about stock.
Just stay away from official 4.3 because it has KNOX which can void your warranty or prevent you from changing bootloader etc. Just use MJ5 bootloader, it is a bootloader for 4.3 which doesn't have KNOX.
Also, custom have 1 big adavtage for me - Note 3 software (It is stable!!).
Cheers,
D.
All right, thanks for the answer. Any more feedback?
Also, any recommendations regarding the color of the phone?
Awsome Note II
Note II seems to be one of the most interesting and customizable devices on the market now and thanks to the devs of custom roms you will be surprised how powerful and changeable this phablet is. Even after more than a year it can compete with many new devices.
Touchwiz and its S-Pen-features are unique :good:
Just take a short glimpse around on other devices here on XDA and you will see that there are only a handfull which have similar amount of custom roms and mods.

Kernel Recommendations?

I just got myself an M8 which I unlocked and started using 4 days ago. I am used to using the Galaxy S phones and Ktoonsez Kernel for my devices. I am completely new with this device and currently running the LeeDroid ROM and I am wondering if anyone has any kernels they recommend for this device. I am looking for the best balance of Performance, Battery and ease of customization.
Thanks!
I find kernels don't make much of a difference, for my usage... So I usually use whatever comes with the rom.
But I do know two of your reasons contradict each other. Performance and battery life. Usually you slightly sacrifice one for the other.
Edit: Stock kernels, and ones included with roms are already designed for a good balance. Older devices needed more tweaking to gain different outcomes, but newer devices aren't nearly as impacted by kernel tweaks. My opinion of course.
