Hi guys m facing a strange issue. I have observed that sometimes my proximity sensor remains on. I tried to find out the app causing it by Force Stopping each app one by one but that doesn't solve the problem. .
I am not using any motion like quick glance which uses the sensor or any other app like turning the screen on off (eg smart cover etc)
only a reboot fixes this issue but after sometime (say few hours or 1-2 days) the sensor turns on. . Can you suggest me what else shall I do? coz m observing more than normal battery drain in stand by mode. . Please help!

Try turning off "quick glance" under settings--> motion.

I too have noticed it and posted it on a thread also
I also notice this..only now i came to know that it is proximity sensor..will appear as a dim red right and if it stays on, it turns off only if restarted..might be a bug..should we report it to samsung so that they will fix it in updates?
I have noticed one thing that after 2+ or more (random) days of usage if I receive/make a call the sensor doesn't turn off. .might be this is a s/w bug. .but this is what I have noticed after closely monitoring my phone. .

I've noticed this too! Didn't know the dim red light was proximity sensor. But i've noticed it only twice (with battery below 40% on both occasions).
Viber has a known bug that cause the proximity sensor to be always on. If you uses it, u need to update to the latest version i think its v2.2.3.109.

Still, I would love to see what's the cause of this and how to resolve it.

Even though I first got this proximity sensor bug after I turned on "increase volume in pocket" (only 1 time so far), I'm pretty sure it's not related, because I did a few tests and as far as I could tell the phone increases the volume based on its position (and possibly movement) in the second it receives the call. If it's vertical (like in a pocket), or on its side (like in a bag), when you get a call, it will increase the volume. If the phone is horizontal, like on a table, and starts ringing, the volume doesn't increase, and it won't increase even if you pick it up and move it around while it's ringing.
I also thought initially that it uses data from the proximity sensor, but I tested and it doesn't care if it's covered or not when the phone rings, it appears to use data from the accelerometer/gyro exclusively.
I'm try turn all motion off right now. Let see if it can solve the problem
I have the same problem.
I resolve it by pressing volume up + home + power.
Let it restart and so far after about 1mth+ did not encounter this issue any more.
Hope this help :fingers-crossed:
i have the same problem
all motions are off
and still have it random....only restart to close the sensor

hello, at times my proximity sensor glows red and it never goes down. when this happens i felt the screen heating up and battery draining to 0 pretty fast, any suggestions or solution to it?
Best regards,

If you downloaded the latest Viber update then that is the problem. Lots of people complaining of it, I had to uninstall Viber for the same reason.
Hope they fix it soon.
Same issue here.

Viber latest update is doing that. Removing it fixed the problem for me.
You can simply "Exit" Viber & the sensor will go back to normal until Viber starts again.

True, it doesn't not go off after viber runs, even after... for me it dd not work even after exiting viber...
Thats strange, I have seen this problem in my HOX, and in an another HOX and a SG3. In all 3, the sensor would immediately stop glowing once I hit Exit in Viber.
Thats right it works for me! Thanx a lot.

Hi guys,
I have issues with my proximity sensor, the problem is that when i block it with my hand and remove it, my phone thinks that my hand is still over it until I move it under a lamp.
I tested this by dialing *#0*# into the dialer, selecting the "Sensor" test, and then placing my hand over the phone and then the screen turns yellow, and the phone vibrates and under the Proximity Sensor, the value under PROXIMITY remains at 1.0. Then when I move the phone under a desk lamp, the phone stops vibrating and the value returns to 0.0 and the background to the color of white.
This is in a room of about 28-31 lux as is displayed under Lights Sensor on the same screen, and the lamp which i use to turn off the vibration and set PROXIMITY to 0, registers ~1050 lux (I'm sure brightness has nothing to do with this issue).
This is causing problems during calls because I can't use the phone, once I place the phone to my face and must wait for the other person to hang up. Or in the most recent case, for T-Mobile voicemail to ask 3-4 times for me to enter in my passcode before it finally hung up on me.
This is a relatively recent problem, I've had this phone since October 29th (3 days after its release) and I suspect it might be an issue with the latest update. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks guys!
This may not be a reply you want to hear! I would say a factory reset is in order. I had the same problem on an S3 and a factory reset fixed it after an update.
Good luck!

If you lower the screen brightness all the way down and open the stock internet to Google, and tap the search bar to pop the keyboard up, you'll see a slight flicker. So far on every display s4 at the store has the same problem. Anyone have an idea if this is software or hardware related?

Same here. Tested and experienced no flickering issue.
Are you talking about the smearing issue when the phone is dim all the way and you have white text on black background. Text turns hazy purple when u scroll. If so this is a known issue that's been reported here already.

I've noticed flickering on super white backgrounds. It's hard to see and it's got to be the right lighting and high brightness. IMO if you need to go through a process to see a slight flicker, blobs, etc., it's not really a concern. I'm assuming it's software related.. Same with the text blur.

Well yeah thats what I mean't by flicker lol. I honestly think the oled screen samsung put in the s4 is a little faulty and they needed to calibrate it better before shipping.

Go in any app with the keyboard popped up and go into the Sun directly hitting the screen and you will see your screen flickering endlessly no matter what app your in

I first noticed it when the screen didn't black out during a call. Then I downloaded an app which checks if there is a proximity sensor and the distance it reports. According to the app, the last distance reported is 5 centimeters and it doesn't change at all when I obstruct the sensor. That makes me pretty sure that it stopped working. What can I do now?

If its anything like mine, you'll start getting some even weirder behavior. When I would answer a phone call (or place one), the proximity sensor wouldn't work and the phone would reboot itself within 5-10 seconds.
I downloaded an app called "Hardware Disabler" which allows you to disable the proximity sensor on the Gnex (its the one labeled 4-0044). It works for me...only annoyance is having to turn my screen off/on during phone calls manually. But, its better than having no phone (i.e. soft reboots).
Anyway, to answer your question, i'm not sure there's much you can do (other than disable). I've read that the proximity sensors on these GNex's are a little buggy.
My Nexus Reboot During Call once in day too !
maybe my reboot problem is Proximity sensor ?
change my simcard and factory reset not solve my problem .
I have had this issue. Do you use a ROM with the active display feature? A lot of ROMs have been including this lately. I feel like my issue started when they added that. It has a "Pocket Mode" option that uses the proximity sensor and I've always felt like it messed up my proximity sensor during calls. I never had reboots but the screen would flicker on and off during a call. Sometimes just staying on. I have turned Active display off all together and sometimes it will work right and sometimes it will flicker. But for me, it seems to have started when ROMs started including that feature.
I'm just gonna go ahead an suggest the obvious, flash another ROM. Even stock if you aren't running it just to get collective results, this way you can eliminate the ROM factor.

It sometimes does it for me too, but it's very very rare. Sometimes the phone just freezes during a call (when swipe to take the call).

Can't speak for others, but I tried everything that could be tried. Flashed different Roms, kernels, and even went back to stock using the images provided by Google. Nothing fixed it until I realized it was a hardware issue. I haven't had a single problem since disabling that sensor.
EDIT: also, to clarify, it wasn't an intermittent problem for me. I could NEVER make/receive calls until I disabled that sensor.

Anyone else experiencing a really long delay when you try to wake your phone up? About 70% of the time when I wake my phone up to just use my phone, it has a bad delay. Most of the time it will take around 7 - 10 seconds for the screen to turn on.
I am stock and un-rooted. I have gone into the stock recovery and cleared the cache partition a couple of times, but that doesn't help. I am really hoping for S-off soon. I'm hoping that a custom rom can fix it.
I'm also experiencing this same problem, drives me insane. I'm hoping that maybe the forthcoming 5.1 update will address that issue.
I've never experienced this. I'm stock still. Kinda sounds like a runway app causing the problem.
Never saw this on launch os or 5.1. Have you tried running it without apps for a while?
Last night I disabled instagram. It seemed to fix the problem so far. I don't use it much anyway. My battery stat still shows it as number 2 on the list. I just uninstalled it. Maybe it will fix some issues.
I have this too...but I'd say only about 30 percent of the time. I use the double tap to wake aout it certainly does not all the time.
Mine does it sometimes. I don't know if it's a delay because I push the power button again and it comes on. Another thing that drives me up the wall is that the screen doesn't wake up after taking the phone away from my ear during a call sometimes. I'll have to push the power button to turn the screen on.

This sounds like either a case problem, or proximity sensor.

I just tried it, it passed the tests a few times. I have a spigen neo hybrid so it doesn't come even close to the sensor. Who knows.

Mine doesn't wake up after a call sometimes. It just started doing the delay thing again. I wonder if it has anything to do with memory leak on 5.0? I may disable a couple games I downloaded this week and see if that fixes it.
