Hi guys,
I have issues with my proximity sensor, the problem is that when i block it with my hand and remove it, my phone thinks that my hand is still over it until I move it under a lamp.
I tested this by dialing *#0*# into the dialer, selecting the "Sensor" test, and then placing my hand over the phone and then the screen turns yellow, and the phone vibrates and under the Proximity Sensor, the value under PROXIMITY remains at 1.0. Then when I move the phone under a desk lamp, the phone stops vibrating and the value returns to 0.0 and the background to the color of white.
This is in a room of about 28-31 lux as is displayed under Lights Sensor on the same screen, and the lamp which i use to turn off the vibration and set PROXIMITY to 0, registers ~1050 lux (I'm sure brightness has nothing to do with this issue).
This is causing problems during calls because I can't use the phone, once I place the phone to my face and must wait for the other person to hang up. Or in the most recent case, for T-Mobile voicemail to ask 3-4 times for me to enter in my passcode before it finally hung up on me.
This is a relatively recent problem, I've had this phone since October 29th (3 days after its release) and I suspect it might be an issue with the latest update. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks guys!
This may not be a reply you want to hear! I would say a factory reset is in order. I had the same problem on an S3 and a factory reset fixed it after an update.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Any reply is better than none . And I'd rather factory reset than try Samsung support, so at least it might be fixable.
Thanks again!
Did it solve your problem?

Whoa. I never even knew you could get the number pad to show up on the lock screen. I have had my lock screen sift before. It happened once about 2 weeks ago. I just reset the phone and it hasn't happened since. Is this something that keeps happening to you?
Unfortunately this happens quite often and requires me to reboot the phone to unlock it.
I had this issue once with the pattern lock as well. Shifted up and right leaving only the lower left exposed and had to reboot.

This has never happened to me on the lock screen personally, but my girl had this happen to her phone randomly one day at work and afterwards she found out her IMEI code on the phone had been blocked, had to send it back in for a replacement.
It's possible if you lose your data connection under certain conditions this may happen. I'm assuming this might also occur if the screen turns on while trying to change it's orientation as this has happened to me in certain programs which required a reboot to fix (this occurred while reading during the 5 second period between the screen shutting off automatically and the screen locking therefore the screen had not yet locked before it was turned back on).
Yes, have had it happen to be as well. Am rooted. Reboot seems to be the only solution.

Hi guys m facing a strange issue. I have observed that sometimes my proximity sensor remains on. I tried to find out the app causing it by Force Stopping each app one by one but that doesn't solve the problem. .
I am not using any motion like quick glance which uses the sensor or any other app like turning the screen on off (eg smart cover etc)
only a reboot fixes this issue but after sometime (say few hours or 1-2 days) the sensor turns on. . Can you suggest me what else shall I do? coz m observing more than normal battery drain in stand by mode. . Please help!

Try turning off "quick glance" under settings--> motion.

I too have noticed it and posted it on a thread also
I also notice this..only now i came to know that it is proximity sensor..will appear as a dim red right and if it stays on, it turns off only if restarted..might be a bug..should we report it to samsung so that they will fix it in updates?
I have noticed one thing that after 2+ or more (random) days of usage if I receive/make a call the sensor doesn't turn off. .might be this is a s/w bug. .but this is what I have noticed after closely monitoring my phone. .
Sent from my GT-N7100
I've noticed this too! Didn't know the dim red light was proximity sensor. But i've noticed it only twice (with battery below 40% on both occasions).
Viber has a known bug that cause the proximity sensor to be always on. If you uses it, u need to update to the latest version i think its v2.2.3.109.

Even though I first got this proximity sensor bug after I turned on "increase volume in pocket" (only 1 time so far), I'm pretty sure it's not related, because I did a few tests and as far as I could tell the phone increases the volume based on its position (and possibly movement) in the second it receives the call. If it's vertical (like in a pocket), or on its side (like in a bag), when you get a call, it will increase the volume. If the phone is horizontal, like on a table, and starts ringing, the volume doesn't increase, and it won't increase even if you pick it up and move it around while it's ringing.
I also thought initially that it uses data from the proximity sensor, but I tested and it doesn't care if it's covered or not when the phone rings, it appears to use data from the accelerometer/gyro exclusively.
I'm try turn all motion off right now. Let see if it can solve the problem
I have the same problem.
I resolve it by pressing volume up + home + power.
Let it restart and so far after about 1mth+ did not encounter this issue any more.
Hope this help :fingers-crossed:
i have the same problem

and still have it random....only restart to close the sensor
Hi all,
I bought 2 units of SGN2 recently and found out that sometimes during from sleep to awake or from lock screen to unlock screen, there is a line of white light flashes across my screen horizontally at the bottom just above the home button. To be sure on the problem, I had tried out 4 more units of SGN2. 2 from my friends and 2 from shops display units and they all having same symptoms. Had sent back to Samsung service center and they had my phone formatted and reloaded software. Also done a full factory reset but still not resolve. Does anyone else seeing this symptoms? Is this a software issue? by the way, my phone is not rooted and still using original stock rom 4.1.1 Jelly bean.
Please advice. ...
Thanks

Should besolved in the next update
hi there,
yes, i had the same problem too. hopefully is a software glitch instead of a hardware problem. cause i found on the net one guy had this problem at first, then the problem became worst and it's a LCD problem. anyone tried switching off the ripple effect at the lockscreen and did the problem solved? thanks

Hi,
Had try not using the ripple effects. Its the same. However, I had raised this issue to Samsung and their service personnel replied to me that it was a software issue. Ask me to wait for next software update. Anyone who has this same issue should highlight to Samsung too. Hope there is a fast fixed.

Same here and it is not happening very often...
I'm facing the same issue and now it is happening very often... I believe they samsung need to do some thing about it..

I have to say, my phone died 2 years after. Exactly that.
When I press the power button on my phone and put it down (whether it be a few inches or a few feet away) it will turn itself on for no reason. I have installed various air-push detectors, I have tried cleaning the USB port (note this phone isn't even a month old in my hands) but nothing is working. If you know what's going on and or how to fix it let me know. I'll post updates if I get it fixed.
I've had that happen many times and even after running a logcat I've never figured out what caused it. Sometimes an app requesting su has been the culprit but most of the time I have no idea.
So you never fixed it? I'll try auto granting and using logcat

i disabled the alarm and as soon as i was going to say it might have worked, i turn my phone off and literally a second later it turned back on
well in that case you probably have to disable one app at a time and test for a day or so to figure out which one causes the wake up:banghead:
my screen on returned with the enabled tunein alarm option. i wrote them a support ticket and hope they will adress that issue as fast as possible.

Yep, it's an app causing the issue. AudioGuru used to do it to me (whenever it changed profile the screen would light up). Since the latest version it no longer does it

it is caused by an application. usually caused by live wallpapers. install dr.web antivirus scan, remove suspicious app. :good:

I think it's safe to assume it is software related. If a reboot didn't fix it then I would think hardware.

Keeps happening to me also every few days, no idea why.
Happened to my D852. Likely a software issue. I doubt exchanging will do anything.
I haven't had this issue on either of my two G3's, but I'm just tossing some steps out there to see if it might resolve it without rebooting.
Did you try the notification panel button to put it into Vibrate then back to Sound to see if it forces the Vibrate again? Also pushing it into Vibrate causes the phone to Vibrate as you do it. If vibrates doing that, you can assume it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.
Also, in the Settings menu under Sound, did you try checking the Vibrate Strength menu? Perhaps moving those slides might jolt it back or reset it via software without you having to reset your phone.
Just some ideas to see if perhaps using the UI might awake the software settings without rebooting everything to fix it. :silly:

Yep, I tried switching sound modes to quiet, to vibrate, to sound again; and I still can't get vibration to work until a proper reboot.
I have the same issue happening randomly. Has to be software related. Wouldn't stress much on it. I'm sure it will be fixed in a future update. Seems to be a global issue.
And now it happened to me =( I thought it was from deleting bloatware (Stock F400S 10k) but after restarting all work.... I'm thinking about selling G3 for Meizu MX4

I have had this happen once a day at least for the last few days.. A reboot does fix it.. But that doesn't seem to be a solution in the long term to me. I tried the messing with the sounds from the settings menu as well as trying different vibration patterns nothing works.. Its driving me nuts.
