Hello everybody.
I've bought a new Galaxy Note 2 today, and I want to transfer the contacts from my iPhone to the Galaxy Note 2. I know I need to use it through Kies, but it won't recognize it! What should I do??

First try another usb port, then reboot the pc and try again. If all fails completely uninstall Kies, reinstall it and try again.
i have same problem, kies doesnt recognise my device.

thx. it worked, but then it won't recognize the phone again...
need to uninstall it, again. this is frustrating...
I had the same problem, Samsung are still in denial! it happens to my GS3 as well. (windows 7)
A workaround is: uninstall Kies and all previous settings. (Uninstall USB driver if it isn't automatically uninstalled. )
Restart the PC, ( then check everything has uninstalled)
Download and install the latest Kies. Run the setup and (it always works with the first sync.)
But when prompted to update firmware components click cancel - Keys will prompt you to every time you connect, click cancel ( if I update it stops working )
did you try installing samsung drivers?
I have a friend he has a gt-n7100 it's a nee but kies says firmware is unsupported what can he do?
I'm running Windows 8 and after installing Kies for the first time on this laptop, it didn't find my Note 2, had to reinstall Kies and after a new reboot it finally found my phone and after that it hasn't caused any problems, it find the phone every single time when I connect it to my laptop.
Remember that you can also try right-click on the Kies icon and try run it as "Administrator" and see if that helps.

It's fine on my end. Received a replacement phone from T-Mo and updated Kies, then used Kies to update to LH2
I began having problems with Kies after the most recent update. It took me awhile to solve the problem.
Everytime I would connect my phone to the PC via USB, the PC would see it just fine. Kies would also say it was connecting to my "SGH-T999", but after a few seconds of trying to connect, I would get an error of, "Unable to connect to SGH-T999. Failed to retrieve device information." I would then be unable to sync my phone.
Reboots of phone and PC would not fix the problem.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Kies several times, trying all sorts of combinations of uninstalling drivers and deleting temp files. When I did this, I could connect and sync for one time, and one time only, and then would get the same error message.
Finally, I uninstalled Kies, selecting options to uninstall USB drivers and temp files. I then also deleted the Samsung folders in My Documents, as well as in both Program Files and Program Files (x86) (I have Win 7 Ultimate x64 installed).
I reinstalled Kies and allowed it to install USB drivers as well. The phone then connected to Kies and synced fine.
I've noticed after uninstalling and reinstalling that Windows Update says there is an important update for my Samsung MTP device for a May 2012 update. I have decided not to install this due to concerns over driver conflicts, as my current set up is working just fine.
I'm glad I was able to solve this short of a factory wipe.
I had that problem and unistalled usb drivers and and reinstalled older version usb drivers

I got that Windows update as well though that was the reason it was not working maybe ill try to uninstall that
My unicorn died, back on the pony.
even after updating to 4.1.1, i still can't connect this thing to my computer, could it be a usb problem?
it endlessly says 'connecting' on kies, and other times it'll say 'hardware id missing'. then other times the drivers all install correctly and states the the device is ready for use, but on my phone a notice comes up titled 'Attention', stating that there isn't any software on my computer that can recognize the device. sometimes it HAS WORKED on ics, but no luck so far after my recent update.
what's wrong? it's been like this since the moment i've purchased the phone, but the 'Attention' notice was new after I updated to jb.
edit:
the attention notice says:
"Unable to find software on your PC that can recognise this device. Service pack 3, Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, for Windows XP or Android File Transfer for Mac OS must be installed.
You can download and install PC Kies from (URL) in order to sync data with your device, back up data, and upgrade your device. (Windows and MAc OS are supported)."
im running windows 7. also, i think the hardware ID missing notice is linked to the attention notice.
Search Google for Samsung Galaxy s III drivers (sorry don't have a link) nd try from there.

Uninstall kies completely and download a fresh install and go from there.
Mtp error fix
I found a solution and you do not need to do a factory reset.
1. Uninstall Kies and Samsung USB Drivers
2. Go to My Computer Properties -- Device Manager -- Look For Any Android or Samsung devices.
3. Right click and select Uninstall.
4. Check "Uninstall drivers..." option.
5. After uninstalling, plug in the phone. It should work now.
Worked for me. Hope it works for you guys as well.
Good Evening folks,
I'm posting here after spending the better part of 2 days trying to figure out why this doesn't work.
So, i have the following:
model: GT-N7100
Version: 4.1.1
Build: JRo03C - ALJ1
I run a PC with windows 7 and also have a laptop with windows 8.
Now, initially i only wanted to root my device to install an addblocker on it and get rid of some bloatware. so i went and got samsung note2 toolkit here on XDA. (also tried others)
but no matter how i tried the pc (nor laptop) would see the note 2. it would plug in, it would charge... but windows ignored it otherwise.
i have tried al 8 of my USB ports on the desktop, and all 3 on the laptop. none of them work
3 different USB cables.
re-booted more then times then i can count.
i have manually installed the samsung drivers.
i have tried installing the windows MTP Porting kit
all to no avail.
So before i can even START to root... i need it to to play nice with my machines... anyone have ANY suggestions on what the hell is going on here.

Did you install Kies on your PC? That program needs to be open when you connect your phone and then it will install the needed drivers.

Or install the drivers using the Note Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
Does it show as an unknown device in windows under device manager?
I'm having the same issue but I have a suspicion that its the USB port on the phone itself as my gnex can use the same cable/USB port and show up as mtp.

My Note 2 N7100 is 'seen' by my windows 8 machine, but it doesnt seem to copy/ paste anything. Pops up with an error. The same happens on a Mac Lion machine. Installed the Android File Transfer app, but the moment I connect my phone, it pops up a message saying please restart your device so that it can be detected. I am tired of transferring individual files over AirDroid Any help?

first of all I forgot to mention that this should've been posted in Q&A section
for the problem try the following steps. after each one of them try connecting again. keep net disconnected while you follow the steps.
if it starts working then stop other wise continue.
1)use a diff comp, but you already did that , use a different cable, you didn't mention it
2)try uninstalling drivers via programs and features.
3)try installing drivers - preferably via mskip's toolkit
if you have windows 7, then directly install it
if you have windows 8, then first disable driver signature enforcement via this guide's last question.
4)try re installing windows. if you don't wanna do that then
open device manager
in view -> show hidden devices
delete each one that says samsung, note ii or note 2, android, google, adb, gt-n7100, n7100
this will ensure that you truly remove drivers
follow step 3) after this.
Hope I helped
All the usual and helpful ideas have been listed and you should definitely work thru those to make sure you are not missing something obvious but critical. I also use Win8 (64) and all was well with my Note2 showing up as an MTP device and wll working then one day, seemingly spontaneously, it suddenly didnt! When I would plug my Note2 in, Windows would give me a USB error telling me it could nto recognise the device! To cut a long story short, I tried my wife's S2 and IT appered fine as an MTP device happily enough, so that ruled out the cable, the port and the computer/OS.
I then tried my Note2 on my laptop, and once again it came up as USB error, so the problem was following the DEVICE around....
After a lot of googling, I tried on thing that fixed it instantly:
On the phone, go into Settings, Security and delete all the "Device Administrators" which in my case was just my Email app. That did delete my email account from my phone (contacts, email etc) but didnt matter as phone is just a dumb client to the mail server so no loss of any real data.
Once removed, I then plugged phone in and BOOM! MTP device happily appeared! I then went back in and just re-added my email account and re-activated Device Administrator when asked. Working ever since.
Not saying this is your problem, but it was an eye opener to me that the Device Administrator could 'lock out' the USB connection of the device....
Hope this helps.

I would also recommend checking your Windows Update log - especially if you have it set to automatic updates. After I installed the drivers off of the Samsung website, Windows Update tried to "Update" my drivers to an older version (I do manual Windows Updates). The first time it asked, I let it, and my phone couldn't connect anymore. Once I stopped that silliness I stopped having problems.
same problem usb not conecting with my pc windows7
all this is my same problem which I facing help me about how to slove this matter

I was having the same problem, but I was using a USB cord that I had from my old phone. Switched to the white one that came with my Note 2 and it started working.
Hello, I'm the new guy, kind of (I'm new to this forum but somewhat a technological handyman, so to speak).
I had recently obtained a Samsung Galaxy Ace II, everything was going good on the phone, hell, it's what? Two years old now? Anyway, I noticed the immense trouble I've been having trying to get several Windows PCs/laptops to detect anything from the phone, no driver updates, installations, not even from the trustworthy SAMSUNG Kies application. It is becoming a real problem as I really want to keep this phone, root it, installing several ROMs as I go along, but no, the computers won't even allow me to access the contents of my SD card through USB.
(Note: I have manually downloaded and installed SAMSUNG USB drivers and pooft, still nothing!)
I have tried quite a few methods to allow the PCs to establish a connection with the phone e.g. Dialing "*#7284#*, accessing "PhoneUtil", choosing "PDA" as the good mode, even switching to "MODEM" then back to "PDA"; Uninstalling/Reinstalling drivers; Attempting Kies.
I guess I am on the look out for a new-ish phone to replace this, which saddens me as I love being able to root, install various ROMs, Kernels etc, personally I like this phone too, more than my Spica running ICS (couldn't be too hard though, it wasn't stable whatsoever).
If anyone on this board could find a solution to this problem for me, I would be ever so grateful, I don't doubt it though, I love the work of XDA. Thank you.
Turn off the phone with no cable attached, press volume down, home and power at the same time and then volume up to put it in ODIN mode and connect it to the PC (use windows vista or newer so it auto installs the driver) It should install something like Samsung USB serial device. Tell if it works
Do I have to load it into ODIN mode whilst Odin is running on my PC?

For this test you dont need ODIN on the PC. Its only to see if the PC recognizes the phone

I just tested this and it appears not to be working, whatsoever. Is it necessary to have all SAMSUNG USB drivers installed on the PC?
Thank you for the idea, though. I just really want to root/mod my phone, ugh.

Windows should auto install the drivers. Connect the phone to the PC and see in device manager if there is something like an unknoen device or Samsung USB device

Thank you for the help, although my problem is not dealt with still. I have completed the steps that you had suggested, thoroughly and repeatedly, yet there is no hope for a permanent, or even temporary fix for my mobile.
Windows isn't displaying any correlation between my PC and phone, no driver software auto-installs and no sign of the device being located in the Device Manager, not even under an "Unknown device".
Is this a problem for most Ace II devices? Or am I missing something that is too obvious to consider so seriously?
Porobu once told me something like:
1. Uninstall kies and sammy usb drivers
2. Install kies again, it should promt to install USB drivers.
3. Plug in phone to pc in DL mode.
I'm not sure what you mean in your 1st post so im assuming you have yet to try this. Works for me
When do I plug the USB into the phone and boot my phone into download mode? As soon as the drivers are installed via Kies?

After kies installation complete(dont have to open), boot phone to download mode, connect to cable and plug to pc
It sounds like a broken microusb port but try something first.
Download ubuntu or any other live cd linux distro
Boot it on your pc. You dont need to install anything.
Open a terminal
*Plug the phone while it is turned on to the PC
Write in the terminal 'lsusb' without the quotes and press enter
Something like Samsung android device or MTP device should appear.
If it doesnt appear power off the phone and go to odin mode and repeat from the * the steps
Hi friends, I follow you every day and I love you!
I have a very big problem with my Note 10.1 2014 edition, that I can't solve. When I connect it to the computer (I tried 5 computers with different windows versions) it only charge the battery, but it's not recognised by kies or Odin. In Windows 8.1 it is shown as "unrecognised usb driver", in windows 7 too and it isn't seen at all in windows xp. I tried reinstalling kies, factory reset the tab, but without success. What can I do? I'm thinking about sending it in assistance.
Thank you and excuse me for my bad English!

When you plug in the tablet does it ask you (on the tablet screen) if you want to connect as a media device or charge only? Check your developer settings that you don't have debug mode set.

Also make sure drivers are installed on computer. Sometimes it can take a few minutes to install drivers. When I first put mine on computer at work I had to manually install driver's.

Yes, i reinstalled drivers through kies application, but nothing
I have the same issue. I have been searching for a fix. I want to root but PC will not recognize it or pop up with anything, tablet only charges nothing else up on tablet. I have search and searched but nothing. I am also running windows 8.1.
*****
I have now tried a 2nd PC using all USB plugs. Installed Kies nothing, uninstalled and installed only driver still nothing. Clicked version 6 times on build number to get Developer options. I enabled USB debugging.
I am starting to get upset, I just want to Root for a few functions. It shouldn't be this difficult.
Anyone have any thoughts? It could be a simple thing we are over looking.
Change cable
Also try rebooting your PC .
My laptop stops finding USB devices after about 2 weeks.
Solved
I solved selling the tablet for 430$!
For those who are still having the problem, this solution worked for me on Windows 7.
I installed the first "Download" Link from here.
