Galaxy Nexus Overheating

So I just got the Galaxy Nexus (upgraded from the Nexus S) and just after the first day of use (no heavy workload, wifi or GPS) this thing became painfully hot. We're talking touch it to your skin and *ouch* hot. Strangely the massive heat output seems to be limited to just the top quarter of the device. Also note that it takes only about 10min until it reaches 'unusable' status.
Does anyone else have experience with this problem? Admittedly I was warned by the provider I got it from that they had had feedback from customers about it's excessive heat output and other people I know have also commented to the same affect. But I never thought it would be quite this bad. I could fry an egg on this thing. Considering my Nexus S never had this issue - this is disappointing. Are we talking hardware design fail? Or perhaps a bad batch in my country?
If this was an iPhone they'd be headlines going on about 'heat-gate' and Larry Page coming out saying that we're 'cooling it wrong' lol

the nexus does get abit hot around the camera area, but it shouldnt be THAT hot lol.. what are the ambient tempreatures around where you're using the phone?

Not that hot - maybe 20-25c

Perhaps monitor battery temp with an app, it won't give you a precise indication of your processor temp, but there should be a correlation. The phone does get warm around the camera area, but never painfully so (for me). Was your AOS usage abnormally high?

I think the OP is overreacting just a little, if it burned you then the phone would have melted
Anyways, its perfectly normal. the OMAP4 chipset runs really hot, I read somewhere that it operates normally between 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here it says that the OMAP4 platform has a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. I think thats overstating it, but its all there

I used by SGSII in northern Ethiopia (Dallol), air temp was 56C, it didn't like it

Well let me put it this way. It's hot enough for me to consider claiming on warranty. No phone should generate that much heat right next to your head/ear. That's unusable in real terms (at least with this particular one). And i've had my fair share of android phones in the past to compare...

The Tegra2 chipset runs VERY hot when overclocked as well, I've had hot experiences on both my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my G2x, and I can also say that the OMAP4 runs hotter than that! Just offering opinion is all, it's perfectly normal for it to be running extra hot, and it happens fairly quickly.
I completely agree with you that the phone does get abnormally hot, but then again, from my experience, so does the RAZR with a sister chip in it.

Android 4.0.1, stock Nexus Galaxy, going on 2 weeks. It's in an otterbox defender case, after 1.5 hours of running video it's warm in my hands, but that's under constant workload that nearly drained the whole battery. In other words during normal operation I am not finding the serious problem you are describing. Empathy out to you.

What temps we're talking about? Mine stays at +36C +38C while browsing web/watching youtube and gets a bit (around +41C) hotter when playing games. And these temps are far from hot-to-touch.

Sometimes my GN becomes really hot too. It also happens when i'm watching hd video for a half an hour or more. Then it turns terribly hot.

mine goes to 48C and then it starts lagging like hell

Mine gets warm around the camera and earpiece. It's pretty normal, I'd say.

There are multiple threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before: it's a dual core device, it runs hot, it's not "overheating" unless your phone is crashing, shutting down, or otherwise obviously malfunctioning in some way other than getting hot.
What do you mean by "it reaches 'unusable' status" though? Are you just afraid of using it because it seems hot? Mine gets quite hot when I use it heavily...have kept it going for several hours in this state (while plugged in) with no other issues.

Mine gets hot in the same area, but it has never been that hot, just warm. My OG Droid was OCd to 1.3ghz and that literally reached 150+ degrees F quite a few times and is still fine to this day. The OMAP SoCs seem to run a bit hotter than others, but they can definitely handle the heat.

Basically out of the many smart phones i've had in the past. This is the first that I would say I would refuse to hold it up next to my ear due to the excessive heat. It's bad enough just holding it landscape to type on let alone sticking next to my head. It's really annoying considering how otherwise the interface and physical design of the device is better then anything else i've seen on the market.
I think i'm going to get one of those laser thermometers to find just what the temp on the surface of this thing actually is.

It's hot on the back of the phone like other uses have said, not the front where your ear would be (unless it is which is an entirely different problem). Plus, when your phone reaches those temps through extraneous use (videos, games), you normally wouldn't be putting it near your ear anyways. I don't see this as a huge issue. If you do something taxing, much like a computer, expect the phone to work a little bit harder and hotter.
Oh and I doubt it's hot enough to fry an egg. You would smell the plastic melt first.

I've had once when my GNex was really hot. It was when I try factory reset many times since there was a bug that factory reset does nothing in a custom rom. But I didn't know at that time. I tried reset, flash rom, reset, etc. My GNes ended up really hot.

The only time my galaxy nexus got really hot was when I was switching kernels every 2-3 days, and one kernel (I think it was one of Franco's earlier builds) made it run hot even when I wasn't using the phone that intensely. Changed the kernel, and it's never been hot since (I play games, listen to music, browse web, push notifications, etc.) I don't do much video/HD streaming though...

I have been getting that too. Around the earpiece gets warm when only slightly used. Also, I can hear a faint buzzing humming sound from there. Open the back cover..can hear it from the camera too. Is something wrong with my phone

Tmobile version overheating

I've been reading the other thread about overheating of the S4. Mine will get warm to hot just by downloading from the Play Store and playing withe the menu. I tried a factory reset, microsd reformat, etc.
Does anyone else with the tmobile version notice the phone getting hot?

Sure - any huge data usage, (especially with 3g/4g/lte) will cause the phone to heat up in the cpu area - this can be coupled with high graphics usage, and/or high ram usage -
electricity generates heat as a waste product - it wont get too hot, but it will heat up.
My gs2 would occasionally get so hot i didn't want to hold it or let it sit in my pocket
My new gs4 got plenty warm when redownloading my podcasts, and durring the first google device restore.

But I don't even get edge where I live. I've been using wifi and it overheats in like 10 minutes. I hope it's just a software issue, if not ill get a replacement. I just wanted see if its just me.

For me so far, the only time it is noticeably warm is when I use the camera for an extended period of time. Haven't played any intense games on there though like NFS.

I find that my microsd card get hot when accessed a lot, but that's not new, same as in my S3.

Mine is hot too. I haven't done anything though.

I believe there is firmware update that is compatible with the I9505 Tmo variant. You may want to do some searching and check it out.

Heat is not the same thing as over-heating. These chips have a maximum operating temperature rating of upwards of 70c. There are a myriad of reasons why any two devices would operate at higher or lower temperatures including ambient temperature, radio actions (high-throughput or low signal recovery), and of course running processes. There will always be people who think their phone is "too hot" since it is a purely subjective claim.

yeah honestly is at 40c and thats beyond hot!!

My phone heats up when I talk to people on phone over 10 m top part heats up like crazy lol
but again it maybe just because of call and stuff but my s3 never got that hot

Yep, mine heats up on the top back of the phone. But it doesn't overheat when I'm on the phone though. I talked for over two hours and the phone stayed cold. But if I play around with menu and installing apps, it gets noticeably warm. I used S2 for two years and didn't remember it getting this warm.

mine heats up probably i am using 4g data and voip app to call people
but it heats up top Samsung name area like u can feel it in like 10m lol

Like others mine heats up at the top back at times but never to a serious, uncomfortable degree. Pretty sure my Blaze would get hotter at times from less taxing usage.

So hopefully this is just software related issues and not hardware.....

If you're really that concerned just go exchange it.....

Try turning down the brightness of the screen, I saw some reviews say the density of the screen adds majorly to the heat.

I have to wait 20 days to exchange it. I could return it but my micro SIM card doesn't work on the S2.
Anyway, I just received an OTA update.....

I've used my micro sim in a GS2, a MyTouch slide and a G1. It will fit, just line up the 3 pins to the 3 plates on the sim and it will work

The heat Issue?

I am thinking to buy the phone but I saw some posts there are some heat issues. So what is the problem besides the phone getting too hot? Is it shuting down when it gets too hot or get really laggy? Is there any other problem when heated except it gets really hot?

I haven't experienced any heat issues. I have yet to feel my g3 get warm Tbh.
Others (not sure which model) have reported issues with heat, to the point that it causes the device to throttle the brightness down. Again haven't experienced this on my at&t model.

Same here not felt it get warm even watching video.

When the phone gets hot several things happen.
1) The CPU is clocked down to help lower heat
2) Brightness is capped to help lower heat
3) If the phone continues to get too hot (usually when its already hot and you then start to play a really intense game, or benchmark the phone may shut itself down.

People complained a lot with the Korean model but I haven't seen anyone with a US model complain. Maybe the type of person that waits is less likely to be a phone gamer? They may have actually tweaked it so it doesn't activate as quickly or harshly. I do know some people disabled it on the Korean model. I haven't heard of anything bad happening but those few people may have felt dumb if it destroyed their phone and not posted that it did...

I have no heating problem with my lg g3 international D855 16gb model, even during quadrant test or playing games.

I disabled the thermal protection on my AT&T version and yes, I've felt it get quite hot while playing Final Fantasy 6. The heat radiated mainly through the metal power button but the entire top half of the device got pretty hot. Didn't bother me all that much tho, as I've had other devices get hot like that in the past.

I use exposed app CPU temp my g3 sits at about 30c and 45c which is normal temps and about 50ish whith thermal protection on disabled.

My girlfriend picked this up yesterday and this is happening to her G3. Not playing games though, just browsing the internet/reading an article. It makes no sense to me. How can you take control over that? She doesn't want to root the phone.
But yeah, just reading something or even looking at Facebook, the phone gets way too hot.

I picked up the Verizon version yesterday. It's gotten pretty warm around the power button a few times for me also. Typically not bad or what I would consider unusual with one or two exceptions.

My G3 (UK) go very very hot yesterday when I was on the train playing a graphically intensive game.
It shut itself down and then refused to turn on again. Ever.
I tried everything all night but no joy. I got a replacement handset today.
I'm sure it was because of the overheating that the phone malfunctioned. Without knowing exactly what has happened to it the timing is too coincidental for it to be random hardware failure. It was SUPER hot!

This is strange. Does the kernel not shut the phone down before it "fries" the SOC?,unless the throttling temps are too high? Wonder if this is linked to the display flickering problem myself and another poster had.

Funny you mention display flickering. I had that about 2 weeks ago. The display started flickering really badly, like nothing I've ever seen on any Android device, and I needed to pull the battery to reset. It didn't boot straight away either, it had to cool down a bit.

all phones get warm if you are on it for an extended period of time, surfing (using data), gaming etc etc screen on for long periods of time. those saying they can game and not have heat are lying to you. phone gets warm when screen is on for extended period of time and by phone I mean any phone

Yeah, i had a flickering display which didnt go away.I returned that phone. Another poster yesterday had the same issue.Im wondering if the GPU is frying itself? Although the GPU does throttle as well as the CPU. Running Antutu I would get 60+deg C maybe playing a game for an extended period of time for example is causing damage? Just a theory.

Anyone ever notice their phone getting hot and shutting down features or even turning off? I know this might be kinda extreme... My 6 pro has been shutting down all sorts of things just to cool the phone and eventually shutting off. This has been happening while I'm in a sauna after working out with the lowest brightness on even. But my Note 10 plus never even mentioned anything to me ever even with full brightness. Thanks for the help

It happened to me once with a Galaxy S7 but it was in a heatwave that said I read on forums that several users complained about an overheating problem on the pixel 6.
As the chip is made in partnership with Samsung and it is well known that exynos chips overheat other than waiting for software upgrades or sending it back there is nothing that can be done.

Interesting that your Note 10 Plus works in a sauna-environment. I would definitely call that an extreme situation where no phones needs to properly work, after all we are talking about an ambient temperature of ~ 65°C to 90°C, that's much hotter than even a desert. Most commercial products only operate up until 70° Celsius, Industrial usually up to 85°, Military ones even higher.
Personally I would never/have never taken my phone inside a sauna out of fear it might get damaged, after all it's a thousand dollar product. Treating it with care and caution is usually a wise choice, if longevity is of any concern.
Most smartphone (and desktop) processors can only take about ~100 Degrees Celsius (internal, chip temperature), before they throttle down into the abyss and try to cool down (to prevent permanent damage). But if they are in a sauna... there is no cooling down, lol. Afterall they lack a dedicated fan. As an example: It's a situation comparable with your ambient room temperature in the summer - if you have 30° Celsius in your room, but outside it's 40°, your room of course will not cool down, but heat up even more. ESPECIALLY not if you have several heaters on (= processor, display, et cetera).
That's why it's quite the achievement of your Note 10 to properly function in that kind of situation, that seems like a well-balanced phone in terms of heat/cooling. Props to Samsung in that case.
According to several reports in this forum, Tensor can get quite toasty, even in a normal environment. It shutting down in a sauna does not surprise me. There's probably nothing that you can do here, expect switch the phone or hope for a Google firmware update that lowers the coreclock.

I haven't had any overheating. I think the very first day when I was setting up the phone and restoring from my cloud backup it got a little warm, but mine hasn't overheated at all or shut down anything. I am probably not pushing the envelope of what any phone could handle, however.

Haven't witnessed any overheating on my unit.

Never had this happen on any of my recent phones including my Note 10 plus and my buddy has a new 20 Samsung as well.. No problems for them or anyone else with their iphones and a few others while they are in sauna as well.. even my samsung ear buds murder this thing lol

NOTE TO ALL POTENTIAL 6 OR 6P BUYERS: this is not a common phenomenon. Just want to put that out there.
I use GSAM bettery monitor (with the ADB mods) and it works great to watch the temp. Once or maybe twice it got warm (107F) when I was backing up the entire unit to my NAS (or vice versa). Ever since it gets warmer when I use it more, and then cooler when I don't.

I think you answered your own question buddy... The temperature in the sauna ranges typically between 60oC to 95oC. Your Pixel phone is designed to operate up to 45oC at extreme situations.
I'm afraid the problem lies with the owner in your case, not the device itself.

A Sauna?! A SAUNA?? Did I read that right? I .... I .... I just don't understand. And when my sister "washes" her Galaxy S20 under the tap, the first thing she says: "Samsung says it's OK! The phone is Waterproof and Heat Proof and Mud Proof!" ... ok the last two things are false but every galaxy owner I've come across thinks their phone can be used in a shower, hmmm....

Again... I knew I would catch some crap for posting this.. but I'm trying to figure out why most and yes I said most phones do not have a problem including my old note 10+ and also my other friends phones and random people as well..
My Note would be full brightness and wouldn't even really feel hot. Warm yes and it would continue to work just perfect.. I even tried to put my 6 pro in battery saver mode which shuts down cores and it still could not last 5 mins at the lowest brightness.. My Note in performance mode and full brightness would last the full 25+ minutes I would be in there.
Looking for advice or answers. I've stated comparisons with the same scenarios with two completely different phones of my own along with others. One works great and another does not..

Screen of huawei dark even at 100% brightness

Hi, I’m having a problem with my Huawei Mate 20 that I bought in 2019. The screen brightness is too low even when set to 100%. This started happening two days ago after I spent the day outside in the sun (i don't know if hot temperatures influenced but has already been 2 days so is strange). When I got home, I charged my phone and opened some apps, but it started crashing and the screen went black. I tried force rebooting it multiple times but the screen remained black. I thought it might be a battery issue so I charged it for an hour and a half but still nothing. After 40 minutes, I accidentally pointed a lamp at my phone and could see that it was working perfectly but the brightness was very low. A similar thing happened to me in 2020 but I can’t remember how I fixed it. I tried searching for solutions online and on XDA developers but none of them worked for me except one that involved ADB which I can’t try because for some reason I can’t connect my phone to my PC with USB debugging. My warranty has expired like 2 years ago so lol... and I haven’t received a response from Huawei support yet (i emailed them yesterday)

It was heat damaged. Anything above 125F can do it. Exposure to direct sunlight on a hot day is especially bad.
I did this accidentally to my Samsung S4+ years ago. Very faded out and got worse the more I used it.
Oddly after sitting unused it got slightly better. After I got a new phone it sat for months unused, it improve further still. After 3 years it appears to operate normally now. The crystals seem to have reverted back. Peculiar critters.
Yours may or may not do the same. There may be a way to accelerate the process. Mine sat in both hot and cold environments during that time.
Putting a charge on the crystals by using the phone is probably what hindered their recovery.
Either replace the display or let it rest. Using it will likely make it worse...

Yours may or may not do the same. There may be a way to accelerate the process. Mine sat in both hot and cold environments during that time.
Putting a charge on the crystals by using the phone is probably what hindered their recovery.
Either replace the display or let it rest. Using it will likely make it worse...

Hi black, thank you for the warm welcome and for responding to me. In fact, now that I think about it, the last time this happened to me, I had exposed it to a lot of sunlight. Would it be a good idea to place it in a cooler or shadier location to speed up its recovery? And approximately how long should I let it rest? About a week?

Cooling it might hinder it's recovery. Not really sure. I was surprised when mine eventually recovered. Not saying this will be your outcome.
Also it may take way longer then is practical
If you need to pull data leave it sit for as long as you can wait.
It's back lighting is working, right?

Lol, it looks like i just ****ed up my phone. Before I started this thread on the forum, for pure curiosity, I tried to activate the torch but it didn’t work despite multiple attempts. I hope it’s not a hardware issue ()

It can easily happen; protect from drops, water... and heat.
The battery may have failed if the phone died completely.
