Just checked. I am getting haptic feedback on my menu and back keys.

Probably a stupid question but have you gone into Settings> Sound then scrolled down to the System Settings list? At the bottom of the page you'll find the Haptic check box.. I hope that's all it is for you.
Yea its checked... thanks tho

Hey mike, I have 2 more ideas. First one is. Have you tried removing your battery for at least 10 second and holding your power key button in for at least 10 second to fully drain your phone of power (a "soft reset" then putting the battery back in and turning your phone back on? The second idea would be to Factory Reset your phone. Again sorry if these are stupid questions.. You've probably already tried these things.
Havent done factory reset yet trying everything else first ill try soft reboot... already wipe cache and dalvik and fixed permission idk why the keyboard is the only thing that has it. Thanks again

Resolved ... power saving mode was enabled I knew it was gonna be something stupid
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
I'm glad you figured it out. I learned something from your issue too. Good stuff.
Thanks, now I know why mine was no longer working. Didn't realize power save mode even did that.
On a weirder note, my text notifications set themselves to default tone instead of the separate one I had chosen. Power save doesn't do that too does it? Cause I can't imagine how that would save power.

So here's my scenario, I let a friend of mine borrow my phone for a couple of hours for work and ever since he returned it my 4 capacitive buttons have been acting up, my menu button presses itself it seems and I cannot hold down the home button to review my recent apps or access the task manager because my phone reboots itself . I do not know what he did or if he messed around with it but according to him he didn't do anything. Is there anyway anyone can help me remap the buttons to stock? Any help is appreciated, Thank You!

Maybe liquid damage?

I'd try an odin to factory reset and see if it's software related. If its still acting up after a reset then it'll be a hardware problem.

I think its software related because my search button vibrates once on press and then it vibrates again on release, do any of you guys know how to remap the buttons?

If you're not rooted, have you tried doing a reset?
phone settings > privacy > factory data reset
will wipe your data but agree with the earlier posters... if doing a factory reset doesn't fix it, it's probably a hardware issue (perhaps water damage).
Are you running maddogins lockscreen mod?

Time to tell your friend to buy you a new phone!
Sounds like LD. Try the reset if you can, and hope for the best.

I've done a hard reset a couple of times and the problem is still there. I'm starting to think it is hardware related, the weird thing is that I've had the phone since it was released and it never gave me these problems until recently..

Hi everyone, I have a completely stock GSIII on I747UCLH9 and the back and menu buttons only light up when I start the phone. They function fine when I manage to hit them but it's getting annoying hunting for them. Anyone else have the problem? Anyone know how to fix without a factory reset? Will factory reset even fix it? Thanks, Jeff.

They dont stay lit all the time... They go off after a few seconds after using them, or waking the phone...
Well mine don't light up at all after the OS is loaded.

I mistook your first post as saying they light up when you use them... and what OS loading, you said it's stock... You mean after it's booted?
Reflash the stock ROM to rule out a SW issue, if they still don't work, bring the phone back...
The idea here is that I don't want to do a factory reset. And I definitely don't want to put any roms on it since it's going back to the store if I can't solve this.

It was set always off. I'm not really surprised that the people at Samsung said factory reset. It seems like every company I've ever bought a phone from use that suggestion instead of actually helping. I will be hitting your thanks button.

Hi guys,
I searched the XDA forums but didn't find an answer for this.
When my Note 2 freeze, is there a way to force reboot (restart) my Android device? I have found a lot of answers on hard reset, but nothing about hard reboot. In the iOS world, I can hold down home and power and it would always perform a force restart. From what I have seen, the only way to hard restart my Android is to pull my battery out. Is there a way to perform a hard restart via buttons only (when the device is frozen)?
On a related issue,
Its weird, my "auto rotation" stops working, but repeated restart and complete shutdown and boot up didn't fix this issue until I pull the battery and it works again. I wonder if "shutdown" is really shutdown....
No reboot keys unfortunately. Stupid move on Sammy's part this time around. There is no hybernate on Samsung. Try recalibrating the gyroscope... Either that or a rogue app. Also... Smart rotation is best, imo. It will use the ffc to follow eyes and if it fails... (Low light or whatever reason) It uses the gyro. Good luck

Samsung left the hard reboot out. You have to do a battery pull.
Battery pull only

Ios has a key combo to reboot because the battery is sealed in. We can pull the battery quicker than up up down down left right left right.
I got my SM-P601 about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfectly since then, until last night. I left my note 10.1 with my father and left, when I got back, it was acting really weird. When I press the power button, you hear that sound that it woke up, but the screen doesn't power up until about 2 seconds later, it performs normally afterwards. Tried rebooting, no luck. It still gets weirder, so I leave it for an hour or so, when I try later, the screen no longer powers up (I don't know it's that or it has failed, crashed or something) but it is obviously powered up because when I press the power button, you hear that usual sound, and the same thing when you unlock it, I navigated through pages and even opened up some games, it's all working, except there's no screen, just plain black. The bigger problem is, I rooted it, so no warranty for me.

If you can get to recovery power+volume up , then wipe data & reboot .
I tend to agree, factory reset is worth trying.
Alright I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna need help navigating through the menu. After I power it off, I press the volume up and power and release the power button after about 5 seconds right? (I can't tell when the samsung logo shows up). The thing I wanna make sure of, the factory reset option, is it the third or fourth option? I am not sure if it is the same as my GS4. The confirmation afterwards is the eighth option. Can someone confirm that?

It`s the fourth line " wipe data/factory reset.
Okay I think I successfully factory reset it. However, nothing's changed. The weird thing is, the touch screen is working, it is functioning properly and I can select apps etc... but I just can't see anything.

Just because your Knox flag has been tripped, does not automatically mean your warranty has been completely voided. Samsung is going to have to prove that your rooting the tablet is what caused the screen failure.
Were you running a custom ROM or kernel? If not, then there is no way I can think of that simply rooting the tablet caused the screen failure.
Now that's not to say your warranty isn't voided for another reason such as the tablet was dropped et al.
Just thinking outside the box... Did you happen to have Screen Filter or a like application installed at the time your screen went black? If so, someone may have adjusted the brightness setting to zero and that could be causing the problem.
Good luck.
I hope that's the case, can they even tell it is rooted without the screen being on?
To answer your questions, I haven't installed a custom ROM neither a screen filter app, I tried adjusting the brightness multiple times so one of the tries must have actually hit the correct place, still no effect though.
If nothing works, I think my only option is to take it back to samsung.

ya you should try samsung .at this point it wont hurt .just tell them screen went out and go from there. don't mention root .unless they ask.they will be able to tell anyway.this should be covered under warranty.good luck. let us know how it goes.
I had the exact same issue with this tablet.
The problem is that the backlight is dead.
If you look closely at the screen under the light, you'll be able to see some icons and letters.
In my case, Samsung did not cover the warranty because my device was not purchased in Canada and it was rooted.
I mean Canada didn't even have the device at the time.
Long story short, I did something bad to get my tablet "repaired".
But I blame Samsung for having such a crappy warranty service.
Yeah I think I'll just take it to them. I'll let you know what happens.

Just a wild guess but I suppose you could go buy a new one from a retailer here in Canada, swap out the faulty one for the new one and return it claiming it's faulty (I doubt any of them check the SN on the back and the one on the box match), or I guess you could even swap the SN on the box from the SN on the US box so it does match.
Not saying he did that, but it's the easiest way to get it "repaired"
Come to think of it you can do this for any tablet, even though this is downright fraud. So please don't.
Ok, so i can't really tell if this particular problem has been posted before but from what i have looked through it has not. However, if i have just missed it then please just redirect me to it as long as it matches my problem so please read through my post before posting that its been done.
So moving along, as the title says i have a Samsung Galaxy s2 SGH-T989 and i've been running CyanogenMod 10.2. Oh and before i forget, the battery is not dead and just in case i've tried to turn it on while plugged in only to get the same results. Anyways over the past 24 hours my phone started shutting off randomly to the point now that it shuts off before finishing booting. If it does finish it doesn't stay on long enough to do anything and sometimes it barely turns on.
Has this been heard of before and even if not what can i try or do?
Three words:
Broken power button
Apparently it's a very common issue with this phone.
It has yet to happen on my phone. I hope it never does lol.
You can try replacing the button yourself or take it to a cellphone repair shop.
Sounds right, the button is difficult to replace, best to have a shop replace it. I have fixed a couple by tightening the button. You tube, easy power button fix t989 by iamkambodian. Only if you're OK with taking it apart.
Ps, you can feel the button click if it's good.
