Ok, so i can't really tell if this particular problem has been posted before but from what i have looked through it has not. However, if i have just missed it then please just redirect me to it as long as it matches my problem so please read through my post before posting that its been done.
So moving along, as the title says i have a Samsung Galaxy s2 SGH-T989 and i've been running CyanogenMod 10.2. Oh and before i forget, the battery is not dead and just in case i've tried to turn it on while plugged in only to get the same results. Anyways over the past 24 hours my phone started shutting off randomly to the point now that it shuts off before finishing booting. If it does finish it doesn't stay on long enough to do anything and sometimes it barely turns on.
Has this been heard of before and even if not what can i try or do?
Three words:
Broken power button
Apparently it's a very common issue with this phone.
It has yet to happen on my phone. I hope it never does lol.
You can try replacing the button yourself or take it to a cellphone repair shop.
Sounds right, the button is difficult to replace, best to have a shop replace it. I have fixed a couple by tightening the button. You tube, easy power button fix t989 by iamkambodian. Only if you're OK with taking it apart.
Ps, you can feel the button click if it's good.

Well i tried the method in the video and that doesn't seem to have fixed it. Also not entirely sure its the power button but i don't really know how to tell either. Anyways if there are any other ideas please let me know.
This is what I did when I messed up a recovery: plugged it in the computer and held all 3 buttons until Samsung then just volume up. It got me into download mode where I used Odin to flash another recovery.

send it to mobiletechvideos.com - they will fix it.
Or flash SearchAsPowerButton MOD along with Volume wake ROM - my ROM ICS supports it.
Wondering if anybody knows any places in Canada (GTA) where they might replace these? Sending it in to the states is a little expensive when considering shipping. =(
Yeah I have some issues with mine. It'll sometimes not lock the phone and it'll register as being held down instead. It's not too serious for me, though.

Just open up your phone and clean the dip switch with some rubbing alcohol, not to much but do it a couple of times. Make sure to let it dry before you turn it back on.
This fixed mine.

That worked for me as well. When I bought my phone, the power button was so sensitive that even the slightest amount of pressure on it would cause it to boot or turn the screen off. I was going to return the phone, but a few minutes work with alcohol and a Q-tip saved me the hassle.
Cleaning my button worked for me, but that was 3 months ago and now its back to not working. Worst part is that my volume buttons arent feeling to healthy either! Hopefully it holds on until upgrade time .
Don't be a p**** take your phone apart dab your button with some electronics cleaner and press the button a few hundred times and repeat and then put it back together.

If you guys are going to be opening the phone again at some point, it would be a great idea to take a couple of picture.
I think that my cappy is about to have the same issue (sometimes it doesn't recognize the power button) and it would be nice to have some king of guide to do the cleaning.
Try to clean around and inside or open it up and clean the power button, if that doesn't work you should just get a new phone. The captivate is already really old
do u think it can be solved by an upgrade

Yes, if you upgrade the phone, the new one comes with a new power button - problem solved!
Just use the rom that have option to wake the phone up by the volume rocker buttons. Also make sure to get screen off app to lock the phone up.
I opened my cappy and cleaned the button with contact cleaner, and now it works like new.

Hey now, some of us still like to keep our phones maintained until we do get a new phone
Or.... can't afford a new phone every 2 years... 199.99 isn't cheap (or 700 for unlocked and off contract)

I'm running cm10 and under Settings» lockscreen» Screen Security there is an option to unlock the screen using the menu key (hard key on far left). Just tried it out, works flawlessly. Unfortunately I can't help you find the app you need and flashing a rom without using the power button may be problematic. Best of luck to you!

I would love to get CM, but the only problem is that since my power button is stuck, it's gonna be a pain to flash. And, not only that, as it is right now, since my power button is stuck, I was able to put it into ODIN mode and restore to stock unrooted to take it in, but I'm afraid that I might flash, and then the power button magically un-sticks, and then I'm screwed, cause I can't unroot it. Anyways, just today and tomorrow left, so not so bad. I actually think I can take it.

Basically it just keeps resetting, after loading the splash screen it resets, after the warning message in odin it resets to a black screen that vibrates every two seconds or so. Can anyone help?
Can you get into download mode or cwm? If so you can fix it. Use search and you can easily fix it with Odin or cwm.

nope, it just reboots
I had this problem, try pressing your power button a little hard a couple times
The power button could be internally stuck, causing the phone to reset like this
Yea it was my power button, I did exactly that and now it's working again.

i think i just had this same issue. i went as far as unrooting my phone and now im thinking ok the phone works now but i wonder if it was just the power button all this time. i did have to keep pressing the power button to get it to go into recovery mode. finally got it to stop rebooting and i unrooted. thought i had a bad root. but i didn't just root the phone when this happened. i was ending a call and sitting my phone down on my work desk and then it started rebooting over and over and over again. reading this just gave me confidence in rooting again with caution and monitoring phone with one eye open like pbs,:cyclops:
All right. I just received a Samsung Galaxy S2 T-Mobile (White) from a friend.
It doesn't boot up to the Stock Android. It's not rooted it's completely stock.
When you start it up it just goes to the Samsung Logo Screen then into a Samsung Android 4G screen in which the loading bar gets a lil over halfway and it just turns off and restarts the process. I'm not sure whether it's the power button issue i've been seeing in the past. Or if it's something wrong with the motherboard power button area.
I am also providing a video I recorded just to see what happens when I put the battery inside an then press the power button.
I was wondering if anyone could give me any things to try to fix it or a possible solution as I would like to fix this issue and root the phone.
http://youtu.be/Ud4bb12gARw
Youtube of putting battery in and powering up.. An how the boot goes.
Is it constantly vibrating in your hand as it reboots? If so then most likely it's the power button
You could try circling around the power button with a pin. Blow it out then hit it with an eraser (or any large rubber item). That worked for me,

There are a couple of things you can try here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931310
I got my SM-P601 about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfectly since then, until last night. I left my note 10.1 with my father and left, when I got back, it was acting really weird. When I press the power button, you hear that sound that it woke up, but the screen doesn't power up until about 2 seconds later, it performs normally afterwards. Tried rebooting, no luck. It still gets weirder, so I leave it for an hour or so, when I try later, the screen no longer powers up (I don't know it's that or it has failed, crashed or something) but it is obviously powered up because when I press the power button, you hear that usual sound, and the same thing when you unlock it, I navigated through pages and even opened up some games, it's all working, except there's no screen, just plain black. The bigger problem is, I rooted it, so no warranty for me.

If you can get to recovery power+volume up , then wipe data & reboot .
I tend to agree, factory reset is worth trying.
Alright I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna need help navigating through the menu. After I power it off, I press the volume up and power and release the power button after about 5 seconds right? (I can't tell when the samsung logo shows up). The thing I wanna make sure of, the factory reset option, is it the third or fourth option? I am not sure if it is the same as my GS4. The confirmation afterwards is the eighth option. Can someone confirm that?

Okay I think I successfully factory reset it. However, nothing's changed. The weird thing is, the touch screen is working, it is functioning properly and I can select apps etc... but I just can't see anything.

Just because your Knox flag has been tripped, does not automatically mean your warranty has been completely voided. Samsung is going to have to prove that your rooting the tablet is what caused the screen failure.
Were you running a custom ROM or kernel? If not, then there is no way I can think of that simply rooting the tablet caused the screen failure.
Now that's not to say your warranty isn't voided for another reason such as the tablet was dropped et al.
Just thinking outside the box... Did you happen to have Screen Filter or a like application installed at the time your screen went black? If so, someone may have adjusted the brightness setting to zero and that could be causing the problem.
Good luck.
I hope that's the case, can they even tell it is rooted without the screen being on?
To answer your questions, I haven't installed a custom ROM neither a screen filter app, I tried adjusting the brightness multiple times so one of the tries must have actually hit the correct place, still no effect though.
If nothing works, I think my only option is to take it back to samsung.

ya you should try samsung .at this point it wont hurt .just tell them screen went out and go from there. don't mention root .unless they ask.they will be able to tell anyway.this should be covered under warranty.good luck. let us know how it goes.
I had the exact same issue with this tablet.
The problem is that the backlight is dead.
If you look closely at the screen under the light, you'll be able to see some icons and letters.
In my case, Samsung did not cover the warranty because my device was not purchased in Canada and it was rooted.
I mean Canada didn't even have the device at the time.
Long story short, I did something bad to get my tablet "repaired".
But I blame Samsung for having such a crappy warranty service.
Yeah I think I'll just take it to them. I'll let you know what happens.

Just a wild guess but I suppose you could go buy a new one from a retailer here in Canada, swap out the faulty one for the new one and return it claiming it's faulty (I doubt any of them check the SN on the back and the one on the box match), or I guess you could even swap the SN on the box from the SN on the US box so it does match.
Not saying he did that, but it's the easiest way to get it "repaired"
Come to think of it you can do this for any tablet, even though this is downright fraud. So please don't.
