I don't have any problem in a standard wifi but when i try to connect to a public wifi I get full signal but don't have internet.
I supposed to open the browser and have the agreement page but don't have it.
My friends with galaxy 2 and iPhone get the page as that open the browser but not me on my HOX.
I tried to install the chrome browser and still having the same problem.
You can see the screen shots of the galaxy and the HOX.
Check the connection details on your friends S2 and make sure they are the same, also the public wifi might require you the owner of allowing you to access it(i don't know how it works, but at some cafes once I ask the waiter for internet access, it starts working immediately without password or anything)

I know, that's the problem.
My device doesn't direct me to the page, not from the default browser and not with the chrome.
I'm trying to refresh the page and it doesn't help.
help
Any suggestions?

OK so this is bigger than the title I think but I can't be the only person with this issue.
Here in the UK I use the East Coast Mainline train service into and out of London. On that service they offer free wifi and having used it time and time again, it works OK.
But my Desire doesn't like it.
The service works by letting you connect and then redirecting your browser to a log on page where you need to enter your registered email address. Again on other devices this works fine
But on the Desire I am getting an error on the redirect saying that there is a problem with the server. From my laptop, I am having no problem reaching the server to log on.
So I can't use the service.
Now my guess is that the browser is somehow trying to render a mobile version of the page or something so I have tried both the built in browser and Dolphin HD but still the same error.
Now I know that some other hot spots use similar redirected web pages so maybe this is a problem with them. I have not come across any others yet so don't know.
So have anybody else come across this either on the trains I use or with hot spots in general and if so, is there a work around?
Thanks
Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious but have you put Dolphin into Desktop mode when you tried it?

From what I can see, this is the default setting (I assume you mean the "Mobile view (GWT)" setting)
Has this got something to do with the desire not having proxy support?
Have the same issues in hotels but my iPhone connects no problem.

Not quie. If you press Menu and go to "More", and then click "Settings", there is an option called "User Agent". You can change this to Android, iPhone or Desktop. I'd give Desktop mode a go if it's not already on there.

I think most paid for hot spots use these browser redirects when you first connect. I don't think it's a proxy thing though because you would have similar issues on some browsers on laptops etc
Can't find that option in settings anywhere! Is in in the menu option when in the browser?

Yeah, just double checked I gave the right instructions and it's definitely in there.

No, but you know we were talking about the Dolphin HD browser, not the standard one? Sorry if there was any confusion.
It's certainly showing as an option for me so I will give this a try next week and see if it makes a difference.
The problem however is not so much not being able to connect but how the Desire behaves when it finds an open wifi connection with no internet.
What I see is that the device associates to the wifi and gets an IP address.
Because it now has a live wifi connection, it stops using cellular data (3G, GPRS etc).
But because that wifi connection does not allow onwards connection to the internet (because I can't log in via the web page), nothing syncs! So for the duration of the train journey, the phone is not syncing mail etc.
The work around here is to remember to turn off the wifi before I get on the train and back on when I get off but that's a pain to remember each time.
I tried changing the user agent to Desktop (on default browser) as described here but had same problem trying to connect.

Possible Solution
Long time lurker and have registered to try and help you out.
I had no problem with other phones on East Coast WiFi until trying to connect with my Desire.
After some messing around this is what you can do;
Try to connect as normal on the default browser and you'll receive the certificate error.
Clear that and input httpwwweastcoastwifi.train/ into the address bar. As it won't let me post links insert the usual Internet punctuation.
You'll then be able to log into the welcome screen as normal and access the internet.
Save the above address as a bookmark to save typing it in each time.
Strangely the access in the East Coast Lounges don't folllow this malarkey and you can just access the Internet without inputting any user details.
Hope it works for you.

Good man
I was on the train again today and even messing about with the agent ID, no joy. I did spot the certificate error though so wonder if the Desire is not happy with that.
In the meantime I have tried the phone on other hot spots that have a browser log on screen and it has worked fine.
So it looks like East Coast has an odd setup but I am back on the train on Tuesday morning so will try the above then and report back
Many thanks
No problem, hope it works on Tuesday.
It works!!!!
Thank you so much for this.
In the end, I ended up setting up a bookmark for the URL you gave (eastcoastwifi.train) and then going straight for that. This then avoids the need to cancel the invalid certificate first.
As soon as I clicked said bookmark, I was presented with the correct East Coast log on screen and then bingo. Free WiFi
Of course I had forgotten just how slow it was on the train but never mind.
Again. Many many thanks
Pleased to hear it worked, I wonder many Desire users have just given up! As for the speed on East Coast, I suppose the best thing you can say is that its free and there's usually a 3G reception if all else fails unlike West Coast.
I upgraded from my G1 to the new G2.
I am in the military and currently deployed to Iraq. I pay for wifi internet in my dorm. Using my Laptop or my G1 i am able to connect to a wifi service out here that i pay for. once i connect i pull up the browser and it will redirect me to the log in page for the server (where we have to enter a username and pass to allow acceses to the internet. without entering it we are only connected localy). when i use my G2 i can connect to the wifi hotspot no problem, it shows me "obtaining IP adress" and then says "connected to balad-hotspot" just like it would on my computer or G1. but when i pull up the browser it just goes to a "web page not available" for anything i type in. it wont automatically redirct me like both my laptop and G1 do. i even tried typing in the adress it pulls up on my computer when it loads the log in screen, but still shows me "web page not available" Does the G1 and G2 use the same browser? and if so why doesnt it redirect me? what else could cause this problem or fix it please?
with the new OTA update for wifi calling and sms messages you can see why i would love to have this issure fixed. also if i go to a free wifi area (such as a recreational center, where there is no log in neccessary, just connect and go) i have no problem connecting with my G2. so i know the wifi works with it. it just wont seem to redirect my to the log in page or allow it to come up.
firstly: thanks for what you do for our country.
try a different browser. i recommend dolphin HD
thank you!
hmm ok, ill try looking for that tomorrow. can be found in market?
Yes, it is in the market
Wow, they have WiFi at Balad now? Man, when I was there 3 years ago we had to wait in line for a computer! As the others have said, try using a different browser. I'm always switching between the default and Opera depending on what page I'm trying to access.
Oh yeah, if it's anything like Google Voice, the new update may not work for WiFi calling, depending on what country the IP address you snag is registered to. I had Google Voice on my G1, and as soon as I went to Europe and tried to use it on a WiFi hotspot, I got a message saying that Google Voice was not usable in the country I was in.
Stay safe and don't eat too much Taco Bell or Burger King!
haha ya, but its a HUGE rip off. way expensive and slow as can be. but its really our only option to get interent in dorm so im a sucker and bought it.
and for the goodle voice, hmmm i have it on my laptop and it works with this internet. dont know if it will be different with G2 but we shall see.
I tried Dolphine HD and Opera and still having the same issue. it only ever pulls up "web page cannot be displayed" The Internet guys out here said it was my browser. i confirmed with tmo that the browser is the same for the G1 and the G2. yet it works with G1 and not G2. and still wont work with any of the new browsers. Im stuck and this blows!!!
Ok first off this is my first post so don't go flaming me. I have searched the site thoroughly although maybe I am not entering the correct keywords to return a valid result. I have had my galaxy nexus since launch and am glad I migrated from iOS to an android phone.
That being said everything works flawlessly for my needs I'm on the VZW phone unrooted no firmware modifications, the phone is almost stock with the exception of like 3 apps I have downloaded and the ICS update that was pushed to my phone immediately after turning it on.
One of my primary uses with my smartphone is accessing a website for school where I can view grades, scheduling, add and drop classes etc..
The browser on 3g, 4g, Wifi works flawlessly going to any website either through a search engine or via manually entering the URL. However the school website is unaccessible through the browser on this phone and it is the only page I can not get to. I have checked via other smart phones, desktops and other devices concurrently while using the nexus and am able to validate the site is up and available.
If I do a google search for it, go the the parent university site and use hyperlink or manually enter the URL I get web page not found - network error. I was thinking at first that it was an https problem but I am able to visit other secure sites without any problem. I also tried the option to goto to a non-mobile version of the site without success as well.
here is the web address
EDIT: apparently I can't post a link but you can navigate by doing a google search for UM-Dearborn Connect it should be the first result returned
So my question is what gives? Is there some type of a credential issue with my browser and this site? an incompatability with the new OS and this site I just don't understand why only this site I am unable to access.
If another galaxy nexus user could try to access this site and give feedback it would be greatly appreciated.
Try using Opera Mobile or Firefox. Both can be downloaded from the market. I will try to get to the site now.

Edit: I get the same network error message as you when trying to connect in the stock browser. Opera Mobile seems to work fine. I had a similar problem with a University site on the Gingerbread browser on my last phone. The beauty of Android is that there is a solution to nearly any issue you come across.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I get the same problem when looking at Newegg Promotions that I get in my email. It's really weird. I get the same problem on my Transformer as well.
Occurs on EDGE/3G/4G and WiFi.
Maxthon
You may also want to give the Maxthon browser a go. I use it over the stock browser and it always works well.
Thanks for the verification on your phones guys, I thought I was going crazy and wasn't sure if I should try a factory reset.
While using another browser may be an alternative my inherent inner geek is not satisfied with resorting to an alternative option.
I'm going to try and get to the bottom of this. If I get any updates I'll post to this thread.
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knows if this is possible. The company I work for has free wifi, and I connect to it with my Galaxy Nexus LTE. However, every time, I have go to my browser, and click on the "Proceed" button to connect. My login credentials are already in there by default. I was wondering if there is a way where I don't have to click on proceed. It's a minor thing, but I am just curious if there is a way, that the Galaxy Nexus could connect automatically. I am using ICS Browser.
Some help would be nice

I know this thread is old, but I have a similar question. I have some java coding experience but haven't ever made an android app.
Anyways, the place I work at just revamped the wireless network, and now we have to login to the network via a splash screen everyday. Very annoying, considering when I pull into the parking lot I auto connect to the network.
My goal is to write an app that will look for the network (say once every 15 minutes) and make sure it can get out (ie make sure the google page appears) if not it will go the url of the spash screen and login you in.
I dont know if all networks using a captive portals are setup the same, but this one allows you to connect without anything, but won't allow data to travel until you login. And also doesn't present the splash screen to login until you open a browser.
Any help would be great. I'm not looking for someone to write this, only a point in the right direction. Thanks
When using public wifi the 'Network login' page appears and I sign it as normal. For 99% of sites this works great and it remembers my login details from site to site.
However on Cisco web portals it doesn't remember the details. My old HTC would remember but it used Chrome for the Network login, the Nexus isn't using Chrome as such so I've no control over this.
I've search around and found a few other people with the same issue, I'm wondering it its a Android 6 bug / feature ? Does anyone know a fix ? Thanks
