While I have no interest in purchasing the N4 as of yet, I was wondering though how good will the GNexus be at retaining it's value in the coming months or perhaps over till next fall when the next phone comes out? I figure that it be somewhat good since it is a Nexus and all but I think my phone is locked to the network (Rogers in Canada). So I guess I am asking is if I were to wait to sell my Nexus would I still get relatively the same amount of money for it if I were to sell it now?

not sure anyone really can predict the future of demand for this phone. I'd assume it will depreciate at the same rate as most android phones.
It seems that the CDMA phones (Verizon, sprint) may fetch a little more than the gsm's for a little while since there is not an N4 with CDMA listed yet.
Its still a good phone and it would be able to use sprints new LTE network. So its a current phone in that regard.

I think you're spot on. The CDMA versions will hold their value slightly better because they're the only AOSP supported devices on those networks. The sheer size of Verizon's network will help further that along.
I also think it will hold value because it should be easily able to support android 5.0 whenever it's released.
maybe in the future the CDMA ones will hold value but as of right now, the unlocked GSMs are fetching $100 more than CDMA versions on Ebay.
Not at all. Considering that the Gnex was just $350 a few weeks ago before it got pulled, and replaced with a Nexus 4 which is a much better handset by a boatload for the same price... if I was in the market for a Gnex I wouldn't pay anything more than $150-$200 for one. And at that point logic kicks and tells me to just drop the extra $150 for the Nexus 4. Like the user said above, maybe the CDMA versions will retain a higher value since the Nexus 4 won't be available for CDMA networks. My 2 cents.

cdma versions will always be the ugly versions of this phone, locked into sprint or verizon, and only have any value in a lte market. If you are on those carriers you will just use your upgrade to get a newer phone. (wrong section, belongs in Q&A)
Agreed, CDMA is a downside for resale value.
I'll probably sell my Galaxy Nexus for 100-150 bucks next year when I get the "Nexus 5". I'm skipping the Nexus 4.

I'd say this price range will hold for quite some time. It'll level off and stay around $100-150.
I'm skipping the Nexus 4 as I skipped Modern Warfare 3. Both flops. I believe this phone will hold its resale value fairly well because not a lot of people are happy with the LGnex.

IMO, I think the N4 will be a hit.

i dont think youll get the same amount of money than right now... obviously the cause the device gets older and new phones start coming out. i just sold my galaxy nexus for $300 to upgrade to the n4.... but i'm sure galaxy nexus will hold its price at around 150-200 mark for quite some time, just like how the galaxy2 is holding its price
I think the Gnex will hold it's price for like 6 months or so, as there are people who would prefer the Gnex over the N4, especially at a $100-150 savings.
I wouldn't expect to get the same sorta price as the N4 though, even the 8gb one at $300. It'd have to be 50 bucks less or maybe a little more even.

I dont think the N4 could ever be a flop. The Nexus 7 has already been one of the most commercially successful Android tablets yet. The relatively low price has to be a big factor in that. With the same pricing strategy for the Nexus 4 I think it will atttract the same level of attention as the Nexus 7. Well done Google.
Actually its surprising how many people who've seen my GNex and asked what it is have said they'd never even heard of the Nexus line. I think that will end with the Nexus 4.

i totally agree with you... a lot of my friends have never heard of the nexus line... its just not mainstream. I think with google's competitive pricing with the nexus4 is a game changer. With the price being the same as the current galaxy nexus... WHY wouldnt you upgrade? the specs is better in almost every category... and the most you'd lose is about $100 if you bought the phone for $350. Galaxy nexus is a good phone, but it could only get better from here.

You're quite lucky if you live in the US as you could take advantage of the cheap price, if you're from US you should buy it, it's a steal otherwise you would be paying almost double for the nexus 4 on some other countries.

I want to say one last thing in this thread.
If you want to make good money off selling your old Nexus phone, forget it. Google has changed the market expectations for these handsets and you will not be keeping a lot of value with the price being so low as a brand new device.

For real. If Verizon gets this exclusively that'll be garbage.
Great, another outlet to throw away our privacy and give companies more of our information to use and sell, for the convenience of being quickly informed of when we can give them more of our money...

I am using a damn Samsung gravity. I sold my sensation for this crap. I am going to get amaze.
I just saw that. YOu know what? F*** google. They claim that they intend to do things differently, but then at the end of the day they sell out to the highest bidder.
I was a serious google fan, but the edges are starting to crack and it is slowly dawning on me that the innovative, fast moving company of the early 2000's is becoming a weighed down hegemony of bean counting MBA's who are starting to only get it right when they get lucky.
Exclusive on the most expensive carrier in the USA. The same carrier that replaced their search engine with Bing on 1/3 of their Android lineup. Not a word of it breathed at their week-late press conference. My own fault for getting my hopes up, I suppose.
I am due for a new phone around December/January and this will afford me the opportunity to take a good long look at what Windows phone has to offer before the Galaxy Nexus is even available to me.

Don't feel bad. Just remember one thing. Google is a business company. They don't care about me and you. They support whoever pay more. I am going to get SGS2 or HTC Amaze. I don't have a choice and can't wait longer than the end of nov which is my upgrade time.
i used to be with Tmo but had to switch cause i got stationed in Montana, and now im kinda glad i did, even though I loved the big T
If tmobile is going to get it, they will mention this at the event on Friday. we will see.
Relax. I highly doubt its anything more than a timed exclusive. Both the nexus one and nexus s were only on one carrier originally.
And yes, if you were planning on getting the international one, i'm pretty sure it will still work on AT&T or T-Mo as long as the bands match up.
Well if they're pentaband then you could just buy the world phone model at full price and go. I think it only affects those looking to pick it up on a contract.
It is weird Verizon having a Nexus. Seem to clash together but my work has Verizon so why pay for a personal line?
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
Bet you when they are referring to the 'exclusive' Galaxy Nexus they are only talking about the LTE model and all the others will get the pentaband one at pretty much the same time.
Just had a thought... I know it doesn't say it, but... maybe it word play. I mean they will be the exclusive carrier of the LTE version, but remember there's too versions. Hhhuuummmm

I'm not gonna act like I'm not disappointed they have exclusively, especially since the other Nexus phones started as exclusive to one carrier as well. I wish they would just drop the whole exclusivity thing and make it available to everyone day one as exclusivity only really hurts the consumer. No way I'm switching to Verizon for this phone. I'll either import or wait for the GSM version to hit the US (if it's not that long of a wait). It's really bad for the phone's sales too considering in the world of smartphones, the next big release is always right around the corner and you will lose a lot of potential customers who will get something else because they don't feel like waiting anymore or something else hits the market. The average consumer doesn't know care about the Nexus brand, they care about new and noteworthy so why not try to rope them in while the iron is hot?

This, other than screen choices Hardware wasn't a big deal breaker for me. I want the AOSP feel. I came for a Samsung Infuse 4g. I was tired of waiting around for development. When I was shopping for a new phone I checked out phones the the AT&T GSII, Skyrocket, ect. Sure they had some development, but not too much. So instead of getting another phone where I'd be at the mercy of Samsung and AT&T to get Rom updates. So I made the best decision ever for a phone. I bought me a Galaxy Nexus. Now I don't think I will ever not own a Nexus series phone.
Since you stated you already have a Nexus S, I bet it will be hard for you to got to anything else that will be locked down and skinned. You will probably have withdraws pretty quickly.
In short, unless you are all about the latest and greatest hardware then get a GN, or wait a year for the next Nexus phone.
Yeah I remember when I had a Nexus One and left it for a HTC Sense Device. I mean the Hero and Evo had a lot of development but its nothing like having international users which means more development than just people who have ATT or sprint etc.

You can't compare the device available now to future technology. LOL.
Future phones are always better, at least in terms of specs, so there's no end to the wait. Also, you could never have THE best phone.
PS. If you love the Nexus family then you will love GNex.
I don't mean to intrude on this topic but I am also wondering the same thing, except I'm coming from a Samsung vibrant and I can't seem to choose whether I want to get the Verizon nexus or buy a GSM nexus. It really depends on you and your lifestyle. Like do you travel abroad a lot or do do you hate Verizon (lol)?
If you are in the country most of the time then I don't see why you would go through the trouble of getting an unlocked GSM GNex. They are essentially the same when it comes to end user experience.

What device you get really depends on what you want. With the Galaxy Nexus the hardware might not be as good as other devices, it is miles ahead as far a software goes considering the open nature and dev support. If you don't plan on taking advantage of that and are more concerned with hardware, then get something else. I was tempted by the hardware and went to the G2x and then the GS2, I came back to the Nexus line. I missed the customization I had with my G1 and Nexus One.
While the Galaxy Nexus may be a little behind as far a hardware, but is by no means poor. But with the open software and available drivers, the software is way ahead of other phones.
well lets see the reason I'm debating about the two is this:
Verizon Nexus:
Pros: Service overall in Los Angeles is better. True LTE speeds. And 32gb built in versus the 16gb GSM version. Can get it for $100 on amazon.
Cons: stuck with Verizon and no chance of getting service outside of the US. Monthly bill would be $50 more expensive. And the whole android support issue about source?
GSM NEXUS:
Pros: can use on my $45 T-Mobile plan with 2gbs of data or switch to any GSM carrier I want. Development seems to not be stunted. Never had a problem with service.
CONS: $500 and no local hardware support in case of a problem. 16gb versus the 32gb version.
Lol I can't choose.

So if it costs $50 a month more on Verizon, with a minimum of 24 months is $1200, or $400 more once for the GSM. Not too tough a decision, though the 32GB would be nice.

I would say go with verizon, cause if anything does happen to the phone you'll be covered. The service is great waaaaay better than T-mobile, yea the bill will be a lil higher but you get what you pay for, dependable service. The thing about the support issue is irrelevant, the Nexus(GSM or CDMA) will still be waaaay ahead of any other phone and will continue to get updates rather is be OTA or here at XDA(the dev support on here don't seem like it will die down anytime soon, so you have nothing to worry about with this phone)
If I could go back 3-4 months (or whatever it was) I wouldn't buy a Gnex today. I'm a little disappointed in the lack of fixes from google. We've been officially on 4.0.2 for almost the whole time, while they seem to cater to carrier phones more (verizon gnex).
I see no point in getting a nexus if google puts their phone 2nd to carrier demands. verizon gnex gets fixes and more attention. At this point there are newer and better phones coming out, and the appeal of getting ICS first is over, especially when google doesn't release updates.
It's not like the GS3 won't see CM and a plethora of AOSP roms. How many non aosp roms do we have?
I'd wait for the gs3 at this stage of the game. They are talking about a simultaneous world wide release.
Verizon is about the same as sprint price wise. Assuming you aren't stupid enough to pay $20 for testing when you already pay for data. Use Google voice for texting and grove IP to stretch out your minutes. Add a corporate discount and it might be cheaper.
TMobile is a true value carrier but their service can get pretty ****ty.
It don't matter what phone you get.. You only going to be king of your neighborhood/office for only a couple of months.. Then the next big thing is coming.. Hell people already talking about a Galaxy Nexus 2. Thats the thing that sucks about android.. its never one good phone..
You can: Get a VZW Nexus on contract for 2 years and be stuck.. and then have to pay full retail for the next big thing. (Which already seem like the HTC One and GS3) BUT! No one knows if VZW is going to get the Galaxy Nexus 2. or any HTC One device or even a GS3.. And even when the GS3 come out you wont be able to get it on a carrier to probly 3 months after international release
Or you can: Get the GSM Nexus and always sell it in the next few weeks or month (Since the Galaxy Nexus resell value is about $450-$600 on ebay for a used one)
Plus you can get a Pre-paid carrier like Tmo as the other user said n have ****ty service... or just use ATT or rogers w/e you use and save yourself the upgrade fees and signing a new contract

I think OP should wait for a quad core phone with an updated gpu. it'll way more feature-proof than galaxy nexus.

So after a year on Windows Phone 7.5 I've decided to return to Android but I'm not sure which phone to get. I know the S3 is the top of the line phone right now but getting it would involve extending my Tmobile contract. I saw that google recently dropped the price of the Galaxy Nexus to $350 which is quite an attractive no contract price.
Which should I go for? The most important thing for me is battery life with performance a close second.
Outside of the 1GB of RAM I don't see much of a difference between the two. Help?

You'll have to wait a week if you want the GNex, since Apple banned it from being sold in the US.
But yeah, my vote would be the Nexus

Get the nexus for $350, a cheap Sim only deal (if you can get them in your country) and see what grabs your fancy on contract in 6-12 months time. By then you can probably sell the nexus for a few quid/dollars/euros/potatoes anyway and use the cash for a high end phone on contract.

I doubt Samsung will be so fast in releasing the kernel/source or even thinking about putting out an update for that phone. They would have moved on to the next best thing.

I know I'm kinda late but I'll be getting a new phone soon..probably a Gnex since its Google's baby and it'll be constantly updated. The thing is, should I just wait 'cause there are rumours saying there will be 5 Nexus' (or Nexi) around the corner or get this? A bit worried about the performance and battery of this since I'll be using it quite heavily :-\

If you put off decisions on the hope of getting the latest you will never buy a thing or will pay top dollar for something that is replaced in 3 months. At $349 in the Google store there is not much to think about.
The next Nexus will probably be released this year, but it probably be expensive. Like 800bucks unlocked expensive. If you are willing to pay that much, just wait. If you don't care about specs and just want a really nice phone or don't have 800bucks on you, Galaxy Nexus GSM for 350bucks is a no brainer.
I got mine last month, never enjoyed a phone this much before. The price was what swayed me since t mobile wanted s much for an upgrade it was silly. I use the phone a bit less than heavily and my battery lasts all day but I have a small external battery just in case. The camera is much better than I expected and compared to my sisters GS3 the phone feels solid and performs as well as her does.
Get GNexus now, use it for a few months and by then, the next Nexus price should be a little easier to deal with.
Get it.

Lol why would it be 800 Google doesn't care about making profits that much on mobile devices or will probably be max of 400 or 450

Huh and is that why Gnex costed 800bucks fully unlocked when it first came out? Google might not want the money, but Samsung (or whatever manufacturer that makes the next Nexus) will definitely want it.
exactly just get it. and live contract free for awhile. and u will never go back to contracts.. so enjoy paying 30 bucks a month. sure i lose alittle. but for me its worth it.. plus give me the extra cash to save up for another new phone down the road or a nexus 7 tab. etc...
@kyokeun1234:
The reason why the GNex cost so much when it came out is because it was not available in Canada/USA for a few months. The hefty price tag (I paid $720 for mine) was due to the fact that it had to be imported by electronics retailers and sold as a grey market item. When the unlocked GSM version became available through the Google PLay Store, it cost $399.

yes but that was after a few months. And I do agree with you the next nexus not being 800 bucks but it will still be expensive. Like 600 to 700 possibly

I say get it, especially if the price is right. The s3? Meh...it's a nice phone, but the gnex is where the party is...

The GN never cost 800 USD. Not sure where you got that number from. The reason the GN wasn't sold by Google originally is they didn't have their Play Store system in place. I would be shocked if they don't sell the next Nexus device(s) at $500 or less.
Get the Gnex. You won't be disappointed.

Same with the others. You won't be disappointed. I bought a One X and being tied to carrier regulations is purely insane. Getting updates fast is really awesome too. Just do it. At $349 you can't go wrong with an unlocked phone.
DO IT.

The rule in buying technology says "you should buy what you need right now". That's because you won't buy a thing if you are thinking what is coming up. Always something comes up in technology.
Galaxy Nexus is a beauty!
So buy it..

I just ordered mine. I switched from Sprint to Walmart's Family Mobile (basically T-Mobile subsidized by Walmart) and with the money I'm saving, the phone is paid for in 1 year. Phone cost $385 with shipping and tax, but I'm saving nearly $35 a month and get unlimited everything vs unlimited text, data, and 1000 voice minutes. Oh...and I get a signal at home now. LOL
Now if I sell my Evo 3D, that closes the gap even more.
This cool story brought to you by a bro...

This phone is definitely worth it, as it's a Nexus phone, it'll be in the loop for years to come.
Hey guys, mainly asking for your opinions so just let them fly.
I currently have a Thunderbolt and my contract is up at the end of November now I am trying to decide what to do next. I was fully anticipating going with the nexus 4 (I was prepared to never buy a non nexus device as long as Google keeps making them). Now that the nexus 4 will not be on Verizon and switching to at&t isn't an option since I get 25% off my bill through work, what would you guys do if you were in my situation? The Gnex is going to be cheap as hell when am eligible for an upgrade and am still considering it, should I be? Do you think Gnex development will slow down dramatically any time soon? I'd also hate to buy a phone with outdated hardware...do you guys run into hardware limitations withe the Gnex?
The only other phone that intrigues me is the galaxy s3. Mainly because it is so popular that I see there being a huge development opportunity there? I looked through the thread for the GS3 and it looks like there plenty of aosp roms and it looks to me like there will be quick updates for it as well. The biggest things I hate about the GS3 are the hardware buttons, I love the customisable soft keys in aosp and think that hard keys are so pointless anymore.
I'm pretty much against moto but if you really think I should look at something they have to offer, let me know.
Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated, thanks in advance.

My advice? Wait and watch. See how the N4 actually pans out as a device itself. It could be a hardware flop for all we know at this point. There were certainly fun hardware issues with the Gnex.
Then wait a bit longer for the HTC DNA. It might turn out to be a barnburner, or something to burn the barn with.
Then make a decision.
I'm not sure if the Moto RAZR i or HD is a good option or not for you.
Its up on you dude. go out & explore something new and one more thing that the GS3 is a pretty good option.

I would wait if I where u. If u really need a new phone I would say the galaxy as 3 is a good choice. I have the gnex with Verizon and I love it. I dont have no issues at all my signal is always good i dont drop any calls or never go into 3g lol. (Must be my area i live in) Only problem I see u having is the storage capacity. The gnex on Verizon is now offered with only 16GB. No more 32GB. But as stated before, wait it out a few more months and see what's around the corner. If anything get a used nexus from craigslist for like 250 bucks to hold u over. That way up don't waist your upgrade on a phone u might regret

25% off of Verizon's prices is still more expensive then Straight Talk or T-Mobile prepaid.... why not get a Nexus 4 anyway and stop signing contracts?

The answer for most people? Coverage.
Coverage, Coverage, Coverage.
If you have a Thunderbolt, that means you still have unlimited data right? So if you're planning on buying a Nexus anyway, you might as well just find an unlocked one (i've seen used ones for ~$150-250) so that you won't have to upgrade. If I remember correctly (and I might be wrong), but Verizon only takes away the unlimited data when you try to upgrade.
No offense, but then he'd be stuck with T-Mobile's network and current lack of LTE. I root for T-Mobile; however, I was miserable when I was using them in suburban Denver, due to relatively inconsistent/slow data.

You can use AT&T's towers via Straight Talk if T-Mobile isn't great for your area. AT&T's HSPA+ network is pretty expansive.
Also, he wouldn't be "stuck" with anything - he could take the SIM card out and flush it down the toilet if the service bothers him. That's the beauty of not having a contract
I had the gnex on Verizon and loved it, except for one crucial issue-battery life. Sure, this was remedied somewhat by getting spare batteries, but this got to be a pain in the ass.
I currently have the Verizon SIII and love it (I find the dev community to be more than adequate). Yet I agree that it is worth waiting for the inevitable next greatest thing. The DNA does look to be badass

Yeah the main reason why I stay with Verizon is coverage and my discount. At&t is the only other viable option, all the others are spotty at best around where I live.
Yeah I never thought of trying to get a gnex off contract. That would probly be the best option seeing that I'm getting married in June and will most likely have to revamp my plan for me and the wife anyway.
My friend just got the s3, he doesn't root or anything like I do but I can still bug him about the battery life at least.

I've only ever dealt with Verizon so can you include a few more details? Isn't straight talk sprint, but you're saying at&t sim?

The only way I'll be buying a Nexus 4 is if it's gifted to me.
I honestly want to wait it out for MWC and HTC's 2013 lineup.

I'm not real big on the next best thing, the S3 would be in that category for me. Do you stick with touchwiz ROMs or aosp (or aokp)?
I have a sour taste in my mouth for HTC and I'm sick of waiting. I thought I waited for the next best thing with the Tbolt when I was coming from the OG droid. Samsung at least gets it right with their flagship devices. They don't come out with almost an identical phone but with more bugs worked out 3 months later.
I'll wait till Christmas and see what all comes but that's as long as I'll wait.

Straight talk offers an AT&T SIM that gives you unlimited* everything for $45/mo. I think it's actually their most popular plan.
*2-5gb of data before they start to nag, depending on how the stars align for you. Since, you know, unlimited is never actually unlimited in the US anymore...
If you are only with verizon because of the discount, try calling up another phone company and see if they can match the offer or sweeten the pot for you. My brother gets a corporate discount with Bell (here in Canada) and so he called up Rogers (who he's with), and told them that he can get such and such plan for such and such price and asked if he can match it otherwise he'd switch. I forget the specifics of what he got but he was able to get a discount because of it.
Otherwise, just wait like many others said. Perhaps you can get a sweeter phone than the nexus.

don't be annoying like that
To OP: I'm in a similar situation actually, except that I use a GNex right now instead of a TurdBolt. Nobody knows if a Nexus 4 will come to VZN, but I'd probably just buy a GNex until something better rolls around later. And if you do have unlimited data, DO NOT UPGRADE! I cannot fathom losing my unlimited data at this point of my spoiled-data-consumption life. And the development for the VZN GNex is pretty healthy actually. Nothing to complain about, especially when you know you have a reliable connection at the end of the day.
I'm in agreement there, I dumped my tbolt for a gnex and it was a huge step up. You can grab one for fairly cheap off contract now too. I have little to complain about besides battery being a moderate problem. It still beats the tbolt for battery life by quite a bit though, and has given me better data reception. My main urge to upgrade is called 'upgraditis'. For now I'll be trying to treat the symptoms.
