Is there a way to force specific apps (like YouTube) into tablet mode without making the whole os tablet mode? Using aokp and would rather not switch. Ahh other ways?
Thanks!
Paranoid Android is able to achieve it but since you prefer not to switch ROMs, no other way.
How about Ultimate Rotation Control

Thanks for the suggestion. It's not quite what I was looking for. Certain apps like the YouTube one looks completely different in a tablet.

Hi,
since ICS is now for phones and tablets, I was wondering if it would be possible to trick the system (pixel density?) to use the tablet UI on the Galaxy Nexus.
Despite the GN having a tablet-like resolution, it would be unusable out of the box. But hooked to a big screen (TV/monitor) and with a mouse+keyboard, it could be interesting.
What do you think?

This is definitely possible with a custom rom. I don't think you'll have any chance unless you root though.

Pixel density is usually modified in the /system/build.prop file which is read only to non-root users. Once you have root access, the pixel density can be modified via root access.
If you don't want to load root access, at least have to oem unlock, but you can also modify this file through a custom recovery as most custom recovery's allow adb to use root access by default.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the replies!
I was aware about root (not really a problem on GN), but do you think such a tweak, integrated into a mod like CM9, could be done without flashing, or even rebooting? Think about an "tablet mode" which could be launched on the go. Maybe even automatically when plugged with HDMI?

Although I don't know about having a CM9 mod style thing, you might be interested in the LCD Density app. It lets you change the density on the fly, without rebooting

Nice! Did anybody tried on Galaxy Nexus? Haven't mine yet.
I've tried setting my pixel density to 190 but after a reboot all I get is a constant launcher and system.UI FC dialogs.
Edit: I've tried again at 220 and no longer get FC from system.UI(so get navigation buttons and status bar) but they look the same. The stock launcher still FC's but with a different launcher the device seems fully functional with all the stock apps scaling fine.
200 also works and seems to be the smallest I can go.
Thanks! So it seems that changing pixel density isn't sufficient to make the GN detected as a Tablet by ICS, so bad...
Hey guys.
Have anyone found a way to change only one specific app (youtube and Gmail) to be put into tab mode????
I've searched everywhere and there isn't tool that allows this. There is a tool built into Paranoid Android that uses CM9 with a built in DPI app changer, but I don't want to flash a different Rom.
I want to keep my AOKP Milestone 5 on a Sense Theme I've installed.
Thanks in advanced for helping.
If you don't want to flash paranoid android you won't have this option.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
Well I can change the LCD Density on my AOKP Rom, but it would turn my entire phone into a Tab, making it useless.
So there is no way I can change it??? Surprised no one has yet since the Tab apps are better then the phone app.
Example: Camera, Settings, YouTube.

There is no way to do it for one app without paranoid Android

You should highly reconsider flashing paranoid android. The rom. Is absolutely fantastic and the pad settings are exactly what your looking for I swear

I know I've tried it on Thursday. The reason why I went back to AOKP M5 is the Sense theme(it has stuff the Market version wouldn't have), features, and stability.
Also the market had alot of apps claiming they are "not compatible" to my phone.
That specific Rom inspired me to go out and find an app or program that allows the DPI to be changed. App Changer tool is AMAZING!!!
If not I guess I'll be the first to develop an app for android that does this task.
I love tablet mode. I used lcd Density modern provide and the market fixer, and then bam BOOM kalamazoo, and I have had only one problem, and and that was Chrome beta
BOOM.
Before flashing CM10, TouchWiz had a car/driving mode that would cause any notifications to be read aloud. Does such a thing exist in CM10? If not, are there any apk's out there of the Samsung app that provides this functionality? I'd really like something I can turn on/off via NFC Task Launcher or Tasker and this doesn't seem to be possible with the apps I've found in the play store.

This is only in the touchwiz framework, so you would need to use a ROM that is based on the Samsung Original or just use stock.
Yeah, I had kinda figured as much. I ended up using Tasker to get this functionality and it works just as well on TouchWiz or any other AOSP/AOKP rom, whether ICS or JB. In the end I'm happier with this solution as it's more customizable (e.g. I can disable it while there's an active phone call).
Is it possible without needing to install a ROM? What I basically want is the ability to have the dockbar move to the bottom of the screen when I rotate it to landscape instead of staying on the short side like it currently does. I want my dockbar always along the bottom edge of the screen no matter what position I'm holding the tablet. Currently no launchers that I know of allow this as an option. Any ideas that don't involve ROMs?

This should do that until a new mods gets released .
You have to be rooted for this mod to work.
Hope that helps.

I don't think real tablet UI has a dock. And a launcher like apex would give you the option to disable the dock like in larger tablets.
if you want true tablet ui, buy an iPad mini
What exactly do you mean with real tablet UI - the failed UI experiment from google in the past?
The N7 has the current tablet UI.

The current N7 uses the phablet ui. He means the honeycomb like ui. Whether you consider it failed or not does not matter some (me included) prefer it.

I prefer that tablet ui too... would love some insight if tablet ui is possible at all in a CarbonRom.
I like the Honeycomb look better as well. My biggest issue is that all of the apps from the play store are downloaded as the phone version, not the tablet version. I bought a tablet to have tablet apps, not phone apps - I don't care that the screen is only 7".
Honeycomb ui works fine for a tablet all operations takes place below the screen. Unlike this new ui were you always have to reach the notification area
Most other android tablets ( like galaxy tab, acers and others) Have the tabletUI (honeycomb or whatever the hell you wanna call it)
Why? Because with the way you hold your tablet, its way easier to hit the buttons and swipe where you need to with that setup.
At least it would be nice to have the option to change it.
I use guest profiles and what not so i cannot use the method posted above
Hopefully we will get tablet UI on stock somehow working good....
hmm... the older I get, the lazier i get to mess with roms
I would install ParanoidAndroid if I were to flaSH....

Also a lot of wasted screen real estate on the N7 between the forced search bar and top & bottom bar.

You can flash pa and get the tablet look but that doesn't mean you're gonna get the tablet apps - that's what I'm wanting.

Email the devs of the apps you buy and state your want to get a tablet version. easy peezy.
Revieww apps on the play store, state your opinion.
When people don't buy apps that devs spent lots of effort on, its discouraging.

It's nothing to do with the devs. It's the way the play store sees the nexus 7. USA today has a tablet version of their app. Directv has a tablet version. On the galaxy tab 8.9 for instance, I could get those. Maybe it's something to do with build.prop?

OOoohhh I see I'm so sorry I misunderstood.
I saw that the USA app though says its for both phones and tablets. the direcTV one though , says not compatible with my device... of course we can always download the APK from somewhere but i think this calls for a petition to google to make sure we are getting the maximum experience on our devices.
the Wallet app I can understand, with the security thing and whatever but this? this is recidulous. and Now that You've mentioned it, I actally had a few apps on my nexus 10 which i cannot install on my nexus 7 (tablet apps)
weird right?

You DO get tablet apps if you want. Changes in DPI determine app layout. PA lets you choose DPI on an app to app basis without trashing your market. Meaning modifications to build.prop are broad and make your market think you are a tablet which for some apps is bad, so they don't do that.

In most cases yes. However (for whatever reason) some companies/developers choose to publish two separate apps to the Play Store - one for phones and one for tablets, and unless your device is identified as a tablet the tablet version of the app is marked as incompatible (and the phone version doesn't include the tablet layout so it isn't available by dpi/layout changes).
Again, however, this is something that the app devs should be sorting - provide one apk that contains all layouts and the problem is solved (because then you can use PA or whatever to use whichever layout you like).

Hi guys,
I am running PA 4.3 now on my N4 and coming from 3.99 I am missing the option to run apps (especially games) in full screen mode with pie enabled.
For some games in PA 4.3 e.g. Hill Climb Racer it is automatically set to full screen/PIE mode.
So there must be an option or a list or something where you can add those apps to start in fullscreen mode, right?
If that option still exists I can't seem to find it Can anyone help me out please?
Thank you very much in advance
Hybrid engine is not yet implemented
Alright, thank you for your answer!
I thought hybrid engine basically was to run apps in tablet-like mode? Like the settings menu in PA 3.99 for instance, which was quite useful but has not been implemented yet, I know..
Running apps in full screen or immersive mode is something else I think..!?
However, if it has not been implemented yet, that's fine. But I find it rather confusing that some apps automatically start full screen and am I asking myself how that is possible!? Or how I can do for some other apps.
I probably will have to wait anyway until the PA-team announces it.. just really missing that feature
cheers

Hybrid was more than just tablet UI.
It has not been finished for 4.x yet.
As for the apps that automatically launch in FullScreen mode, it is the app itself calling it, not the ROM controlling it.
