Does anyone know which device has a better battery life? I'm having hard like deciding which one to buy and I care about battery life the most in a phone. So if anyone knows please reply!
After owning them, I can say Note 2 has, say 15-20% better battery backup than iPhone 5.

I can't speak to the iphone 5, but the Galaxy Note 2 is by far the best battery life mobile device I have ever used.
Unplugged when I wake up around 730-8am, Pandora in the shower and while I get dressed, gps/google maps/pandora on the way to work, web browsing, downloading, some games during the day, pandora and sometimes gps at lunch, browsing, downloading in the afternoon, gps, google maps and pandora on the way home, it's always above 50% when I get home around 6-7pm. Just as a test I left Pandora running when I got home once and didn't plug it in, by midnight I still had 20%+ battery left.
This thing is a BEAST on battery life. I cannot imagine the iphone 5 with much smaller battery being better.... possible maybe, but not likely.

Note2 has the best battery life among all the smart phones I have used so far. Best by a mile.

My guess is that GPS is needed when outside to ensure that phone is trackable in case it is lost/stolen.
For smartphones, Note 2 battery life is only second to RAZR MAXX, which has a 3300mah battery and a smaller screen.

iOS is much lighter and well optimized than Android, so it doesn't actually mean 1450 mAh battery of iPhone 5 will give a bad backup or something.

In Iphone is you get is an app drawer. There are no home screen, widgets, and the dozens of other features available in android. In an Iphone, when you put an app in the background, it pauses the app, as opposed to android, which keep the app running in the background. Does that make it lighter than android? Sure, but I don't know if I'd call crippled functionality and giving users the bare minimum as "optimized", but whatever floats your boat.
Works about as long, if not longer than my G1 with extended battery.
with moderate use the battery runs to 75-80% Leaving it on all night I barely lost any battery. It was ready for day 2.
After heavy use it was at 50% by midnight(from 9am)
It's all to do with individual usage. Different hardware and different operating systems make it impossible to compare.
Surely iOS vs Android would be more of a deciding factor?

True but on the other hand you don't need battery monitoring cpu apps like andeoid which can cause problems from pos apps thats cause wakelocks like ebay etc.one thing I like about iPhone is the single push notification service which runs which handles all push traffic and doesn't rely on phone having multiple data connections open to random foreign servers, google should do something similar.. There are some good points of iPhone that google should steal as apple does itself, PNS is one of them. But I'm not going to turn this into an apple debate.
Those with note 2, with heavy usage did u ever have to charge it twice a day? Heavy usage as in watching lots of YouTube videos, browsing the web, texting, using a bit of GPS and such

That's the same reason an Escalade will have a bigger gas tank than a Yaris, even though the latter is "lighter".

I call it "extende" battery because it's 250maH more than the stock, big whoop.
I have maybe 10-15 calls per day. I unplug at 10am and by 4-5PM I am at 14% battery. There is NOTHING running. I even switched to CDMA only from LTE/CDMA and it didn't help much.
Any recommendations? I am about to return it. My HTC Thunderbolt which has the WORST battery life of ANY phone lasts me through the day and that's with Facebook and other notification apps.
Wait for 4.03 and see if that helps. Otherwise, turn down screen brightness, turn off LTE, and get better reception. Also, charge it every chance you get.

I can't fix any reception issues. This has horrible reception compared to my Thunderbolt as well which itself was bad with reception.
I have it on 3G only and the screen is already turned down.
I mean no disrespect but if the only option is to wait for a "patch" to fix this I probably should return it.
I paid out of contract price for this phone. $649.99 + 8.1% sales tax.
Don't get me wrong. This phone is blazing fast compared to my Thunderbolt but in the end I may just exchange it for an iPhone 4S which has sucky battery life but I can get through 2-3 days on a single charge.
If you even have to think about getting an iPhone, this phone isn't for you.
Seriously, something is probably wrong with your device. I get no reception issues. Sounds like that is the brunt if your issues.

I would say return the 2100mAh battery at least but don't return the phone. LTE is a huge battery hog as is and with the size of this screen it isn't helping either. I'm anxiously awaiting either Mugen or Seidio to make a decent extended battery for it. There is a generic 'made in China' 3800mAh battery currently circulating around eBay pretty cheap, although I haven't tried it out myself yet.
How long have you been using the extended battery? You have to give it at least a week before making any decisions.

You should first compare with the standard battery with the same usage pattern. If the standard battery gives you more time then there's a problem with your extended battery. If the standard battery gives you less time, then the extended battery is okay but you should look at your rom settings instead.

If you're using the phone lightly and losing 85% in 6 hours, then there is a hardware problem. Don't buy into the hype that an OS update is going to fix the problem, it probably won't. I have great battery life on my GN using 4.0.2. I think a lot of people have a hardware defected phone, and are in for a surprise when the OS update launches and doesn't fix the battery issues. The Galaxy S already got 4.0.3, and users are still reporting massive battery drain.
Carry a few batteries or a charger and enjoy.

I have found that the battery life I get with my extended battery is above and beyond anything I would have expected. Use WiFi if it is available for you at work or at home because it's typically faster (unless you have 4G signal and slow wifi) and uses much less power than typical cell radios.

Lol totally a reasonable way to keep your phone functional. Hey, just sew another pocket on your jeans just to hold cellphone batteries, no biggie.
I think battery life varies wildly depending on individual circumstances.
My area has stellar LTE reception, I keep the screen at 30% brightness, and I do light web browsing, RSS viewing, and podcast listening.
With the extended battery, I get anywhere from 9-12 hours before hitting 5% battery. Battery usage typically shows ~50% screen and ~20% Android OS.
Granted, battery life dips significantly when gaming or watching Netflix, which I always do at 100% brightness.

although Nexus S has 4.0.3, the update for Galaxy Nexus will be designed for that specific hardware; thus battery life, performance etc will be completely different.

I have the extended battery, using Roman's ROM and I go to sleep at night with about 25% battery left. I make about 5 calls a day, lasting about 20 minutes each. I surf on the phone a LOT, but am always on wifi when surfing.
I have always found that finding the right ROM with the best battery life (sometimes using different kernals) is a necessity with smartphones.
This is ridiculous. Unplugged for 1 hour and now it's at 44%. Absolutely nothing running. I watched it drop from 46-44%

What is your screen on time? How many apps do you have installed? Are you running stock? Has the phone actually died?
Just because it says its that low doesn't even mean it's that low. Could be an error in reporting. I don't pay much attention to the percent... I go by when my phone actually dies.

Get the iPhone and enjoy the tiny screen and amazingly horrible display. Then enjoy the fact that you can't do anything software related to the iPhone as well. And finally, go wait online for the next iPhone flop like every other fanbois out there and don't bother coming back to visit XDA where people enjoy the most up to date technology and don't waste Thread space by posting more useless threads.

I've become obsessed with the poor battery life on my new Galaxy Nexus and I've been pouring over forums, videos and blogs to find out why it's so bad.
I keep hearing about people getting 8 hours, 11 hours, 14 hours before their phone dies, but this is not actual use time, it's idle time (I.e "I left the phone off the charger overnight and..."). WHY does the manufacturer rate this phone as having a 15 day standby life... FIFTEEN DAYS!!!!
Something is terribly wrong here. If I can't use the browser for more than an hour without the battery getting critical, then what's the point of a "super phone "? It seems useless. I don't even want to install games on this device, because I know I'll get frustrated by it chewing through the battery as I play.
I purchased this phone with a high priority on the HD video recording capabilities, but will I actually be able to film stuff while out and have enough juice in case I need to make a call? Something tells me I won't.
Maybe I'm just expecting too much or maybe manufacturers should stop making these phones so "super" and focus on the fact that these are portable devices which need to last at least the day. God forbid you went for a hike and had an emergency, only to find your phone dead after eight hours!

I have absolutely no complaints about the battery. In fact I would say its the best out of any phone I've owned.

That's because when you pull your phone off the charger and it says it's @100%, it's lying. It's somewhere in between 95-99%. The first 10% is spent figuring out where you're really at.
I think op said it best himself. Maybe you're just expecting too much. Battery life is freaking awesome for a phone with a 4.65 inch oled screen. Reminds me of my trusty nokia e71 back in the day.

If your battery is properly calibrated, the first 5% is iffy. Just figured out how to properly calibrate less than two weeks ago and it doesn't include any software, like batterycalibration or resetting battery stats in cwm.

You can kindly replace "hike" with "family outing", "work", "movies", night club", "sporting event", "errands", etc... having a spare battery or charger (or a second communication device!) on you all the time should NOT be the solution to poor design (either hardware or software or both).

A new Lithium-Ion battery (LiCoO2) is always 100% fully charged at 4.20 V (+- 0.05 V). This maximum voltage lowers with age and use of the cell. Both voltage and battery age can be precisely measured by your phone and translated into the battery % display. It's not a linear graph but it's not really rocket science either.
There is no calibration of LiIon cells, it's neither necessary nor possible, they work at 100% efficiency right from the start.

i'm at 24% after 12.5h, 1:45h screen time (inverted theme browser and some brief facebook/twitter time...). This, to me is not acceptable. If I was using google maps + gps, how long until the battery died? 30 minutes? Less?? I'm not watching video, making calls, downloading torrents, using the camera or anything else that would cause this kind of drain, but it seems to be "normal" for a lot of users on this and other forums.

Have to agree with most and say battery life is by far the best compared to all other Android phones I've owned. As for standby time, this is tested without a sim card, apps, etc. So 15 days sounds reasonable without touching it and without the phone doing anything in the background.

The battery life of this phone is fantastic, more than what I expected. It is better than the Nexus S that I have.
I am using extended battery 2000mAh for GSM version.
Battery drain during night is about 1%-2% for about 8 hours. No kidding, I was surprised with that this morning. Probably because the new 4.0.2. Before, it was half percent an hour.
My current record for battery life was 61 hours with 4 hours screen on time. See the attached screenshot.
Again, this is based on my usage pattern.

Battery life is amazing to me too, My average usage a day at work is 8-9 hours music, 45-60mins 3g web browsing, ~1h 40 mins screen on time.
On my Desire HD (Yea I know, hopeless battery life) the battery would die around 7-8 hours in with that usage. On my Galaxy Nexus I get home with 50% left.
One thing I found that helped battery life out a TON, is swiping facebook off the recent apps menu when you're done with it. Also have a similar high drain problem with joystiq/engadget apps.
Running AKOP17 with francokernel12 for anyone wondering.
I think you need to specify CDMA or GSM. It seems pretty common for GSM to get around 4 hours screen time before the battery goes. CDMA: 2.5 hours or so with moderate-heavy use.
I really hope someone on Verizon will post that they get 4 hours screen on time (no wifi) and what they did to get it.
Battery is good here too. Android OS is the eater. 4.0.3 and a good kernel fixes that.
The phone is capable of good battery but the new OS is still buggy.

Well that's what happens when you let AT&T (and other carriers) have special hooks in your OS to turn WiFi on whenever it wants to without your consent.
It helps, but that's nowhere near the top of reasons why battery life is better on iPhones.

You know damn well that's not true lol. And as I noted above, iPhones are gently "forced" onto WiFi in public places when they're out of the house.
Interesting. I noticed this as well (through watching iPhone users I know personally) but wasn't sure about how broad this trend was.
At the risk of sounding biased, I feel like most iPhone users don't know to use their iPhones to maximum potential. iPhone users are the ones who ask "Is the restaurant open?" while Android users are the ones who actually know. Additionally, in my own experience, I feel that iPhone users have more limited data plans - they're always the ones asking for wifi passwords.
Of course, this is not the case for all users. Both OS are very capable and I definitely know of people on both who actually USE their phones the way they were meant to be used.

Battery life is still just as great off wi-fi. It's a monster honestly.
I could go through 8-9 hours of display time over a course of a day and still have batter left over.

It did get worse with iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S (welcome to cloud syncing LOL), but its still quite a bit better than most Android devices with similar usage patterns.

I agree. The Razr Maxx is a welcome addition to that innovation since they use a monstrous non-removable battery. I am confident non-removable battery will no doubt become standard in Android soon.
One reason why I kind of want an iPhone, but ICS is too much fun.

Just look at all the lower powered devices. It's more of the software itself and the integration between iOS and hardware.
I was getting amazing battery life on my iPhone 3GS also when the Nexus One would last maybe like 1/4 of my iPhone. Nexus One screen was a bit bigger, but still theres no denying it. We can't compare to iOS and iPhone's/iPads when it comes to battery life.

Just look at some of the other Android phones that had 3.5" - 4" screens. They still didn't have great battery life.
The iPhone's screen is small, yes, but its still very bright (high power) and high resolution (just as high PPI). Its really just the end to end software+hardware combination that helps battery life. They put battery life really high on the list because Apple feels (rightly so) that its extremely important to customers.
I just had a generic question for people more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.
I recently just tried the Darkside Kernel with Juggernaut 5. In 5 hrs time my battery dropped only 10%. Which for me is fantastic. I tweeted to TDJ thanking him for the kernel and the improved battery life.
"A friend of mine" I use that term loosely because he's been a real a$$ lately, who is also an iphone user then posts on his twitter.
"its been almost 2 days since I last charged my phone. Still at 66% even with regular use."
How is this possible? Isn't the battery in our phone better than the iphone even running a stock ROM. Is he just over estimating to make himself feel good? Any ideas or responses would be appreciated. Thanks.
This clearly is a YMMV situation. The iPhone has been engineered from top to bottom to be as miserly as possible where power consumption is concerned. Every piece of it has been optimized with power consumption in mind. That said, as ADB junkies we're probably doing much more with our buddy Andy than he is with his iPhone. Our screens are bigger, internals use more power, etc. etc.
My guess is if you took an iPhone with similar specs as our device and ran them thru similar tests you'd probably see similar results.
The iPhone 4s on ios 5 has horrific battery life in stand by. Almost no difference in mah pull with the screen off or on. So I'd say with non stop gaming their about the same. But in the pocket ours last alot longer.

That's what I thought as well. I think he is just trying to be one of those high and mighty iphone users (not all iphone users are like that) that think they are better than everyone else bragging for some reason.
I wasn't comparing what I have to his phone, I was thanking TDJ for improving my battery life on what I have. I just thought his comment was kinda far fetched but had to confirm with people who know more about the subject than I do.
When I had the iPhone 4 forever ago, it regularly lasted 4 to 5 hours a day with LIGHT use. No sync, low brightness. It made me want to throw it out of a window. I left that device and never looked back.

From what I have seen, iPhones have horrible battery life specially with that bug in iOS 5 which Apple said they resolved. However on the other hand iTouches and iPads have great battery life due to the fact that they don't have radios except for the wifi
My girlfriend had to hack the crap out of the SSH in her ipad and remove a bunch of the iPhone damens to get good battery life, because all of the iDevices use the same ios.
My 2nd gen iTouch has iPhone 4s damens and its running ios 4.2.something and has been for years. Kinda weird.
But the ipad gets about a month in stand by with little use.
And the iTouch can get up to 3 if I forget it exists.
All in all, every thing sucks until you hack it.

So I currently have a Vibrant that has CM9 installed and the thing rocks! My battery life is pretty good for moderate to heavy use, and gets me through at least a full work day.
As we all know the Galaxy Nexus GSM is now on sale for $399 straight from google, and I am very tempted to get one. I have read ALL OVER the net that the battery life sucks, I have seen tests done that show it only gets 3 hrs MAX of surf time, gets a decent 8 hrs of talk, and about 6 hrs of video, each tested with a fully charged battery.
SO my question is, is it worth it? Is the battery life as bad as they say? Or will it be better than what I have on my SGS?
Also, how do the picture quality compare to say... and Iphone 4s, etc.

Do you need a 4.6 inch screen or not? If so, you gotta deal with the consequences of powering such a screen.
For what it's worth, I went from Captivate > Nexus S > Galaxy Nexus and I feel as if the battery life were all the same ball park.

True, it does seem I wouldn't see much of a difference either way I go. The bigger screen is nice, plus the HD display, and the better camera and added flash, front facing camera, and the major factor is the PRICE POINT!
That is a perfect price point for this phone, I have that itch!!
Standy by time is great. Better than my old sensation 4g. Which had decent battery life to begin with.
My battery can last more than a full day, with the screen on for 4+ hours with a couple hours of streaming music, email, etc.
I think most of the complaints are from the LTE version, and pre software updates that may have helped.
Compared to my sgs4g I get about the same on stock battery. With a qcell 2050 mAh battery I get about an extra 2 hours give or take.

i never considered the gsm gnex to have bad battery life even on stock
you can get much better battery life with a custom kernel installed. i can get 2 days of what i consider normal use (phone calls, losts of sms, some mms, facebook, twitter, games on the ****ter ... ) using GLaDOS kernel.
as previously mentioned the majority of the battery woes come from the battery sucking lte antennas ... all lte phones have this issue and really require new battery technology imo
I upgraded from SGS running CM7.1 to GSM GNex in November..
With my Galaxy S I rarely went a full day without having to plug it in for a charge.
With my GNex I have never plugged it in for a charge during the day, and usually have 40-50% battery left before bed (2h screen time). SGN rocks!

That's true too. I'll see how long I can go before I have to flash, whether I have to or not, I can't go long without a flash regardless

I have a Vibrant with CM9 and a Galaxy Nexus GSM. I don't have complaints of battery life on either. Both get me through a full day. I definitely get more than 3 hours of web surfing time on the Galaxy Nexus. It's been good enough that I really don't pay attention to battery life.

Almost my exact journey, I just had a different variant of the galaxy s. And I agree with overall battery life being the same. I got the 2000 mah OEM battery and it now outlasts all my previous phones

Battery life for my friend is great and he got a gsm version personally sucks on sprint, camera is better in iPhone 4S for sure since I got both devices but it doesn't take such a bad pictures, is just mm idk for some reason the lense seems to be better on the iPhone 4S so far I'm undecided in which device should I stay with x
In my usage streaming audio seems to use less battery. Other uses use similar juice.
I had a SGS Captivate before with CM9.
