Just wanted to start a thread to see if anyone can think of some interesting places to utilize the Samsung TecTiles. I have thought of a few places, but would be interested in hearing where everyone else uses them.
By the home entrance: Toggle Wi-Fi and brightness
By the bathroom sink/shower: Launch Google Music
Nightstand: Turn on blocking mode
By the toilet: Launch favorite reading/video website
Coffee Table: launch GoogleTV remote
Here's what I thought of...
Car? Turn on GPS, disable Wi-Fi, turn on bluetooth and turn on Music.
Work Desk? Turn on Wi-Fi, disable GPS, turn off/on bluetooth depending on your need and Silent Mode.
Yes, I've seen a lot of people putting the tag inside a car dock.... very cool

Are you asking how to program these TecTiles (or other such things)???
well, yes.
Samsung TecTile (US,Canada only)
is the Samsung app. The 1st version was a bit lacking but they have improved it.
there are a bunch of other apps including these:
NFC TagWriter by NXP
this one you can re-purpose other tags:
NFC ReTAG
NFC Task Launcher
You can find these for around $1 for basic tags at places like tagstand.com or tagsfordroid.com. It just depends how aesthetically pleasing you want them. There are many sites that sell tags with equal or better function for less than Samsung.
Just never heard them called tectiles..

Its just Samsungs official tags...there are some for cheaper, like other people have said but they are not the official ones. Do they work just as good? Probably, but I never really paid any attention to the other ones.

I'm going to put a bunch up everywhere and have Tasker deal with controlling all sorts of things based on my location.
Wifi and BT automatically turn off after set amounts of idle time.
In car, Wifi Off, BT ON
At Desk, Wifi On.
If I put it in the Logitech BT keyboard's cradle (which will house a tag), it will turn on BT.
Maybe put one on my e-bike, to send a sms to my wife to let her know that I'm on my bike, turn on GPS, turn off wifi, turn on BT, etc
I wanted to have one in my car to enable car mode, toggle bluetooth, make sure gps was on, set the volume to the correct level and turn my phone off vibrate.
Unfortunately the nfc tag i have does not have enough memory according to the tectile app, maybe ill try one of the 3rd party apps later.
Amazon $11
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-ETC-T...rammable-Tags/dp/B0089VO7RY/ref=pd_sim_misc_1
10 off name tags for $15. (716k writable)
http://www.amazon.com/Mifare-NFC-Ga...=UTF8&qid=1352320258&sr=8-8&keywords=nfc+tags
Read the review. Seems the off brand ( Mifare ) is very functional.

Is that because you need more code lines for more commands?
I'm thinking about putting all of the "code" in Tasker and have the NFC just activate the code.
What's the consensus on how much more battery you burn keeping NFC on all day?
Not that I have battery problems..just curious.

I've been told it's nothing. I certainly haven't noticed any appreciable battery gobbling.
Especially with the GNoteII, I don't see battery being a huge issue.

Does anyone know if the tag will let you write a note on it? I have people over at my house and they always ask for the wifi password...I figure if I can write a note on it, I can just stick the tag with the password on it and tell them where it is...so I don't have to look for the AT&T password all the time.

you can already do this the easy way. Just because I already have a screen grab of the TecTiles app (but this can be done on the other apps also):

"Join a WiFi Network" lets you write your WiFi name AND wep password. I've done this already and i know it works. Of course, everyone that comes to your house has to have an NFC capable phone. If they don't make a tag with a text file on it so you can remember your pw.
"Show a reminder note" would be what you might use in th tectiles app.
Yes that is exactly what I was looking for...only people that don't have NFC are iPhone users and they aren't allowed to have my Wi-Fi password haha

Hi I am about to rip my hair out. I live Boston and ride the train everyday. I use this time to watch movies. I chose the epic for its beautiful screen and video codecs.
However, I am unable to enjoy my train rides because of this really annoying sound whenever I am roaming...which every three seconds in train tunnels. Its also really embarressing for others to hear it.
I have already disabled Roaming Guard to stop the stupid warning screen but I cant figure out how to stop the sound.
Please help.

Another option is to use roam control before starting your train ride to force it on roam only and will only make that noise once then after ur done w/ train ride can put it back to auto so its not switching around on you...
Sorry I haven't had time to reply. When I use the vibrate suggestion I get skips in my vide music. On the trip home I turn on my Relax playlist that has like soft indie jazz and blues to unwind from my job (pawn shop).
I'm gonna try he roam thing...it is really annoying. I switched from an Evo and I'm starting to regret it. Is there ANYWAY to stop this?? Is there ANY rom that can bypass it, or any app? In the matter of twenty seconds my phone roamed in and out which made get a headache. Sorry to sound like a baby its but its fustrating that you can't remove this..."feature".

If you haven't heard about iris go here;

So, what do you think about it? I think it's unreal that they made in in just 8 hours! Grated, it has a few problems but overall it's extremely well done. One problem that really annoyed me was that it was working fine, then about 4 hours later it would give me complete and utter crap for answers. Now it's working again, if I was to ask "How did Jhon F Kennedy die?" I would receive a full answer provided with pictures, dates, etc. Whereas before I would receive answers such as "He was bitten by a werewolf." or "He sold his soul to Yelloweyes to let Jake live."
Anyway, what's your take on this?

I think all this voice stuff is crap I'm betting it doesn't take off, it's just a gimmick. agreed.
Just a silly gimmick that in reality doesnt actually work that well.
So..it's cleverbot with a speech synthesizer that can apparently do some fact querys?
Isn't the main point of Siri that it interacts with your phone and does stuff there?
I wouldn't call a text-to-speech cleverbot the same as siri or even remotely close..
8 hours doesn't matter in this case - it's simply programming speech-to-text and vice versa from the bot.
Actual interpretation and phone interaction is a completely different and much more difficult thing.

I'm wondering if an NFC tag can be used to unlock the Android device -- instead of using the screen pattern lock.
Or does the device need to be unlocked for NFC to function in the first place?
My device would probably be a Galaxy S III running under ICS, but I am guessing this is a general property.
Sure would be handy, in the car for example.
I've heard about a mod on GS3 to use NFC tags without unlocking your devices but I can't tell you if a NFC tag can unlock it...
Anyway it could be really problematic if you can unlock all phones with NFC Tag...

Aren't NFC tags programmed to be phone-specific, linked to the NFC chip onboard?
BTW, I just found this related thread, which started off asking about screen-off state, but the discussion also covered locked state.
I am thinking this probably can't be done.

No, NFC tags are just passive tags that react to the NFC antenna in devices.

They can enable/disable the lock screen (that's in the next update of NFCTL) but it's "hacky" in a sense. It works but it's not really "disabling" it as much as it's telling keyguard don't show it I'm a trusted app and need to display data.
The screen has to be unlocked for NFC to function. With that said you could modify the source of the NFC service to alter this, rebuild and push this to a device (Assuming no signature issues). It's pretty clear in the source where the restriction is (it checks if it's unlocked before turning on).

we currently have one app's working like a charm can lock and unlock all android NFC mobile, due to some restriction we have to find a turn around but now work. Our app's will be released within a month when all testing and polishing job will be done
its likely
As i know, the NFC Tags delivered with Sony's NXT Series can only be used when the Screen i lit up (Xperia P), maybe there is a developer out there who can implement such a function so you can use NFC without lighting up your Phone...
Check what I did

Isnt S-beam Wi-Fi Direct + android beam something like that mix together but S-beam flaw is that they have ot be right next to each other
Not right next to each other but basically if you have s beam and you open a photo in your gallery , for example, if you tap the phones together it automatically transfers the file. But once they've tapped it has the range as android beam for the duration of the transfer.

S-voice can run
and im sure if its not ported someone will make if its what good but its not to good to sell a phone only on software like some( I ) places
I'm rather sceptical about S Beam on our device;
S Beam uses Near Field Communication (NFC) which is an internal hardware absent from the GS2.
It also combines with the use of Wi-Fi Direct but that's only for use to transfer larger files without needing to continue placing S3s back-to-back when the connection has been established.
Please advice me if I made a mistake somewhere; I'd love to know more.

tags is a stock app for nfc tagging... there are plenty of other apps on the market for better n simpler interfaces for file transfer management...

I am aware that there are other ways to transfer files. Android beam relies solely on NFC where s beam uses NFC for the phones to identify each other and initiate the interaction but actually carries out the transfer via wifi. NFC is very slow and was not intended to move large files and the devices must remain in close contact for the entire transfer. S beam is the fastest and easiest way to move large files from one device to another without pairing or otherwise linking two devices or resting them on top of each other.

Okay Guys,
Just for fun, as a little side-project, I wanted to play with the DashClock extensions API, and being a self-proclaimed "word nerd" I figured a cool "Word of the Day" extension might be fun to put together, so that's what I did .
It allows you to currently display a new word on your locksceen each day, and select from a variety of sources, such as Merriam-Webster, Yahoo, TheFreeDictionary, and others. Clicking the item takes you to the feed source for additional details, or you can elect to select from alternate lookup sources, such as Google and Wikipedia.
For the less intellectually inclined, you can even choose The Urban Dictionary as a daily word source :

Next release I am looking to give the option to auto-rotate the sources on a specified frequency, so that you can see more than one word per day if you wish.
Will give this a try.

Ha, Ha, that's my own personal extension that tells me the status of my garage door at any given time. It interfaces with my personal "OpenSezMe" garage door opener app that communicates with an Arduino for toggling a relay to open / close the door (app has come a long way since that video).
The DashClock extension receives PUSH notifications using GCM (Google Cloud Messaging), that the Arudino sends out when the reed sensor attached to it changes its state (open / closed), so I instantly know at any given time if the garage door is open or closed (or remains open too long), be it via a regular remote, the keypad, or my app on my or my wife's phone, etc
But I digress

I wish it was "portable" enough to do that. That was my goal at the outset, but as time / development went on, I realized there is way too much configuration unique to my envorinment (location, home network topograhy, hardware, etc).

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions, ideas, etc.
Working now on a couple additional features:
Dismiss / clear word & definition on lock screen when clicked (versus persistent), and not display again until new word is received from selected source. Essentially seeing once a day and disappearing once clicked.
When in persistent mode, rotate between all sources on pre-defined basis, so you can see more than one word / day if desired.
This is fun. Urban Dictionary is hilarious. Thanks for this.
This is amazing, thanks
This app is very good! I'll go rate it five in the play store immediately!

Appreciate it. More good stuff to come, especially as it relates to keeping the provided word fresh / different by auto-rotating sources!
