I got my s3 a few months ago but i never really did anything with it. So yesterday i decided to root it and install CM10 but now i'm not use to the menu because i got used to TouchWiz ..
Well yeah that's all unless you want to hear my life story :|
I'm not going to say i'll be active and posting a lot because i most likely won't due to university but I'll probably read a through most of the threads.

Welcome to xda ...its a great resource for android but there are a few things you need to be aware of...if you ask a question in the development forums that's already been asked or answered...be prepared to get reamed by someone...as such learn to use the search function effectively...always read through the op and thread posts thoroughly...also be sure to post in the correct sections.. lastly get to know adb before you mess with your phone...other than that the community is pretty chill...just that at times it can be overwhelming to new comers...as long as you do your research though and follow the rules put forth by the mods and rom devs you should be fine.

Have had this phone for under a week and just wondering which of the custom roms have the latest official updates. There seems to be so many different updates that I cant tell which one is the latest. And I dont mean the jelly bean leaks. Right now Im running FreeGs3 Release 6 and seems to be pretty good. Also any advise in which tw roms you guys think are the best, and which ones get updated more frequently, battery life,, etc.. Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks

UVALH2 is the latest official release. So look for roms based on that.
FreeGS3 is an outstanding rom imo, based on UVALG1 which is one of two out of box builds.
UVALEM is the original.
Everything else are leaks. The latest being UVDLI8. The latest jb leaks have bern somewhat buggy and addicted to the juice. The most developed of these are wildchlds XquiziT xD and djintrigues Frosty jb. Wanam just released an LI8 build as well.
Xquizit is based on LI8 and Sprints recent leak.
Frosty is based on UVDLI6 and 7.
There are a number of other roms obviously but these are the ones i am personally familiar with.
Hope it helps.

Lol looks like you got the s3 around the same time i did. Too bad i can't answer your questions.. i jumped straight to aokp and cm10 lol. I think you can look at any of the ics Roms and they should be on the latest. All the jb are leaks

He asked how often the devs update their ROMs. It's kind of a question that needs to be answered by reading post 1 in each ROMs thread. Unless you want to go copy and paste all of it don't criticize me? What I said had NOTHING to do with docs post.

Thanks! There really are a lot of great people here, some more visible than others, and a lot of them know a lot more than i do and often prove to be more help than me!
Just remember to take some stuff extra lightly, especially in the general and q&a sections. There really are a lot of threads and questions that get repeated over and over. in my opinion its usually not so much the person or the question, but for many people its the giving of the same answers over and over again. it can just get a little tiring. (As much as i enjoy helping everyone, every now and then i just have to take a break from certain areas!)
You will probably find that once youve become used to the people here, that many of the folks you thought were rude or inconsiderate will wind up being extremely helpful and may even save your ass someday! Its just that they may have already answered a similar or same question multiple times.

I wasn't criticizing you. It's just that your post isn't helpful. It's just a smartass remark. The guy even stated that he just came over and wanted specific questions answered. It's not like he went and ask a n00b question like "what's the best Rom". What i was saying is that his question led to an answer that is very beneficial to everyone. You feel me?
This is a community, why are you going to be on a forum if you're just gonna make smart sarcastic remarks to everything? It doesn't hurt to ask question. If you need help them ask. People are willing to answer it. But you seem to be bothered by every little question possible. Are you trying to be the bad guy on this forum or something?
I don't have anything against you, and i can tell you're a smart guy, but if you're not willing to share knowledge and help others, don't bring them down.

You said it doc, it's not unusual to see a lot of the same questions asked over and over, but it happens especially the first few months of new phone releases. We came from the T-Mobile s2 and we were known as the dark corner of xda for a bit lol so we're use to it. But things got sorted out and the s2 section became actually a cool place.
For example, all the root and recovery questions. There are like 4-5 threads here that talks about root. There's bound to be confusion. it'll be nice if someone compiled a thread with all the root methods and troubleshooting

I smell a Bible in the works. Needs to be done sooner, rather than later or those 4-5 threads about the same thing will multiply like a virus.
Thread Closed. Question was Asked and Answered.
Totally new to this phone. Cracked my tbolt last week, got a used 32gig nexus. Ive unlocked, rooted, runnin liquid jb with imo newest kernel. I went with those first because im familiar with both devs. My question, and i love flashing, what are your fav rom/kernel combos for this phone. I found stock jb to be great, but didbt want to pay extra for tethering. I use it, but not often enough for $30 a month. Thanks in advance dudes n dudettes.

*edit* they should really stop letting people create threads from the xda app...

Just a warning to you, threads like this are no longer allowed on xda. My suggestion is do a little reading through the roms your interested in and then do a little bit of trial and error until you find what your looking for.

Uh, i did not ask for "best rom" i asked what peoples favorites are. If you cant read, refrain from commenting. Geez, do people read before they type? Ive been a member a very longtime, never ceases to amaze me how people want to be the first to turn a thread into a flame off. All im trying to do is get ideas. Tbolt has almost no roms compared to here. These threads are active, im trying to keep up. If you dont have a fav combo, dont comment. If it needs to go to qna, thats fine by me.

With the amount of users and different versions of the device we do get overwhelmed with these types of questions.
Everyone will have different opinions about their favorite ROM, but if you wish to discuss the different features each one has please use one of the threads already created for that.
There is a sticky in Verizon's development section that is a good place to start.

CM 10.1 is out guys for d2tmo and datt heres the link

Thanks for the post man. I'm sure there are plenty of people who appreciate the heads up. I've got a couple questions about 4.2 and maybe a couple users can relate or have other questions of their own. Maybe turn this into a CM10.1 User Discussion.
1. Is it just me or do the colors look different? More vibrant?
2. Smoother?
3. Weird call quality? Echoing?
Now I'm not complaining. I do appreciate all of the DEVS for putting this out for us for free. A man's (and woman's) time is worth something.

This is there first nightlies there is many bugs that u gonna face just be patient with the team...the will fix everything with time...call quality seems fare for me and no graphical glitch so far so good...but superuser keep force closing everytime u trynna grant any apps thats require root access all in the first build

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
OK, I do apologize if my previous post has broken any rules. If it needs to be removed than it is up to the MODs. I really enjoyed the ROM and everything else the Cyanogenmod team brings to the table. I did not know that user discussion would be a part of the recently established 10.1 thread.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I didn't mean to sound so harsh, apologies to you guys. Just rather have a thread that'll be maintained and updated with every possible update that will make a substantial update. This one is just gonna clutter and ad confusion more then likely.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
No you're good man. My thought was to turn this thread into a user discussion thread. I've come over from phandroid forums and they had user discussion threads for particular ROMs. That way it doesn't clutter the main ROM thread and people can rely on each other for help and information. And to share their experiences. Leave more room for the DEVs to talk, without the B.S.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I started this one when CM came about it died out and people still CLUTTERED the EFFFFFF outta the CM thread, same posts every 10 posts about their issues that were repeated over and over and over when my thread had the "issue" posted in the OP, I just gave up as it died out about 3 pages back lol. If people want me to keep it going I'll start a new one for 10.1 or continue it but leave some CM10 latest in another post.
Heads up, there's an official CM 10.1 thread now

I know the frustration of seeing someone complain about something know to be issues or someone thinking it's a problem with the rom when no one else has issues. I was that at one point also, when the G1 came out and JesusFreke was making roms, and people had to use ADB to obtain root and be able to flash things. I learned since then and read and read and read. The problem now a days is that most don't care to read a little, or at all. Most of the questions asked in a thread are answered, or been discussed, or don't even belong in the dev section. This is extremely aggravating to the devs, or themers, when they right up a huge OP and no one uses it, and just clutters up their dev thread with useless questions and/or nonconstructive criticism. I don't blame him for quitting or locking the thread, if people feel it's at its prime, then leave it alone and don't touch it anymore. Most of the TouchWiz roms have the best version yet to come, or they came and went a while ago. Most of the mods they incorporated are flashable on your own, anyways. Thank him and respect decisions, or use one of the other 10+ TouchWiz roms.

Jesusfreke was the pioneer of modding for Android. Without him I believe that we would not be as far with android as devs, manufacturers, or even android its self.
Look at thouchwiz its self with the toggles in the notification Window. This came from cm. We the community can end up pushing for devs with true innovation to go back underground where their work is not seen in mass people, Google, or manufacturers. Then android may end up missing what could become greatness all for petty arguments. I follow one such dev in a private forum and it's a shame he was forced to by thing like this.

I let this thread go for awhile (I was logged on when he created it) and you all have said your piece/peace, in an almost professional manner which I for one appreciate very much. But now it is time for this OT thread to be closed. I do invite you to the Official OT thread to continue this discussion, as a few have already been doing.
Thanks you for being civil about it, but the time for this thread has expired.

I would love it if every rom posting would go back to the format of what is working and not...it is hard to keep flashing roms just to see what is working or not...plus I'm sure I'm wearing out my phone flashing 5 roms in a day just to find out they all have the same flaws or not or even if it was fixed..ie does video calling work, or hml, or any other feature that this phone can normally do...remember when devs use to have 2 lists in the op and pictures so you could window shop for your rom and not have to spend the time downloading, wiping and flashing just to restore your nandroid because you don't like the look or the fact some things don't work...it would really help and it only takes a couple of minutes.....thank all of you for your time and development of this device...

Although I agree, your going tone other get zero response or (and more probable) catch flack about being demanding.
While typically, the android community development is free, everyone has became accustomed to the idea that eta's, change logs, working/not working lists are simply below them. Perhaps in their eyes it is. What I would like to remind everyone is this...time isn't limitless, and can be very valuable to some. If you don't like the community feedback (ie. Asking for these lists; small stuff) than maybe you should just (loosely) develop and/or cook ROMs for your own personal use. Xda is a community... A community built on knowledge, user base, and the good ol' boy system.
Just remember what we are here for. We all own a T989 and want to make our devices outlast even the newer models.

The point I'm trying to make is that it would stop cluttering up all the threads with people asking if stuff works all the time when they can just read the op... I see countless people asking if stuff works because they don't know...

You're assuming that people will read and thus not need to ask. As someone who spent over a year developing for the vibrant I couldn't even count the times that I either directed someone's questions to the op that contained the answer or just ignored the questions all together. Now as just an onlooker who casually flashes I read the op and if I don't see the answer I want I watch the thread and let others ask/answer or do my own research like checking out gerrit or just move on and find something else.
When I was building ROMs I would spend hours at the computer and by the time I got around to posting my work I may have forgotten one or two things so change logs were usually only partial.
Getting the latest software on your phone while free does take a little effort on the part of the user.

I'm not asking for a change log just a simple list of what is working and not it's like 6 things and never really changes unless something is fixed...I think you guys are really missing the point...

O and about the free thing I don't ask anyone to do this for us and I certainly don't expect it but if you are going do something for a lot of people than do it right...I do a lot of free things in my life...I'm a dj for 27 years in sfla and I have to spin for free most of the time because nobody wants to pay, but that doesn't mean that I am going to do a subpar job for all my fans just because I'm not going to get paid...I do it because I love it and if someone had a request I don't say well I'm doing this for free so too bad...I hate that argument you guys always use...and I donate where appropriate....

Well the reason this is happening is because 4.2 just came out. People are curious to know what works and what doesn't. Devs haven't had enough time to check all of the glitches and bugs. Devs also rely on us for fixing bugs because they don't always have the time to do it.
As per the same questions being asked over and over, people simply don't know what the search button does.
And yeah

Wow! Someone just makes a basic request and gives thanks to developers, and suddenly everyone is all over him and getting all defensive about developers feelings or something. How did it turn into this??
I kind of agreed with the request as far as how nice it might be to know pros and cons of each rom without reading through pages and pages of useless posts in the dev threads to find out each detail. It seems to me that most developers appreciate it when more people are using their rom (and obviously people appreciate the rom they're using) sooo...it might help people to understand what they're flashing and they might be more likely to flash a rom that they understand from a end-user point of view.
If developers don't want to add a list of what works and what doesn't to the OP, then they don't have to. If developers want to help flashers in their decision-making process (and likely boost the number of people using their rom), then adding such a list might help.
As far as I can tell, that's the end of the story.
So if the Op doesn't state what's working, then people have the right to clutter threads and annoy them, right? Its a win win situation, unless devs like being asked the same question a billion times. It could help keep the clutter to a minimum but its up to the devs. Not that I'm demanding a perfect op, but there are reasons as to why people ask and ask.
1. Too lazy to read.
2. Fast response wanted(see 1)
3. Op doesn't state what's working.
4. Search doesn't always help( at least for me on the xda app.)
5. People want a solution.

OP, your post has been noted and understood. But so that there isn't any bashing/flaming happening, closing the thread, as I removed a couple "not needed" type of posts already in this thread.
Thank You.
