Some are, some aren't. I got mine on launch day, waited at the store till they opened and got the first note, promptly attempted some of the international rooting methods and soft-bricked it. The next day there was a ROM release that fixed the issue and let me try again, now it's been happily rooted and running perfectly since.
Root it if you have something you want to use, ie Titanium Backup, Sixaxis (PS3 Controller on GN2 is cool, FF7 and 8 look great on the phone), etc.
The root methods as of now are safe if you follow directions, triangle away will reset your counter if you restore stock recovery/ROM, so that leaves it to your personal preference.
Enjoy, GN2 is an awesome phone!

Welcome! Its pretty simple to root and I've been on jellybomb since day 1. I also had joshbeach's jellybomb from my S3 as well. So very stable rom and the guy works very hard.

:good: enjoy and see you in that thread lol.

IVe had mine since launch and have not rooted yet, but the ads are driving me nuts. When I got my GS3 I rooted the same day I got it.

Got mine on 11/1. Upgraded from an HTC Hero. After almost a week now, I cannot put it down. Even at work. Couple minor inconveniences from time to time (WIFI/3G) otherwise it's been a blast to use. Rooted stock with TWRP recovery right now, no custom ROM (yet). I've been having too much fun with it as it is!
And may God bless whomever it was who dev'd Odin. Odin>>>> command line Although command line is a good skill to have in your back pocket...

welcome to Note 2 family. I'm still rocking stock rom, for those of you who rooted when OTA comes out do you have to restore your phone?

After a week with the Note 2, still running stock. Came from the E4GT and I was flashing roms at least once a week to keep the phone feeling fresh. Although I never rooted my E4GT the first 4 months I had it (bought it at launch).

Just got the galaxy note 2 today and have to admit that this is by far the best phone ..I upgraded early today and only had to pay 50 bucks for early upgrade plus the cash for the phone and walked out the store with their last white one they had in stock

Finally Got This Phone

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.
Really feels welcome here......
You're sure to get help now, getting all pissy that someone didn't help you at 5:30 on a Sunday morning. Good luck

Wow, congrats to the E4GT community. You just enrolled another winner to the team.
How come no one rolled out the red carpet within the first few hours of this thread?
Glad I moved onto another phone, you guys really suck here
OP, you should get a GN. After my first post there, I was sent a 4 course meal from my favorite restaurant.
xda same as always...
Stoked to be here though.
Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572184
Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.
mobile Odin is your friend guys. as quick as a reboot.

Just got my Galaxy S3

Hows it going guys I just got my Galaxy S3 on Black Friday. I used to come on XDA to download ROMs for my HTC Touch a long time ago. I got out of the custom roms for a while to be safer with my phones and no free time but I decided now that I got my S3 I'd go back to working on my phone a little more and I plan to root my S3 later in the week and probably flashing some ROMs pretty soon. i just wanted to say thanks for all the great resources you guys have spent time putting on this site!
Welcome to the gs3 family. Enjoying your new phone is going to be easy. I android is so sweet compared to the old touch pro phones you may find you only need to root. I I usually end up with with some CM rom but for stock rooted rom is good enough for me for now.

I just got this phone last week and didn't plan on doing anything but rooting it for wifi tether and debloating, but the damn thing kept crashing and freezing every 5 minutes, even before rooting it. It literally didn't run it would just freeze up, so I had to go looking for a different copy of my rom, ended up going with the freegs3 rom due to its ota upgrading and lack of crazy theming and whatnot. Now it's fine. The only thing that really bothers me is the keyboards because I'm a huge fan of the phonepad but the t9 doesn't work. Thanks samsung. It's no htc, but it'll do haha
anyways, good luck

New SGN2 owner.

And I have to say that I'm quite impressed. Coming from a LG G2x, "A major improvement" is a huge understatement.
I rooted it last night, but I'll stick with the stock ROM and give Touch Wiz a try. I've been busy sorting out all the functionality of this beast and probably will be for the next few weeks.

I use Titanium Backup, and a couple of other apps that require root access. That's the only reason for me. I ran the stock ROM on my G2x, and a stockish ROM on my OG Droid.
I got over my "crack-flasher" stage with the Droid, and once they updated the G2x to Gingerbread, stock worked good enough to be useful...

Flashing a rom to get rid of bloatware is a huuuge plus in itself. Certain apps that can only be used with root permissions are extremely helpful to get rid of ads and what not. Backing up and making sure u dont lose data is also an upside. So besides customizing having root access is really helpful

I also came to the Note 2 from a G2x. And yes, it's an upgrade! I notice it the most when I hold my G2x now. The thing feels like a miniature toy.
IMHO, as long as you've rooted, you might as well switch to something like Jedi Master. It's still Touchwiz, but it cuts out some bloat, adds some really nice features, and it's faster.

I've been looking the ROMs over, and Jedi is one of them. I'll probably flash one of the Jedi versions eventually.
I really couldn't stomach the thought of going back to a LG product after all the support issues with the G2x. When I found out the battery couldn't be accessed and I wouldn't be able to add memory the Nexus 4 wasn't even a consideration. Note 2 all the way!

Root?
Hi I recently got my Galaxy Note 2, upgraded from a Sony Ericsson X10a and don't even ask how much faster the note is. But I wanted to know will rooting ruin my warranty, and I am also paying for the T-Mobile insurance, will rooting void them both?
I've never had an android phone that wasn't rooted. I bricked my first G2x manually installing the 2.3.4 update, and they replaced it with no problem. It didn't even make a good brick...
Technically, yes, it voids the warranty, but I've never had an issue with it.
Storage
i got a 16gb sgn2, i've rooted it and put Frosty v2.1 on it, i've noticed the storage for the internal sd is just totalling to 10.97gb only, and my free space is just 8.33gb. what happened to the other 3-5gb? should i return it? i still have 13days to think about it. any help or ideas?
Got my note 2 today handed my s3 to my girl shes as happy as a pig in shi# ' just waiting for her brother to drop his laptop off so I can root this sucker!!! Pleased with my purchase:thumbup:

Hey guys,
I am now a proud owner of the Note 2!! Woo.
Just thought i'd introduce myself to this squad and say hello.
I've been flashing ROMs for nearly 10 years now, and can't wait to get my feet wet on this guy.
I'll be reading through all the stickies and read me first posts in the next day or so, but if you have any suggestions for a new Note 2 owner, i'd certainly be willing to listen.
Thank you all.

I'm using PA 3.1 and I've not had so much fine ricing up the framework in my phone before. It's really handy being able to change dpi considering everything looks so huge normally. It makes you be able to use up more screen real estate. Per-app coloring gives a nice finish that is hard to find on any other ROM.
However, just on the nose, I think the way it displays coverage is a little patchy.

That looks pretty decent. I know i want a relatively vanilla ROM without too much stylizing and theming. I could care less what launcher it has, because i'm just going to use Apex either way.
The features i'm most interested in are: google wallet, photosphere, unlimited mutliwindow, full s pen function, swype, fully customizable lock screen, changeable DPI, unlocked wifi tether, as well as all the other feautures that basically come standard now a days. I'm on the fence about allshare too.
If anyone knows a stable ROM that fits that description, I'll probably hit that up first.

But if I were you, I would down load a few of them. Then if you find one you like. But you saw other things in others you like. I just mix & match a few things. Then I'm a happy camper because I have everything I want in one place!

Sidenote: my last post made upgraded me to "Member". Woo! Only took 7 years.

I am officially ROOTED now.
I think you've talked me into SKY NOTE. i've taken a look at the thread. Looks like i'll start there.
It's nice having a mobile device when it's the flagship. It seems to get a lot more attention on XDA.

LOL
There's also a rooted fully stocked Rom. But it's not going to B as fast as Sean's Rom.
Yeah when I first got here it wasn't nothing in the development section. Maybe like 3 Rom's total. Now look at it filled up now with everything anyone could want!!

Woah GB27

Woah I just recently came back from CM10.1 Wild for the night April 17th build and flashed GB27 stock rooted full restore and I LOVE IT.
No other mods were applied I just used greenify, which is pretty amazing and you can get it here:
HTML:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
I got amazing battery life! Again no mods or battery hacks or tricks. Just pure heavy usage with greenify's help!:laugh::good::good:
Stock or stock based is good stuff

And the best part is that"everything" works!

From my Epic Touch full of Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2.
I was getting more than that on my E4GT without root/greenify. Maybe battery is going bad or still need to settle with a few cycles. But good you're loving it.
Some tips for more battery with your setup.
1. Lower brightness to 10 - 20%
2. Disable unnecessary sync or set to every 2 hrs. Or more.
3. Disable haptic feedback.
4. Backlight set to 30sec or 2min max.
5. If you have games disable in game notifications.
6. Greenify will take care of the rest.
And you will be golden.

Hey guys, Febby here, I come with a life changing story for free, you heard right, for FREE! Ever since me and my wives encounter GB27 not only has our s#& life increased but now we also managed to talked our neighbors into joining us. I can tell you how we managed to do this all by using GB27 for a one time payment of 49.99$ but wait don't worry, if you call mopar within the next 20 mins and use the promo code PantsOff, YOU'LL GET THE SECRET FOR 19.99! that's a 60% (rounded off) percent off original price so don't wait to long to make your life more fun!
Edit: edited because number Nazi can't cut some slack 5 mistyped for 6.
1)$20 out of $50 is actually 60% off not 50
2) go away -_-

Lol febby its due to the fact that some people have a sense of humor deficiency....its kinda like penis envy when a little man sees a big man he feels the need to attack him....and on your edit he may just be one of your fans!

You were right! :good:
I agree with the OP. In my opinion, Samsung did a good job with jelly bean for this phone. However ice cream sandwich IMHO was terrible to the point where the phone was almost unusable.
Some times I think that the E4GT can't handle jelly, bc my phone freezes way more often than it ever did on gingerbread.

I soft bricked over the weekend and sprint tech's said no go have to get a new phone however I new it still had a heart beat and hope. After alot of trial and error, and not knowing what I was doing but I fianlly restored it to life. Went from being rooted to being stock and other than the app tweaks i liked from Xposed settings. Everything seems to run better and smoother it is kind a like tasting an awkward yet intriguing foood you've never eaten. Thinkning about running stock for a few days and seeing if I can handle not being able to get into tablet mode.
Would like to get back to the same tech's that said no go and say an old man never giving up got it to work even though he is not sure how?
Besides I will probably get more done if I'm not always trying to keep up to date with the nightlies.

I wanted to stop reading after your first sentence. But I continued reading anyway.
First of all, they want you to buy a new phone. If you can see the splash screen it can almost always be recovered by flashing a full tar or one click. Don't ever listen to the morons Sprint hires.

Your going to fall in love with your phone all over again.
And your right, your phone should not add to what you already have on your plate, your phone just needs to come on when you need it and be able to use it without having to wipe, reboot, reinstall a modem or reflash anything.
That's what stock or stock/rooted can do for you.
I'm running Kobridge's gb27 st/rooted/deodexed rom and Tdunham's AIO mod. Stock but cool.!!!!

Bloatware and all it seems pretty zippy and I do like everything working like it was intended. I only miss tablet mode for email and Gmail other wise I've been pretty content. I do thnk they did a good job.
I feel like an outcast running stock.
Hello I'm a flash junkie running stock are you going to try and catch me running clean.....
I'm pretty happy with my S2. GB27 is very smooth and the battery life fluctuates, but I normally get a full day out of it. Everything is buttery smooth, even with Nova Launcher. Plus, I'm rooted and can delete all the bloatware.
