[Q] GS3 unrooted-how to reset flash counter - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I am super sorry if this has been covered, but I have indeed searched, several sites, and I haven't found anything on my specific problem. I had my Galaxy S3 rooted for a time then decided to unroot it. The unroot worked and the phone status now says "normal," but I still cannot receive any OTA updates and my flash counter does not say "0." I suppose my first question is would resetting the flash counter solve the problem with getting the updates? And if so, How can I go about doing that with an already unrooted phone? I searched through the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
- but was not allowed to post in it since I'm a noob. Thanks for any help.

Use triangle away to reset the flash counter, however you will need to reroot to run triangle away and then unroot again once your finished.

Could always PM the OP of the thread. Sure he wouldnt mind  That being said, flash the jb version of that rom. Youll be up to date w/ no root and a counter at 0.

Thanks. I'll reroot then follow that thread's guide and use the rom files linked. I know enough about rooting to root, but if I ever run into an issue, I have no idea what I'm doing. We all appreciate your guys' help!

Stupid question, but I want to be sure. I can easily root, then use the triangle away app. But, when I go to unroot, am I just using the JB.zip file from the above mentioned thread and that itself will unroot? Or do I unroot completely first then flash that zip?

Sorry, maybe is offtopic but I need this information badly...
I rooted my GS3 and installed some Incredible HD rom...now, I wanted to get back to stock rom! So, I restored to my Stock rom which I previously backed up in clockwork recovery...Now I have a stock rom but UNABLE to update my phone via KIES or OTA????? It sais > your device curred fw isnt supported ....
What should I do? Should I reset my flash counter or unroot it first before update or what???
THANKSSSS

samsung galaxy s3 sgh-t999v mobilicity shows up as Modified

Hi, I recently got a galaxy s3 (canadian version) 2 weeks ago from Mobilicity and just recently rooted following this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687. Before doing the rooting I was on the JB 4.1.1 update they released recently. Also used this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1 to unlock the phone
I would check daily but today I just noticed my device's status was Modified and I am unable to check for updates. I'm not sure what caused the modified status. I checked in download mode and my count is still 0/No. I also checked Triangle Away and it was the same. My device was normal when I first installed and used the root, I can only remember I just updated a few apps yesterday. I tried flashing with odin the rooted system image and it's the same.
I would like to be able to use the stock rom with root and updates, and set my device to normal status (I'd rather not update through Odin every time there is an update, and I am very satisfied with the stock rom). I've already backed up my data using Titaniumbackup, all my contact info and music (the stuff I only care about). Help appreciated.
EDIT: I also have installed Openrecovery script using goomanager, could that be the issue?

The counter is 0, should I still try to reset it?
Edit: just used TriangleAway, device status still modified, I can access the software update now though, but it gets stuck while checking

You will not be able update via your carrier OAT if you rooted your device. The only thing you can do is to unroot the device, do the update, and re-root the device again. Visit www.galaxys3root.com on how to root and re-root.

If that is all you wanted just flashing the root66 rom from mrRobinson's threat in you original post could have accomplished it.
This would not trip the flash counter if it was still 0, what did it was installing a custom recovery like open recovery.
Follow this steps to get to a 4.1.1 "unmodified" or normal stock system with only root injected to it. You will be able to check and receive OTA updates, but if you ever update your rom OTA you will loose root.
1-download root66 jellybean rom for mobilicity from mrRobinson's thread, there are instructions there how to flash it with desktop Odin. (this will keep everything in your rom and will give you the stock recovery back, so the counter does not trip again)
2-download, install and run triangle away from chainfire's thread this will reset the counter to 0. Search for it.
Now your counter is 0 again, nothing is tripping it, room is rooted but it will still say "modified" and OTA updates may still not work, to fix it you need a clean start. Do a system factory reset, start over fresh and life will be beautiful.

[Q] Sprint Galaxy S3 Stuck in Roaming

I have Samsung SPH-L710 and I had it rooted with Mr.Robinson's method on 4.1.1. I had RoamControl installed and I had it on force roaming. Yesterday it was 4 AM, and I wasn't thinking. I accidentally accepted the OTA update to 4.1.2. So it installed successfully, but of course I lost root access. I was stuck roaming and it wouldn't change. I then used Kies to restore my phone. It flashed 4.1.1 onto it and it still will only roam. I have searched for this issue and cannot find anything that seems to work. Thanks ahead of time. I am worried that I will be stuck roaming for eternity.
Make sure you have RoamControl shut off. Then update PRL / Profile.

I dialed ##72786# and that fixed the roaming issue. But now I have another issue. I'm on 4.1.1 rooted with Mr.Robinson's method and I downloaded Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. I backed up the root and then accepted the 4.1.2 OTA update. But with the root protected it wouldn't reboot after I accept it. It just keeps saying "rebooting..." So I need to find a way to update to 4.1.2 and keep my root. I would really hate to flash to 4.1.2 and root it with Chainfire's method and then have to use triangle away.

why would you hate to do that, it's all pretty straight forward... our you can just flash the stock rooted Rom that's in my Sig to update, but that will also trip the flash counter... it's really not that big a deal to trip that though, if something goes wrong there is a thread by billiard412 that has a stock Rom that you flash that we'll bring you back to 100% stock and will also reset the flash counter... no need to be afraid to trip the counter bud, it can easily be reset

Thanks! So just unroot it with Chainfire's Superuser and than accept the OTA to 4.1.2, then use Chainfire's ODIN root? Best way?
Update: I just unrooted it through SU and tried to accept the OTA after I rebooted it and it still won't work. And sorry for being a noob, but I can't seem to find the stock rooted ROM for 4.1.2 to flash with Odin.

There isn't a rooted stock .tar for Odin, only.zips for recovery... Check my Sig and download the stock routed Rom, flash in recovery and then reset the flash counter with triangle away... although, my flash counter is at like 7, so there's no need to test the flash counter unless you're bringing it into Sprint for repair

Requesting Stock Koodo 4.1.2 update with root injected.

Hey folks. Just heard the 4.1.2 update is out. I am requesting for the stock koodo 4.1.2 with root injected into it. Preferably a flashable zip I can use through recovery. Seeing as I cant update through kies or OTA. Thanks guys. I hope I put this in the right spot and sorry for any duplicate threads in advance. I haven't seen anyone else send out a request yet on this matter.

If it's actually up, it hasn't been uploaded here just yet. That being said, you could backup your stuff and update with http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (go check if the firmware is out for SGH-747m).
It won't be pre-rooted but you can root after flashing it. Also, Odin is usually needed to flash stock.

Stock with root injected is good if you don't want to trigger the flash counter incured by using a custom recovery. If it is a zip you will trigger the flash counter. The stock root injected would need to be done with odin or heimdall.
if you just want root then pulled the firmware from sammobile and then just root it.
Someone is bound to put up a rooted stock zip soon. are you rooted now ?
Yes I am. I originally used Odin to to do so. I found someone on here that had the koodo 4.1.1 with root already added.
Send from my awesome stock rooted I-747M from koodo.
Just to inform you, the flash counter was triggered using root66_KDO_I747MVLDLK4 through odin. It changed from official Samsung to custom and the counter to 1. This allows me to update through kies but not OTA. I want to use OTA so I can keep root. Here is what ive been trying...
Installed Triangle Away and reset the counter to 0 and back to Official Samsung SGH-I747M. I can now go into software update and perform an update. But now instead of saying my phone has been modified, it just does an endless searching for updates. My plan was to use voodoo root keeper but its pointless now if I cant even see that update.
Ohhh well. I can go back to stock and update that way (which I will eventually do) but I absolutely need root as I use my phone for ARliberator, OBD2, and much more.
I will keep searching and hoping I can find a way to update to 4.1.2 to keep root or just be patient and wait for someone to make a stock rooted version I can install through odin or flash recovery.

It's just as easy to flash the update and then root. There are guides all over the stickies for it.
OK, I went ahead and updated with kies, then used CF autoroot with odin and now im upgraded with root. Now I feel like an idiot.... It seems so simple now and easy to do. I just made a bigger deal out of it than it was. Kept all my existing apps and info on the phone too. But made a backup just in case. You may now close this thread. Thanks!

[Q] Stupid question, because I am bone head!

I recently re-flashed my phone because I was unable to get it back to stock un-rooted so I could get the latest 4.4 update. Someone suggested using Triangle Away to reset my flash counter in order to show my phone was 'not modified'. I purchased Triangle Away installed etc, but it had a stern warning that resetting my flash counter could "hard brick" my phone.
I attempted to use the temporary disable of SU for OTA within Triangle Away to unroot my phone and apply the update, unfortunately the update didn't work and now I can not undo put back SU as enabled. My phone is unrooted without the ability to undo that feature in Triangle Away.
Question, is there a way to fix this with Triangle Away? Am I missing something or do I have to reflash my phone again?
Why would an app like Triangle Away have a feature within it's app that could cause this to happen and not a way to back out of it.
I hope someone can help me with this.:crying:

I do have a custom recovery, TWRP. I think I have it running again and rooted, what I did was re-install Busybox and rebooted into recovery, then rebooted back into the System and then it seemed to work fine. Not sure if I will brave Triangle Away again, but thank you for responding and offering a good suggestion.:good:

Did you reset your flash counter? As far as I know this was put in place by the developer to warn people...Of knowing what they are doing before hand. This warning is mainly in place to try and make people read to see if their phone model is supported.
To the best of my knowledge, no one has hard bricked their phone on any of the I747(m) models using this app. This feature does work as I have used it multiple times.
And what update our ROM are you installing? You said 4.4... I used ODIN to restore back to complete stock 4.1.1 (not rooted, stock recovery included) and the OTA update to stock 4.1.2 went without a hitch. I used CF Auto Root (via ODIN) to root and then installed a custom recovery.

I would highly recommend flashing the pure stock 4.1.1 rom (including stock recovery) and then do the OTA. The 4.1.2 stock rom might be available through KIES or through other sites by now, but I can't say for certain. Since you are already using ODIN, then CF auto root will be a breeze for you to root 4.1.2.
No worries. I was a little nervous too about Triangle Away at first but searching did not net anything saying that reseting the flash counter had hard bricked someone's phone. That is what pushed me to use it.

I blew out Kies on my main machine because it doesn't work well, I had to re-set all my USB ports and re-install the Samsung USB drivers so no Kies for me. But where do I find a stock 4.1.1 rom from? My stock version is 4.0.4 (the original ROM when the S3 was released), I wonder if I can just use a custom 4.1.1 ROM instead or do you think it would work if I unroot/stock to 4.0.4 then OTA to 4.1.2?

To ensure best results use ODIN to flash the stock ROM to 4.1.1. You should return the phone stock as if you just purchased from the store new. Then do the OTA. You can use ODIN after that to root with CF Auto root.

Unroot to accept update

Hi,
I have a rooted Sprint GS3, running the stock ROM with just one or two root based apps. Do I need to unroot to accept the OTA update? If so, how do I go about doing that?

if you would like to run a 4.3 stock ROM, there are a couple in the development section that you can choose from without having to run the 4.3 boot loader that contains KNOX. That way you don't have to go through the unroot process to accept the OTA.

Thanks. I think the preference is to accept the OTA. If we need to unroot, we'll do that if we can figure out how. Sorry for being a little vague. I'm trying to help someone else out.
ok, you can go here Restore to unrooted MD4 follow that and you're good to go
I was stock rooted with clockwork recovery.
Took the OTA without unrooting with no problems at all, just had to re-root when it was done.

Really? I thought it was always a bad idea with a custom recovery. Maybe we will try it rooted as well. Thanks.
Every other time I've tried it would download, but just wouldn't flash the OTA.
This time, it did. Surprised me.

Relax . You do not have to update. You do not have to lose Root. Check out THIS thread. It will explain a few things to you in detail about Updates, and how to stop the update nag. If you want to update to the latest TW 4.3 Stock Rooted, check out the thread HERE. Just make sure you read, and read again before doing anything. Also make sure to download the correct Rom. There are several versions on the thread.

Thanks for the answer.
I actually want to update to stock 4.3, and I was trying to achieve that by getting the OTA update.
And i was wondering if i can still do that?
If I simply can't then I'll just go to CM instead of getting other rooms since I used to have them with my old HTC.
Thanks again
If you want completely Stock Rooted 4.3, it's the second link I posted for you. It's the Stock, Rooted, Factory Rom, with Knox removed. All done by CNexus . Just be sure to read before doing anything. As there are several versions posted. I would highly suggest going this route instead of taking the OTA update. Once you take the OTA you will have Knox, and a different bootloader.

edit: now it's stuck on boot loop
edit: I downloaded the original recovery rom and installed it from ordin, then updated phone through kies. it's all good now.
