[Q] DEVS: Port a Port from DHD? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been dead from the phone game a bit... so
forgive the ignorance if that is what this is, but
can http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1539423 now be ported back to the EVO to get working cams and such and also to play with Sense 4.0 while I await an HTC Nexus announcement?

A 3.0 Linux kernel is still needed to further progress on a sense 4 port
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app

Yup currently, only the_plattypus is working on a 3.0 kernel for his sense 4 rom. Im sure we would have one, but the evo is a 2+ year old device and everyone has moved onto the latest and greatest. Sense 4a should be the smoothest sense version on the evo since it only requires 512 ram and a 1 ghz processor, other than sense 1.0. I wish i knew how to build a 3.0 kernel, since i really wanted to use sense 4 and i have this phone till april next year... Im sure the evo 4g section will be pretty dead by then...

thanks for the responses! I guess we'll see what happens.
Still some life in my G1! I'm hoping someone gets it going,
or maybe I'll dig into the os more than I have in the past...

I was also wondering the same question about the Inspire 4g which has a Rom here on XDA that states everything is working including FFC http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849074. It uses the same resolution Cameras as the OG Evo. So does the Huawai Mercury which also gained ICS. There are other phones that use the same rez Camera as the OG Evo that got ICS and have been trying to find the answer if they could be ported over. I can upgrade but in comparison to my OG all other phones are lacking and found nothing worthy of my effort to change phones. Maybe the next drop in Feb will bring one but as to date they fail horribly.

It's not about the res. It's about the drivers and kernel. New drivers need to be written from scratch as well as the 3.0 kernel.

Question/Opinion about the EVO 3D

hey all
i just wanted to get some of your feedback regarding the Evo 3D and the love/lack of love it will get from the development community.
I love the specs on it, but the new 3D technology and display seems like it could be hell AOSP devs to create roms for.
For example, it took nearly 9 months to get 4G fully working on CM (which i love and appreciate b/c it's been my daily driver since my G1). So i feel like the same type of delay would be in effect for all the new technology the 3D will have, such as the dual 5MP cameras.
Anyways, i could be completely off on my analysis of this.
The thing is, i would consider an upgrade to the 3D purely based off the dual core processor and other specs. But, if i can't have a functional, nice CM build for it, i honestly don't think i would go near it.
opinions?

I am certainly no developer but the existence of the Nexus S 4G should help to iron out any 4G issues that are left and make 4G available in any EVO 3D AOSP builds. AFAIK, I believe the biggest reason behind the delay in 4G for the EVO was that they basically had to build it from the ground up since they didn't have any AOSP source to modify for it.
As for the developer support, I was wondering the same. I really want the EVO 3D but I don't want to get stuck in a position like all the Epic users are with little developer and no CM support. I hate waiting but I might wait to see how much love each of the new phones gets before deciding which one to go with.
Chances are that since the Nexus is supposed to be released first and there is already a version available, that will be the phone that many people flock to. I had actually considered PM'ing a couple of my favorite developers (Toast, Flipzmode, Myn) and see what phones they were leaning toward. I think that the ease of rooting might also be a factor. If HTC and/or Samsung end up locking the phones down real tight, that might end up swaying some people one way or another.

Just looked at it, it looks like joeykrim and toastcfh are in which means, at the very least, the thing will probably be rooted before it's released. And if anyone can get the 3D thing figured out, TeamWin can.

New Verizon Phone

Does anyone know of any new/upcoming phones for verizon that have similar specs to the new HTC Sensation?
1.2 gHZ dual core
1080p Video
4.3-inch qHD (540 x960) Display
8 megapixel color camera
Gyro sensor

4G LTE Compatible
Maybe I'm just spoiled with my Incredible, but when I saw this phone I just about started to drool, this phone blows the Thunderbolt out of the water.

The good stuff goes to T-Mobile because they were the first to get their hands dirty with Android phones.
It is quite sad really. I have felt that Verizon has been getting the leftovers when they pass out the awesome phones. Especially in regards to HTC phones as of late. I really don't want to make the jump to Moto if and when they release the Bionic if there is any hope of a great HTC phone to compete.
(I would miss Sense 2.1 / 3.0 too much)
Same here, love the incredible but want some of that 4G LTE and the thunderbolt just doesn't do it for me.
hope we have a (better) flavor of the evo 3d.

[Q] Android 4.0

Any chance of a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich please for the Hero ?
thanks to elelinux for a great rom
should be possible after the release of the source code (maybe next month?).
without the source it looks for me that it won't be possible to boot the emulator image on our hero, because it is compiled for armeabi-v7a (snapdragon cpu) only.
thank you for your post
booooo sounds like time for an upgrade

That's different. SDK is not kernel source. That's why most honeycomb Ports aren't complete. No source was released.

Maybe someone can get it to run. but I don't get my hopes up if I where you. if you look at 2.3 how that runs on the hero comparing to 2.2 and mostly 2.1. And 4.0 even more stuffed then I guess not
touch wood, 2.3.7 is working well for me on my Hero (dont really to upgrade just to get Android 4.0)
But keeping an eye on some HTC Desires on ebay nonetheless

I thinks so too.
I remember when on this forum we were discussing about porting Froyo 2.2. on the Hero...lol...
Its not long since the GB rom's were considered too fat for the hero. Look at us now..... mines has never been so quick.
Sent from HeroDeck using XDA App
I completely agree with Prof Peach. GB was slow on first releases and now it flies so maybe it's hope for 4.0 too when the sources come out and them maybe it will boot on our Hero after the devs cast their magic.
yea, but don't forget the one and only honeycomb rom for gsm hero which JieeHD (I think) created from the sdk...
YES it was from sdk and so it was a miracle it ran at all, but it was SO slow that you couldn't even try the UI features of the rom. No the hardware didn't work at all, no data, wifi, etc, and that is all because it came from the sdk. That wasn't the purpose of the sdk build. It was just to play with the honeycomb UI, but even then the UI should have run alright if it was ever going to run on the hero.
However that rom (which I still have kicking around somewhere) showed me just how honeycomb was clearly made to run on much more powerful hardware than even gingerbread requires.
So I personally will be very surprised if it works well enough for daily use.
But then I'm running a gingerbread rom that is fast enough for daily use and perfectly stable... and I bet against that every happening back in teh day LoL.
I've been wrong before, and I hope you guys can prove me wrong again. I'm always happy to be wrong when I'm being pessimistic!
...
To upgrade or not to upgrade? This is the big question for the android community!!!!
It will run on the hero, but since phones are getting bigger, i think it's gonna be kind of weird to run 4.0... We will have to see it ported firts
As far from what i see and what the google guys reported...every phone that can run GB can run ICS... so that means that there can't be a big problem to run the os, and since the nexus S will receive the update, that means that there is a way to disable the on screen buttons...
For the moment we stick with what we have !!! And we have to THANKS the devs that keep this phone alive. As for the part with upgrading to a new phone, i think we have to wait for the next gen of processors (quad core) or buy phones like nexus S that now are on slim prices
PS: since i got my tablet, i'm not so much into getting a new phone
Stefan
yea, tablets are awesome. Same here - I've used many android tablets and my employer supplies apple devices for my dev work at one company.
Tablets are awesome if you truly embrace them and buy whatever options you need to use them as virtual laptops effectively.
Agree with dkelley...if you have places where you can use them, it's better to have one...i use mine all the time, from movies and finishing with reading stuff.
I have to admin i was thinking on to buy a desire Hd / Nexus S...but not so shure
Stefan
yeah i love my Hero to bits, cost me £50 with Android 1.6 pre installed on it from some guy at work lol.
Whilst i can appreciate its an old handset etc etc, its running gingerbread like a dream, so would love to see the 'consolidated' release of 4.0 on there, i feel google will have dropped a legacy beat if only snapdragon cpus are supported.
admins feel free to move this to the Q&A sub-forum if required

For me the Hero is a phone. and nothing more. It is a little smarter phone then my moms. She can text and call. I can do that and I can also send mail check agenda and navigate some. That is what I use my phone for. If I need more then I will use my laptop anyway. So the Hero with some easy rom is fine for me.
Android 4.0 will bring problems and stuff that I will never use anyway. If you look at most devs on the Hero forum. They are good porters and breakers of things. I am the last one, a breaker XD There are still a half hand full of devs for the Hero.
I think the CDMA will have 4.0 sooner then the Hero. But that is just my oppinion. If they ever get it...
And is there an upgrade for sgs2?

[Q] Time to upgrade........

OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm going to post this question in the HOX, SGN, and SGS3 forums too, to (try to) get a balanced view.
I was already to get the Note, then I picked one up and it's a Samsung. It was like Agent J and the noisy cricket. The One X still pisses me off with it's non removable battery and no external storage slot. The SGS III will be a Samsung. I don't understand why their phones feel so cheap. HTC's plastics aren't that toy-like.
Sprint's Evo LTE gives me hope though. It's nearly a One X with a bigger, though still not removable, battery and it has a micro sd slot. Maybe the next upgrade for the "flagship" will get them also.
Just my thoughts but I guess I would wait to see what else is coming. The SGS III may be better than I think or maybe something else can make me a fool.
I'm liking ICS on it now and it will only get better when the official update comes out.
Sent using the power of the dark side.
Thanks BLG - I know where you are coming from.
Having owned 5 HTC devices on the spin, I feel a little grubby myself considering Samsungs! ;-)
However, here lies part of the problem - I think I'm bored of HTC, and the One X and One S are just so.... safe looking. Where is the design flair? Plus, I've never been much of a ROM flasher (although I did put Vegacomb on my tablet), preferring to have a device that works rather than list the compromises and things which dont quite work properly, so stock Sense is now getting very stale indeed.
Maybe I need to turn to the dark side briefly just to satisfy my curiosity that the grass isnt always greener?
I'm sure I will go wrap my mitts around the SGS III asap. I just want my next device to look, feel and dammit, smell better than what I have. Besides, touchwiz is just
UGLY.

Hmmmm, an interesting alternative, there. Whatever I decide, I'll probably keep the DHD anyway and use it as a test device for flashing/generally mucking about.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

When you say dark side, meaning Apple of course, have you ever considered Windows Phone? I'm much the same as you. Although playing around with the various DHD custon ROMs and having the freedom of Android has been enjoyable; I'm now thinking I just want a phone that works and doesn't need to be mucked around with. Was tossing up Windows Phone, maybe the HTC Titan as an upgrade. Thoughts?

EVO3D ICS Port?

Well I was wondering since the EVO3D's official ics port has finally landed would this be something easier to port and have fully functional compared to all the other CM9/CM10 ICS/JB roms? (Its only 300mb in size) When i say fully functional I mean everything including cameras and wimax.
Also Did anyone notice this article on the main page?http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-8mp-cameras-by-omnivision-use-universal-drivers/
Supposedly taking the ics camera drivers from the Sensation XL (or HD I guess) being it uses the same hardware as the EVO4G could get us a fully functional ics camera/camcorder?
It might be alot harder than what im making it seem, but was wondering if those who are in the "know" could enlighten me.

I doubt it. One prob is the e3d is 5 mp while the EVO is 8. Idk bout other phones but maybe one with 8 will be possible. But I don't think ffc is the same camera, or is it? Idk
Captain_Throwback said:
Frameworks and bins aren't where the problems are - it's the kernel (mostly) and the drivers (libs, EGLs). The EVO 3D (Shooter) and EVO Design (Kingdom) don't help us there because their hardware is vastly different then ours (for the most part). Of course there are similarities, but not enough to help us get this ROM fully functioning.

Well if the EVO Shift got an ICS update, that might actually be helpful. Not as far as FFC goes (since it doesn't have one), but as far as getting a working ICS Sense ROM. But like our ancient, EOL device, the Shift is suffering a similar fate (no official update).
But yeah, as Mazda said, EVO 3D ICS is no help. We've had the leaked ROM like, forever .

The FCC might be the same as well being they used a 1.3mp camera and it has an official ics sense update.
