That is where you download ftf 2.3.3 CDMA. To use with flashtool. In flash mode.
Root: use superoneclick before the ota update. Once you have root. Do the update.

If you have bootloader locked you will need to down grade your firmware to build 42 do this download program called flashtools available on xda.
Download from xda the .42 file use flashtools to load on to phone.
Then root with either zergrush method or from flashtools.
Once rooted use ota to update to latest build 62
if bootloader is unlocked then do as described in previous posts.
All software and tools are available in general or q&a sections.

Well what order is everything done in? For instance, my R800i is 2.3.3. Do I unlock the bootloader (how?) then upgrade the FW to 2.3.4 and then root?
Is that correct?
Try this

[Q] root xperia play

I bought mt play tomorrow nd updated it to 2.3.4 now I want to root it using doomlord toolkit but in one post I read dat it cant be rooted after updating to any gb after nov 2011 so how can I root my phone now?
Check your firmware version and report back. I'll tell you if it can be rooted. If not, I'll give you the solution.

When I brought it it was 2.3.2 nd after update 2.3.4. build no. 4.0.2.A.0.42
Nd baseband vs. 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
What you can do is downgrade back to 2.3.3 and root. Then get voodoo ota rootkeeper. If you then back-up your root and download superuser, you will be able to ota to 2.3.4 (Make sure to check temp unroot box before ota update)
That's how I got to keep root on mine

[Q] has any one else enountered this problem? my play version 2.3.4

I have the Xperia Play r800x with android version 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.E.0.57 and have verizon as a carrier.i recently encountered a problem with my internal memory. it was getting filled up. so i attempted to root it(hoping to gain acess so i could delete some bloatware) with various programs like Superoneclick.I tried SuperOneClick and each time the program would go nonresponsive after reaching step #7. Phone is in USB debug and connected to PC. so im asking my fellow peers of xda any help/advice? because i have no idea what the issue is.
U might have to root a different way because Sony devices are weird like that.

2.3.4 can't be rooted. You need to downgrade to 2.3.3, root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4 . Search any of the numerous threads on here about the Verizon 2.3.4 update and you will find it.

Correct but he said he was stock, and the free way would be to downgrade and then update and upgrade
so to correct myself yes 2.3.4 can be rooted if you pay to unlock your bootloader.

sometimes when superoneclick gets stuck, just reset the usb connection
toggle usb debugging (turn it off then back on) or disconnect the usb cable

Do you have flashtool? If not, download it, install drivers and open it. After that presso "BLU" button, connect the device in flashmode (vol-- and connect phone) , finally follow the instructions to relock bootloader

So why didn't you ask this question in the Relock thread instead of creating a new one? If you did that, you might have read the final page there and see that nowadays the relock ftf is included with Flashtool. It's also the reason why Flashtool is so enormous (119MB isn't a normal size for a tool like that), because it's packed with relocking ftf's and drivers.
So get Flashtool (here: http://www.flashtool.net/download.php). And follow the previous comment, should work out.
Ok...final question... Which cwm should i use for lock bootloader?? .96 stock firmware..
