[Q] root xperia play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought mt play tomorrow nd updated it to 2.3.4 now I want to root it using doomlord toolkit but in one post I read dat it cant be rooted after updating to any gb after nov 2011 so how can I root my phone now?

Check your firmware version and report back. I'll tell you if it can be rooted. If not, I'll give you the solution.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away

When I brought it it was 2.3.2 nd after update 2.3.4. build no. 4.0.2.A.0.42
Nd baseband vs. 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56

What you can do is downgrade back to 2.3.3 and root. Then get voodoo ota rootkeeper. If you then back-up your root and download superuser, you will be able to ota to 2.3.4 (Make sure to check temp unroot box before ota update)
That's how I got to keep root on mine

der isnt any other simple method coz i read somewhere dat .62 firmware cannot be rooted but .42 can still be rooted
thnx bt i rooted my play now thnx again for ur reply though

I was going to let you know zergRush will work, but I guess that isn't necessary now.
Like you said, .42 still works.

If ur firmware ver. Is .42 then u can use doomlord's tool kit (zergRush) its easy (one click root) nd if it is .62 den u will have to unlock ur play's bootloader.

hi
i have rooted the xperia play using super one click,
rom manager knows the phone is rooted
titanium also knows
cwm app from play also knows it rooted
i chose the cwm 5 from there.
not sure if the memory card is partioned, but not sure if that is anything to do with it.
when i want to make nandroid on phone it accepts it but it does nt go to
cwm the phone just restarts and no sign of the the backing up happening.
can you please let me know where i went wrong.
i dont remember anythign like this when i had my htc desire rooted. but yeah if oyu could help me,
very gratefull.

[Q] Root v2.33 with gingerbreak [Answer For All Those Confused]

I just updated my phone from 2.32 to 2.33. I had 2.32 rooted with gingerbreak. I have been doing some research on this forum and read that you cannot root 2.33 with gingerbreak. However, when I google'd it, lots of people claim that they rooted their 2.33 with gingerbreak. Is this possible? If its not possible please post a link that explains how to root without gingerbreak. I don't know anything about unlocking bootloaders or anything like that however I see people saying that they have v 2.33 rooted. How exactly do you do this?
-------------------------
XDA Senior Moderator Chainfire has released a GingerBreak apk file that helps you to get you root access on your phones running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Actually, Android Exploid Crew developed GingerBreak Exploit and this apk is made on this exploit.
As per developer, the apk can work on some Honeycomb and Froyo versions also.
----------------------
*********Updated*********
Well guys I can confirm that gingerbreak 1.20 does not work on android gingerbread 2.33.
http://www.techofweb.com/technology/root-android-gingerbread-gingerbreak.html
Gingerbreaks "loophole" was patched when 2.3.3 was released by SE other phones 2.3.3 that it works on will not have had it patched. If you want 2.3.3 rooted you will have to downgrade to 2.3.2 with flashtool and then root then do the OTA update to keep root on 2.3.3. See here for a guide. You will be flashing the 2.3.2 uk generic but it works fine with no problems on the r800a.
so how do i root 2.33. Ive seen lots of people say they have 2.33 rooted. How did they do it?
We used autoroot. Some used super one click

Read my post again. Follow the guide i posted in the above post to get root with a locked bootloader. Its pointless unlocking your bootloader if all you want to do is root. Working Root on 2.3.3 locked bootloaders! (Works on all Xperia Plays except R800X)
OK I'm going to try now, I just have one question though. Can I unroot the phone?
Yes if you open gingerbreak again (once rooted) it has the option to unroot. Or you could just do a fresh install if needs be.
OK I flashed to the UK Firmware, I have not rooted yet but i noticed when i try to use 3g it asks me what network, then i choose rogers and it says im registered on the network then it keeps saying "could not download settings. Retry?"
Also after I finished flashing it said i should power on the phone and enable unknown sources and usb debugging which i did, then when i plugged it back in it asked me whether i had an Xperia ARC or MINI. I am using a PLAY [r800a] so i clicked cancel. Is that OK?

[Q] can I root + a few questions

Ok. I got my xperia play r800i a few weeks ago. I think it's sim free since I bought it on pay as you go with a T-Mobile sim. I bought it with 2.3.3 but I updated it to 2.3.4 OTA (over the air). My question is that am I still able to root it? I just want to root it to an extent where there are no bloatwares or any hogging apps that aren't needed by me. Can someone tell me the easiest to root the phone for a noob? I've read the thread where it explains what root is but I don't understand why there are many roms/bootloaders and what is a kernal?
Look in Android development forum for xperia play. There is superoneclick and zergrush.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Just use SuperOneClick to root then use Titanium Backup to remove bloat
Oh ok. Thanks. But can someone tell me why there are slot of bootloaders out there and what is a kernel?
And btw, can I update over the air to any future updates if I've rooted?
So if im going to root, then should I use super one click with zergrush or doomlrod? And what's the difference?

bootloaders need to be unlocked toflash new kernels
kernel (Google it)
zergrush and superoneclick are the same basically superoneclick. and. zergrush both use the same exploit for the xperia play.
doomlrod makes customs kernels with overclocking and more

but ive read that you can unroot if you root your phone using the doomlrod v3 exploit...
anyways, so should i root with zergrush?
you can unroot your phone using any method.

When installing 4.0.2.A.0.62 it says can not install

I have the phone rooted and when I try updating to 4.0.2.A.0.62 it just says can't install. Do I have to flash it all over again, which would mean loosing all apps?
Via OTA?
Better leave it as it is.
Update via computer will remove root.
Data remains with both methods.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
happened to me too! You have to flash .42 again, root before u do anything else and right after root update via OTA! ;-)
And if you don't wanna do it again next time, backup your applications right after OTA update, so you can restore it for the next OTA update (if any)
Is it not possible to unroot, and then update to 4.0.2.A.0.62 ?

Rooting the phone doesn't prevent the OTA update, messing with system apps does. (And you usually mess with system apps when rooted)

Ahh of course.. Iv'e deleted a few system apps and messed with other things (crapware)
When you put them back, you can update your firmware. When you do it OTA, you will keep your root.
Furtermore, this update won't remove any data or apps.

What should I use for backup?
Titanium backup will do, and by the way, if you find your current firmware you can try and restore one by one the bloatware you deleted or restoring any mod you have installed, I did this and I was able to update via OTA again.
It doesn't work. I flashed
LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic Global World (EASY ROOT WITH FLASHTOOLS): http://uploaded.to/file/vmfu4czg
Used flashtools to root right away, still says can't update.
Says Could not install

You may consider either retrying (some people reported having to flash twice or thrice before it would work) or using another firmware, or using a different flash software (I did updated OTA after flashing .42 with wotanclient).
I experience this. What I did I reflash with rootable firmware then root with flashtool without removing any app then I directly update OTA. Then I successfully install.

I have similar problem and now I have a rooted .62 NAM firmware.
What I did is the following:
Flash your phone to .42 firmware with flashtools
Update your phone to .62 with PC companion
Re-flash your phone back to .42 with flashtools
Root your phone with flashtools
Update your phone to .62 with OTA
No need for step 2, 3 and 4!
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
Just have a rooted .42 firmware with an locked bootloader ( i seriously doubt that you have a locked boot loader )
Aftet that just update to .62 over the air [OTA]
If this doesn't works then either flash a pre rooted .62 firmware via fastboot or flash a fresh unrooted firmware via flashtool and then root it by recovery method! If you still have a problem then PM me!

Yes I know that normaly steps 2,3,4 are not required but somehow I had to do it for 3 of the Arcs I rooted.

So you never tried doing the stuff without step 2,3 and 4?? It will work for sure....cause there are only two ways (till now)to have a rooted .62 as stated in my previous post!
But you can guide someone with your method if the original two doesnt work!

I havent gone through all the posts of this thread but i think that the guy aint asking how to have a rooted .62 (incase he is then plenty of threads for it and me and my fellow members have also posted about it here)
Hes just having problem in updating via pc companion.....and the only solution i have is relocking the bootloader, i know i keep asking to lock the bootloader but thats the key to it!
If i missed any point here and please feel free to let me know! ;-)

[Q] has any one else enountered this problem? my play version 2.3.4

I have the Xperia Play r800x with android version 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.E.0.57 and have verizon as a carrier.i recently encountered a problem with my internal memory. it was getting filled up. so i attempted to root it(hoping to gain acess so i could delete some bloatware) with various programs like Superoneclick.I tried SuperOneClick and each time the program would go nonresponsive after reaching step #7. Phone is in USB debug and connected to PC. so im asking my fellow peers of xda any help/advice? because i have no idea what the issue is.
U might have to root a different way because Sony devices are weird like that.

2.3.4 can't be rooted. You need to downgrade to 2.3.3, root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4 . Search any of the numerous threads on here about the Verizon 2.3.4 update and you will find it.

Correct but he said he was stock, and the free way would be to downgrade and then update and upgrade
so to correct myself yes 2.3.4 can be rooted if you pay to unlock your bootloader.

sometimes when superoneclick gets stuck, just reset the usb connection
toggle usb debugging (turn it off then back on) or disconnect the usb cable

Flashtool method is available in this forum, just search for it . There will be detailed method with pictures. Search for stock 6.1.a.2.50 ftf, which is also available in this forum.
In ur case, uncheck wipe user data and wipe app log before flashing. U won't lose any data but you'll lose root and cwm. So u must root again using bin4ry method and reinstall cwm after u flash.
Please note that 6.1.a.2.55 doesn't support bin4ry method. So u have to update to 6.1.a.2.50.
Good luck!
